Hey Jill - just wanted to let you know that your cookbook is one of my favorites! I’ve done so many recipes. Thank you! My biggest problem is to convert what I grow into actual dinners. I am used to going to the grocery stores. But I try to change that....

There was a study done in Missouri agr center yrs ago where they brought all kinds of animals into freezers including circus animals to see how low temprituers effected them - the conclusion was that as long as they had the feed there body's would generate the heat they needed - I know there is the exception - when dogs or animals shiver it's simply there body generating more heat to raise there body tempetuer - when a dog is on a leash they can't move around so they will shiver to warm them selves up - there are exceptions as in South West WY when it gets to -60 with -90 wind chill but that's the exception- I'm familiar with all that

When I met my husband I never had been on a farm before, he brought me out to the farm I to the milk barn to do the evening milking.. when he was bringing me back home he asked me what I thought about it cause he said I was a “natural” and the girls really like me as the ones I did help to milk didn’t kick me lol well I said I really enjoyed it and would do it again if he wanted my help.. so a few days later he took me to the local feed store where they sell coveralls and boots and clothed me up in proper attire for my next visit and said I was a dandy looking heifer all ready 😆 that believe it or not is a compliment 😂.. that was 21 years ago now and I am loving a life I wouldn’t change for ANYTHING! Btw I still own my first pair of coveralls too😉 they seem to get better with age don’t they?! All the best from a fellow lady farmer in a small rural area in the Ottawa valley Canada 🇨🇦♥️ God bless!

and heaven forbid you leave the rug on if it goes above 20°C
all to keep their coat short and shiny for nobody to see. these aren't show horses and rarely ever work horses.

My daughter flew home to Louisiana from Colorado, when she left it was -17. When she got home it dropped down to 19. I’m 1.5 hours north of New Orleans on a dairy farm. We are not equipped for weather like this, but we have made it. Cows are all good like Jill mentioned, if they eat and they are good. Our cows in the pastures get grain fed every morning, those we are not milking. The ones we milk are eating hay and grain and producing a lot of milk. It’s work, but it’s makes me feel amazing.
    Stay warm y’all!!!

It was -17° when I fed this morning and all the animals acted the same as any other day. Even at -40° our animals have always been fine as long as they can get out of the wind and have plenty of ventilation... My horses definitely appreciate the extra ration of hay they get when it's below 0°.

We put heat tape around our outside water hand pump. And, yes, as long as the livestock are fed, they will be just fine. Even our horses prefer being outside. Keeping them well fed is the key. I lived in Powell, Wyoming for 10 years & loved it. The wind can be pretty bitter in the winter, but we managed just fine😉 Love your videos. Brings back lots of memories many many years ago on a 1st calf heifer dairy operation in Northern Nebraska...-75 without the windchill. Milk cows would freeze to death if they wondered away to poop or pee; if they’d been standing with their heads all together. The moisture from their breathe would freeze up their lungs. It was so brutal...Beef cattle are much much more resilient.

I had to bring the hose into the house to thaw out and then had to hook it up where the washer hooks up and run it out the window to get water to my critters. and then two of my three stock tank heaters went out. what a mess. Thanku for the reality of homesteading life...I think it's all glamorous in a natural way! I've unfollowed the lash wearing, hating on overalls, trying to make us think its all squeaky clean phony-ness....im not a homesteader, I live in Ohio...snow blizzards and below zero is not new to me, but I'm inside. Thanku for this

Last night here in Conroe,TX...it was 15 degrees....we normally get a 3 or 4 hour period at the lowest 28...maybe once or twice a winter...We've been this way since Sunday.. Today we were above freezing but we are going back into the teens tonight. I don't mind the cold just don't like what it's doing to the pipes...crossong fingers we drain our lines in time..

We would let our cows into a muskeg once the ground in there froze (takes a lot to freeze muskeg) to help protect them in cold weather in northern Alberta Canada. We had some horrible winters with it getting down to-60 something. Don't know the exact temp since none of our thermometers went that low. The 1 went to -63 but the mercury was lower than that. Cows didn't even want to walk over to eat the hay.

My name is Pete, I keep 10 hens and a rooster. Lately it's been -20F or less. I'm still getting between 7-9 eggs a day. My insulated coop is heated by two heat lamps; one 250 Watt and. One 175 Watt. It seems I me that production is dependant on the availability of fresh water. You see my production doesn't suffer until the water turns to ice, and the birds can no longer get it.

we're se of Elizabeth, only -9 a couple of nights. The hay bale roller off your truck is a wonder isn't it. Our neighbor has one and LOVES it. Sure beats riding on a wagon pitching hay with a fork.

I saw a TikTok of a Texas farmer asking what to do about frozen hay bales. He had no idea how to get the twine off

Hint plug in a small fish tank pump, reasonably cold it won't freeze.

What a fantastic family you and your husband have going! Thank you so much for all your videos! I'm learning a ton! We're buying raw land in Texas because were getting older and these ND winters are kicking our butts, although the winter of 2020 wasn't bad at all! Our goal is to move and to start growing our own food. My only concern is our age... we're only getting older and this looks like a lot of hard work! We both work very body physical jobs and it's truly taking its toll. I pray I'll one day get to live the life I dream about, until then thank you for sharing your life with me! You're truly an inspiration to me and thousands of others! May God Bless you and your Family!
