Even 7 years on this has been an incredibly useful and easy to access tutorial. You explain everything really clearly and go through every step, I always found the TS editor quite daunting but it's so much easier to use now that I have an idea of how stuff works. Great stuff, also appreciate the mirrors edge soundtrack haha
These tutorials are very useful. I like the care you take in defining your audience and delivering the essential content as well as helpful tips [or 'hacks'] like clicking on the display tool to disable the sound object visual cue. You seem like a natural teacher. I am using this to edit track in TS Simulator 2020 [i bought it on steam as ts 2019].
Very nice tutorial! I needed to refresh my knowledge of the editor since I havent used it in a couple of years. Keep up the good work, and good luck on your route.
Smooth gradient is useful to make a track mold better to terrain with a jagged gradient. After raising a track to a certain gradient and raising the terrain to roughly match that raised track, the snap to tool will raise the terrain to perfectly match the graded straight track. When I selected a section of track with a straight gradient over rough terrain the smooth gradient tool curved the track to cover the terrain. It is a tool that molds the track to fit the rough terrain versus the snap-to tool which raises and straightens the terrain under a graded track to match the straight gradient of the track. The align tool is somewhat useful especially if a mistake has been made in altering the 3-d aspect of an object. If I place a railway station besides a track and then raise it 10 meters and tip it on a 45 degree angle I can activate the align tool and then select the railway station which will be outlined in red. A red line that radiates from the center of the object perfectly aligned flat to the terrain will designate where on the terrain the object will be moved while changing the previous 3-d orientation to the default orientation. In other words, when the align tool has a box around it, any object with an altered 3-d profile can be aligned to the terrain restoring it's original 3-d default profile in relation to terrain.
Hello! Great set of tutorials. However, why didn't you use one of the train sets that come with the game instead of one you have to buy? I really can't afford the hundreds of dollars to get all the train sets. I would really love to see one that uses the ones that come with the game.
Nice tutorial, but I honestly can't believe you have never used the smooth gradient tool. It is actually really simple (and a necessity, in my opinion) to use; just click the select tool and select the piece of track that has an uneven gradient, then click smooth gradient. The editor creates a nice, smooth, curved track in the selected portion of track.
Nice job - we need more tutorials like these for beginners, but hopefully also for more complicated stuff later. By the way, I don't have a lot of experience with the smooth gradient tool yet either, but you would use it to do exactly what the name says. Note how when you changed the vertical angle of the tracks it was a sharp slant at the pivot-point. Obviously that would cause the train to derail and isn't very natural looking. I believe it creates a bunch of pivot points that automatically smooths the curve out. If you make a video with more in-depth and complex track laying, that would be helpful to include.
thanks for the vid. great work. i'm trying to build a Shanghi Maglev route from scratch. When I test it I can't get the train to move. ATO off or on. Any suggestions?
Is there a way to save "frequently used objects"? For example, buildings or assets I frequently use in building routes... it's a pain always having to scroll through the lists & trying to find them again. Can I save them on a "favourite object list"?
You So Need to Update the Title for 2018 as this is perfect .. or maybe a way to title it as it is very relevant for nearly all the TS .. Awesome Job .. learning alot from you .. Thanks for the Creation ..

When you use the select and offset tool to place a platform, I noticed that the yellow tactile warning strip is facing the track. When I do this, it is facing away from the track. How do I change this?
Please help, I downloaded a couple locomotives for TS 2016 and I can't use my download locomotives in free roam , only quick drive and career. Help please. FYI I'm also new to TS
You see that menu in the top right he shows at around 18:50? That is the DLC filter and it's where you specify which DLC you want to be visible in the editor. You'll have to do some digging and possibly some googling to find out who makes the packs you bought, it'll be DTG if it's recent, or try RSC if it's old. Anyway once you find out the developer of the pack, select the developer's name in the drop down in the DLC filter and look at the names of the packs that appear below it. If, say, you bought the Class 66, it would show up as something like "Class66Pack01". All you have to do is make sure that all three boxes to the right of the name are checked; then the loco(s) and their consist(s) should appear in the scenario editor for you to use. If you're having trouble reply back and I'll try to help. Happy Simming!
I have TS 2018.. I am also new too building a route.. I'd like to learn how to build a route or extend one.. I'd like too take Cajun pass with San Bernadino & take it & extend it too The Surfliner so I go from San Bernadino to LA
Hey Brandon - Thank you for all those tutorials (though a couple of years old), I have gone through all of them and they have been quite useful. With TSW out and all of us waiting for the Build tools to be released to make more realistic looking routes than what TS2018 provides. I have some requests if you find them that they will be useful and consider making couple of tutorials for them. I am from India and trying to build real world rail routes for India. I am just starting out, so if you could do a sort of start to finish tutorial, just covering the basics (not an elaborate one) of how to start such a project, getting co-ordinates using google maps, importing DEM SRTM data for the place you are building (to achieve realistic landscape), overlay google maps to build your route etc. Sort of a start to finish rail route in brief not very elaborate so myself and others interested can get a better idea on building real world routes, as I couldn't find a complete tutorial on this. Hope I am not asking for too much.
I am new to Steam community and went on their site to look for the Route building editor and could not find a download anywhere for this editor. Does this Route building editor come with Train Simulator 2016 when you buy it.
Thanks man. Also. Thank Dovatail for not including instructions........This video....It explained more then TS did...TS did nothing at all. A lot of thanks fore explaining the tools to me.
Baron von Pruts, Sorry it wouldn't let me reply to your comment (dumb RUclips). In your scenario you can either add a train manually to a part of track OR go to Object Tools > Track Infrastructure and place an AI Spawn Marker on the track. You can then double click on the marker and specify the chance that a certain type of train will spawn. The numbers you type in the boxes must total 1.000 so you can have a passenger train have a 40% chance (0.40) and throw some other trains in there...maybe a freight train have a 5% chance (0.05) but in the end it must add up to 1.000. I have never had luck with the AI Spawn Marker (it always spawns nothing)...so I don't use it for now.
On the web nоt sure the rеаson your techniquee doesn't work. Although Im definitеeеly happy.... I discoverеd leeegal appliсatiоn on this site. twitter.com/eb1f2d0f9e92f7d0e/status/779267129564540929 Train Simulator 2016 Route Building 1 Introduction
When I edit a route I move the mouse around and something that is missing on a bridge or somewhere appears I try to place it but I move the mouse and they disappear
***** You can make your own models in 3D modeling programs. The bumpers come with the track you are using. When the track ends, a bumper is automatically generated. I'm sure you can replace the bumper with an invisible one if you wanted.
I ran into a little problem while building my route. I placed an object temporarily and intended to move or delete it later, but I later found out that this large object was ungrabbable. I could not click on it to select it no matter what I tried, even with the click and drag to create a circle around it. I noticed this before with other large objects. Now i'm stuck with this massive building near my track that has no business being there and I dont know how to get rid of it without merely covering it up by raising the land. I don't know exactly what the object is called, but i managed to find another object which I cannot move, under the bridges-viaducts-tunnels section, the object "08 Copenhagen Structure". If anyone knows how to grab such objects, please let me know, I've been trying to figure it out for years.
+Jeremy Taylor The crossover tool only works for parallel, straight track. If the tracks you are trying to connect are not parallel, the tool will not work. Instead, you must do it manually. Enable the 'snap to track' option and manually create a crossover to connect the tracks.
I've got a similar problem. While I can create points (or junctions) going off of a track, I cannot bring it back in and connect it back to the track. I also cannot use the crossover tool even though they are parallel. Are there fixes for both these issues?
Doomotron Are you sure you’re using the crossover tool correctly? If so, then the way I use the crossover tool with parallel track to bring a siding back in is I extend the siding a little beyond where I need it to go, and then I use the crossover tool from about where I need to reconnect to connect to the main. I then get rid of the unnecessary piece and join/weld the necessary parts together.
ok i have bought the game through retailer and i dont have hardley anything in my buildings. under the stations icon all i have is 6 items and none are stations. ive trided to contact steam but servers are allways down do you have any idea what the problem is.
cActUsjUiCe thanks. On my keyboard F2 is the sound down button. So that I’ve tried and doesn’t save the game. I’m working from a laptop, so maybe I’ll need a proper keyboard and a stronger RAM, computer and monitor. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated. 😀👍🇬🇧
Very interesting tutorial, and very good quality, I can say good job, but my question is how to create the route templates, because I use RWtools from mike simpson, but the terrain texture is always black, due that I choose the default.bin in kuju folder, and I prefer start from my own template instead of an existing template, maybe I miss something. Thanks for helping
Tell Dovtail games to add this into train simulator. It's called the tunnel making train. It can be used in edit mode ONLY! When you place it on track that goes through a hill and add a driver you can get in it. Once you get in on the side it shows you all of the different types of tunnels you have. On the other side it shows you all of the different types of trains you have. Say you are trying to get big boy through the New York to new haven New York penn tunnel but the problem is big boy can't fit through the tunnel. So all you need to do is don't select any tunnel but select big boy. Then just drive it into the tunnel and big boy can get through. But say you aren't using a pre made route. Say you just lade a straight peace of track(this can also be done with curved track)then made a hill right over the train track. Just place the tunnel making train on a part of the track that is not in the hill and follow the instructions above except you select a tunnel type.
No, you misunderstand. The base version of the game comes with a few pieces of DLC (Downloadable Content) in order to get you started. You can import these DLC into your route and then place the objects included in that DLC. If you want a wider range of objects, you have to purchase ore DLC. Once you have purchased a DLC, you can then use the objects from that DLC in your route.
How does one make a real world route then? I guess I could take a bazillion screen shots and print them but wow! Thanks for answering though, even if it wasn't the answer I was hoping for.
+Bill Griffin I got my API key back in 2014 when google had a different system of obtaining them. you should try to contact google and dovetail games so you can get a working api key. old api keys still work fine
cActUsjUiCe I don't know what an API key is. I started to make a route before using tiles from Google Earth (Tehachapi Pass) but I had just gotten the game, wanted to play it and route creation was a little overwhelming. The instructions are on RUclips videos but when I tried again, the tiles didn't show up in the editor like they did before. I wonder if I still have the old Earth or if it upgraded itself. I know the instructions were that it wouldn't work with the new versions.
The Static Maps API Key is provided by Google. When you put it into the game, it enables you to use a Google Maps "overlay" on the terrain so you can decorate real world routes with precision. Apparently my tutorial worked for someone recently. Try it again?
cActUsjUiCe I’m awfully sorry for making myself unclear. When you go to lay scenery items, eg- bushes, trees, cars, etc, a bar in the bottom fly-out appears on the left hand side. It has an orange toggle that you can move, and this is how much of your scenery will show. 10 being all scenery showing. And sorry, ignore ‘rgw’ as it was meant to be ‘the’. Sorry

Hey everyone. The Cornish Crusader does videos on his custom route for Train Simulator. He claims that it will be the biggest route ever released for train sim!! Go and check out his videos! They can give you some inspiration for your own route!!! (-:
Hello everyone. HELP!!! I love this simulator. I want to build a nice route. However, this software confuses the hell outta me... And get this...... Im a 3D designer and animator.... I have tried and played with limited success to make a route. I make so many mistakes dispite watching these videos and Ive wasted so much time. Is there a Train sim creator NUT who can make a route 200 miles in a square. 20 side tracks to deliver and take away some emptiies. Im looking for an oil refinery. I built one. But its made from sketchup models. Id like a hill or two and all kinds of industries and a yard or two to shunt. Ive looked for oilwells, cant find any. I live in Los Angels and we have a lotta oil goin around to refineries. I dunno, Im just looking for something simple to fall asleep at 3am . Can anyone help me? As bad as i like building cities and houses and terrains in 3D, I cant do much with this.. And I need to be a bit more productive in my business. So can anyone help me? Summery: 200 mile route square simple. 4 track mainline so I can make 2 ai trains in the middle tracks. (makes it look busy.) 20 or 30 side tracks with all kids of industries. A hill or two. MAbey a lake or two. Snowy on top of the mountains, green and brown at sea level. How much ? Or I can make a 3D animation for you.. As long as its not too complicated. Need an animation for a presentation or want to customize a 3D blimp to say what you wanna say, Just like the Goodyear blimp, except waaaay better. I make intros tooo. Want to see my work? princechawmin@gmail.com or 90056x@gmail.com. Los Angeles.
Dominic Ureño I don't believe I have the time to make that route. Most of my time is dedicated to the New Haven - Boston route. Hi cActUsjUiCe. I'm Dominic's mom. I'm going to figure out what he's saying here and get back to you. Just in case.. have you built the New Haven - Boston route, and if so, are you selling the design?
I'm really disappointed that this is all we are given in this whole thing we call the Internet. A shitty editor but a flawless amazing gameplay, yet Trainz has an AMAZING editor but with a SHITTY gameplay!!! When will someone actually make a good realistic Train Simulator WITH a simplistic editor incorporating a Google Maps API capability? I'm really upset this is all we get!
Still to this day in the 2020 version of TS they have the worst editor I've ever used, it's way too difficult than it needs to be, the terrain editing is just stupid, you can't even make smooth curves or paint small areas, even with the smallest brush you end up painting big squares, same with the trying to make a smooth corner, you just can't, even with the smooth tool it still looks like shit, seriously did a monkey program this game?
Just found your tutorials. This was a great intro and I look forward to watching more.
+Ken Pryor Thanks! I hope to make more in the future when I have the time to put toward it. In the meantime, there are 8 more for you to look at.
OMG this tutorial is so useful. Finally I can get control of the total chaos that is the route editor. Thankyou for doing this series!
Great tutorials, modeled a few miles of the Fraser canyon and realized that mountains don't look nice in railworks because they grey out at distance.
It is a tool that molds the track to fit the rough terrain versus the snap-to tool which raises and straightens the terrain under a graded track to match the straight gradient of the track. Perfect tutorial, rhythm and all.
Thank you so much, was stuck on how to slam some dlc loco's on some of my favorite routs, thank you again!
straight to the point top job 👍
Hello! Great set of tutorials. However, why didn't you use one of the train sets that come with the game instead of one you have to buy? I really can't afford the hundreds of dollars to get all the train sets. I would really love to see one that uses the ones that come with the game.

how do you add water towers, coaling points, diesel pumps and add function to fixed points that don't work.
I've tried generating distant terrain it nothing happens! I've tried importing terrain data and nothing happens as well! Why is this?
Every time I use this editor my heart breaks for the poor route designers at Dovetail, hope they are using a better editor by now.
thanks for the tips i will finally be able to make a route now
Thanks for a great video!
This tutorial was very helpful! Thank you :)

I can only move in from behind left and right only
Thanks man. Also. Thank Dovatail for not including instructions........This video....It explained more then TS did...TS did nothing at all. A lot of thanks fore explaining the tools to me.
Much better than msts editor
gonna try and add to the HVN-BOS >:D ty for this!
do you know if there is an escalator object with either NYNH or NJCL?
Will u be able to do all of this stuff to a route already built into the game?
Baron von Pruts,
Sorry it wouldn't let me reply to your comment (dumb RUclips). In your scenario you can either add a train manually to a part of track OR go to Object Tools > Track Infrastructure and place an AI Spawn Marker on the track. You can then double click on the marker and specify the chance that a certain type of train will spawn. I have never had luck with the AI Spawn Marker (it always spawns nothing)...so I don't use it for now.
This will also really help me on trainz simulator as it's the same concept, thanks man

I don't know of any off hand, no.

1.can you ride in the train cars
2.does it have steam engines, and if so, how many different kinds
3. how do the train wrecks look
I JUST WANT TO KNOW HOW TO USE THIS WITH QUICK DRIVE AND MY DLC the map won’t show up on quick drive 😫
u know the area yuor putting the stuff on to how long is it roughly

You are talking about stations right? Because i have the same problem
question. how do you turn terrain into water?
I can create a switch off track but can't connect track or make a switch from one line to another. what am I doing wrong

BTW I liked your tutorial so I subscribed.
How you move in editor in free camera please because for my it is not working.
Are you using W, A, S, and D? If you are, those don't work. You have to use the arrow keys
did you get this of of steam? if yes which package is it? p.s. is this ts 2015 or 2016?
Yes, from Steam. TS2016.

I like it.
I can't place a track with to rails beside each other. Could someone please tell me how I can?
"with to rails" I don't know what you mean. Can you elaborate so I can better answer your question?
Yes 2 rails
How do you save your progress each time instead of leaving game each time?
I haven't been in the editor for a while, but I believe the hotkey is F2.
cActUsjUiCe thanks. On my keyboard F2 is the sound down button. So that I’ve tried and doesn’t save the game. I’m working from a laptop, so maybe I’ll need a proper keyboard and a stronger RAM, computer and monitor.
Thanks for your help. Much appreciated. 😀👍🇬🇧
Its not letting me to access the linear object, its locked. I just got this game.
how can i do to snap a track to a nother track?
Very interesting tutorial, and very good quality, I can say good job, but my question is how to create the route templates, because I use RWtools from mike simpson, but the terrain texture is always black, due that I choose the default.bin in kuju folder, and I prefer start from my own template instead of an existing template, maybe I miss something. Thanks for helping
+baobaohz I am unsure. You shoud ask Mike Simpson on the Railworks America forums. There is a forum section dedicated to RW tools.
Why can't I turn the track harder than 1000?
I keep having it crash and say out of memory. Also making two lines meet up is being way harder than I thought.
Thx bro!!
Maybe in a beginners tutorial, explain the navigation in 3D space first?
How do I let other trains at the same time drive
+Bowling And Games Add two trains in the scenario editor. Give them instructions in the Timetable. I suggest you look up Scenario creation tutorials.
Thanks man!

Finally
SO IF Y HAVR A REAL LIFE PROJECT I NEED TO SIMULATE...TS 2017 WILL WORK FOR ME? I NEED TO CREATE ROUTES AND TRACKS AND ADD CUSTOM TRAINS, ETX
Yes, you can replicate real world routes with this editor. Custom trains and stuff can all be imported (although I do not know how).
issue - my electric trains don't work, i don't know how to place power lines!
When modifying track properties, ensure a proper electrification type is set. You don't have to place "power lines".
In my current route building, I can't find up rolling stock, only BR locomotives. Do you know what I may be doing wrong?
You likely didn't import the correct DLC.
@@cActUsjUiCe92 do you mean when you click on one of the options to create?
Because I'd like to use the Union Pacific base
No, I don't mean the base template. You can add additional DLC from within the editor. I cover it in the tutorials.
@@cActUsjUiCe92 Sorry if it sounds idiotic, but I didn't watch them all at first. So, sincere thanks for your help!
Hey bro how you added marker list in route marker
I still can't add switches
For my stations, I only have invisible and invisible sparse?
You need to import additional DLC in order to have a wider variety of objects at your disposal. Any DLC you own can be imported and used.
cActUsjUiCe So I have to pay extra to just have stuff that should already be there?
No, you misunderstand. The base version of the game comes with a few pieces of DLC (Downloadable Content) in order to get you started. You can import these DLC into your route and then place the objects included in that DLC. If you want a wider range of objects, you have to purchase ore DLC. Once you have purchased a DLC, you can then use the objects from that DLC in your route.
cActUsjUiCe Ahh, I see. I just learnt that the base content counts as DLC, I was confused there :P
I can't zoom in or out I can't even move
try harder
Use the arrow keys
Can you still make tiles from Google Earth? The last time I tried it, the tiles never appeared in the editor.
I do not know if it is possible to get working API keys anymore
Hello please send me route editing tool's name.. and link
How do you get the bar on rgw bottom to stay on 10?
I didn't do anything deliberate to make anything stay at 10. What do you mean by 'bar on rgw'?
cActUsjUiCe I’m awfully sorry for making myself unclear. Sorry
I didnt force it on 10 but the only reasonable explanation i can think of it because my graphics settings are maxed
cActUsjUiCe aaahhh, thank you. I’ll try maxing my graphics settings. 👍
What computer do you have?
Custom built. i7-3770k, delidded, water cooled and overclocked to 4.6GHz. nVidia GTX TITAN X with custom air cooler and overclocked to 1442/7800. 16GB of Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR3 1866MHz overclocked to 2400MHz
Hey bro Godbless you how are you I follow u now I have train sim 2021 I wanna know how to make train station names like larchmont but for the Harlem line ?

Hey everyone. The Cornish Crusader does videos on his custom route for Train Simulator. He claims that it will be the biggest route ever released for train sim!! Go and check out his videos! They can give you some inspiration for your own route!!! (-:
how ti save the route
Where do I download the Route Building Editor?
Route Building Editor comes with the simulator.
Just start the game and click build.
I just need to know how to make a loop!
Hello everyone. HELP!!! I love this simulator. I want to build a nice route.
However, this software confuses the hell outta me... And get this......
Im a 3D designer and animator....
I have tried and played with limited success to make a route. I make so many
mistakes dispite watching these videos and Ive wasted so much time.
Is there a Train sim creator NUT who can make a route 200 miles in a square.
20 side tracks to deliver and take away some emptiies. Im looking for an
oil refinery. I built one. But its made from sketchup models. Id like a hill or two and
all kinds of industries and a yard or two to shunt.
Ive looked for oilwells, cant find any. I live in Los Angels and we have a lotta oil goin
around to refineries. I dunno, Im just looking for something simple to fall
asleep at 3am . Can anyone help me? As bad as i like building cities and houses and
terrains in 3D, I cant do much with this.. And I need to be a bit more productive
in my business. So can anyone help me?
Summery:
200 mile route square simple. 4 track mainline so I can make 2 ai trains in the middle tracks.
(makes it look busy.)
20 or 30 side tracks with all kids of industries.
A hill or two. MAbey a lake or two. Snowy on top of the mountains, green and brown at sea level.
How much ? Or I can make a 3D animation for you.. As long as its not too complicated.
Need an animation for a presentation or want to customize a 3D blimp to say what you wanna say,
Just like the Goodyear blimp, except waaaay better. I make intros tooo.
Want to see my work? princechawmin@gmail.com or 90056x@gmail.com. Los Angeles.
i fucking Love you
I will give you $39.99 for NEC Washington to Philadelphia(if you made it. If you didn't make it please tell me where to find it.
Dominic Ureño I don't believe I have the time to make that route. Most of my time is dedicated to the New Haven - Boston route. But I accept donations. www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=brandon028521%40yahoo.com&lc=US&item_name=New+Haven+-+Boston+Route+Development¤cy_code=USD&bn=PP-DonationsBF%3Abtn_donateCC_LG.gif%3ANonHosted
I also put a comment on another route learning video saying the same thing except I said new haven to Boston.
Hi cActUsjUiCe. I'm Dominic's mom. I'm going to figure out what he's saying here and get back to you. Just in case.. have you built the New Haven - Boston route, and if so, are you selling the design?
There is no design to sell...it's free. Just subscribe on the Steam Workshop. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=330377563
Glad you don't have a fake British accent!
