Im about to refurb my steering rack and UJ as there is significant play - all the rubber is perished on my 43 year old 1500. Wish me Luck, I am hoping I can do it without removing the steering column and do it all from inside the engine bay. Great Videos!
Hi Steve. Blimey ! I didn't think anyone would ever find out about my dodgy repairs !😂😂😂 Seriously , you have a habit of making tasks look easy, which l guess is the plan. And not too many of us would have spotted the differences between the mk3 and 4 . I guess it's the same principle for the TR6. Thanks Steve.
Cheers John, with the TR6 column they are pretty similar, only a TR6 column is about 4 inches shorter. It's not unheard of for Spitfire columns to get used on TR's for taller drivers
Ah , young knees on hard surfaces ! Enjoy whilst you can - me I would use knee protectors now if I had my time again . Steering and brakes are two things you should never compromise on so it's sad to see the previous bodging you have thankfully put right. Great stuff.
Cheers John, I did start to get knee problem a few years ago, but now I tend to use the blue mat that the steering column was on, and my knees are thanking me for it. I couldn't agree more with repairs, I always think that with steering suspension and brakes your putting your life and others peoples lives in your hands, therefore they should done right
Yeah, it’s a TR6 lower steering column UJ from Moss Europe, you can also pick them up from eBay for Lotus Elans, but I find Moss tend to be better quality 👍🏻
@@SteveDentonClassics Excellent, many thanks for your help Steve and for this excellent video. I have my Spit 1500 column apart on the bench and am about to start the rebuild process.
Hey Steve, I would like to install the up-rated steering column UJ in my 72 GT6. Did you get one from Moss Europe for your Spit. Did the one for the TR6 Fit? Thanks, Jerry in Jupiter, FL , USA
You have to remove the speedo and rev gauges with a TR6 to gain access to the column mounting bolts, then contend with with steering UJ which needs a couple of jubilee clips to compress it to get the bolts out and back in. Other than that, once removed, they are very similar, just a Spitfires steering column is a little longer in length to a TR6 👍🏻
Hey Steve, I have owned my 72 GT6 since new so any poor repair I find is my fault. Hard work keeping these cars on the road for sure, congratulations on your effort. I would like to up-rate my column UJ to the one from Moss, they don't show any listing for the GT6, do you think the one listed for the TR6 will work for me?
Hi Will, it would be the same as the one for a Triumph Spitfire or Lotus Elan. You can also buy them on eBay if you search for Lotus Elan, Triumph Spitfire, Herald, GT6, Vitesse lower steering UJ Upgrade 👍
Nice job, you'll be amazed how many cheap repairs were done in the past, and dangerous for everyone. Still working on the ground? I know things can't fall from the bench..hahaha.
I like to keep things real working on the floor, but there are times I really wish I had a hoist. With the Spitfire it's great going through all the little jobs and making it right to how it was when it was built, doing some sympathetic hear and there, and it gives some real great content to my channel

Cheers mate, you can do it but if your upgrading then the upgrade is a little longer so the column has to be moved up a little 👍
Well done Steve buddy, awesome vlog, all the details and info we could ask for, roll on the next
Cheers mate 👍🏻

You’re welcome, just glade my video was of some help to you 👍🏻
Really enjoyed that video it went into a lot of detail which is really helpful as I'm doing my mk1s steering.
Cheers mate, I'm glade my video has been of some help to you. I'd love a Mk1 Spitfire, very pretty looking and rare car these days
Nicely done
Cheers mate 👍

Was the replacement UJ that Moss sell the one that is for the TR6? (I can't find the UJ type for a Spitfire on their website).

@@SteveDentonClassics Thanks for getting back to me Steve, would you happen to have the Moss part number handy? There are so many steering UJs.
Hi Will, with Moss it’s part number 145377 👍🏻
Steve, is that a new logo in the bottom corner? looks great either way.
Cheers Graham, I've had it for about a year now, I'm thinking of getting a real of car stickers to sell with that logo on as merchandise
good idea, we could all spot each other then.
