To anyone else with anxiety, if you can do these things: 1. keep tank stance on 2. use lots of aoe's to grab and keep aggro 3. pay attention and try to pick up any mobs going after dps and healers 4. face the mobs away from your group 5. move out of aoe's (to save your healer a headache) and then move back to your spot once they finish casting so the mob doesn't turn around and cleave your group 6. keep one mitigation cooldown going whenever they're up to reduce your need to be healed so your healer can contribute to damage (ps: use mitigation like rampart at the beginning of boss fights because they always start with raidwide damage and a tankbuster) Then you will be light years ahead of many beginner tanks.
I know I'm late but I'd like to add a few points 5.5 for the purpose of this manuver, at high levels, gap closers are your friends 7. when in an istance there are multiple tanks, try not to start a provoke war ,but reserve it if the MT dies to quickly grab aggro on the boss.
(A tiny bit more advanced) Also adding to this just keep your stance on unless you are alone and not in a dungeon/trial. Also if you are in an 8 man raid/trial do not turn on your stance if the other tank did first unless the fight calls for swaps.
You're forgetting the most important thing during dungeons. Don't turn your back / side towards mobs. EVER. If they hit you from anywhere but the front, you become squishy. This makes a lot of people panic because they take more dmg despite using shields. Keep the mobs in front of you. And don't ever listen to FFXIV memes, it's all a joke and not to be taken too seriously.
I do all those things and still get anxiety even when party tells me I'm doing great lol. Just like in video I slaw dark knight in shadowbringers trailers so I literally bought whole collection started as dragoon and after I got samurai max later on(kinda strayed away from my first class) I went to dark knight and I'm level 47 but my biggest issue is you're the leader of all the content unless you have a main tank and your a off tank which gives me incredible anxiety cause I'm not a leader. Last time I ever lead anything was top scoreboard when I played esports for R6 that's it other then that I'm to shy and anxious xD. It's easier point and shoot then make sure you are doing all these mechanics right all time lol.
@@SeloriaCaelum don't worry to much if you occasionaly fail a meachanic , some times errors happens , and outside of savage/extreme content a single mistake is nothing to worry about , hell , at level 80 in normal dungeons , if you manage your mitigations well (and on this front TBA is broken), you can even live trough five stacks of vulnerability up or live long enough to finish off a boss even if the healer is dead (this last thing is a lot easier to do with paladin and dark knight than warrior or gunbreaker)
@@shaunnaruto dark knight has the best mitigation in the game wdym? Its anti-tank buster (living dead) is awful because it has to be balanced against blackest night which is op by comparison.
my biggest fear as a tank is leading my party through a dungeon that i have no idea where to go. Or in a raid where there are 2 tanks and learning when and where to swap tanks
Dont worry I am on the same page as you! I did shadowbringers dungeons for the first time on tank and it was horrifying. But in terms of exposure therapy now I am not really scared to try out new dungeons. Hopefully it gets better with time :)
btw in Shadowbringers you can go into a new dungeon (only the Shadowbringer ones) with Trusts NPCs it helps you learn the mechanics of the dungeon before you do it with other people
You can also do Command Squadrons in certain earlier dungeons, but it takes some work to get to the advancement within your Grand Company., and to level up the Squadron itself, before this becomes available.
This right here is where it’s at. If you’re that nervous use the grand company system for earlier dungeons to practice with npc’s and then the trust system for I think level 70 or so and up dungeons.
I'm a healer main and tbh I'm getting more anxiety playing as a dps cause I wanna squeeze as much dmg as possible 😂. Good for you! And solid advices tbh :). 👍
I totally understand where you are coming from. Even with tank, im trying to make sure I maintain aggro and still do decent damage. I appreciate the kind words, I will definitely be putting out more content soon :)
to be honest I have more anxiety doing dps than tank and heals. dps anxiety of screwing up the rotation and u feel like uve wasted those precious seconds missing out on the dps especially as a monk when u forget to upkeep ur grease lightning and have to gain back all of it again.
I'm exactly the same! It's just a totally different mindset. Honestly I think the only thing that got me to level Gunbreaker was GUNBLADE JOB and not anything about the mechanics XD
Many videos on this means it must be normal. Good to know I am not alone. We might have more tanks in the game if people give advise first instead of just saying. “You are too slow” or “you are a bad tank “
The thing is not all ppl say that but then again some say stuff like that bc atm the tank skill celling is very low for tanks u just turn ur stance on and spam aoe on mob with mitigation here and there then use single target abilities on bosses and do ur 123 thats about it atleast thats how it is in dungeons
This game has been my first real MMO experience so I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I chose gladiator lol. I knew absolutely nothing about tanking going into my first dungeons. Didn’t even understand tank stance or enmity until I was ~lvl 25. But the community has been super helpful and I haven’t been flamed once. Even giving me tips when I do things wrong. Feel really lucky this community has been so welcoming!
Im glad to hear about your awesome experience so far! Yeah the community in ffxiv is pretty helpful and will give you tips when they can. Keep up the good work I hope you stick to tanking and enjoy the rest of the leveling experience 😀
The biggest thing that helped me get over my anxiety was looking at what other tanks were doing”wrong” and how little it actually affected me and the rest of the group so I figured if other tanks make these small mistakes all the time I can get away with it too
Oh me too ! While I didn't completely abandoned the idea of tanking (I just love this role so much but it triggers too much anxiety for me), I just hit lvl 50 yesterday and I immediately unlocked Samurai. And now I'm DPSing in dungeons where I don't feel comfortable enough to tank.
Me-Im a new tank, thanks for understanding FFXIV-Ok no problem WoW-*instant vote-kick* Ugh What armor set are you wearing in that cinematic? Its fantastic!
Yep, that definitely sums up one of the major differences in the communities as they are now, WoW used to be very much like ff14 back when it first came out and about halfway into burning crusade but then it started going downhill which was sad to watch, only times I've seen an ff14 group flame a tank or healer or done it myself is when they are purposefully being bad, not listening to the advice of others and then blaming it on everyone else.
Main tanking is typically pretty easy due to being able to hold aggro so well. Being the off-tank is when it gets harder. You have to be much more aware of the battlefield to deal with mechanics, adds, and protect teammates including assisting the main tank with mitigation. In some cases the off-tank might be doing some completely unrelated task that prevents a huge amount of damage or debuff.
@@officialgritty4740 that depends, in savage and ex trials you have to do positionals of the boss as mt such as draging it at the right time to a edge of the arena ect. also mt=ot in savage content, since literally every savage boss force an tankswap, so there doesnt exist a mt or ot since both play both.
Some advice for tanks that never come up in guides, and this applies to light party dungeons usually, but may apply elsewhere: All melee jobs, especially Monk, need to be able to stand on the rear location of the enemy, and one of the flanks. Don’t leave that part sitting in a hazard like a poison or fire pool, or they’re not having a good day deciding on the massive DPS loss (Monk, less so on other jobs), or taking extra damage and annoying the healer. Part of this tip is also understanding that a rotating boss is annoying. Try to keep them facing the same direction unless you have to move to avoid damage or perform mechanics
As a MNK main, a very much appreciate you bringing up this point. To any tanks reading this, if you have really any melee DPS in your party, please do your best to keep the boss still and the rear out of Bad. We DPS monkeys understand it's not always possible as some bosses like to twirl around like a stupid ballerina on their own, but if you make an effort to keep it still and safe for me, man will I love you.
I straight up got kicked out of dungeons when I first started tanking because people would facepull the whole dungeon before me while I'm stressing about what button to click next, despite telling them I'm new to the job.. and I got over it by a mixture of pure anger, aggression and suicidal tendencies. now, I'm not a tank, but a gambler
Keep in mind majority of fights post ARR has a built-in tutorial with bosses. It will always start with raidwide AOE then followed by tank buster. So pay attention to those two first attacks and you'll be peachy for the majority of the fight.
Yes this is a good tip! Tanks always pop rampart or another mitigating cooldown during the early part of the fight so you don't get walloped by a tankbuster.
@@MrZockio To be fair if you go into Savage or Extreme as a tank you probably know what you are doing and don't have anxiety. The people who do will never try Savage or Extreme as a tank.
A tip as a tank main, for both healers and tanks especially LEVELED GEAR IS KEY, even being like 2 levels below drops your survivability for just even normal pulls by a ton. You might get by doing sub par dps with gear thats like 5 levels below the dungeon level, but not with tanking
I started as PLD, but dropped after getting on lvl 60 for getting anxious with harder content. I dropped and played as MCH and WHM through everything else. Now months after I'm getting back to relearn tank! My DRK is on 70 right now and I'm feeling way better after at least knowing the content. I'll try harder tanks later too to se which one I like better.
What has worked for me is being open and candid if I’m unfamiliar with a raid and invite the other party members to offer tips if they want. Most people are understanding and encouraging, because they know I’m unfamiliar with boss mechanics and such. An upside is that you are basically married to the healer. But you need to repay that favour of being understanding if you’re healer is new.
In my experience so far with FFXIV, dungeon groups are nice. If you give them a heads up about being new to tanking, the dungeon, or even tanking class...9/10 the group will be chill about it. The biggest compliment I can get as a tank (the few times I do the job), is when I get that player recommendation. That means more to me than gear.
I'm so glad you mentioned that! Letting them know you are new to the job/dungeon/ role does wonders. I never really thought about it but you are totally right. Getting the player commendations is one of the best feelings ever.
@@zyliath4062 trial roulette, Titania, the big cone tankbuster I think its called divinity rune, one shot the entire party... At 3%... I was trying to escape an aoe and spun the boss at a bad time
Yeah, saying in party chat that you're new to tanking goes a long way. Also, don't get discouraged if some rando is a jerk just because you made a mistake. Contrary to popular belief, there are toxic assholes in ffxiv too
100% agreed! It definitely helps to let everyone know you are new. Not getting discouraged is so important because like you said there are jerks in pretty much all games. I appreciate the comment !
Ahh yes, pulling without tank stance on ... been there, done that. Doesn't help that the damn thing keeps switching itself off when you enter instances ...
Nice video! Glad you overcome your anxiety! I once stated that I'm still learning how to tank, so I pulled small because I wasn't confident. But the healer discouraged me because small pulls bored them. Until this day I won't tank alone if the healer isn't someone I know. Maybe I'm being too much but I personally hate tanks that screw the party, and I don't intend to be one.
Hey man, as a Tank player, a few things. First off, I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience with a healer. You don't deserve to be chewed out over taking it slow. May I recommend trying low lvl dungeons to play with less risk? Most people in those dungeons are new, and don't mind or even notice your mistakes as much. Practice makes perfect, and I believe that you are a mighty fine tank. You got this.
best part of being tank or healer? oh theres a long que? flashes role card, right this way to the front of the line, ignore the dps u pass. I started as healer and i cant take dps que times.
I started this game as a DPS, drg was my first job in ARR and i always assumed that the queues were like that for a reason, midway through 2.4 i started playing WAR and now i legit see a queue longer than less than 5 min and wonder if its worth waiting for an fc member or something to get on before doing whatever content it is lol. I will say though, queue times are infinitely better now than they used to be.
What helps me most with tanking anxiety is learning the dungeon im going to do, boss tactics and the map of the dungeon. Once i learn that, im able to finaly enjoy myself. The way i do it is 1st by watching a video about the the dungeon, then i go and do it several times as healer or dps to see how other tanks do it and then, i do it several times as a tank untill i fully understand it. It takes time and it seems exagerated, but since im not a "natural" leader nor im very coodinated, this is the only way for me to be a decent tank and actualy enjoy playing it. What i like in FFXIV is that tanks arent requiered to be extra fast and do everything in a rush, like we need to be in WoW mythic+, so that makes FFXIV tanking so much more fun for me.
That is some great advice! Research about the dungeon like watching videos can really help with understanding because you have an example of what the person is doing. That way you are prepared for anything to come! I also agree, the pace of tanking in FFXIV is way more fun because there is so much less stress involved in the process. Thanks for watching the video and providing your insight :)
I'm a healer main, and I only tanked enough to unlock PLD. That being said, the early dungeons weren't too bad, but it feels like there's way more responsibility on tanks. Not to mention, in my short time on tank, I met way more toxic people than in my time as acn/sch.
One thing i think that also helps is whereby you had that bad experience in wow with people raging at you its very rare for ff14 to roast you for tanking most will offer advice on how to improve and get better. The ff14 community is great community.
Probably helps that FF does an amazing job of letting you play everything you want on a single character. I've made a point to play 4 different combat classes to learn how each role works, and have an idea of what the different classes expect out of each other
Wait, I’m not a sprout tank anymore. Why am I watching this? Lol Tanking has changed so much in this game, that it’s pretty easy compared to before. No enmity combos or stance dancing. You just turn on tank stance and go ham. But boy, did I have a big case of tank anxiety when I first started out. All the tips here are good. Communicate with your team and get more experience with the job. Edit: there’s also the trust system and company squadron system that new tanks can use to practice if you want to try things solo.
I have *severe* Tanxiety so I know all those feels. The addition of the Trust System in Shadowbringers makes so many things possible in terms of learning roles that it's astounding. When running Trust dungeons, watch how the NPC tank handles packs and bosses. The coding on them is actually rather brilliant, if scaled back dramatically from what was possible for automation of party members in FFXII since the system is based on the one used there. So far I'm really only any good in dungeons, some (normal) Trials, and the Crystal Tower Alliance Raids, but at least it's progress AND I was able to get Gunbreaker to 80 for the Role Quest completion!
I was and still am in the same boat to a degree. I've ALWAYS been a dps main. I played WoW for 15 years. Way back in vanilla WoW, when no one knew anything, I started as a Paladin because I figured hey, they match up with the whole holy knight aesthetic, sword & shield, etc. Tried tanking as a paladin in vanilla, when they had no taunt/provoke ability, and I was new to the game(as was everyone, this was 2004). It went very badly. I was playing with friends I knew from a different game but still, no one enjoys being in a dungeon run that's going extremely poorly compared to what you'd expect it to be. I hung up tanking pretty much right then and there and swapped to dps, and 99% of my time playing mmos have been as a dps, and usually melee dps at that. So because of that, I started XIV as a Dragoon. Leveled it up to the end of Heavensward, then I swapped over to Samurai and that has been my main job since. I love Samurai, I love the way it feels to play at 80, I love the rotation and it's flow, and I love playing dps classes that are essentially "GCD locked" meaning little to no down-time at all, you're ALWAYS pressing something with no real breaks(for reference, it's why I loved playing Fury Warrior in retail WoW). When playing classes like that, especially in mechanic intensive fights that require a lot of movement while having to maintain high dps up-time, it's a challenge I enjoy. So now that I'm done with the MSQ until Endwalker comes out, I'm starting to set my eyes on other things to do, and leveling up a tank and healer job so I have access to all 3 roles feels like something highly worthwhile to have. Even though I'm new to tanking in XIV, I'm not new to the flow of dungeons in the game or how it feels to be a dps WITH a good tank in the party. It also helps that I've been playing MMOS that use the holy-trinity concept(tank/dps/healer) for over 15 years. Even with that, there was still a lot of anxiety when first starting out. I don't like having my time wasted, and I don't want to waste anyone else's time, even if I AM trying to learn. The bulk of my anxiety comes from having the responsibility of setting the pace in a dungeon/raid. Or going into a duty I haven't done before and thus don't have every mechanic memorized. Even if I do watch the fights on youtube first, typically. Some advice I can give so far: 1. The very first thing you do upon entering a duty is verifying tank stance is active. If it's not active, turn it on. THEN you can tell the party you're a rookie tank still learning. 2. Goes along with what I said in #1, but tell the group you're still in the process of learning to tank, whether you're new to the game or it's just not your primary role. 3. More than one target? Spam those AOES. How efficient you are potency wise doesn't matter here like it would as a dps, we just want to establish enmity on all targets. We're not trying to min-max while learning here, anyway. We just want to fulfill our role effectively. 4. Always face mobs away from the rest of the group. Not just bosses, but trash as well. A lot of trash mobs do frontal cone AOES. I don't want my dps having to side-step to avoid every little frontal AOE that could've been avoided if the mob wasn't facing them. If my dps doesn't have to move as often, it means they have higher up-time and do more damage. Things die faster, healer has to heal less, dungeon takes less time. Get in the habit of simply running through mobs to get them to turn around. 5. I like to ask the group to tell me if they think I should be pulling more mobs than I am. You don't want to be the kinda tank who refuses to pull more than one pack at a time, but you also don't wanna be that guy that tries to pull half the dungeon at once, after you sprinted far ahead of your healer, only to get clapped and then watch as the rest of the party wipes. 6. Try to always keep one mitigation(anything that lessens the damage you take from an enemy) ability on reserve, so you can use one as often as possible throughout the dungeon. Basically, don't stack mitigation abilities on one pull, then be left with nothing on the next.
Yes! This is very sound advice and your perspective on this is greatly appreciated. I definetly agree 1st thing above anything else is tank stance. Telling them you are new will settle their expectations well. And then in regards to AOE, positioning, dungeon flow and mitigation you are spot on! I am so glad you enjoyed the video and I hope there were some things you took away from it!
I can relate to a lot of this, but my experience differs in that I’ve loved tanking and healing. I did heroic and mythic raiding on wow and I was always in my comfort zone but when it came to dps I was absolutely trash and I hated doing it because I always felt like I let my teams down. When I came to ffxiv I said screw it; I want a SMN and now I’m dealing with the anxiety of being a dps but a lot of what you’re saying is so important and I’ve been able to see my growth. One thing I will add, is don’t be afraid to ask questions because if you don’t people will notice. We’re all new at one point, we’ve all been there!
As a new tank the hardest thing I've been dealing with is navigation.... I've been so used to following tanks before so actuality having to navigate through dungeons has been tough for me 😆 I always try to let people know I'm new also and everyone so far has been very helpful!
I think they realized this and a lot of the dungeons get more and more straightforward as you progress, once you're past the mid 40s dungeons everything is just a fancy corridor.
THIS IS A GREAT TIP!! Yeah having awareness about whats going on is sooo sooo important. Thank you for your insight, I hope people see this because its definitely really important. Hope you enjoyed the video :)
Lesson 1: Remember tanking is MUCH different from other games. Forget what you've learned in WoW. I've been maining tank since 3.0 and it's always been one of the most relaxed job (outside of the 24 man raids which always get really hectic.) Tanking is pretty easy in FFXIV for the most part. What you have to keep in mind is that grabbing and holding enmity is the most important thing. DPS comes second. Your most important tool when grabbing mobs in dungeons is your AoE combo. When playing DPS, I often see people not using it enough. A rule of thumb that has been around for years is of there's 3 or more enemies, you should be spamming your AoEs. Also utilize skills like Provoke and your long range attacks for enemies that are far away to pull them to you instead of dragging the pack around. Positioning is a big thing too. When grabbing mobs, your objective is to not move much and keep the enemies facing away from the group. I sometimes see new tanks running around or circling for whatever reason. No, stand still...in doing this, you throw off any directionals for melee jobs like Monk and Dragoon. Standing in one spot allows them to hit the sides they need and deal more damage. Using mitigation tools will have healers loving you. Lol. DRK definitely has one of the best. If you're a PLD main, don't save Hallowed Ground for an "oh shit" moment, use it on a big pull. If you play Warrior, thrill of Battle actually increases the amount of healing recieved and heals you. Throw Heart of Light on a teammate about to be targeted with an attack if you play GNB. Stun enemy AoEs with low Kick. I promise you, your team will appreciate it. I will say that some of the 8 man and 24 man raids can be tough (for me at least) but all other content isn't bad at all. As long as you know your job, you can't fail. And if people have a problem with something, be open-minded and take advice. That's the way to become better.
tried tanking in WoW, i am glad they understand but my problem is the dungeon layout makes it possible for me to get lost ffs. yeah some have straightforward maps but if you got your ass stuck in either Cata maps or classic maps you are doomed. and also FF14 have tank stance so it makes tanking easier, the rest is learning the mechanics especially in 5.0 since tank can never lose aggro if they hit tank stance.
It's been so long yet I'm still not the greatest! I feel you on that, but with practice and determination you will eventually get to where you want to be !
@@AstroSayn your right. In the short time I posted the comment, I went through a transformation and progressed tremendously. I am doing fine. Also, I won't complain about teammates since some could be new.
Had major tank anxiety but kinda pushed through it. Now I have 3 lvl 80 tanks and WAR is on its way to 80 as well. Couldn't go back to dps cuz I love tanking a lot. :)
Awww, RUclips is comprehending such wholesome videos to me today. I used to main DPS myself, but I played the game before the tanking incentives were added, so I ended up getting over my tanking anxiety because I lived through the era when tanks would flat out walk out of a dungeon right at the start if they didn't feel like running whatever roulette they ended up in. I got really upset at seeing tanks lord over people and essentially holding people hostage for their services so I took up Warrior and worked my ass off not to be one of those guys. Remembering to turn Tank Stance on at the start is usually +100 respect points from everyone involved, as the game sort of forgets to tell you that it gets turned off when you join a dungeon, even if you had it on before.
I had this issue, it did help that I love playing healers so my main job was WHM and it really did help get over the fear of responsibility and knowing the importance of item level and using mitigation before starting tanking but yeah, luckily most people are nice in FF14 if you communicate that you're new or need assistance. Especially as a healer, my best memory in ShB was hard carrying an undergeared tank in Mt Gulg that was severely struggling but he was extremely nice and we were able to push through, we gave advice and I felt like a godly healer using all my skills in the role I love, and everyone left relieved and feeling accomplished and I'd actually run with him again just because of his attitude because people get better through practice if they have a humble mindset and are willing to listen to advice and try ya know?
As a tank main with tank anxiety FF has made me feel so much better about myself and my ability, I didn't know how easy it was to farm commends just because I know how to keep aggro and I knew some general mechanics much earlier than most would
@@AstroSayn I've certainly met a few arseholes along the way, but for every one there have been equal if not more people who are offering advice. And most people are just reassuring which can be enough to make you play better.
As a tank main (I currently main Gunbreaker on XIV), I never understood tanxiety. Which is why I was always a terrible person to ask how to get over it, because all I know it "have confidence" and "just do", and if you don't know "act like you know what to do". What you said in this video puts into words what I always fail to do so.
tbh for me i got rid of my fear of tanking when i decided not to care what my party is gonna say,, but i also make it a point that im gonna do my role well,, if they like it, good, if not, then i dont mind lol
Dont be like that just know this if they say something mean like "u are bad stop tanking"then ye sure u can ignore them but if they tell u what u did wrong and how to fix it then its better to listen specially atm tanking is way to ez in shadow bringers so it doesnt hurt to listen if someone offers u a tip bc trust me if u listen u will be good in no time since the skill celling for tanks are very low unless u are doing savage then thats a whole different story depending on the fights and ur rotation aswell as ur boss placements
As someone who mains melee dps, I always kept an eye on what tanks did during content and emulate the things that tanks did that i liked. Then picked up paladin and put it to practice.
Tanking used to be a lot more difficult in earlier expansions. In 4.55 and earlier aggro management was the responsibility of the entire party, not just the tank, and this caused a lot of issues with black mages refusing to use lucid dreaming (which at the time reduced aggro) and red mages using single target rotation on aoe mobs.).
Shadowbringers actually made me enjoy tanking a lot LESS because of the changes to threat which basically made it so as long as the tank is pressing buttons and hitting enemies with basically anything, they'll never lose threat. They made threat into something mundane and completely pointless, it exists in the game now just for purposes of letting the enemy AI know which person to repeatedly punch in the face.
@@ridleyroid9060 I really enjoyed stance dancing as a WAR in SB, but I felt the balance amongst the jobs was poor. It was weird that the WAR was the only tank that could turn their Aggro stance on/off as an ogcd. There was also the weird differences between tank cds and DRK in general was a hot mess. I'd prefer it they brought some form of aggro management back from SB but not spread the responsibility to the whole party, just on the tank. I miss the cool stuff you could do with SB WAR, but I'm overall fine with how tanks are atm.
I'm still gonna say play a DPS first if you have anxiety or if you're a sensitive person. (No shame in being so btw.) When I was a low level sprout I had a healer get full toxic on me in a low level dungeon, called a complete piece of shit tank and a moron and other things I wouldn't repeat here, because I wasn't multi-pulling and he died trying to pull more packs himself. (lmao!) We just vote kicked his ass and the other guys nicely told me that I should pull at least 2 packs and we all moved on, I've dealt with far worse people in WoW so not a big deal to me. But after that, I can understand "tanxiety" when pieces of shit like that guy roam in the community telling insecure and inexperienced tanks that they're complete garbage and should uninstall the game. I know other people can would really get hurt by that kind of comment. (Also gives a terrible first-impression of the community when you have the bad luck of meeting one of those gentlemen after only 10 hours.) If you play DPS first, you can see what other tanks do and it reduces the risks of you getting yelled at.
I played this game when it came out, left, and I'm thinking about coming back. Tanking is ok. Do your best and say, who cares if I fail. Just get another group. People complimented me a good job, I just did my best, and it pays off
Me too. I came back and Im glad I did! Yes you have to play through 2 other xpacs (theyre good) to get to Shadowbringers but HOO BOY was it worth it! Unless you hate having any emotional involvement with a videogame-then maybe not as much 😅
You got me with this video, my main job in FFXIV is Dragoon and the second job I had for my character is guess what? Dark Knight! Man how can you resist not having that job with its cool aesthetics. Things is, I wasn't good at tanking as well. Like you I tried to learn tanking in every way I could, I watched videos, I tried to learn from my fellow FC members, and also made some disclaimers at the start of a dungeon that I'm new to tanking (luckily we have a very nice and helpful community in FFXIV). Things that I can impart for a better tanking are, know your skills first and what they do, and take the time to research the trial/dungeon you're running. Overtime, I was able to learn the ways to a better tanking. I'm not the best yet but at least now I have the confidence to run a dungeon from end to end. Right now, I already have the four tank jobs for my character and been enjoying tanking ever since (been awhile since I played DPS). So excited for my Paladin for the upcoming Endwalker expansion 😊
I started tank and (imo) I still suck cuz my hand eye coordination are not rlly the best, but this was very reassuring and made me feel better. So Thank you.
I'm a sprout only started playing three months ago, I started out as Gladiator/Paladin because I wanna get that Dark Knight job needless to say I was kinda in awe the way you are when you saw that Dark Knight job. About earlier this month I created a second character with a Pugilist/Monk job because I was interested in learning DPS as well. That is when it hits me, I was in a dungeon run and I saw this other Tank, twas a Marauder tank and the way they play is way better/efficient than me (or at least thats what I thought). I kinda came with a realization that I wasnt doing well enough as a tank, so I did more dungeon run as a DPS to see how other Tanks plays and try to apply what I learned from my observation to my first character with my own playstyle and the results was not great. I got grilled by one of the more veteran player, I remember that I was told my Tanking is erratic and sloppy I should pull in bigger mobs so it'll save more time and there's no way that a Paladin would play as poorly as me. Afterwards I picked a new DPS job for my 1st character and I choose Rogue/Ninja and have been building my Ninja ever since that moment. Now I'm not really used to play online MMORPG as a matter of fact I've never played online MMORPG before so I have zero knowledge in terms of tanking like mitigation, skill rotation and etc. The only thing I know as a Tank is keep all the mobs aggro at you and dont let your teammates get hit especially the healers and thats it. I kinda wanna get back in the Tank seats again but I'm not sure if I'm ready for it plus at the moment I'm building my Ninja, maybe later once I'm done with my Ninja I'll come back Tanking again
As a pro tip (from a main gnb) , when playing a tank, pull immediately face the mob/boss away from the rest of the group :3 in later fights there are things u have to stack for but mostly face them away. This is because some tank busters are cleaves which will kill everyone else as tanks have more hp than the others. Also , try to use ur ranged attack to pull from far away with the adds in a boss room because some melee have positionals that require them to hit from certain angles so moving the boss around in circles and around the room is a nono unless a mechanic specifically requires it.
Only ever tanked in mmos and ce in ff14. Something for all to keep in mind. Tanks and healers have more surface lvl shallow responsibility but in any hard content every role is equally important and mistakes are obvious to everyone regardless of role. You will not escape wiping your party or being the reason the boss enraged, everyone usually has fairly equal responsibility. Edit: my point is every role has a place to shine and kill every teammate and you WILL be the reason a fight is not cleared as a dps healer or tank. Play what is fun to you because its inescapable and you'll only get better if you like your class or role.
my crippling tank anxiety is so bad i leveled both a dark knight and gunbreaker to 70 through deep dungeons alone because i refused to tank anything lol.
Dark Knight's appeal is strong. I unlocked it ages ago but didn't really mess around with it because...you know...anxiety. Then I started using squadrons and the more I played, the more I realized that Tanking isn't as hard as I was making it out to be. ESPECIALLY Dark Knight. Now lvl 74 and I absolutely love it.
Im really glad to hear you picked up the class and are enjoying it! I definitely agree that dark knight is really not as bad as people think it is as well as tanking. By the way i am curious what is squadrons?
@@AstroSayn Squadrons are unlocked through your Grand Company. You can send them on missions by themselves or you can do command missions with them, which will let you run dungeons with them. It's basically the precursor to Trusts. They're great for trying out new jobs and such and they're pretty efficient in leveling too
@@aurorablaize Wait thats so cool! I didnt even know about that. You learn something new every day i guess! But yeah totally agree that would be a great way to learn some new jobs
FFXIV is my 1st MMO. I did the ultima raid... The other tank called me braindead and dumb. So i decided to stop MMO. Was a nice first 50 lvls but human toxicity over represented in these games i can't stand it.
Im sorry to hear that was your experience. That sounds rough af. I hope you eventually try again people can be mean but if you want something you should persue it. :) glad you enjoyed the vid
OMG LOLOLOL THAT INTRO! I subbed after that one. And I never did queue because of what you went to. So I always play DPS. And yep, anxiety is HUGE with me. Too bad WoW AOTC people don’t remember because they never they used to be a beginner one. You get judged on a raider.io score, and it SUUUCCKKKED!
Im glad you liked the intro! I totally understand where you are coming from on this. There is a lot of pressure and especially when people judge you with raider.io its not a good feeling
FF is a great game to learn in, I had the same experience tanking in WoW lucky my 2 friends would shut down any flamers. And when they realized they didn't have the votes to kick, they suddenly became helpful lol
Here are some tips for tanking in general: -when facing a boss try to get behind the boss so it turns it`s back to the rest of the group, because you can only parry what`s in front of you. This is true for players as well as npc`s/enemys, therefor you deny the opponent some defence raising the damage-output of your group. -try to save your cooldown-mitigation for bossfights, TBN and shorter mitigation-cooldowns (30 sec and less) are totaly fine for fighting ads in between bosses -when you face 1-2 enemys use your single-target abilitys, when there are 3 or more use your aoe-abilitys. This will increase your overall damage-output since 3x120 potency (360) is more than 1x300 potency -when in doubt use Living Dead, espacially if you are doing unknown content. It`s better to have it on cooldown than not using it at all and wiping the group I hope this will help you get a better feeling for DRK and the tank-jobs overall (and I hope this doesn`t sound to harsh, I don`t main tank but play it a lot for que-time reasons and often end up as the maintank even in unknown content). If you are looking for guides on specific jobs (for beginners as well as how to optimize your rotation with vast indepth knowledge) you should check out Desperius on RUclips ruclips.net/video/QkQU_by-NzA/видео.html ruclips.net/video/bAjaEpeQKlQ/видео.html ruclips.net/video/RZ6rXGz01fM/видео.html In every case, enjoy the game and have a good life, Grim Ranga from Lich
it's changed since Heavensward or Stormblood that you dodge, parry and block from all directions bosses do neither of those only difference is mobs in the overworld being able to doge your attacks when they're higher level than you. You face the boss away from the party so the whole party can be close together for easier healing and mechanics handling while melees are doing their positionals. Also you generally face bosses away from to party so cleave attacks don't hit them. and in dungeons especially when you do big pulls you use especially the big and long CDs that's where massive damage is incoming. Dungeon bosses don't hit hard except for the tankbusters and your small CD is more than enough for that. heck if you're new and you don't know which attack the tankbuster in a normal dungeon is don't worry those won't kill you except for when your healer is sleeping or greeding the hell out of it.
-try to save your cooldown-mitigation for bossfights, TBN and shorter mitigation-cooldowns (30 sec and less) are totaly fine for fighting ads in between bosses Absolutely not
The auto damage from 6 adds is higher than the auto and tank buster from the dungeon boss. Do not save cooldowns for the boss. Just use them where it hurts
I love to hear that man. Understanding what the tank is going through and being in their shoes is such a great idea! Maybe ill do that with healer as well XD
Great video 👍 I’ve ben playing FFXIV since 2.0 in late 2015. FFXIV was my first real attempt at an mmo where I learned of the roles. Like you, tank intimated me and also like you I was not interested in tank until I saw the dark knight. Now it is my main job.Everything you said is true from 2.0 to 5.0. Some tips I’d like to add for new tanks. Be aware of your gear. Too many times I see undergeared tanks doing wall to wall pulls and wondering why they are dying. Just did one the other day where a tank did the dungeon you are showing in the video, a level 80 dungeon, with level 70 gear and he tried to pull everything. Group mobs as close together as possible. It involves a bit of moving and repositioning but the dps with their aoe abilities will be very happy. Do not save defensive cooldowns. They will recharge in time for the boss. Face the mobs/boss away from the group when possible so the groups don’t get cleaved. Also, if you are going to pull large groups, aoe aggro is your friend. Again, I have seen too many pull 3+ mobs, hit aoe combo a couple times then start single target attacks. They wonder why they are losing aggro. I’m a cautious player so with drk I save 3000mp for tbn at all times in an emergency. I see sloth of drk burn through all their mp using edge of shadow then they cannot use tbn when needed. Since you mentioned healing, a great tip I found was targeted macros for your attack spells. I set up a macro where my attack spells can be set to target whoever the tank is targeting. It helps a lot when having to weave fast heals and attack spells on a controller
new players don't bother me, I actually think its fun teaching people how to do things. what infuriates me is someone that take a high responsibility role, don't know what they are doing and don't show any desire to improve.
I mostly heal and have all my healers at level 80 and let me tell you nothing is more satisfying when I'm in an off heal role and mentoring someone is getting to see their steady improvement over the course of the dungeon
Keep em coming great Video! Just started FF14 as a whole and started tanking off the bat. Lol, most ppl were nice and that helped me almost through Stormblood!
? I didn't know this exists. I always felt the safest as tank, because you hardly ever die, deeming it to be the easiest job outta the 3. Especially in dungeons, you just cd and aoe, position yourself without aggravating the healer and you're set. Because of this, despite claiming to be a SAM main, I mainly use my DRK in the endgame runs. But DDs... if I fail to pass the dmg checks in savage, it'll most likely be my fault, as well as being as fragile as paper - one wrong move, and you die, losing important dmg. And to actually have more weaves than grandma's knitted scarf is an art form that goes down to fully have it in the muscle memory if you don't wanna fail. And healers have it the hardest imo, as they basically micromanage the entire group, can multi task like no other, and are able to adapt real quick (mostly) due to having no real rotation like the rest for the most part. Huge respect to all healer mains out there - except scholars; until you become useful again, you can jump off a microwave. :x But still, tanks compared to the other roles are so darn easy, which is why I picked up this role. Because thing is, I'd be the healer you order from wish: just knowing enough to barely keep you alive. No disrespect to those who have tank anxiety, though. I hope to have WHM as a 3rd main one day, however, after I've finished my BiS for DRK and SAM. c:
I realize this video was uploaded like a month and a half ago but if you're on the Aether Data Center I'd be happy to give you some tips and tricks. I'm a DRK main. I'm not anywhere close to god tier but I know my way around the edgelord. I saw quite a few things in the video that could be improved upon to take you from new tank to average tank.
i have tanked in every MMO i have played for the past about 12 years, tanking really is not the monolith people think it is. Please just go in and make mistakes, be open about learning when others talk and just put the ones that talk down to you on your ignore list, the chances of you getting removed from a group are super low cause no one wants to wait for a tank again. The advantage of tanking in FF14 is that the community is sooooooo welcoming and people will help you FAR more than berate you for mistakes. There is also a plethora of information on the internet from basics to advanced stuff. Don't be afraid to just google things, the answer is more often than not super simple and you will beat yourself up over being apprehensive about asking questions.
As someone who just reached 80 PLD as my first/main job. I forgot what fear was..... until I realized that I’m not done with MSQ and I need to level another job.... and the one that I like is AST... fear has shown its ugly face again.
That no-tankstance pull looked rough, good thing you had a healer prepared for it! Not sure when this was recorded but that pull in Anamnesis is a rough one if you pull it wall to wall. (insert: I main tank - to no one that cares) you're doing a great job showing that everyone can tank, there's nothing to be afraid of! Hell DPS make a loooot of mistakes too, and though the mistakes are worse than tank mistakes in a lot of cases, they are not as obvious. Best way to improve is knowing you made mistakes and learn from it, you'll improve on tanking way faster than improving your dps rotation.
I appreciate the kind words! This was a few months ago so looking back at this definitely looks rough haha. But as you said, its important to learn from mistakes and improve.
I've been determined to get over my tankxiety and found that communication with a party is SUPER helpful. Especially talking to my healers immediately to see how hard of a pull they feel like they can keep us alive thru. Edit: also taking the L when I mess up goes a long way with keeping people patient with me.
There are only 5 rules of tanking in ffxiv: 1) Turn on tank stance (this is way too easy to forget >.>) 2) Start with small pulls until you know how much you can handle 3) Start with like 2 aoe to grab the aggro of all the mobs in the pull then you can either focus on 1 mob at a time or continue with aoe depending on the size of the pull 4) Remember mitigation tools...except for mf'ing superbolide (if you use superbolide or living dead, tell your healer so that they know to heal your ass) 5) Keep your ilevel up to snuff.
My Tank Anxiety stems from a deep seeded mistrust of healers that have allowed me to die thru no fault of my own. Take, for example, a run of the Minstrel's Ballad: Ultima's Bane for mentor roulette. I was on PLD and at 1 point, I just stopped receiving any heal at all. I used Hallowed Ground and STILL ended up dying due to not receiving a heal during the entire duration of HG and just ended up dead. Incompetent healers have made Tanking a no go for me.
have fun with the game man you sir have alot to learn and mess with, the game isn't really hard but the mastery cap is quite high , i would also advise you to try to clear one of the 80 extremes since they are the easiest of the "hard" content and they offer alot of insight to new players of how the difficulty of the game works, with a couple of them under your belt you can go into (savage) where the game actually happen and you can really get the fun stuff tho expect to deal with people in those soo gotta have a level head
This is exactly how I got myself to play savage content. I started in 4.5 and didn't start dabbling in even extreme content until ShB came out. Now in 5.4 I got a PUG turned static when latest tier came out. Babysteps until you get there is all I can say.
I started playing FF14 a few months ago and chose the Paladin because, you know, sword and shield and stuff. (Also, I started a few months ago but I also had a huge break recently, in between ARR and Heavensward, so it's like I'm only a few weeks into the game.) I've never played an MMO before and I had no idea how to tank. Until like halfway through Heavensward I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I died really frequently and that often lead to the deaths of my entire party and I felt really bad about it. I forgot to turn on tank stance most of the time because I always have it on while playing and never noticed when it was turned off. I'd also just face the boss at all times instead of pulling reinforcements because I'd only notice that they had arrived when it was already too late. This ended up in me being yelled at for not doing my job, quite often and I was really discouraged to the point wherr I dreaded every single time I'd have to form a party with other people. I was also on PS4, so typing in the chat took way too long and was thus not an option. But eventually, both through watching random videos and through experience, I got better. I'm now in Stormblood and while I'm still learning, I'm now at a point where I'm doing pretty well, I think. It's pretty rare for me or any in my team to actually die, I manage to keep enmity pretty much at all times and I also got better at using mitigation and recognizing boss patterns. It took me forever to get to this point but now I really enjoy playing as a Paladin and I even look forward to instance raids instead of dreading them (unless queuing takes like half an hour for no reason). I read that soms people look up how to tank an instance raid before starting it and I have no idea how to feel about that since I've never looked up a single dungeon or mechanic but I'm also doing just fine (I think, I have no idea, actually). What I'm trying to say is: It may take a while to get used to it, but tanking is actually a lot of fun, so just go for it if you wanna do it and don't worry. Everyone is bad at first but eventually you'll do better and getting to that point is a lot of fun. And if you explain that you're new, people usually understand.
Once you learn your role, what you do in battles is not much different from class to class: pressing the right buttons and maintaining situational awareness. The hardest and most anxiety-inducing part about tanking, to me, is leading the party in dungeons and raids. It's what finally made me abandon the role after trying it for a short while. I just can't handle the pressure.
I really like Dark Knight but I will not play it in end game. I loved tanking in Tera but I don't like tanking in ffxiv, the responsibility is too great and players get real toxic real quick when I failed couple times. I tried looking up guides but I can't seem to grasp the tanking mechanics in ffxiv. Now I just play healer/dps and tank for solo/msq play. Thanks for the video, maybe one day I'll get over it
I know exactly how you feel! I think I was in a similar position to you. Taking it slow and steady is the key. For now enjoy the time in solo/msq. It doesnt have to be a quick transition. As long as you just know mistakes are part of the process it will be a little more smooth. Best of luck out there, I am glad you enjoyed the video.
Tanking is quite literally the easiest role currently. Your only requirement is: .Turn tank stance on .Keep aggro .Mitigate Everything else are tiny nuances you learn as you level your respective tank.
Some days ago, I tanked puppets bunker last boss for the very first time, and when the boss uses the off arena pod attacks, I didn’t know where the safe spot was, apparently the pods teleports at the last minute, and I just stood in the aoe, I didn’t die because I’m a tank, but I caused like 8 players to die because they stood where I stood. It was quite embarrassing for me as a tank to not know what’s going on in the fight and that makes me not sure whether I want to main tank in the future.
Ahhh that sounds like a tough spot to be put into. It's alright! Everyone makes mistakes and its okay not to know every single fight. If you really enjoy tank I say go for it. You will get better with time. You can do it!!!
Gnb is my first tanking job and it sucks because I want to tank but what adds to the anxiety is the possibility of slightly higher level dungeons for a brand new tank when I want to do daily roulletes. Im levep 63 now but thats mainly from beast tribe quests 😂😂😂
The biggest tip I could give a healer or tank is; do low level stuff. Even if you pay to get a character to 70, BEFORE you jump in and start doing higher level stuff, go back to dungeons in the lower 30’s. You’ll have less skills to worry about juggling and the content is generally easier and more forgiving.
I was able to get over my tank anxiety and now GNB/DRK are some of my favorite classes. I've yet to conquer healers though. I'm traumatized from healing in cutters cry and it just did not go well lol. For now I level my WHM in the msq roulette since it's easy..
I feel you on that! Warrior/Marauder seems like a very cool class with the big axe swings. I hope you end up trying it one day. I am sure if you start small at the low level dungeons and work your way up it should really help out. Remember that in the beginning its going to be tough because its something you've never done before. Because of that making mistakes is inevitable. Its ok to make those mistakes! As long as you learn from them and keep working hard at it you should be a great tank in no time. You got this, I believe in you homie.
To anyone else with anxiety, if you can do these things:
1. keep tank stance on
2. use lots of aoe's to grab and keep aggro
3. pay attention and try to pick up any mobs going after dps and healers
4. face the mobs away from your group
5. move out of aoe's (to save your healer a headache) and then move back to your spot once they finish casting so the mob doesn't turn around and cleave your group
6. keep one mitigation cooldown going whenever they're up to reduce your need to be healed so your healer can contribute to damage
(ps: use mitigation like rampart at the beginning of boss fights because they always start with raidwide damage and a tankbuster)
Then you will be light years ahead of many beginner tanks.
I know I'm late but I'd like to add a few points
5.5 for the purpose of this manuver, at high levels, gap closers are your friends
7. when in an istance there are multiple tanks, try not to start a provoke war ,but reserve it if the MT dies to quickly grab aggro on the boss.
Really poetic he got over his tank anxiety with dark knight, who's class quest is about confronting the past and issues with yourself
Haha! The cutscene made so much sense for that. I love your deep thinking.
Dark knight is squishy. Impressed by your courage, determination and effort.
@@shaunnaruto dark knight has the best mitigation in the game wdym? Its anti-tank buster (living dead) is awful because it has to be balanced against blackest night which is op by comparison.
just started playing ff14 two weeks ago and this is exactly describing my experience lol
my biggest fear as a tank is leading my party through a dungeon that i have no idea where to go.
I'm absolutely gonna try this, been wanting to pick up a tank class for ages but I panic at the thought it.
@@Denu85 this! Exactly!
I'm exactly the same! It's just a totally different mindset. Honestly I think the only thing that got me to level Gunbreaker was GUNBLADE JOB and not anything about the mechanics XD
Aye I used to main healer and now am trying maining tank. Tanking is deff not so bad, you just got to make sure you have enmity :)
The biggest thing that helped me get over my anxiety was looking at what other tanks were doing”wrong” and how little it actually affected me and the rest of the group so I figured if other tanks make these small mistakes all the time I can get away with it too
As a someone who left Paladin for Samurai because I did not want responsibility, I try being nice to my tanks in all my MSQ
Oh me too ! While I didn't completely abandoned the idea of tanking (I just love this role so much but it triggers too much anxiety for me), I just hit lvl 50 yesterday and I immediately unlocked Samurai. And now I'm DPSing in dungeons where I don't feel comfortable enough to tank.
Me-Im a new tank, thanks for understanding
FFXIV-Ok no problem
WoW-*instant vote-kick*
Ugh
What armor set are you wearing in that cinematic? Its fantastic!
haha thanks! im pretty sure its just the bozjan southern front outfit
@@NightWhisper8462 True, I love this community
lol I say "new tank" people insta quit in ff14, never say I new again
@@ratamesorab2646 as a healer main I always see new tank as a challenge to my skill and keep me awake in these dungeon runs. Love them.
Lol my fiance tells me he always tries to main tank in stuff like trials roulette and even savage content because he "doesn't have to do as much."
Most fights OT kinda just exists, outside of savage or extremes
@@officialgritty4740 that depends, in savage and ex trials you have to do positionals of the boss as mt such as draging it at the right time to a edge of the arena ect. also mt=ot in savage content, since literally every savage boss force an tankswap, so there doesnt exist a mt or ot since both play both.
Some advice for tanks that never come up in guides, and this applies to light party dungeons usually, but may apply elsewhere:
All melee jobs, especially Monk, need to be able to stand on the rear location of the enemy, and one of the flanks.
Tanks always pop rampart or another mitigating cooldown during the early part of the fight so you don't get walloped by a tankbuster.
except savage and extreme trials
@@MrZockio To be fair if you go into Savage or Extreme as a tank you probably know what you are doing and don't have anxiety. The people who do will never try Savage or Extreme as a tank.
A tip as a tank main, for both healers and tanks especially LEVELED GEAR IS KEY, even being like 2 levels below drops your survivability for just even normal pulls by a ton. You might get by doing sub par dps with gear thats like 5 levels below the dungeon level, but not with tanking
Ahh thats a great perspective! I never really thought too much into the gearing side of it.
Getting the player commendations is one of the best feelings ever.
dude, im so glad i found this video, im going through this now. lol
Try that shit! Trust me, you'll get it!

Haha legit think its there to troll us sometimes XD
Grow some balls and remind those speedrunners that you are the one that lead the group so they should respect your pace
best part of being tank or healer? oh theres a long que? flashes role card, right this way to the front of the line, ignore the dps u pass.
I love you, you know that? TY for making this, really uplift and inspired me, while at it, sharing it others who are in need of this! ^_^
I appreicate the kind words friend !
If someone says they're new it changes everyone elses mindset. Best advice to give. Afterwards you just listen for tips/help when you mess up.
The hulk represents a healer having to use a GCD heal.

Needing more tanks is a big problem in most mmo's. We need more videos like this one . Thank you
Thanks for the kind words !
Lol
Tanking has changed so much in this game, that it’s pretty easy compared to before.
Lol I love the trust system but I never thought I'd see the day where I'm reliant on Thancred to learn something.
Some advice I can give so far:
Thank you for tanking my anxiety and and motivating me to keep at GNB and DRK
Good luck friend don't give up !
Best advice as a tank main. Zoom the camera out as far as you can so you can see if enemies are peeling off you.
THIS IS A GREAT TIP!! Yeah having awareness about whats going on is sooo sooo important. Thank you for your insight, I hope people see this because its definitely really important. Hope you enjoyed the video :)
If there’s one thing to encourage people to play tank, Tank job has the best aesthetics in the game. The armor and weapons look pretty cool.
100% agree with you. The style of the tank is straight up badass thats why I couldnt stay away from DRK.
THIS is why I went tank. 😆
Lesson 1: Remember tanking is MUCH different from other games. Forget what you've learned in WoW. I've been maining tank since 3.0 and it's always been one of the most relaxed job (outside of the 24 man raids which always get really hectic.)
Tanking is pretty easy in FFXIV for the most part.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Really helped me!
I'm glad it helped you out !😊
tried tanking in WoW, i am glad they understand but my problem is the dungeon layout makes it possible for me to get lost ffs. yeah some have straightforward maps but if you got your ass stuck in either Cata maps or classic maps you are doomed. and also FF14 have tank stance so it makes tanking easier, the rest is learning the mechanics especially in 5.0 since tank can never lose aggro if they hit tank stance.
I'm glad you posted this video. I went through something similar and I still struggle tanking with Dark Knight. Teammates suck.
It's been so long yet I'm still not the greatest! I feel you on that, but with practice and determination you will eventually get to where you want to be !

This video is just perfect for me.
@@bargainbincatgirl6698 I’m glad it helped! Good luck on your tanking journey you got this, don’t give up.
My tank anxiety would be so bad that I would take my anxiety meds to mellow myself out before queuing when I was leveling my first job to max.
As a tank main with tank anxiety FF has made me feel so much better about myself and my ability, I didn't know how easy it was to farm commends just because I know how to keep aggro and I knew some general mechanics much earlier than most would
100% would say the FF community is a great place to learn how to tank. Very supportive and kind!
Thats a smart approach! I should really be doing that haha
@@TheBubbeloo Oh yeah totally, I enjoyed the min-maxing you could do in SB. It really separated the good tanks from the jabronies.
Unless you hate having any emotional involvement with a videogame-then maybe not as much 😅
@@gateauxq4604 I love the final fantasy stories and I know this one will be great
You got me with this video, my main job in FFXIV is Dragoon and the second job I had for my character is guess what?
Suoer glad this helped you out ! Don't give up:D
Tanking as WAR easy, if you're lazy, just overpower, overpower, and maybe a little overpower
I totally relate to that! Its tough being a tank even if the aesthetic of the class is super cool. Especially because all eyes are on you!
Always great to play with friends who have your back! Thats also a great point
Here are some tips for tanking in general:
-when facing a boss try to get behind the boss so it turns it`s back to the rest of the group, because you can only parry what`s in front of you. This is true for players as well as npc`s/enemys, therefor you deny the opponent some defence raising the damage-output of your group.
-try to save your cooldown-mitigation for bossfights, TBN and shorter mitigation-cooldowns (30 sec and less) are totaly fine for fighting ads in between bosses
-when you face 1-2 enemys use your single-target abilitys, when there are 3 or more use your aoe-abilitys. This will increase your overall damage-output since 3x120 potency (360) is more than 1x300 potency
-when in doubt use Living Dead, espacially if you are doing unknown content. It`s better to have it on cooldown than not using it at all and wiping the group
I hope this will help you get a better feeling for DRK and the tank-jobs overall (and I hope this doesn`t sound to harsh, I don`t main tank but play it a lot for que-time reasons and often end up as the maintank even in unknown content). In every case, enjoy the game and have a good life, Grim Ranga from Lich
it's changed since Heavensward or Stormblood that you dodge, parry and block from all directions
bosses do neither of those only difference is mobs in the overworld being able to doge your attacks when they're higher level than you.
-try to save your cooldown-mitigation for bossfights, TBN and shorter mitigation-cooldowns (30 sec and less) are totaly fine for fighting ads in between bosses
Absolutely not
@@nolol5263 and why shouldn't you make use of them?
The auto damage from 6 adds is higher than the auto and tank buster from the dungeon boss. Do not save cooldowns for the boss. Just use them where it hurts

I’m getting over my healer anxiety and want to try out tanks so I can be a better healer
I love to hear that man. Understanding what the tank is going through and being in their shoes is such a great idea! Maybe ill do that with healer as well XD
Great video 👍
I’ve ben playing FFXIV since 2.0 in late 2015.
But still, tanks compared to the other roles are so darn easy, which is why I picked up this role. Because thing is, I'd be the healer you order from wish: just knowing enough to barely keep you alive. No disrespect to those who have tank anxiety, though.
I hope to have WHM as a 3rd main one day, however, after I've finished my BiS for DRK and SAM. c:
@SaiyanPride
? Did you even read my comment correctly? I said healers have it the HARDEST, tanks the EASIEST.
I had anxiety seeing the mob facing everyone. But I also have new tank anxiety. I know a lot of it is just jumping off the deep end.
Solid advice here! You have to make mistakes in order to learn for sure.
As someone who just reached 80 PLD as my first/main job. I forgot what fear was..... until I realized that I’m not done with MSQ and I need to level another job.... and the one that I like is AST... fear has shown its ugly face again.
Fear is easily one of the biggest preventers from trying new jobs for me. Slowly overcoming it through
That no-tankstance pull looked rough, good thing you had a healer prepared for it!
Tanking is the best role for me. I love that ish!!
It's SOOOO FUN! I'm on the same side as you I love tanking it's so fun
I've been determined to get over my tankxiety and found that communication with a party is SUPER helpful. Especially talking to my healers immediately to see how hard of a pull they feel like they can keep us alive thru.
Edit: also taking the L when I mess up goes a long way with keeping people patient with me.
There are only 5 rules of tanking in ffxiv:
1) Turn on tank stance (this is way too easy to forget >.>)
2) Start with small pulls until you know how much you can handle
3) Start with like 2 aoe to grab the aggro of all the mobs in the pull then you can either focus on 1 mob at a time or continue with aoe depending on the size of the pull
4) Remember mitigation tools...except for mf'ing superbolide (if you use superbolide or living dead, tell your healer so that they know to heal your ass)
5) Keep your ilevel up to snuff.
Bruh i saw that first pull u did and i was literally screaming TANK STANCE PLEEEASE
-Regards, a dps/healer main
One thing to note is that keeping aggro is easier in FF
I started playing FF14 a few months ago and chose the Paladin because, you know, sword and shield and stuff. (Also, I started a few months ago but I also had a huge break recently, in between ARR and Heavensward, so it's like I'm only a few weeks into the game.)
I've never played an MMO before and I had no idea how to tank.
Yeah there is definitely an aura of pressure when playing a tank role. Its definitely a huge mental uphill battle .
Your only requirement is:
.Turn tank stance on
.Keep aggro
.Mitigate
Everything else are tiny nuances you learn as you level your respective tank.
RIP Deathsign :( gone but not forgotten.
That tank we did not deserve or need XD
The only anxiety I have as a tank is seeing dps keep dying then boss rage
🤣
You can do it!!!
most imprtant thing in ffxiv what ever u r a dps tank or healer is : keep ur gcd rolling no matter what
Subscribed. Super helpful video dood.
In every mmorpg I only played tank job....the party needs to follow me or they quit.....
Gnb is my first tanking job and it sucks because I want to tank but what adds to the anxiety is the possibility of slightly higher level dungeons for a brand new tank when I want to do daily roulletes. Im levep 63 now but thats mainly from beast tribe quests 😂😂😂
yeah man doing higher lvl dungeons add to anxiety! I ended up doing like the first dungeons and it helped a bunch.
The biggest tip I could give a healer or tank is; do low level stuff. Even if you pay to get a character to 70, BEFORE you jump in and start doing higher level stuff, go back to dungeons in the lower 30’s. You’ll have less skills to worry about juggling and the content is generally easier and more forgiving.
very inspirational thanks for sharing
I was able to get over my tank anxiety and now GNB/DRK are some of my favorite classes. I've yet to conquer healers though. I'm traumatized from healing in cutters cry and it just did not go well lol. For now I level my WHM in the msq roulette since it's easy..
This video hits home. I want to try marauder/warrior but am afraid to tank haha
It’s simple, if you want it get out of your comfort zone and get used to failing as long as you learn from it
