I switched from tandem’s control IQ to Omnipod 5 and love it! Being tubeless is amazing and the system works very well. The algorithm takes a few pods to learn you and continuously learns. I’ve never been kicked from auto mode so that was interesting to hear about. I can’t see going back to a tubed pump.
I'm 6 pods in. And the omnipod 5 is amazing!! I'm more in range at night. My best day was Feb 4th with 98% in range. And I been 80+ in range. And this is my first pimp. So far I'm really amazed!! Love your videos!!
You look great. Been a t1 30 years diagnosed at 9 so I'm 39 years young which basically makes me 21 in my dreams!
Anyways I'm excited. Have had Tandem and renewal is coming up
I am 31 years T1D and on the Tandem with warranty up in April. I love the direction Tandem is going so IMO I will not change. The omnipod scares me since I know more with issues than not.
Best of luck to you.
@Dawn B 222 thanks same to you. I'm so undecided because we keep our pumps for years before we can change them.. Tandem has been good to me, so we shall see my final choice. Still have a year and researching now. I moved several jobs to get out from United Healthcare, which wouldn't allow Tandem pumps. Years later, I got the Tandem. I fought for it hard to let go.
I'm getting ready to go on an insulin pump and the info you shared was very helpful. Thank you!
AWESOME vid!! Awaiting my introductory kit for OmniPod 5! This answered most of my questions. GREAT OVERVIEW! Clear and concise!! My diabetes educator will be impressed with my knowledge! Thank-you!
I LOVE my Omnipod 5 - I was on the original, and skipped over the dash due to not having the right phone for that one - and the 5 is helping me not crash every morning with low BS. I feel so much better as well, since I'm more on target throughout the day.
I had an Omnipod and really loved the ease of it and that it was tubeless, but the cannula is a 'one size fits all' type. It is integrated into the pod, so if you don't get on with that cannula, then you need to find another pump. Sadly, I found that the cannula in the Omnipod wasn't dispersing the insulin very well in my body. I was moved over to the Medtronic pump with a steel needle infusion. This has really helped control my levels.
I really do miss the ease of the Omnipod and the fact that it's tubeless. It's only to cannula options that caused me to change over to Medtronic.
They should make more options!
@DiabeticDanica I really wish they did! I would have preferred to stay with Omnipod. If only they had a few pod types with different cannula lengths. That was my only reason for changing to Medtronic.
@@lornaross1984 I may have just the opposite problem. I've had the cannula actually touching muscle if I put it on my arm in the wrong place - ouch!
This is really helpful as my pump is out of warranty. I was looking at if changing pumps would be helpful or not. If you ever did a comparison of the 3 options in the US, I would find that very interesting! Thank you for what you do!
agree!! my medtronic is almost done with & i’ve only used medtronic & idk which to use tandem or omnipod!
I´m impressed with the way you handdle Diebetes! Feeling inspired 😘
This is definitely pretty cool, but I still prefer using the Dash with DIY Loop. With 3.0 you can connect directly to your iPhone. Until Omnipod 5 gives me direct connection to my iPhone without having to carry around an additional device, I just don't want to make the switch. But Loop 3.0 is AMAZING.
I'm doing the 30-day trial of the omnipod 5 and I like the tubeless feature but not a fan of the large PDM. I have an iPhone and since it's not compatible with the omnipod, I have to carry around both the iPhone and the PDM which, for me, is a hassle. I've been on the t-slim for many years and will continue to use that pump.
Thank you for making this video. I am working on getting my iPhone 12 hooked to it. Still having troubles.
I love mine and only use it in automated mode. Can’t understand why you’d want to use manual. but I use it with the libre sensor 2 + …The one critism is before using the libre app would notify another family member if going low. Where are now, because insulet and abbot don’t talk that much together, this is removed and is only available in the pdm controller. I hope further down the line they change this to give other people notifications you are going low.
hi danica the omnipod 5 is not up here in canada yet we can get the dash and the eros witch is being finshed at the end of the year for usa users but canadian can still get the eros it been posted on facebook etc about it and i am not sure about the uk etc eros is the oringinal omnipod for those that don't know hope this help everyone
Thank u for telling us about the omi pod 5
Hey Danica, as an older person nearing the big five oh I was hoping maybe you could incorporate some more simplified language specifically around the insluin dosage. You say bolus and I've never heard that until I started watching you and I have to google it often to remind myself of what it is. Maybe saying something like 'when you bolus for meal time' would help to contextualize it. Or similarly for long acting saying 'basal long acting'. I dunno, just a thought.
Thanks so much for this well explained info , I have an omnipod since 2019 and love it I’ve been waiting for the 5 with the Dexcom for a long time, I presume I can continue using my mmol /l rather than the mg/dl .
As a female I like to know does omnipod 5 keep you in range during periods ?
I switched to the 5 from the Eros almost a year ago. I detest it. The algorithm it uses to determine your basal rate stinks, as all it does it take your total insulin use in a day, and divides it by two. That's your basal. But, for those of us who do a lower-carb, therefore lower bolus, diet, the 5 never gives enough basal. I will be switching to the DASH sometime soon. I was looping with the EROS, and my A1C was 5.6, so manual pumps can be used as successfully as the 5. Just putting this here in case some folks are having similar issues with the 5. No one therapy works perfectly for everyone.
Thank you.
Great explanation of the general system. Could you talk about switching systems in general? My warranty it up on my current pump in a couple of months, I am switching pumps, but what happens if it’s not working out? Am I committed for four years?
Also, who is that beautiful bundle of love in the chestnut fur coat we got a glimpse of? Adorable!
My endo told me the omnipod is going through pharmacy benefits a lot these days so the warranty on your current pump would not matter! So may be the same if you end up not liking omnipod and want to switch back.
@@CD22TRL Thanks for the explanation.
Whoooop! New video 🙂
I’m a Diabetic and I also wear a Omnipod ❤
Great vid. Can you use a libre 3? I know the automatic function is not there and they can’t talk to each other.
I'm considering changing from Tandem IQ to Omnipod 5? Mainly due to consistently awakening at night with the default high glucose setting of 200! My question is: Can Omnipod high alarms be set to a custom level that would work for me personally and allow a better night's sleep! Good video! Thx
I love the video
I am 41 years old. I’ve been a diabetic since I was 18 months old so it’s fair to say I am old school in this video. You are using words that I am not familiar with like Bolis and basil what exactly are those??? Being older Are insulin is delivered in units and for the most part I use Levemir as my long acting and NovoLog as my short acting, so could you please write down what Bolis and basil mean exactly it would be greatly appreciate it
.
I wish I had known it wasnt compatable with my IPhone 13 max pro...
Have your patients had any issues with the dawn phenomenon on the omniPod? Does it learn ultimately to handle it? Thanks.
Any information in connection between the pod and dexcom? With my tandem I HAVE to have my dexcom sensor and actual pump on the same side of my body otherwise I lose connection to my dexcom! Is this the same with the omnipod or can you have a pod on the opposite side form the dexcom.
Please someone answers this i have a Dexcom g7 and about to get a breast exam can i wear it ???
Strange to require the dexcom app on the phone if the pod and sensor are in direct communication. Especially since the official dexcom app sucks when it comes to usability.
Guessing the pod does not have the functions to enter sensor codes, calibration, stopping and starting sensors, etc.
@@dwightl5863 BYOD and xDrip has that though. And given how bad to official dexcom app was when I gave up on it I doubt it communicates with the pod. There is a special PDM for the pod anyway.
I use the Dexcom app on my iPhone 13 with no issues.
@@CD22TRL I agree. Are you running IOS 16 on your iPhone? I'm still running 15 because Dexcom hasn't tested it's app on 16.
@@dwightl5863 I’m also running 15 still, but I have tandem tslim and you can bolus from your phone and that app also recommended to not upgrade to iOS 16 yet, so that’s why I’ve been waiting!
Will you be reviewing the Dexcom G7 after it is released?
Yes! Of course!
I have the g6 on my galaxy a12 but it isn't compatible with Omni pod. Right now I am awaiting dexcom and omnipod to work on my A14 5g.
FYI, the Tslim does not include basal when displaying IOB.
It does in Control IQ 😊
@@DiabeticDanica I use Control IQ, and it doesn’t display. This morning, about 3:00 AM, I got up for the bathroom and checked. Usage said I had used about 1 unit basal, but I had 0 IOB displaying. This has been consistent. Might be there’s another setting I’m not aware of that changes that.
It’s only if it’s been increasing or decreasing, then it’ll take that extra into account in IOB.
Does it work on samsung a14
Great info. I will look into finally going the pump route once it works with iPhones. Question when on a pump do you only use regular based insulin or do you still take a secondary long term insulin like lantus?
Tandem is only fast acting insulins like Humalog or Novolog. Additional long term insulin would be a confusion factor for the algorithm's. IMHO
An insulin pump for most people takes the place of both your long acting insulin (like Lantus) and short acting. But depends on the person, you’d need to discuss with your diabetes team!
@@DiabeticDanica Exactly! Your doctor gives the order and the diabetes educator helps you with the settings for the long term insulin delivery on the PDM.
@@DiabeticDanica Thank you for this video, Danica! My child is type1 and uses the POD. Last week I got an email from Omnipod saying the POD he uses is going to be discontinued and this video helped me understand why. Thank you! 😊
I hate algorithms !!!!!!! My son started with the Medtronic 670g. It fought him like crazy and his diabetes was definitely worse wearing that. We were so discouraged that we paid out of pocket to get a Tandem pump since insurance would not allow us another pump for 4 years. If you gave yourself correction insulin the 670 would subtract background insulin. If you took a shot so it didn't know, it would decrease future basal rates because it thinks the shot the pump doesn't know about means the patient is responding to the insulin the pump does know about more strongly so it readjust what it thinks you need for the future. It was way too much the boss. Before it develops information about the patient, it was better. The longer you wear it, the more it takes over. Hated it. That is why we did not go with Control IQ with Tandem. We stuck with basal IQ. My son hates all the alarms . It literally goes off anywhere from 30-50 times a day/night. It tells you and reminds you about everything multiple times. Wish that were possible to turn off.
I had the 670g and had the same horrible experience. I switched to the g5 late last year, and I absolutely love it.
I had so many problem with the Medtronic 670 g so I stopped using the auto mode and guardian sensor. I had used the pump in manual mode. This year my warranty was finally over and just got the tandem slim x2 and I absolutely love it so far and IQ has been amazing. I’m sorry your son had the experience he did☹️
Could not agree with you more. The guardian sensor was a nightmare and I could never focus on work, studies etc throughout the day and never once got a good night’s rest when wearing it. The target for auto mode was way too high, I hate that I couldn’t fix the sugars myself, and the sensors were not at all accurate. In manual mode, the 670g works well for me but I haven’t been on closed loop for years. I have been using the libre 3 cgm for about a year now and I absolutely love the size, its accuracy (best on the market), better pricing, and every 1 minute updates. Just has no closed loop options yet in the U.S. yet 😢. I’m rambling at this point but I’ve had a similar experience as your son and it sucks.
My pods won’t last the full 3 days. 😢
So if I'm using dexcom g6 with a receiver the pump won't work??
You can use it as a pump in manual mode, but not in automated mode.
Iphone app was the selling point, where is it Insulet ? always over selling and under delivering.
Cool
Does the Omnipod 5 replace the Dexcom 6 sensor, or is this an additional sensor?
The Omnipod 5 is an insulin pump. The Dexcom G6 is a Continuous Glucose monitor, and if you use it on your phone you can link it to the Omnipod 5 for automated insulin delivery. You wear 1 pod (insulin) and 1 sensor (blood glucose).
@@DiabeticDanica Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to my inquiry...!
Which insulin pump do you recommend I'm a type 1
I’d recommend you talk it over with your diabetes team! Everyone’s different! 😊
Is anyone else concerned with the fact that its constantly connected to the internet? Has mic and camera access. While you cant disable that or access it.
The tandem does the same thing! My thing is how often do they fail cause you don’t get extra like with tandem you have infusion sets that are supposed to last three days. Mine rarely last three days and I am constantly having to by extra infusion sets. I wonder how much for extra pods? Also it looks kinda big to wear on your body but I guess if you need waterproof it’s a good choice. Just makes me nervous don’t have a lot of extra money
So if my phone is too far to connect to my Dexcom will my omnipod PDM stil be able to get glucose reading? Like does it actually connect directly to the Dexcom or does it connect to the app on the phone?
Pod and the Dexcom transmitter on your body directly communicate! You can be away from your phone and controller and still be in Automated Mode!
Your controller could show a reading but won’t alarm unless you go below 55
@@DiabeticDanica That’s cool! Thanks so much for the info! 😊 I’m currently still with the omnipod dash since the omnipod 5 hasn’t been approved here in Canada yet but I’m really looking forward to it!
No,
In my experience, the Omnipod 5 does not work well with Fiasp.
I use Fiasp and I have no issues

Hi thanks for the info! So if I get a dexcom and omnipod 5 for my 10 year old, does that mean I will have to buy her a phone to use automated delivery?
For the Dexcom, yes
You mentioned the Omni pod 5 controller, maybe you aren’t aware of the email sent out to Omni pod user’s about controller charging cable and connections burning, and there response to use the App. Or only charge when you can monitor it through the whole charge cycle! Well I’m a apple user no App! After 12 hours controller is at about 20%, very disappointed in there customer service, I like your video, just feel people should know this since no one has mentioned this anywhere.
Yes! I did hear about this happening to some people’s controllers! It was my understanding though that if you call Omnipod they will send you a free replacement
Just called customer service, which always has always been very helpful, I may be getting another controller sent to me? She wasn’t exactly sure? I will let you know. Do love the system though.
off subject a bit...but saw you used the Smart Pens...question, does the app actually talk to the pen or viceversa? Say, if 3 units is calculated with pen and I accidentally dial up and inject 6 units...will the app just assume I bolused the recommended 3 units or will it know I bolused, accidentally, the 6 units? THANK YOU
The InPen? Yeah it knows how much you actually gave and reports it.
@@DiabeticDanica THANK YOU!
One downside to Omnipod 5 is that you cannot set the goal lower than 120.
You can set the target at 110 😊
Yeah, let’s do a review on something that I’ve never used before. #Fail.
I’m sticking with my Tandum.
