  • An absolute maiden crash disaster is the best way to describe this. This WAS the E-Flite F-16 Thunderbird.
I got one good landings and two takeoffs. Well I picked up the pieces and took her home. perhaps a post mortem of the dead plane will revel a possible cause for the crash! I was going fast enough, so It should not have been a tipstall?
Needless to say I am very disappointed. However crashes DO and WILL happen. It is part of the hobby you can either get angry and discouraged or you can try to learn from the incident and strive to overcome it. I choose the later.

I agree their “SAFE S3X” crap is garbage, but its the fundamental Rx design that loses links all the time. You cannot run a 5V Rx on a servo bus that dips below 5V every time a servo is actuated or God forbid 3 gear move. It is an unfixable design flaw and I lost count of how many models it trashed before I switched to Hitec Aurora.
Its impossible to brownout a Hitec Rx because they run directly off the main battery Voltage. So no need for BECs that blow apart thin servo wires, either. And every $35 9-channel Rx comes with telemetry built-in for free, so you actually know the battery voltage in real time instead of insanely dangerous flight timers. Even my UMXs have V telemetry.
Spektrum is for absolute beginners. Plus the switches and gimbals are bottom of the barrel plasticky rubbish. Hitec costs about 90% less, too, given no telemetry modules to buy and the Rx are 90% cheaper. Plus the Rxs range check to 10 miles, frequency hop, and scan to avoid congestion. Hitec is extreme pro quality vs Spektrum’s fraudulent utter garbage.

I'm new to the hobby. I've had guys crash at my field due to signal interference. The one thing I know is that I started off with ELRS and I have ZERO issues. I just know that some people will never leave Spektrum. Sorry for your loss.

There are signal loss issue with any system Futaba, Spektrum Radio master what have you.....9 times out of 10 though it is a environmental issue and not the radio system itself . In this area of the field we have lost 6 to 7 planes all being flown on varied systems. The power lines there at certain times (we believe) emit a dead zone that is intermittent and unpredictable. We all now either flt lower the the powerlines in that spot or way higher and the crashes there have stopped.

Well at least we know it wasn't pilot error... In the process of repairing my Timber 1.5 which went in something like yours but at a lower altitude. I thought it had to be signal loss but I reattached the battery as soon as I got to the crash site and the plane rebound. Found that the right aileron servo was gear stripped and guys were saying at the club that because there was no damage at all to the right wing (biggest damage was nose broke off, prop broke and prop adapter got bent) and crashing at maybe 100' away from me that the likely cause was the servo going bad in flight. BTW, 100% aileron was good at pre-flight and working fine until the crash.
Good luck with your repairs. I'm waiting for a prop adapter to come in the mail in order to put my bird back in the air.

Hey Greg, sorry to see this happen! Mine did something similar driving me to do some homework on it. It lost signal twice on me. The first time it came back, but the second time it never did. It went into a wings level power off decent so it was repairable. I found out that the newer models come with a capacitor attached to the receiver. Some people on forums were saying that when you cycle the gear it can put a load on the receiver. In my two scenarios, I wasn't cycling the gear, but I tossed one on there regardless. Since then, I've flown countless times without a single issue. Hopefully this helps if you get her back in the air or end up buying another one.

If, in fact, the aircraft banked right at the exact moment you gave left aileron input, that would suggest to me that you did not lose signal. Did you have any odd mixes programmed? I'm wondering if that departure was caused be some adverse coupling. The comment about the landing gear loading the Rx is interesting, but I'd expect that would only happen during transition and it didn't sound like you lowered the gear as you executed the turn. Hope you figure out what caused it. Thanks for sharing! Those jets are gorgeous when they're flying.

I've watched the crash sequence several times. I can't really tell what happened. I did notice that when you passed over that same spot just a moment's earlier (the last time around before the crash) the wing seemed to dip the same way and went slightly nose down the same way just as you were about to turn to base leg, but you pulled it back up and continued. The next time you didn't soon enough and like the rest of us... panic reacted the wrong way. I've lost more planes in that similar phase of flight.
At that time of day it's extremely difficult to keep a jets left/right bank orientation correct in your mind when it's that far down field. I've lost many planes due to that. That's why if I fly at sunset or just after... I keep it in safe while at the far ends of the field and only take it out of safe when closer to the runway. In full daylight it's not as much of a problem. It's either that silhouette effect or plane to far out there effect too late in the day.
But you did seem to try to roll it out, back upright. I saw the roll rate suddenly increase. So it didn't look like a total loss of signal.
Like another poster said..... there is just a particular angle and location in a particular place in the pattern that I for some reason struggle with my hand/ eye/ brain coordination. I just have to get through that one spot on the field. That may be your spot.

I have since learned more about my flying field. One of the senior instructors at the club caught me the other day and said that area on the field is called the Bermuda Triangle and the only way any one has been able to fly safely through there is up much higher than the power lines and a little closer in. He said that particular section been know to cause signal loss in all kinds of different rx systems over the years and its hit and miss. The only way to avoid it is flying much closer in that section or MUCH higher when over it. This just means when I am lining up for a westward landing approach I am going to make it tighter and more shallow. Other wise It would ba much higher steeper turing approach and slowing a aircraft down with no flaps will be much more difficult.

    • @FatGuyFliesRC

People are often bias against spektrum since it now dominates the industry and Futaba has had to take a back seat. Futaba was the standard for so long. i have used spektrum for the past 10 years and love them from my DXE to the DX6 to the DX9 and now my NX10. I do have to agree though My DX9 did better with range than the NX10 as far as range tests go. However I am not sure this was a range problem.

no I still had 49% left on the battery. I have since learned that there is intermittent radio signal loss when flying to close to the power lines in that particular stretch on the field. That is the second UNEXPLAINED crash I have had in that exact same section of field. The signal loss theory in that area has affected many at the club in that same spot . I have been told to avoid it fly a little higher in that section to avoid the area of signal disruption.

My bet is the power lines interfering with your reception. You said that was the second time in the same spot so powerlines is what I really think is causing it. Try a different radio brand like Futaba or JR just get rid of the stock Spektrum garbage. That brand is fine for land vehicles but for airplanes and helicopters I will only use Futaba or JR. Do your range test with the aircraft near the crash site and have someone there holding it up and yelling out the control surface movement and throttle response so you know for sure. Get your antenna as far from the ESC as possible.

I think you might have to bite the bullet and purchase a new fuselage. The wings, elevators, rudder, ventral fins, wingtip missiles, and the canopy appear on video to be immaculate after the mishap. You can for sure glue the nose back together. But that fuselage looks like it’s toast. I doubt it would fly correctly. Sometimes the fuselage gets screwed up beyond repair. I lost one of my night radians to a power loss (different than a signal loss) and it nosed in from 150 ft. The fuselage bent so much that I can’t glue it together again. There’s like a 0.75 inch gap between the parts, and if I did put a spacer in there, the thrust angle would be off, so that fuse is done. Your intake looks just as bad, unfortunately. I have no idea why it performed an opposite roll command and pitched down. Was SAFE on? Sometimes, SAFE can make planes fly wonky. My friend Dave (from the Dave-It-Yourself channel) had SAFE make his Viper Jet 70mm constantly roll right, even with full left roll input, causing 2 crashes.
