What is most annoying is the fact that most of those scenarios could have been done well. For example, he could have just passed the dinner and smiled to people, eat there and, if he wanted, pay the food by solving problems. He could have helped the woman in a far better way. And at the end, he could just said something like "the world isnt always saved by battling apocaliptic events. Sometimes, all you need is to lend a hand to the people that need it" meaning the woman from before

A potential response Superman could have used to try to keep the woman from jumping after she said she was unhappy with her life:
I know what it's like to feel like life is unfair. There are times when I wish that I didn't need to be Superman, when I wish I could just be a normal person living a normal life, instead of having to save the world as often as I do. I'm always happy to help, but there are times when I wish I wasn't needed, and there are times that it feels unfair, but I have to make the best of it. But there's the thing: Life can be about having to make the best of bad situations at times, finding the silver lining on a dark cloudy day, seeing the smiles on the faces of the people you care about, doing the things you love that make your day better. Life is about the little things that make you happy, because it is the little things that add up to something big that makes life worth living. Now, I need you to think hard: What are the little things that make your day better?

+TPrower I've got it! I understand the meaning behind this comic now! Superman was so grief-stricken by the loss of all that life and that lady slapping him, that he lost his mind and became a hipster. So he was doing it because it was ironic! That's why he was a pretentious jerk who did a lot of stuff, but really achieved nothing and said a lot of stuff that meant nothing but was pretending to be deep but was just random pseudo-philosophy. And that was also why he didn't say he was a hero, because that would be so mainstream!

The attempted suicide and random dickishness aside, I actually quite like the idea of him just casually walking around a city, helping people with odd jobs. It's pretty relatable to how you can do the same thing in real life. The small moments of helping strangers or being helped in turn is a good feeling, and is a lot closer to home for a hero than the grim attitude comics seem to have nowadays.

Superman's speech at the end was very lacklustre, and not at all what I expected. So I decided to rewrite it.
"Aren't superheroes meant to be saving the world?"
"I am saving the world. No I'm not fighting supervillains or rescuing people from a flash flood, but I'm saving people's worlds. A man who'd lose his job if he couldn't get to work on time. A woman going through immense stress and needing an outlet for it. Children who's neighbourhood has become dangerous and scary.
Saving the world doesn't just come from being a superhero. It comes from everyone. From the doctors who make sure you're healthy, to the mechanics who keep your car working, to just your friend, who'll be an ear on a rainy day.
Not everyone is a superhero. But everyone can save a world.
    A single persons world.
    Just one at a time.

Why do comic writers feel the need to have "little events" trigger soul searching in heroes? And why are they always so stupid? The woman who ambushed Tony Stark with the picture of her son, this woman and her husband... You would think massive death tolls and huge tragedies might cause soul searching, but no, it is because some nobody came up and laid a guilt trip on you. It is amazing they get anything done at all if anyone can make them react with a shabby little tear jerker story.

He could've had most of that exchange with the drug dealers to know who is doing this, and found all of their stashes with his x-ray vision. Then, he could've just walked away, gave the police a tip, and, with a warrant(the judge would take his word because he's Superman)and they could've seized the stashes AND arrested the dealers, thus getting rid of the source of the problem. Anybody who's got the legal knowledge to correct me in any way is free to, but that's just my solution.

Depends honestly. DC treats super heroes almost like they are law enforcement officers at times as far as the legal system in their world seems concerned. So it might fall under an illegal search and seizure. But in our world if someone gave out a tip and they had a reason to believe them that can be the basis for a search warrant leading to an arrest. Unless a cop TOLD them to do it, in which case acting as an agent of the police it counts again as an illegal search.

I think the idea is he has no answer, which IS in character. He made her a promise, and if his speech had failed...like it should have...it would have meant denying her her freedom to force his will on her.
I'm sorry @Linkara-AtopTheFourthWall but i think that was the right way to do that. It wasn't an innocent whose life was in danger from outside forces. It was someone choosing death. And to take that choice away, when he gave his word not to, would have been stepping on what he says he stands for. But at the same time it is still a life and letting her die would also be out of character. So he has no answer. It is one of the few good scenes in my opinion. Because it is a genuine situation where his powers don't give him a solution. A moment where the Man, not the Super, is the focus.
That said this comic is badly paced, overly pretentious, and often very very dumb. And All-Star did the whole "save the jumper" thing much MUCH better.

I know you are in pain right now but I can’t watch someone jump to their deaths without doing something and without knowing you have had the mental health support and other attention from people who love you that you deserve. But I just want to talk, not grab you and take you down like the police are expecting me to”
It’s not like she could have done anything and that would have conveyed he cared like a promise could have. It’s not like doctors and police give promises not to anything on suicide cases. Only reason police would is to stop someone from jumping because they can’t do anything if they do, unlike Superman.

TO BE FAIR, the comic never ACTUALLY implied that Superman would’ve let her die. His lack of a response to the officer is evidence that he wouldn’t. The officer should know that he’d never let her kill herself and Superman is aware of this. He wasn’t going to dignify the man’s question with a response.

    • @TheMamaluigi300

Honestly, I was thinking of it as him not being so sure, like how some people interpret Pa Kent’s “maybe” in Man of Steel (you know the scene). Neither scene really portrays it that way (in this comic’s case, the vagueness of his glance is very much up to personal interpretation), but this idea, I believe, would be very possible.
Superman tries to save as many people as he can. He tries to save this woman by trying to convince her to keep going. If he really was so apathetic as to let her jump, chances are, he wouldn’t have even showed up. But the important factor to debate is that, if the woman remains sure she wants to end it all, would saving her anyways just be considered as prolonging her suffering?
Something like that happens in the Incredibles; Someone tries to jump off a building; Mr. Incredible is too late to convince him, so instead, he tries to intercept him midfall, and breaks the guy’s body as a result, ending in a lawsuit. A sticking point in the argument by the man’s lawyer is that he didn’t want to be saved in the first place. Superman probably could’ve saved this woman without any injuries, but the point here is that *she just did not want to be saved.* She probably would’ve hated Superman for not letting her die, especially since he seemed to promise her he wouldn’t stop her if she was sure she’d never have another happy day again.
Something Linkara glosses over is that Superman remarks in the conversation with the suicidal girl that a friend of his had a terminal illness and also chose to take her own life to end her suffering. The idea of letting her make the choice to still jump is likely inspired by that event.
Superman is tries to save as many people as he can. But most of the people he saves *wants* to live. And as for the people who don’t, he tries to spark hope in them to keep them going. If they still can’t, a part of him probably knows that imparting his need for them to live upon them will probably make them even more miserable. And I don’t think Superman would want to make *anyone* more miserable, much less good people.
So yeah. Odds are, Superman would’ve respected her decision to give up, even if it would hurt him greatly to do so.

Literally, I have not closed my eyes in over 72hrs, so bear with me as I seem to ramble a touch at this stage in my never-ending cycle of madness. Here is my point: It doesn't matter what sparked the desire to go to the top of a building, you're a serious danger. I can say from multiple suicide attempts, being a jumper is like a huge pain in the ass. I overdosed and split open a vein, but a ten story drop leaves a significantly lower chance of survival. I take...uhh...33% offense to Linkara saying she's wasting people's time if she just wants attention. Because she deserves attention. People in a state that can be talked down from the ledge want someone, anyone to show them that even though life is about as fair as a rigged boxing match, people can always turn the tide. Sometimes the Last Son of Krypton with shitty advice is even better than what we had in our heads.

You know what would have worked even better? Superman meets with the police and tells them he has an idea. Later, he walks back into the neighbourhood where the drug dealers are and says he's giving them one last chance to clear out and get their lives back on track. When they puff up their chests at him and say Superman can't touch them because there isn't any proof that they've got drugs, Superman reveals his idea: He tells the dealers that he's seen all their stashes with his X-Ray vision and that in his hand is a signal watch like what Jimmy Olsen uses. Once he's found the stashes, he'll activate the watch, which the police are tuned into the frequency of, and they'll come by, find the stashes for themselves, and arrest the dealers. Of course, the dealers will try to kill Superman with knives and guns like a bunch of idiots, which will lead to some classic imagery of bullets bouncing off his chest and a knife breaking in his open hand. Superman would then incapacitate the dealers for attempted assault and a few minutes later, the police would arrive and do exactly what Superman said they would.
This way would have worked much better because it shows not only that Superman genuinely cares about everyone enough to even give a bunch of drug-peddling scumbags a chance to become good, but that he's actually pretty smart and capable of still winning by staying within the constraints of the law.

Recall what prompted Superman's walk across America. A woman calls him out for not helping her with her problems. Ignoring her selfishness, the reason Supes started this walk was because he felt he didn't look out for everyone and needed to reconnect with the people he was protecting. He started this journey because he felt he hadn't done enough to look out for "Over There." And now, he's saying the exact opposite, thus undermining this whole story arc in the first friggin issue. At least with the New Guardians when they undermined their book, the women could still pass on their superior genes to future generations, even if it was through normal people and not the male members of the team. But the "Over There" speech basically tells everyone "Yeah, we're wasting your time."

What he said to Black about “cutting out” a part of his brain that “looked nasty” was a bit of reverse psychology. He wanted Black to think for a minute about how it would actually feel if Superman did let loose and act like he and his team did.

    Some notes:
I wonder why Superman decided he'd do this walk in full Superman outfit rather than as, well, Clark Kent, who is a relative unknown to anyone who isn't a journalist or whatever, and he can connect with people on a more personal level as an apparent equal. Wouldn't be hounded by reporters and shit asking him what he's doing.
And on that note, I understand why he doesn't do a press conference to say he's basically on vacation, considering it would encourage villains to organize for some nefarious projects while he's away and out of the picture.

The “Over There” speech had a good message...buried under TERRIBLE WORDING.
I think what he meant was, we remove them from here. Then they go somewhere else, and they’ll remove them too, and over and over until there’s nowhere else for them to go, and then they’ll stop what they’re doing, because there’s no place for it.
And together, we create a place without their influence.

Makes you wonder what a full Chris Roberson run without forced story ideas of another writer would've been like if he stayed on the title unfortunately Flashpoint happened and Roberson refuses to work for DC (or Marvel) over their mistreatment of creator rights.

In "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?" he performs neurosurgery on Manchester Black's brain using heat vision focused through the lens in his cornea based on using his x-ray vision to find an anomaly in his brain. I assume she's referencing that because he did it and explained what he did during a live TV broadcast hooked in to every screen on the planet.
Also, she's grieving over the loss of her husband. Lashing out at people who could have stopped it but didn't (even if they actually couldn't) is a very natural grief reaction.

I'm glad Lewis was humble enough to later apologize for being unsympathetic to the woman thinking of suicide.
That being said, there is a problem with how JMS wrote her dialogue here imo - this idea that we all "wanted to do great things" and "save the world" when we left school. Most people lose that type of thinking very quickly and I doubt it's the cause of most people feeling disillusioned later in life. I think it comes more from the sense that there's so little meaning in life. In 100 years, all of us will be dead, and there might be a handful of people who still remember us (if we're lucky) and even that will dissappear shortly after. All the trials and hardships we went through won't mean anything, and everything will eventually end without achieving a sense of fulfillment or purpose.
This can be the result of wanting to do great things, but it's not like you have to save the world to be happy.
Honestly, the way she was written here reminds me of that "gamer" Peter Parker in One More Day feeling like he was owed a better future because he couldn't do all the great things he wanted.... leads me to think JMS likely did write that part of the comic unfortunately

After watching this review (and the later reference to this review in Linkara's next screw-ups video) I actually reimagined the jumped scene featuring my own characters. It's amazing how easy it is to portray both the superhero and the jumper in a more relatable light. The jumper simply asks "Are you going to catch me if I fall?" and the hero says "Yes; of course I will," so the jumper says "Well; I'll wait until you go away." The superhero's response is that they talk to the person - a little small talk might help distract them and make them more likely to respond to questions - and then remind them of what they have to live for; their friends and family, their hobbies and passions, and with Superman's speed; once he knows that she has friends willing to help her; he goes and finds them and brings them to her; have them talk her down as they know her better than anyone else. No need to speechify and make her feel worse and then wait well into the night for her to finally get bored. If Superman said what he said in this comic to me; I'd just say "Screw you Superman" and jump, and if he does catch me; I'll just find another building to jump off of when he's not around. Finally; I know Lewis apologised for his apparent "lack of sympathy" in the aforementioned video, so I won't rant about my feelings on that matter, although rewatching this; he wasn't that critical in the first place so I don't think actual hate was needed in the first place, but regardless of one's opinions on Superman and superhero morality concerning life and death, if I were on that rooftop and Superman came to talk to me, I would not want him to catch me, and I'd be pissed if he did.

What if superman, instead of that idiotic "over there" line, simply said something along the lines of "Then I'll run them out of there too." or just said something really corny like "Then you be sure to notify the authorities. Communications and confidence with law enforcement is the backbone of any good, honest, law abiding community. Now, go home, young man. It's a school night." I think just about any cheesy "Superman is a total boy scout and that's a good thing" type option would be better than "Eh that's their problem."

I can think of a better way for Superman to have handled the drug dealers: Before he goes into the drug neighbourhood, he talks with the police and obtains a special phone that he can use to call the police. Cut ahead to the part of the drug dealer scene where Superman says that he's found all their stashes with his x-ray vision. At that point, he says, "You're right, it doesn't. But I can call the police and get them to raid these houses in order to find the stashes, which are admissible in court", pulling out the phone. As the drug dealers pull out guns and knives, we get the always-iconic scene of bullets bouncing off Superman. He also grabs a knife-blade in his free hand and twists it in half. He then activates the phone, the police arrive, the drugs are found, and the dealers are arrested. The child then thanks Superman, Superman says "You're welcome" and he continues his walk.

For instance, Jeph Loeb wrote some of the best DC Comics, such as Batman: The Long Halloween/Dark Victory, Superman: For All Seasons and Hush, but his stuff with Marvel tended to range from divisive to outright *horrible* . Tom King's written some pretty good books such as Mister Miracle, The Vision, Strange Adventures and Rorschach, but also wrote one of the most divisive runs of Batman, alongside the universally reviled Heroes in Crisis. Even Alan Moore's written a few duds in his otherwise iconic writing career (Neonomicon is the first title I can think of that comes to mind). Basically, just because a writer has written some bad stories doesn't automatically make them a bad writer, it just means nobody's perfect.

But rather than indulge in these talents, your personal desire is to serve in a lesser capacity, like a plumber or a secretary. The writer was trying to say that Superman is such a positive character that even without the powers he can see a bright future.
