Same…In Wisconsin lots of the small farmers who have vegetables will put a table in front of their homes with the veggies on it and a cashbox on one end…grab a bag of veggies and throw in a couple bucks…Small town in Northeast WI and everyone knows each other…I think a teenager took the cash one time years back and his parents made him go to everyone’s home and personally apologize. He had to work on the farmer’s farm for a couple of weeks doing hard labor…I don’t think other than than that there ever was an issue. Now go down to Milwaukee and that cash box would like 60 seconds.

@@chernobyl169don’t underestimate people. We have a apple grove because apple were kind of a big deal where I’m from in Germany and people would actually drive up there and start stealing apples.
It wasn’t really a problem since we only had the orchard for private purposes and it would always be enough to make apple cider and compote for us but I think these people would also do it to someone who financially relies on his fruit.
Put enough people together and eventually singular assholes will appear and make enough trouble so that everyone needs to look out.

"Honor system, which I don't know if that would work in my country"
Where are you from? If from US, I'd just like to point out there are various, albeit sparse, locations where honor system is still used. For example, when I went camping, the campground provided firewood bundles for $3 each, but there was no sales person there, just a box for you to drop cash in when grabbing a bundle. Many federal campgrounds you can check-in when no one is in attendance by paying for your camp spot via an envelope and dropping it in a box.
Give your country a bit more credit, it's mostly the densely populated crime-ridden areas where an honor system would be a problem. Most traditional, small-town areas would work wonderfully on it.

The honor system works in the united states, just in areas with low crime AKA not major cities. My town has a convenience store/gas station that's owned by a family who are never there.
The only times they're at the store is to open, close, supervise a refuel, and lastly restocking shelves once a week. You go in, and buy whatever you need with no person there. There's only like three total cameras.
I've asked the owners son how much they lose to theft, and he said it was a "negligible loss, because there's nothing of value to steal. Everyone here is pretty nice."
So....as long as you're not in a major city. The honor system works just fine.

the honour system is also used a lot in my country. in switzerland if you go to the countryside, the mountains, the alps and you pass a farmer house, there is a good chance they have a little "farm store" with home made products with produce from the farm. Also there are a lot of flower fields where you can cut off some flowers in exchange for like 2 dollars. Really handy if you go visit someone on the weekend and forgot to buy flowers. And I've never heard of anyone abusing that trust. Also in a lot of cities in switzerland we have these "tiny libraries" on the streets where you can basically put books you don't want anymore and in exchange take books you like out of the cabinet, also community fridges where you can put food you don't need but is also still edible for people to take.

    • @aliyahpulido953
      @aliyahpulido953 4 месяца назад

We have libraries like that in suburban neighborhoods where I live! We call them "Little Free Libraries" and people usually build them somewhere that's sort of on their property but still easily accessible from the public sidewalk, or a bit further from houses and on the sidewalk altogether. People take a book or two that they want and drop off any gently used books they're finished with so others can enjoy them. I once found a book there for one of my classes when i was lucky enough to find it! It's called "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn.

Uhm, that department store sounds exactly like Walmart, etc. in the States. Except maybe for the adult section.

For those who don't know they tend to use coins more than paper... 500 yen is roughly $3.50 right now. She kind of makes it sound like it's 50 cents or something just because of the coin. It's not. Us Americans just think coins means a dollar or less because I'm pretty sure that those high as our coin value goes I'm not sure if they make $2 coins I'm pretty sure $1 is the highest

$3.50 is pretty cheap for what you get

Maybe you missed the point? For 500 yen or $3.50, are you able to get that much quality in your country? Not to mention that there are much cheaper bento from 7-11 in Japan with the same quality of food.

Its crazy how in japan you can get a full meal for under $6 USD, but here in the US, a full meal wont cost you less than $15 USD

As someone from Texas, honor system for sure works in America!
Over in the border towns, folks will leave out little mats and tables with decorational painted wood carvings and sculptures with price tags and a money bin next to it.
Based on how common they are next to the Rio Grande, I'd say it works out pretty well.

As someone who’s visited a Japanese department store that’s come to my country, I can confirm that they blast the theme song but sell literally almost any food item inside
