For anyone curious the translation was a bit wrong. Okabe changed his speaking style to "keigo" which is a particular formal way of speaking so at 1:13 kurisu is saying that his "keigo" is a bit weird and that he should be embarrassed being a Japanese person
It’s not incorrect, it’s that the concept of keigo doesn’t translate well into English, so they went with a suitable equivalent that communicates the same dynamic between the characters
That would be a bit of creative license on the part of the translator. Many people wouldn't understand what keigo means or the implications of why messing it up would be embarrassing as a Japanese person. At the risk of an unnecessarily long translator's note, they decided to change the translation to pass along the general idea rather than the specific words.
@X4TERUMI I forgot about this video, but your reply reminded me of its existence! I rewatched it. They're still perfection 6 years after posting my original comment. Thank you for the reminder! This vid brightened my day
***** I know these comments were from a year ago, but interesting fact J. Michael Tatum, the dub voice actor for Hououin Kyouma re-written the entire script himself
+Daryl Sebastian That's pretty awesome, he must have loved this show. I think he did a pretty good job. Oh, and "John Titor" ... I don't think you realise the difference between facts and opinions.
+John Titor Actually, I think they're both pretty amazing. I really like how much effort and, in my opinion, talent went into the English dub, it's pretty awesome (some dubs just suck because they seem cheaply made or the voices seem cast all wrong). But I think whichever one you watch first is the one that impresses you (in both senses of the word). You form pretty deep memories of the experience; it's like listening to an alternate version of your favorite music -- both versions may be awesome but you like the one you knew about first because the second one just isn't the same.
They are so cute with their dynamic chemistry. =) Even over the phone, they banter like an old married couple. I LOL'd when she started correcting him at the end, he blows up, and then reverts to polite talk again.
Okay so, Okabe is talking with his chuunibyou talk at first (casual speech/non-keigo). And then after "The Zom--!!", he speaks with formal language even higher than keigo. But then he snaps back to casual after Kurisu criticizes him. After the "Cel-7!!" He gets afraid of angry Kurisu and switches back to keigo or the higher keigo, I think. Lmao!! Edit: I see people were arguing which is better, dub or sub. I want to defend sub here. I subjectively love sub better, even if sometimes I watch in dub and they are as high quality as dub (I watched Aggretsuko, Beastars, Great Pretender, and some of Mob Psycho 100 in dub, they are great [Reigen and Legosi in dub are wow]). I never see SG in dub, because I don't like how the girls sounded in dub. Because this anime is centered around otaku culture, hearing no moe sound from Mayuri and Faris is really weird. Kurisu also changes vibe in the dub. I can see why people like dub tho. A few minutes ago I just listened to this scene in dub. I heard Michael J Tatum rewrote the script and it was indeed noticeably different, not a direct translation. But it was friendly to foreigner's ears. I can hear playful Kurisu in the scene instead, she sounds smiling in those "Hello?", really teasing Okabe. I like it, but Okabe there was not as KYOUKI NO MADDO SCIENTISTO as Mamo-chan's version. In anime, chuunibyo has this particular way of speaking, like how sub Okabe speaks. It didn't do that for the dub. Dub-only who doesn't find this as funny as the dub is maybe not really understand how otaku culture is in Japan. A culture that can't be translated to English sub. Above I have explained the things that can't be translated lol I may or may not be watching the dub. But when I do, I will purely watch to see how Michael J Tatum translated otaku culture into English in the dub.
The way she answers the phone is adorable like the engrish “hello” is too cute (Spoilers for steins gate 0) Rip the one and only Christina or the zombie or hououin kyouma’s assistant
I doubt Kurisu is actually the equivalent of the English Chris. If it was intended to be like the English name, it'd be written as クリス; simply Kurisu with no meaning. It's written as 紅莉栖, however, which is a proper Japanese name. They just sound the same in Japanese, which is why Okabe uses those nicknames. Well, that's my theory anyway. c:
This is why, when drafting a report for English on Steins;gate, I read it back through and realised I'd referred to Kurisu by at least three different names. -__- I think I switched between Okarin/Okabe and Mayushii/Mayuri a bit too. Seriously, this show has so many in canon nicknames I seriously considered including a key.
But the real kicker is that you did an English Report on a Japanese text *yes* I am here to tell you this 8 years after you posted it, thanks for asking.
