  • In this video, Instructor Lauren will talk about some really important leadership steps for puppy training with her Jack Russel Terrier puppy named "Shark Bait";). Often people overlook important leadership choices with their small breed puppy simply because their puppy is smaller than other dogs. Making mistakes like this can actually have an impact on your puppy's listening skills. You'll often hear us refer to "relationship" on our RUclips channel. Being a good leader for your puppy is arguably THE MOST IMPORTANT part of establishing and maintaining a good relationship. This video will talk about some of these decisions that Lauren is making, and we'll show you exactly how to include these things in your own small-breed puppy training!

@@McCannDogs I've been watching tons and tons of your videos but I'm encountering the same concern about the house line. My puppy is a 14 week old 3 1/2 lb Biewer/poodle mix and those breeds have trachea issues so using a normal collar I'm VERY apprehensive about (I have to use a ferret harness right now she's still too small for a harness even...she has a 6 inch neck so very delicate) I'm all for using the houseline but is there an alternative or do you have a harness or safe collar for my puppy you could recommend? Thank you guys for all your excellent help!

I am sorry but this video is about any size dog training not specifically small breed dogs. It would be greate to learn from you what is better for small dogs: collar, harness, gentle leader, leash lenght? Leash walking technique for little leash pullers, leash reactive dogs. Should i stay or seat on the floor while training small dog? Couch jumping? My chiweenie had troubles learning "down" command because she is already low to the ground and had no need to follow my hand with a treat luring her to lay on the floor. Crowling under leg technique helped in her case after trying all others. Small dogs and their owners behaviour around big/bigger dogs even friendly ones and children who like to pet? Bring your small dog to the dog park or safer do not? That's just what came to my mind but i'm sure there is a lot more. Anyway thank you for the video!

You make me remember when the first time I got a puppy. And have no experience in training dogs. It's used to a very hard time for me. He didn't listen to me, he's chewing, he's digging all the time, he's bad behavior...
But now everything changed. :D After train with good/right ways, Now He's an obedient and well-behaved dog.

I feel like one of the first things people need to learn when it comes to dogs is that as cute as they are, as much as you love them, you should be careful that you aren’t outright coddling them. I’m watching my gf’s puppy turn into a little monster, and he’s like five months old. I’m about to start working with him myself just cause I don’t want him to be a terror

Jack Russel Terriers are the supreme overlords of the dog world. Could not imagine being without at least one Jack Russel in my life. Best breed ever. Jacks don't know how to be miserable. "Shark Bait" is a hilarious name. Love the content as always guys ! It's so important to get these things right as soon as puppy comes home and save a load of hassle later on. Great points at the end about small dogs. SO MANY people forgot small dogs are still dogs and need the same rules, especially smart little Jacks (who are big dogs in a little package).

Can confirm on the supervise thing lol 🤣
My dog from when I got her (5mths) to about 10-12mths would be on a leash with me and still occasionally will do it (she's now almost 1.5yrs) and it helped alot and when I'm out she's kenneled and it helped so much with training (along with other aspects) because there are 4 other kids, 2 adults, 2 other dogs, and 2 cats and she's a mal x lab it helped her with those distractions:]

I'm planning on getting a little dog by 2025 like a chihuahua, papillon, pomeranian, mini schnauzer, or toy poodle (or mixes of the above) and she will be trained along my service dog (as mentioned in the above comment [she's medical and psychiatric alert and response) and will be in training to be one her self. I've never had a small dog before but I've been working with a frenchie x Boston terrier mix and getting used to it. I have a collar, bowls, leash, and kennel but will obviously be getting alot more lol
She is going to be around my dogs age 1-2 and not really a puppy but I'm super excited! :D

Thanks for the video! I have 6 months old Papillon pup and it has been a hard time since we used to own bigger dogs when I was little. Thanks to having a good kennel I learned quite many things that you could also make a video about. For example, how to discipline (especially pups with an attitude) or even cut their nails is to put them on their back on your lap between legs (have to be careful with their head and neck), they usually calm down then and it's easier to handle it and it doesn't hurt them at all. One thing I discovered is that my pup didn't pull the leash to go forward but stayed back and always checks behind, thanks to this channel I got it better with just regular training. I think it's also an art to get your small breed's dog's attention outside and keeping your back healthy since they are so small. Another thing that is harder for smaller breeds is teething, I did have to have a doctor's appointment to remove some baby teeth because sometimes they are just not coming out and I know there are some tricks to help with it. It would be also cool if you taught some tricks to teach for small pups and how appropriate they are for the age, I know that until some time their bones are developing and they shouldn't get too much exercise or jump down from too high.
Looking forward to your next videos! Thanks again for everything you share!

I adopted my jack russel mix and he’s probably around 5 or 6. He was definitely abused by previous owners, he attacks vacuums, brooms, lawn mowers, any aerosol spray, other dogs (on the tv too, he’s ruined a couple flat screens) and all strangers. I took him on a hike yesterday and somehow slipped out of his harness and bit another hiker. I feel like I am so out of options. He trusts me but he is just so anxious aaaaaaall the time and when he’s overwhelmed I cannot get his attention or anything. It’s really hard to exercise him because he has bitten other people on walks a around our house.

Hi! I had a Jack for 14 years. Adopted him as an older puppy and he had issues too . Bit people , attacked other dogs, etc but he was an awesome loyal buddy .
We took him to basic obedience classes. Also, use the “nothing in life is free” tactic.... anything he gets he has to give a sit or a shake paw or a lie down etc.
Want to go out ? Sit please... come on the couch? Only when you invite him up after a sit command.
      Food? Use for basic commands.
Play fetch in a corner so he is close to you to bring ball back .. do this for awhile to burn some energy before a walk
Use mind games .. jacks are smart!! Look up mental stimulation for dogs on RUclips
Hope this helps. Jacks are great they just need guidance or they get problematic 💜💜

Hi, I have a mixed rat terrie rescued puppy and we live in a city. She just turned 3 months and we are able to get her out. We were potty trainning her in the pads cause we couldn´t get her out. Now we are getting her out every one or two hours but she is keeping it and want to pee at home in the pads. What could we do? If we take away the pads she is going to the area that the pads should be and just pee. She is refusing to do it outside...
