This is one of the hardest video games of the time it was made and the player is making it look easy. Unbelievable how good he is at this game. It reminds me of watching professional pool players (any pro game, really) and how they make pool look so easy and when YOU try it nothing seems to work:)
WOW I used to play this game at my cousins house when I was like 4 or 5, that was 25 years ago! I never knew what the name was untill now! Nostalgia overload! lol
I used to cut out of high school back in '84 to play this game... I was infatuated with it. lol I just realized that the ropes he's jumping back and forth on at 3:30 are actually keyboard graphics, nonetheless it was an amazing game.
This was the first game I played when I was a kid. Played it for hours on my grandfathers computer. I would stay up after they went to bed playing it. Good memories. The guy playing this is killing it too 😆.
In the bonus part, you will not be able to move any more after some time. Instead, you will just be pulled to one of the slides and get to the next level. The game actually plays in a pyramid consisting of 9 floors (10 floors including the title screen). In Level 1, it is dark on the lowest floor only, in Level 2, on the two lowest floors, etc. In Level 9, it's dark on all floors. In the first levels, there are four torches to make the dark screens go bright. In Level 9, no torches can be found.
Man, I remember how my bro was good in this game. I think he just remembered all the stages, cuz even in complete darkness he never missed a point, just like this guy.
Impressive! This was one of my favorite games. I had a Commdore 64, but I had this game only for the Atari 5200 and I played this game *a lot* in the mid 80s. I never got as high as level 9. :-) Actually, I seem to remember it getting more difficult more quickly on the 5200. I remember by level 4 or level 5 that there were a lot more monsters.
This game was great, and the C-64 version was probably my favorite of the 8-bit versions. This, and the first two Pitfall games were groundbreaking in paving the way for adventure games that became a staple during the NES era. I was nowhere near as good as this guy though, impressive playthrough.
"I loved it when I died and my leg would twitch. Classic." This part made my day. By far the best video game death at that time. Nothing else came close.
"I created the original on the Atari when I was 15 years old, which took six to seven months. Shortly after, I was approached by Parker Brothers, who wanted to port it to all of the 8-bit systems. The C64 version was easily the most faithful as they did a great job working with my original source code. I've always had a soft spot for the C64, and, as a developer, I remember being very excited to work on it; 64K RAM was awesome, and the full-colour hardware sprites and audio were a big innovation." -- Robert Jaeger, original designer
I miss these games. This and Wizard. Don't get me wrong, I love the cinematic plots of modern games but there was something fun and innocent about just having fun without cutscenes or franchises creating big narratives
Man, when the lights went out and he still sped through it like it was nothing, I was like "Holy shit!" Obviously this guy has played this once or twice or 50 times! JW3HH
Got about 100 discs with games on them when we bought our Commodore, often no description, so digging through them and trying & figuring out the games how they worked was just a big part of it. Not sure I could get this one to run, think I had different versions of it and one worked.
OMG ! The Adam ! Playing Buck Rogers Planet of Zoom was great but took forever to load with that cassette loader, lol. And I made some school reports with that noisy AF, slow AF daisy-wheel printer ("CLACK CLACK CLACKCLACKCLACK..CLACK ! lol).
There was a glich in level 1(or any levels before 7) that would made you jump from 1 to 7) The secret was to remember the game, it was always the same levels, just an increase of monsters... Still was really hard... :-) my best game when I was a kid, had to remember everything.. died soooo many times... could play my eyes closed since I new all the move by hard... but from level 8 was hard like hell...
No. Once you get to level 9, the torch is no longer available so it becomes more difficult. After that it's just level 9 over and over until you run out of lives.
Is there a more basic/earlier version of this game? I’ve been looking for a game that had some keys like thus one, and had a little guy like this one as well, but was monochromatic and not even close to being this sophisticated. It was most like a very basic version without many obstacles. My sister and I used to play it in my dad’s computer, in thinking it was 1989-1991? It was in the same style as digger, alley cat and Sokoban. Any ideas?
This game lives in my darkest nightmares. I remember the hours I would spend wandering around wondering WTF I was supposed to be doing. Good times nevertheless. How in the hell did you navigate those dark rooms so effortlessly? I spent days trying to memorize patterns and steps and would always fall to my doom.
Now do it on NTSC. :) and without tool assistance. (i was able to beat level 9 back i the day. there are three main routes through the game. for level 1, you learn route 1. for level 2 you learn route 2. eventually a new path opens up when getting the torch in route 2 that lets you cut over to route 1. awesome game. And yes, i did beat level 9 once.
you know when i seen this as a kid watching my bro play it, it looked like nothing more than repeat of the last level when he cleared a level. Now I understand its not the same level lol
This is one of those games where the programming was so bad control wise, and the C64's inability to move while jumping was such BS- but the game is addictive and this superhuman player makes it look easy...
Amazingly played. There's a couple things I don't get though - why doesn't he pick up all the gold in the "bonus" part, but rather jump all the way down back to the beginning? And secondly why does the lights go out when starting over again? Is it some torture the game makers put in - expecting players to put all the screens into memory and be able to jump and navigate while being blind? In my opinion the C64 version is the ultimate version of this game - even though I liked the coco version 2
@modder1975 Hai proprio ragione, mi ricordavo il gioco ma non il titolo. Ti ricordi per caso un gioco che italiano era chiamato "over the top". Era su una di quelle cassette da edicola, non c'entrava nulla col film di stallone.
My dad never bought us Nintendo when we were kids, instead he bought an Apple computer. We must have had at least 100 games and I KNOW if we had Nintendo we would have had next to none...so we were lucky. This was one of our fave games! PREPARE YOURSELF! Hahaha!
I haven't played this game in nearly 30 years. The sounds nearly made my head explode from nostalgia.

I have played it many many times.
I've finished it at 9 level and make 395000 score points.
One of the best ever game in history

some skills! the greatest game on commodore 64! had so much fun with it back in the days :) thanks for posting
Man, I remember how my bro was good in this game. I think he just remembered all the stages, cuz even in complete darkness he never missed a point, just like this guy.
I used to be able to get through the whole level when you began in the dark and had to memorize every move for about 50 screens. Loved this game.
it was my favorite game on c64 back in the 80s those were the days
awww its been 20 years since I played it the last time.
but I can remember it as if it was yesterday...
J'aime ce jeu !!!
one of the first games I used to play on my atari 800 xl , and still in my heart ...
Probably the best action game for C-64.
C128 Nostalgia

My mate had this at his house.
I agree with others who have commented. It was pretty hard.
Still remember that, "Do do do do do" sound. I loved it when I died and my leg would twitch. Classic.
"I loved it when I died and my leg would twitch. Classic." This part made my day. By far the best video game death at that time. Nothing else came close.
It used to make my sphincter tingle at every do-do-do-do. lol
Great playing!
Oh my god, the sounds… take me right back!

This brings me back to a simple time of being a child and not having to do much but school
I remember those dark levels. You play them with ease.
I remember having trouble with running dos I was like 5-6at the time my brother always had to help me. The good old days. 😀😀😀
holy shiiit my first c64 game EVER, THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANKS FOR SHARING
the best runer ever , this game is absolutely insane
I wish I could play like him!
I loved this game
Every now and then I get that, "Do do do DO do" sound in my head.
lol, same here. Haven't played the game in like 30 years, but somehow it got lodged in my brain.
Did you know that the "Do do do DO do" sound is a snippet from a Spanish/Mexican song called "La Cucaracha"?
Mind blown. I never realized that! Great stuff, thanks!
Yeah it's a real unique feature and catchy
really fun and amazing game. I've played it so much times. in italy it was called 'Predator'
You are flying through it like a boss!!!
@UrielDagda it is funny, though, how you remember every screen and go "aaah, oooh, I remember that" 30 years after the game was brand new. :)
one of the hardest games ever made for c64.

Used to play this after school on my Adam computer.
OMG ! The Adam ! Playing Buck Rogers Planet of Zoom was great but took forever to load with that cassette loader, lol. And I made some school reports with that noisy AF, slow AF daisy-wheel printer ("CLACK CLACK CLACKCLACKCLACK..CLACK ! lol).
This is how John Wick would play montezuma's revenge
some time in the late 1990's there was a sequal to this game called "Montezuma's return"
jajjajaj la cucaracha ♪♫ ♥
that was more intense than watching Spelunker runs!
There was a glich in level 1(or any levels before 7) that would made you jump from 1 to 7)

my best game when I was a kid, had to remember everything.. died soooo many times... could play my eyes closed since I new all the move by hard... but from level 8 was hard like hell...
Amazing...
Remember this game. Many time, 14" TV screen, commodore 64...
Moje dzieci ostatnio w to grały ale "grafika je nie zachwyciła" :)
Played this 37 years ago on an Atari 400/800 XL along with Bruce Lee.
MetalJesusRocks doesn’t know nothing about games on the Commodore 64. He says this is a hidden gem.
I used to be able to play this infinitely.. I'd never be able to remember all the stuff now. :)
Holy Shit! You are the man!
Que buen recuerdo.
Long long nights I'd played this game on my C 128 D in the mideighties .
Really good times 😢
This game is so fun I never new there was this many levels. 3 Level I see you on level 9 wow you are the best in the world at this game
dooby dooby doo dee doop
Does the game have an ending?
I played and made it very far, but never was able to finish it as I thought it was some kind of loop.
No. Once you get to level 9, the torch is no longer available so it becomes more difficult. After that it's just level 9 over and over until you run out of lives.
What a nostaļģija 👌👌🧡
Que genio !
I remember I had this in the 80's for the Commodore 64 and it wasn't this easy, lol
Some screens ARE dark unless/until you pick up the torch.

I hope someone can help me out. Did c64 ever have a game similar to this? Where you collect artifacts and return them to the surface?
ruclips.net/video/fVBWoQjpAs4/видео.html (the first game that comes to mind....)
Talisman?

Comment peut on télécharger ce jeu svp? Je suis allée sur le lien mais je ne comprends pas

Was Castle Excellent inspired on this?
jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Si chiamava Head Over Heels, c'e' un video su yotube ma non mi lascia postare il link
Excellent playing! wow this game is buggy... but did it really matter back then..?
This is one of those games where the programming was so bad control wise, and the C64's inability to move while jumping was such BS- but the game is addictive and this superhuman player makes it look easy...
This is dark souls of the 1980's ;)
I have this on //C...

yes, the hardest game for reinforcement learning

Ricordo qualcosa di simile, che era anche uno dei primi tentativi 3d. C'erano anche delle mummie, ma non so se è questo che dici.
