The Giant Anteater Carries On, 25 Million Years and Counting

  • Meet Peter, a giant anteater at the Santa Ana Zoo. Reaching up to 7 feet in length, these guys are the largest of the four anteater species. Without teeth, anteaters use their long tongues to catch and consume their prey. Their tongues can flick up to 150 times a minute, giving them the ability to gobble thousands of insects a day. Sadly, overhunting and habitat loss have left the species vulnerable.

25 million years is a damn long time. xD By comparison, humanity has been around, or at least our ancestry, for an estimated 6 million. Homo sapiens only really emerged about two million years ago, and our current humans around 200,000 years ago. Civilization as we know and record it has existed about 6,000 years. So the ant eater has made it through a hell of a lot. Can hopefully make it through... well, us.

Also, his forelimbs have markings that make them resemble the head and snout of a spectacled bear (or a panda, if you're so inclined). When they're being attacked by pumas they rear up and it looks just like a bear that is about to attack.

      really! its just so incredible
      how some species have
      evolved to look/ act for
      survival. Theres a lil owl
whos feathers on back of head have markings
      that make up another face

in my experience, just last 6 months twice my driver run into near collision with them in the night. I was very grateful for drivers reflexes in both instances (one of road and one main road in Colombia's center/south of the country) and it was obvious they truly cared for welfare of anteater not so much car. We had to stop at both times, which give us chance to admire those slow but very majestic animals. I guess this must be part of the conservation challenge too

Aquidauana, Mato Grosso do Sul - BRAZIL - South America. "The anteater is sometimes part of the jaguar diet, but in the Pantanal it represents a small part of the menu - less than 5%" - Fernando Rodrigo Tortato, field researcher at the Pantanal Jaguar Project. The weird-looking mammal has a secret weapon - sharp, four-inch claws, which are normally used to open tingles but can also be fatal to a predator
