    Printer worked for a little and stopped with flashing " ! " on interface panel.
    IT took me a while to figure this one out.
    HP FORCES YOU TO ACTIVATE THIS PRINTER!
    Unless you activate it printer will not print.
    Activation software is SLOOOOOOW and very buggy. Horribly implemented activation.
    Seems like HP wants to sell you ink directly and this is the only way you can buy ink.
    STAY AWAY FROM THIS JUNK!

    Same thing happened here.
    The guys in my IT department spent three hours on it this week, and even they couldn’t get it to sync and register, to move passed the flashing exclamation point.
    It shouldn’t take you to find someone with NASA credentials to successfully hook up a printer !!
    STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRINTER !

    Exact same problem in my case. I wasted hours to find out what's going on. Windwos Software didn't work and complained about missing Javascript. Smart phone app didn't find any printer. Helpdesk phone number to get help from support was dead. This printer is absolutely unreasonable for non-computer scientists. A shame to sell something like that.

    I'm glad I found this video. It made my decision about a new printer easier. I've always liked HP - we don't have any other notebooks like elitebook or probook in our household anymore, but this way of HP is bad.

    Same here, this is crazy, all good until yesterday now probably some counter expiring and cannot print due to unfinished account setup.
    The craziness is that I cannot ever complete the account setup for an error and need to get to assistance now (during wordays)

    Same issue. HPSmart is useless. Fatal flaw in the setup process. After 25 minutes waiting to speak with HP support, I hung up, brought it back to the store, exchanged it for a Brother HL-L2350DW. From the moment I sliced open the box to my first print took less than 10 minutes. I wasted hours over the weekend trying to get the HP printer going and only got a few pages out of it. Seriously, the Brother printer may not be the sexiest printer, but I'll take function over form any day of the week when it comes to my printer!

    Same thing happened to me. I printed a few pages and scanned some others and then the printer stopped and the flashing "attention" symbol started to flash and I couldn't print anymore! After a few hours of trying to set it up with no luck, I tried HP on line and I was taken to a page for to setup of an account, filled all information about the printer, Serial #, PIN #, Model#, my name and last name, create a password and then before finalizing I had to check mark some boxes that I had to agree that this printer was to be used on line, and that I was going to use genuine HP cartriges, and more! I exited that screen and decided to return the printer, but before I did I called HP customer service and she had a technician (Indian?) call me and after getting control of my PC, with my permission, he told me that I needed an expert to undo the blocking of the printer and my computer and that he could connect me with one and it would cost me $199.00!!! WHAT A SCAM!!! I bought an used HP LaserJet M28w like the one I had before and no problems at all.

    What all-in-one scanner/printer would you recommend for someone who doesn't need fax, but wants a paper tray so that they don't have to feed them from the back/top. But I also won't be using it much, since I only make copies/print pages once every 4-6 months? Note that I have to do at least 4-6 pages those times. I've been told to use laser printer like the one featured here.

    I solved this problem. Through the HP Smart app I completed the printer configuration with a printer registration error, the printer was displayed in the app. Then I went to advanced settings (where the cartridge is inserted there is a login and password), then I clicked reset to factory settings, and did the printer configuration again and this time I got it all right. I hope this will help someone.

      It helped me too. I reinstalled the HP Smart app and also deleted and reinstalled the printer from the computer. Somehow after I did the registration proccess again, it worked, and the flashing alert disappeared.

    Lol, I had a Cannon Pixma once, during the routine print head test n clean prior to printing, it decided to empty the entire large black ink cartridge internally, there was a pop a waft of smoke and the little display said "do not operate, contact manufacturer". Well it went in the bin. I've got a cheap HP BW laser now, it's 15 years old works perfectly and only cost £10, the toner lasts forever.

      Mechanically the HP printer is super, the software is unfriendly. The HP does not know what does it mean Plug&Play...in case of USB connection.

    Hi there, if you’re interested I’m looking into opening a class action lawsuit agains HP. I tied to get a full refund for my printer which is still within warranty but they refuse to refund me for the TOTAL amount I paid. There’s already several Class Action Lawsuits agains HP … im sure it won’t be hard to open an other one.

    The same shit here. It printed 3,5 times. It stopped in the middle of the 4th. There is no explanation for this exclamation mark anywere in the manuals. The rest of the story is the same, but it wouldn't even complete the settup via "finish setup" button. I tried everything. In the end I called the support. They connected it after 45 minutes of trying everything. It was their last attempt. The guy litteraly said "I am trying one last time and then I can't do anything else". Well... It worked. Then I was affraid to turn it off because I didn't know if the next time it would work. Thankfully, the next time it connected just fine. I am waiting to see if it will die again. But if it does, I will throw it out of the window and buy a real printer. I'm not gonna try to fix it again.

    I don't have solution but I do have this printer. It took me awhile to connect. Just kept trying and finally got it to work. Today, I had to figure out how to remove and install the damn toner chip from factory cartridge to replacement. If you don't have lots of time, follow these comments and stay away. I finally got that toner issue fixed, and have to live with "low toner" warnings until I buy a factory HP replacement toner.... crazy stuff. 3 cartridges and I could buy a new printer....

      Printer means definitely: something that prints. But it does not. Instead works as a puzzle.
      To tell the truth this printer(sw) is not so smart, clever. You can not use the copy function without the PC... A dedicated copy machine is much more smart: it can be used individually, BUT can be used also as a printer or scanner connected to a PC. So there is room for development for such small PC peripherals like this MFP m140we...

    That thing is broken. I think the account requirement refers to the mobile app. I don't think it's gonna work even if you did that.

    Re my comment below : As per expert I am told Do not by any HP printers. Cannon is the best And if your wifi is not close to your laptop or computer do not use wifi . It is best to plug in w power cord

    Hello , i had the same problem , nothing was working , then i had a longer phone with HP Service station , no it works !
    But i think a company with a good name should be interested , that items work ...like plug and play ...and not just after hours of angry and frustration and than a longer call with HP - Support !!!
    I am afraid to say that , by US Companys service is a strange word an other example in this case is Garmin ..if items work ..its ok , but if you need service ...thats the end of the road !!!

    I'm going to call HP support and get instructions/advice for scrapping this printer- I don't know if it has a memory to erase.. It worked OK for only 5 months exactly. 7 hours of phone time with HP support, 3 different HP support techs, 5 hours total of them trying various things to get it to connect to my WIFI, 2 hours of me on hold. I think they all ran out of ideas, so towards the end, they just put me on hold forever. I think this printer is so complex, that the only person who can fix it, is the person who designed it, and they don't know who that person is.

    Thank you! Happen now with me! 1,5 year printing normaly and then the orange blinking exclamation! You have to configurate the printer on the mobile app of HP Smart! Onthe computer no work! ON THE MOBILE PHONE ONLY! is crazy at minimum!

    This printer is complete junk. All I did was replace the cartridge and was instructed to download the firmware and hp app. Now when I try to print it's either suck on looking for printer or says printer off line. Also the HP App say's printer is unavailable. I've done factory reset, unplugged it from electrical outlet, restarted computer. I'm on a Mac. Would appreciate any help.

    I have also always thought highly of HP laser printers, till I also wasted hours trying to get the HP - LaserJet M140we to work.
    I thought it was my fault. Then my computer tech also tried and also called HP Tech support. Hours later STILL DIDN'T WORK! Bye bye Hp

    I think HP printer has superiority complex. I was trying to scan some documents today but printer was not supporting. HP Assistance suggested me to shut down your pc and printer and start printer first. i did and after printer started work smoothly.

    I just tried to set up mine. It only printed up a paper with info about the printer. It says the pages have been exhausted?? What does that mean? I have been messing with this for 2 days now. You can't choose the options it forces you to do all this extra stuff. There is a HP company where I live. I sent them an email, no response yet. I hope I didn't just lose $150.00 well, 200 cuz I bought an extra back up toner cart. when I bought this one. NO MORE HP for me, even if I get this one working, it's too much to go through just to simply print papers. I have never heard of or tried to print from my phone? That's new to me. HP should recall these printers. There was nothing on the box that stated it required the internet. The only reason I can think of that HP would do this is because they want your personal info. Corporations are sneaky like that..

      Before getting this printer I checked it for USB connector. It has. I hoped I can use it easily like a Plug&Play printer through USB. I proposed using Wifi later when it becomes a necessity. BUT this terrible printer - the printer software - forces WiFi installation. I hate giving any not necessary information to others. Unfortunately the factory reset (pushing red X and down arrow simultaneously when turning on the printer and releasing them when nu display appears) did nothing with the flashing yellow warning symbol. I will try the advanced settings mentioned above, but first I have to figure out how can I reach this possibility. admin user name and the psw (PIN) is ok, but where is the site (login)? (The HP printer dr sw tried to correct it, finally told to take it back...)

      @@laszlodudas7313 I bought mine in Oct. 2022 because I knew my old printer was on it's last legs. About 2 months later my old printer died. I took it to best buy to recycle. Come to find out when you recycle at best buy they just resell the parts. What a slimeball corporation. All of them... I couldn't return this printer. I bought a Brother monochrome printer about a month ago. It works like a charm, it printed duplex right out of the box, no setup. No internet required. I am NEVER buying HP anything again. I did more research and did you know these corporations want you to use their apps, software etc. to sell your data and they make millions off it. Corporations are just slimy low-life entities.     I picked up the same printer. Been three days and I still cant get it to print. Wouldnt connect to Wifi. Cant connect to 5G, only 2.4G wifi. App didnt work. Computer app didnt work. Waited a day and was able to install it via Apple Bonjour. Now the pin code on the app wont take the pin on the printer. You said it best, this is a printer that wont print.

    My 94 yr old mother had a CANON ink cartridge printer for 13 years. Never had a problem ever, ever. It worked via wifi and all she had to do was press a button.and bingo !!! Whqt it goin on with printers. they should work like toilets All the time with no issues

      I also hate the online connection to HP, so I tried to install it using the prohibited USB. I was successful - HP pages gave some help. I printed a few pages in two months. Then I made a mistake: I used the printer as a copy machine without turning the PC on. This caused the yellow sign blinking and my printer changed to a traffic ligth :). I tried the factory reset through buttons, the process was as described in the info, but the yellow blinking is the same and the printer does not work. I tried to finish the installation using WiFi method, but it needed to make an account and I decided not to create because of privacy concerns. I applied the HP printer doctor sw also, but it could not help, finally told take it back. (about 12 hours trying after the error).
      Till I knew USB peripherals apply Plug&Play technology. But this printer does not - may be because of yellow warning.

    Tomorrow, I'm getting my new Brother printer set up, and there will be no internet connection from the Brother company to my printer at all, unlike HP. I will feel safe, and no longer angry. They will not be able to harvest data from everything that has been printed at my end, and I predict glorious happiness with my non HP printer for evermore.

    The paper jams happen constantly because the printed sheets get sucked back in. The app etc are a nightmare as others have noted. It’s a total POS. We’ve sworn off HP printers forever.

    They forced you to sign up to all their crap before the printer works again! I did used my crap email address, fake names and random phone number to signup, it works after. This will be my last HP printer, I just want to use it and not signing up to anything!

    What a bizarre issue, where HP printer models ending in "e" hold the customer hostage. Apparently, if your printer model ends in "e" you unwittingly bought an HP+ version that is cheaper because it will only work after you register the printer with HP and agree to only buy OEM ink. So if you bought the M139w you're fine. But if you bought the M139we, the exclamation mark light will start flashing eventually. If you hit the copy button on the printer, it will spit out a sheet with a message saying it's time to register with HP or it will remain a paperweight. If you finish the setup process in the HP Smart app (on your smartphone or computer), creating an HP+ account and allowing the registration process to complete, your printer will start working again. What a pain!

    I hope this help the unfortunate people that bought this printer:
    1st reset the printer : unplug the printer, hold the up and cancel buttons, then plug the printer, keep holding until thr printer display NU
    2nd uninstall the app restart the computer and then reinstall the app, set up the printer like new and just skip the account.
    LAST BUT NOT LEAST never use the app again, use MOPRIA print and mopria scan on the phone, and it's already in the computer just click on print.

    The M140we is required to be online and you need to have an HP account for it. If you don't want that, buy an M140w instead.

    People fligh to the Moon and Printers connection is still not managed. It took me ca 1,5 hr to set it up and then when bringing it to my other office the same started again. Just now entering the 2nd hour to connect my laptop with this blody printer. Uaaaaa no no no

    I agree! Even after doing the crazy stuff it is sooo finicky! I do not recommend this printer! It's terribly frustrating!!!

    This printer has made me more anger than I have ever been I my life.
    I have four children and I work construction. But this is the thing that broke me. An over engineered piece of garbage!

    We got 2 of these absolutely awful printers. I will never buy a HP product again. One went bad today, orange exclamation mark, wtf does it want. We just need it to work!

    You can reset wifi/firmware. Wi-fi + cancel for few seconds, and printer will turn off. Than you can register the printer from beginning.

      Yes I've done this twice now and the light still is there and won't let me print even tho it is connected to the wifi and connected to the app on my phone and laptop

    After 12 hours trying and Internet browsing, I decided to give up my privacy concerns and created a HP account. I refused the HP+ service, I don't need shipped cartridges. And see the miracle: the yellow blinking signal disappeared, the test page is printed correctly and I succeeded printing my ticket for the next day for the Athletics World Championship in Budapest. Unfortunately I could not sleep and I will drive 3 hours tomorrow eer today... I suppose the WiFi printing will work, the HP will see all my documents and I can forget my successful USB installation... All because I did a fault trying the printer for copying without turning on the PC...
    If I will have enough time I will try to destroy the WiFi connection to the printer and reinstall it using the USB. May be turning off the WiFi and using the USB cable for such actions will work.
    One remark: during tryings I saw that the HP could read my router password - they asked me to check it - I was really surprised that they could read it. I will buy a laptop and use that without network connection to get some privacy.
    So finishing the WiFi-oriented install solved the blinking yellow error signal (for me).

    Don"t buy this printer, I was told by a guy at Staples Canada this printer had a lot fo returns. They can"t take it off the shelves because they are not allowed to do that with products. I purchased older model 2 yrs ago. Then after 8 mths problems, it wouldn't print. It said " Searching for printer " , " media jam:' . I called HP and they told me it was a wifi issue. Talked about 5 G speed and having cable CO to offer different G power. Becasue it is an older printer model. ( ? what? ) Cable company installed a stronger modem and router. Still didn"t work. A techy friend installed updates. And as always got first couple of copies. And as soon as he went away and I started printing didn"t work.
    So, I got a new version,. . HAD A TECH GUY INSTALL PRINTER TO MAKE SURE IT WAS DONE CORRECTLY. GOT THE FIRST 6 COPIES AND AGAIN ' MEDIA JAM' AND SEARCHING FOR PRINTER. WHEN I OPENED AND CLOSED THE CARTRIDGE COMPARTMENT, THE PRINTER WOULD START UP AGAIN AND GIVE ME THE COPY.

      I wondered why the Staples guy was not singing any praises of this HP.
      After two of us and HP tech support spent a total of 6 hours trouble shooting, it is going back to Staples.
      Bye bye HP.

      Internet is good for a firmware updates on printers. I have a canon printer that had a bug for years. Then 1 day I decided to connect it to the internet and it instantly the bug was fixed. It's still printed though even without being connected to the internet. This HP thing is horrible.

    they are asking creditcard info and do not let you use more than 100 pages per mont if you not pay monthly for ink as they say. And you print or not, after half a year you have to purchase new license. scammers! I've been robbed😢!!!
