      You probably shouldn’t be watching videos on DYI projects if you don’t have any tools. Borrow your neighbors drill and $5 hacksaw. That’s all you need. 👍🏼.

      @@williamlobur6181 i do apologize for the snide reply and I am really glad you followed up with a response. I typically am pretty good in catching on to sarcasm because i use it daily, but apparently not yesterday. 😆 I am just worn OUT with people and the "how 'bout all those tools" remarks. lol Seriously, why do people watch videos on DIY projects if they don't have tools? Do they also watch Bob Ross videos and complain they don't have paintbrushes?? (no, I can't compare myself with Bob Ross...) Thanks again for the reply and thank you for the support. I hope you recover to 100% from your surgery.

      @@SquareSplinter 1st. Good video, however, It's just that you're billing the project as under $10.00.
      I have all the tools, and then some, so it's not a tool issue, on that, I agree with you. The materials are more than $10.00 thought. Te steel will run about $15- the steel blackner (acid) is about $9.00.
      The best part here is the use of the acid to color the steel and bolts, as painting leads to chiping, plus you're really protecting the steel from rust. It's a nice project at the end of the day.

    I just went to HD and went to buy one for a 5ft door opening and the flat bar of the sturdy kind cost $25 alone. Also pulley wheels cost around $5 each... All together with nuts and bolts you are looking to spend just the same amount maybe $20 cheaper than ordering one off amazon. If you are considering the hardware DIY you probably made the door as well so weight is a huge factor. I'm currently invested in this project and this is the part where I need options for making hardware. I would be doing this concept on a small closet door. Oh yeah and tool haha after you buy all this you need to make it. After watching this video I've tried and couldn't keep it under $10 but I will be taking this concept for a much smaller door. Huge thumbs up!!

    What an excellent video! I learned so many new things here. Looks easy and I've always wanted to do make a barn door but the hardware was too pricey. The quality of your video was professional. Every detail shown. I appreciated seeing the difference between painted and blackened metals, and also how to clean metal before blackening. I'm usually very critical of DIY videos as so many things are missing or could be done better. I could not find one thing to improve. Its perfect. Thank you for a very well made video! Subscribed. By the way, you have beautiful hands!

    It doesn’t have to be all one way or the other regarding tools. Piece together a shop a few things at a time as you build skills, learn how to make things work. People who like to make things don’t just do it to save 50$ on the barn door project. People make things because it’s fun and builds a measure of self reliance into daily life. The financial payoff comes as you get skilled enough to fix your own plumbing, do serious carpentry projects on your place, or whatever. Saving the 100$ per hour for a plumber adds up to real money really quick. Pays for tools really quick. But you need to know what you’re doing and that only comes from investing time and paying attention. Very satisfying as you get on your way. That’s what this is really about imho.

    People need to learn to be creative and improvise. Use an old bedframe angle iron as your rail. Theres probably one in your basement or your neighbors garbage. You dont need to buy each individual piece retail for God sake. Learn to accumulate pieces for your upcoming projects by repurposing. Rome wasnt built in a day, nor did they they buy each brick. Use what you have and what you beg, borrow, or steal. Thats what makes these projects fun! Great job... rock on!

      Juan Jose Ramirez thanks for the positive feedback and yes, you are correct the video was really just to show people they can do things their own way that is much less expensive then buying. Lesson learned to be careful how you title videos. 😉. The tail can be attached multiple ways. I was able to use small bolts and some pieces of PVC pipe cut to short lengths and painted black. You could easily use screws and do the same thing. You could even use small blocks of wood to space the rail out from cabinet. 👍🏼

      Honestly not sure. I would have to ask customer. I am guessing probably so because the piece was “low use” and the doors were only 18x30”.

      Diane Vessels just black spray paint for plastic. We were aware it wouldn’t stay long term where the wheel met the rail but it still looks fine. 👍🏼

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  7 лет назад +1

      H.M.S PF I am not 100% sure on the capacity. They are pulley wheels for tensioning a clothes line so I am betting it’s pretty high. They are holding up perfect with doors that weigh about 15 pounds each.

      Thanks ALOT for the support Larry. Videos are definitely new for me and I am learning a ton with every one. I will say I won’t make another that says anything about what it might cost. 😂. As far as your door lock.... I’m assuming you just have a handle on the door now? How secure are you wanting the lock to be?

      Larry Hall think something like this would be a simple solution. If you wanted I’m sure it would be doable to make one of these.

    • @SquareSplinter

      Orlando Zapata I honestly am not 100% sure. On the bottom though, it doesn’t matter, just personal preference on how you want to mount your doors. The hike for mounting the pulley I just drilled it so the top of the pulley was even with the top of the metal. 👍🏼

      sean coffran first off, thanks for the actual constructive criticism. Tried to list the parts in the video but I might list them in the description. I do use a small harbor freight drill press but you could easily use a regular drill for the holes and a jigsaw with a metal blade to cut the metal to length. Thanks again for watching and the feedback. I’m still new at this whole video thing. 😬

    would like to know where you got all materials need in your video for under $10???? extremely misleading

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  7 лет назад +28

      Hi Jim, couple things in regards to this response from some people as well as similar responses. First of all, as a new channel thank you for watching and giving honest feedback. I am of course new to video content and I am quickly learning some key lessons in online video content. My first mistake in this video was to mistakenly assume that materials are the same cost no matter what part of the world you live in which is of course is not even close to true. Also, my second mistake was of course to assume people would know where to source all of these materials that I used in the video. ------ The hardware I purchase from various farm implement stores in my area such as Orschelins and Tractor Supply because you can buy bolts, washers and similar materials by the pound for very cheap. In my area these all cost between $0.99- $1.99 per pound. The metal used for the brackets and the rail I purchased the steel from a local steel supplier which sells scraps for pennies on the dollar for lengths less than 8'. Again I should not have assumed this was available everywhere. In all I paid about $2 for all the bolts and nuts, $4-5 for the lengths of steel and then the plastic clothes line pulleys were $0.99 ea at Lowes. Sorry for the long response but I felt this should be publicly stated in the comments here so others could see my thinking behind it. I have learned alot in the few months I have been doing this and making videos with dollar amounts listed on them will probably not be in my future videos. I apologize for the video being misleading for you and I hope you continue to view my future videos. Thanks - SquareSplinter.

      unfortunately its at least 100 bucks plus 50 in shipping to get anything up here in Canada, thats why i'm interested in making my own

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  7 лет назад +7

      Joe jay Nobody said you had to use Jax Steel blackener to make bolts black. $0.99 spray paint from the dollar store does that as well. And if every making channel included the cost of all their tools in the material cost that would make for some pretty interesting totals. Lol. My harbor freight drill press and angle grinders are pretty hard to come by. If you don’t have tools don’t watch channels that make stuff.

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  7 лет назад

      jim powell Jim, the biggest expense in these by far is the whatever stock is used for the rail and pulley brackets. Most people use aluminum which is typically much higher than steel. In my are I can by 20’ lengths of strap steel like used in video for very cheap. This is a big money saver over using aluminum. Thanks again.

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  7 лет назад +6

      Joe jay I completely agree that $10 is a stretch for most people in most areas. I live in the Midwest so things tend to be cheaper. As you can easily see my channel is new and the whole video making thing is new to me also. I probably should t have posted any price at all in hindsight. BUT, I would be more than happy to go buy all of these materials again, scan the receipts and email them to you. I’m not a liar, and that is what I paid. Nobody is going to include their shop, tools, CNC machine, paint, paint brushes, screws, and whatever else might be needed for a project. Most people in the Maker community are also not going to make rude comments on videos about making saying to just go “buy the kit”. Not once do I ever say that you can build these kits to make money because that WOULD be a lie. You can however make them very inexpensive if your willing to put in the time and then you are free to use creativity with your projects instead of following the directions of someone else’s. I do still appreciate the feedback even though I do not agree.
