The Giant Anteater Carries On, 25 Million Years and Counting

- Meet Peter, a giant anteater at the Santa Ana Zoo. Reaching up to 7 feet in length, these guys are the largest of the four anteater species. Without teeth, anteaters use their long tongues to catch and consume their prey. Their tongues can flick up to 150 times a minute, giving them the ability to gobble thousands of insects a day. Sadly, overhunting and habitat loss have left the species vulnerable.

Honestly, it's cute how the anteaters look so weird, they look like they're a combination of too many different other animals all in one
Wilbur would disagree
im off to have a close encounter with one of these
great creatures.
so odd looking but so
beautiful.
They are so weird looking but I find them adorable.
i hate anteaters just check my pf XD
This is one of the most majestic creatures I've ever seen
Wilbur Soot would like to know your location
Then you haven't seen much creatures
@@themalcahtwinz4743 If you ever see one in person, it's crazy beautiful.
Wouldn't really call it majestic tbh
They are an awesome creation..I was able to pet one at the Arizona State Fair a long time ago its hair was Broomlike and his tongue was very long and wove between my fingers ...i've never forgotten this fantastic animal..

Lexia Wanz ight
StoopVital lol I thought so too 😂😂
Came here for that comment 😂
I though he had 3
*25 million years??* Wow that's impressive. I hope they won't get extinct because of hunters and such. That would be a shame...
Yeah but let’s be real chances are they are gonna die out sooner or later
AWLE. ACOD. + Of course it matters. Endangered animals needs to be protected. Same goes for tiger and many animals too.
AWLE. ACOD. Imbecile
AWLE. ACOD they mean that was al long time ago
25 million years is a damn long time. xD By comparison, humanity has been around, or at least our ancestry, for an estimated 6 million. Homo sapiens only really emerged about two million years ago, and our current humans around 200,000 years ago. Civilization as we know and record it has existed about 6,000 years. So the ant eater has made it through a hell of a lot. Can hopefully make it through... well, us.
Also, his forelimbs have markings that make them resemble the head and snout of a spectacled bear (or a panda, if you're so inclined). When they're being attacked by pumas they rear up and it looks just like a bear that is about to attack.
really! its just so incredible
how some species have
evolved to look/ act for
survival. Theres a lil owl
whos feathers on back of head have markings
that make up another face
so predaters think owl can see them
It's the actual Peter the Anteater! UCI! Zot zot zot!
The right leg looks like a panda head

Nature: the king of "if it's not broken don't fix it"
Humans: the king of "break it til it's fixed"
When an animal is so strange that you first have doubts whether it's CGI or not...
I love him.
My dog looks like that ant eater when I give him the rest of my pbj sandwich.

HEY I KNEW I RECOGNIZED YOU, I volunteer work with peter at the santa ana zoo! when did you guys do the shoot with him? while watching i was surprised to think another giant anteater named peter who also eats bug sludge and yogurt....
peter is soooooo cute
hes not
tell me why i’ve literally been laughing at this for the past 10mins😂💀
in my experience, just last 6 months twice my driver run into near collision with them in the night. I was very grateful for drivers reflexes in both instances (one of road and one main road in Colombia's center/south of the country) and it was obvious they truly cared for welfare of anteater not so much car. We had to stop at both times, which give us chance to admire those slow but very majestic animals. I guess this must be part of the conservation challenge too
Legit one of his hands look like a panda
Thanks for sharing
I look at how this animal walks and I can imagine a giant ground sloth walking this way also.
0:01 is it me or does the intro at the beginning of the video rhymes perfectly? 0:04

In Brazil it's called Tamanduá (tamandooah) or Tamanduá Bandeira (flag shaped tamanduá), for this specific giant breed
Brazilian think this animal is shaped like a flag??
What a cute little animal
Anteaters strike unreasonable fear into me.
Adorably cute >.
I love you guys
This is b far the trippiest animal I have ever seen in a while. Like what in the hell it looks like a dog with a MASSIVE long skinny snout. No teeth? Huge tongue. Its just so trippy.
OK great, now can we breed a large number and then release them to take care of all the fire ants in Texas please? Please?!!!!!!
Malaysia is a lot worse
Yeah technically.
My, my, Mr. Mellark. What a fancy costume you have there.
Every animal ever:
Humans: Sooo cuteee!!!!!
I know an expert who spent 15 years in the forests of Argentina to study these animals just to realise he wasted his life. Stay strong Franklin!
I wish he didn’t think it was wasted. It sounds like a worthy thing to do.
@@beverlykrejsa5709A famous and hilarious skit from the Onion.
Awwww they're so cute. Like sloths 🦥

The thumbnail made it look like the front paw was a polar bear

Aquidauana, Mato Grosso do Sul - BRAZIL - South America. "The anteater is sometimes part of the jaguar diet, but in the Pantanal it represents a small part of the menu - less than 5%" - Fernando Rodrigo Tortato, field researcher at the Pantanal Jaguar Project. The weird-looking mammal has a secret weapon - sharp, four-inch claws, which are normally used to open tingles but can also be fatal to a predator
Tounge is so thicc that no ant can sting it.
This animal is huge in person I saw it walking over a road in ondonga Namibia
I like the Anteta
Save the living vacuums!

They'll also tear your legs apart if they T-pose
Why are people hunting these animals ???
I was wondering the same thing...why?
Yasmin Roberts its not like you can brag about it so there really is no good reason to hunt one
Probably some medical stuff or just for bragging
Ask siri
dogs don't treat them very well neither...
Anteater seem........DOPE
Such a bizar animal...If it was extincted, I wouldn't believe they actually existed
Anteaters are reallllyy cutee!
no they are not in any way
Right leg is like panda
I thought that the anteater had two extra heads on each side of its head when I first saw the thumbnail
What’s wrong with me
TheAsianCat well you’re part Asian and part cat, which might be something worth investigating.

I thought that too
Even though im a dog, i like anteaters
im scared of its claws it literally can disembowl u with its claws
but it looks like its mobility is very slow so chances of getting injured by these animals are also very low

Imagine getting succ'd by this. I mean, fascinating! Keep this series up!
Exactly!
Lol
Such a weird yet fascinating animal 😅 I didnt know they had no teeth, so it swallows ants and thermites whole? Thats even more gangsta
