Dino Jelusick would sound pretty cool on vocals 😉. TBH I think one of the reasons Portnoy returned was for the nostaglia of their hey day. I think this is the beggining of the end for Dream Theater. I'm not sure it makes sense to replace James at this point.

To all those in denial trying to rationalize and excuse this awful performance, just stop trying to gaslight. Many of us have been around since the beginning or damn near it. We understand age. @@pjuliano9000 i never heard about vocal nodes regarding Geddy. Aside from that, Geddy was at least in tune when singing. Didn’t sound as nice with alternative vocal lines or down tuned songs, but he was in tune. James is not in tune most of the time. Pitchy is an understatement

no one can mess with labrie. His voice was damaged by the poisoning he had with the food and his vocal cords were burned. For many years I sang very, very loud, with incredible tones. That happens to all the singers in the world.
I hadn't been following DT for a while and found out about this show on the day. Tickets between £55-£115. I have to say that I was disappointed I didn't get round to getting one having seen them several times since the late 90s. Having seen this and other videos from the show I'm actually glad I didn't go. I grant that DT is more than just the singer, but honestly, James Labrie was never the biggest draw for me in the band. It was always about the riffage, the harmonies, the technical prowess and the sheer epicness and spine tingling moments (end of Octavarium anyone?). The fact that James is obviously not able to hit the higher range any more and cuts notes short and seems to be out of breath is definitely a bad distraction. For example the line "matters the most" is thrown away here. I don't want to have to overlook a very noticeable flaw to try and enjoy a show that I've dropped a lot of money on to go and see. I hate to say it but if they want to keep going with James on vocals they need to start looking into technology to support him. Would it be cheating? Yes, but for the integrity of the overall show and the audience enjoyment it would be an idea worth considering. I'm not saying he lip sync the whole show, but there is technology that will either take over when he gets to the higher notes, or provide extra support so that it's less obvious. Pop artists use it all the time and if keeping the line up going is more important than having a singer that can handle the job this would be my suggestion. Of course you will get people complaining about that as well, so it's a no win, because you can never please everyone, but in a world where we have a complete hologram show of ABBA that people show up to in droves I don't think the majority of people will mind. Prerecord and mix the vocals with older performances where he is hitting the notes. Have it as a hidden backing track and then when he's really struggling and his voice goes below a volume threshold it takes over. That way he's not going to be fighting and can really belt out the vocals within his current range and give a better overall performance.
Uffff 70 tour dates and the comments on the first 2 shows are all saying for james to take a bow and walk away. They can't keep playing with a singer that sounds this bad live, something is gotta give....

The band can't hide it and they can't ignore it. I have tickets for March. What will I se?
I don't think they can finish this tour under these conditions, surely they will look for a solution with some autotune, or samplers for James' voice, either that or they will sink their careers forever, a band that charges that kind of money for their concerts has to meet certain requirements. minimum quality standards, and right now with that problem with the voice they are not doing it, they either react or they sink with the entire team.
