  • Down & dirty 360 degrees practical range test of this simplex repeater, transmitting 5 watts out of a 5 DB gain UHF Collinear mobile antenna. used a handheld and a mobile radio for the test. the repeater was placed on top of an industrial complex roof 30 feet high. Not a prime choice of location, but then again, nothing is, in the real world.

Sir can this be put in a trunk of a vehicle and will it work if I have 10 plus radios in operation..?
Thank you in advance again. By far the most informative videos on this topic.

Thanks for the kind words & watching.
Yes, it could be placed in a vehicle, but you would have to run the antenna outside. Either permanently fixed like a LEO patrol car (unmarked) or using a trunk lip mount or magnetic mount that could be removed, range would probably be 5 miles average radius.
I checked out your website and have an understanding of the nature of your business. From your background knowledge of LE radio, it would work like your dept. radio system but with a delay and repetition of your transmitted message. Once you transmit, it will record it, then re-transmit your traffic. With 10 users with potential security & time sensitive traffic, in the heat of battle, it could make things very confusing and users could potentially step on each other. In my humble opinion, an instantaneous real time repeater is in order for that scenario. This vid is a low budget, low tech, garage tinkering survivalist setup meant for low, (to the point) usage. It would definitly be a "training issue" for it to be coordinated in the field efficiently. I'm just assuming your usage and feel obligated to disclose the shortcomings of this setup will pose to your operation. to me it would be a safety issue with your line of work. Not selling anything , just being real & concerned.

You have good coverage for 30 high building plus elevation of atleast 3-5 feet. Imagine if you have a nice quality repeater as a MTR2000, Quantar, or GR1225. Maybe next time get a better high gain Omni antenna, Heliax feedline and put it 10 ft above the roof top like that ladder.

I ran across this with my field repeater. I have a huge box of old anti-static bags so I just put everything in there and sealed with with EMI tape... works like a charm. BTW, how are those cheap HT's working out for ya? I never did get around to buying a couple... I got my eye on the Quansheng TG-UV2... do you know anything about those?

The signal over head is taken and added at the horizon as per DB gain. Also just for information to your readers, every 3 DB is twice your power. 5 DB is a little less than 4 times your power. So if you have that Radio set at 4 watts your correct on the radiation at the horizon around 15 watts. But the over head radiation suffers to allow the maximum radiation to happen out at the horizon. In most cases this helps but if it is where your working a downtown area it might be better off using a unity gain antenna. That is if there are structures around you or if the repeater is in a valley working mountains around it. A try and see situation really exists. You have to try different antennas to pattern the area of interest your wanting to cover. Or read the manufactures info on each antenna product. The ARRL Antenna book is also a great resource for information.

In the big box store, its called refectix. I have some of that to make pot cozys for camping. Its a tight space in the ammo can to fit. We'll see during the winter & summer months how the equipment fperformed as is. Thanks for watching.

I'm sure you can. Just have to find out the pinouts of the HT's side connector. May have to get a junky spker mic to interface it with.

Have a critter in a box. 1bf-888s, a simplex repeater, and a power bank/ solar cell unit. For juice. I drop it off at a high spot. Then get my work done, and move on.

Using a Port HT Icom T90a with a collapsable High Gain antenna in place of garbage rubber duck antenna...in simplex i have spoken 38 air niles at 150 ft above sea level..transmitting up and over manhattan to long island...
Using instead a collapsable 3 element beam... i have gotten 70+ miles out on same T-90a...
Getting out distances is Easy....Once you understand how..
Using my Roof mounted High Gain base GP-9 antenna on my T-90a i have gotten out at around 90-100 miles but 60-80 is common

Awesome, completely on board for an adventure video to test that bad boy. Given any thought to sticking it high up in a tree? While I think you can be discreet in placing the "ammorad", that solar cell might as well be a signal mirror. At least high up in a tree you can get it out of eye sight. Good luck and looking forward to seeing the end product. Stay safe GG.

Why didn't you use a flexible lead lined, bag as shielding? (Bags used for protecting film, while traveling through x-ray machines. )

Not sure if you've heard of Tekfoil; it has reflective foil on the inside and outside with bubble wrap in between. Will reflect heat away, insulate from cold, and provide water proofing. You can find it at Farmtek's website I think in bulk and I believe they sell something similar in the big box stores. Love your videos!

Glad to hear altitude mentioned, just curious that way as well as ionic cast for that day.
Maybe someone in your local would also take that outing opportunity and work in conjunction to obtain their standing of readiness.
I'm not up to scaling towers at night as when I was a kid, and it being cold really makes it harder to do... just reflecting back, lol.

I'm new to this. And I'm in the process of making a repeater and was wondering how to tune the antenna you have when you did the test on the 30ft building. I'll be building a duplex repeater with a SureCom 328.

What did you use for the shielding wrap? I did a search for "Flex Fit" and couldnt' find anything. I'll assume it's not standard aluminum foil but could be wrong haha.

Sorry for the delay in answering, been burnt out and needed to disappear. Its air duct tape used on those refective ducts on HVAC system. I bet you could find surplus "100 mile tape" on-line. its basically thicker adhsive aluminum tape to patch up aircraft temporarily.
