A little tidbit missing from your story. In summer of '94, before they signed to Capricorn, Vince gave in to pressure from his girlfriend and left the band for a couple months. He moved back to Seattle. They were playing a show at the Blackwater Cafe in Stockton and told the crowd that they needed a new trumpet player. A friend of mine was at the show and gave me their number. I had just graduated from UOP conservatory. I went up and auditioned and got the gig. So I toured with them August through November 1994 in support of Motorcade. Then they got the call from Capricorn and John really wanted his best bud Vince back. So he came back and I was out. My 15 minutes of almost fame. I played probably 30 shows or so with them, Seattle to El Paso, and a bunch in Sac and the bay area.

Cake was the very first concert I ever went to over 18 years ago. Every member played to perfection. They weren't even going off a setlist. After each song was over whoever yelled one of their songs the loudest they'd just start playing that one next. I still remember how awesome it was to have the bass rattle the entire building. There's only 2 bands I've ever seen live that's played as tight and as clean as the original recording and that'd be Cake and Tool. Cake definitely deserves more recognition.
I've seen Cake a bunch of times. The best time was at The Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in Hampton Beach, NH. Saw Cake three times in one day at SXSW. They were playing at three different industry parties. Kinda crazy considering how popular they were at the time.
Every single one of my Cake CDs wound up with ashes on it from cigarettes. Not as an ashtray, just as a casualty of the time. I can't think of anything more 90s for me.
I hadn't thought about Cake in decades - then I rewatched Soprano's earlier this year and "Frank Sinatra" grabbed me right away. I learned a decent acoustic version of it and have enjoyed listening to their stuff again, what a great encapsulation of 90's alternative.
You know how the band you like never plays that one song you love in concert? Well, the second time I saw Cake, I waited too long to get a beer after the opener had left the stage. If I went to get a beer, I was in danger of missing Cake coming out. I decided to get a beer anyway as they would probably open with something off the radio or MTV. Standing there, third person in line, and I heard the crowd start cheering. Then I heard Stick Shifts and Safety Belts echoing out. That moment made me realize I loved Cake.
My biggest influence on the vibra slap. Have you noticed in the video for I Will Survive the protagonist from the video for The Distance runs by on camera? You also are unlikely to hear a white boy groove as hard as Sick of You. Cake yesterday.Cake today.Cake forever!
My favorite Cake show was when McCrea came out and said at the start "Hello. We are Cake and we are opening for Cake." They played for an hour took a break and came back out and played for an hour and a half. Those coming in late missed a great show.
@Smith-wk6pb I actually made the comment before I got to the end and they did not actually mention the glory of Gaynor song until almost the end of the video. so I kind of jumped the gun but I think you're just nitpicking because you like the nitpick I did listen I actually really like cake a lot I have like three of their albums going to set or actually two. I'm voice texting I haven't listened to them in years but their friend song I really love short skirt long jacket, when I need to be hyped of course I have to listen to the distance. Frank Sinatra never there I can go on and on I love cake I don't listen to cake all the time but they're there when I need them. so I won't even be my usual asshole self and post a whole bunch of insults to you I'll let this one slide.... oh and I forgot one of the most kick ass covers of all time which to me I like listening to it more than I like the original, war pigs. matter of fact I think I feel like I need to listen to it right now
To me, they are like R.E.M. in that they have their own sound that isn't anything like anyone else. They don't play rock songs or funk songs or ska songs. They play Cake songs. Period. And the songs are so good. For a long time, "Going the Distance" was like my version of Cartman's relationship with "Sailing Away". I couldn't even think about it without the whole song just kind of spooling out in my mind. But I think my fave is "Building a Religion". It really has this cult-like vibe with a neo-primitive sensibility. I only have to hear that opening riff and suddenly the song has my full attention and every time the band shouts "Duuude!" I am right there with them. As someone raised without religion, it has a strangely strong effect on me. The wacky morning DJ says democracy's a joke!
I met the lead singer once in Nashville. Drove him to the airport. He was cool and explained how little money Spotify pays artists and how the record deals just arent big anymore. And playing live is your sole moneymaker anymore besides selling the songs for commercials or soundtracks.
One of my favorite bands. I saw them live a couple years ago and they were pretty low-energy. At the time it felt a bit like burnout but i enjoyed it none the less. To find out that they in fact find the concert circuit draining and difficult AND that a toned-down musical tone is something they aspire for… that honestly brings a better light to the memory.
10:03 to this day, since buying the album in ‘96, I listen to I Will Survive at least once a week. It’s an ode to a beautiful baseline. It’s pure magic
I saw Cake in my home town in Idaho about 8 years ago. What a great show. John was a humble and normal dude. He was always asking the crowd questions and bringing up topics that were down to earth and pretty funny. At the time he was living just east of us in Montana.
I’ve seen cake five different times in Nashville. They’re definitely one of the most fun bands I’ve ever seen live. They really like to get the crowd involved and always sounded great live.
During the early 2000's, Cake did an impromptu tour where they played at highway rest stops. Really anywhere that they could plug up a couple of amps. It was DIY and awesome!
I saw them get booed off the stage at Edgefest in Barrie, Ontario in 2001. They were slotted to play in between Sevendust and Default… they were doomed after the great show Sevendust put on… they played a couple of songs and people from the crowd were bewildered at the oddity of this band Cake (playing after Sevendust) and began booing and throwing the odd water bottle at the band… Mccrea yelled at the crowd “if you boo and throw 1 more bottle we’re leaving”….. Cue the bottles from everyone in the crowd being thrown at them - Mccrea flipped the crowd said “F you” and the band left the stage… Which was too bad because both my friend and I wanted to see them! I understand though - WOW - that was A LOT OF FLYING WATER BOTTLES!!!
Yup.That was 2002 actually. I worked with The Edge at the time. I remember thinking how bizarre the placement of where Cake was in the schedule. They would have been way better recieved at the beginning with the lighter bands. As bad as I felt for them, it was pretty funny when everyone chucked their bottles in unison after his empty threat. hahaha (You have a great memory by the way) .. I wish I could find a clip of it on here but it doesn't seem to be anywhere.
@ I was waiting for someone to comment who was there.. I knew it had to be 2001/2002 based on the group of people I attended that concert with… Yeah, it was sad to see it happen.
@@nathanmailhot6923 look them up. There's a good reason cake shouldn't have gone after Sevendust. They always put on a great show. They probably would have been pretty disappointed with the fan reaction to Cake too. They're pretty down to earth. That's fully on the promoter.
Cake in many ways, was the sound of what Kurt Cobain spoke, not what he played, it was like the sarcastic yet loving hug he never got to feel. His floating ghost commenting on his now dead useless body. Cake represented the core missing ingredient of the grunge movement, humor and humility. Grunge was always bound to be the angry miserable cousin of hair metal. Success used to kill it self, before it could enjoy the fruits of its labor (Dave Mustaine warned grunge, don't do heroin; nearly all its casualties are narcotic related)
My mom passed in June and I'm tearing up right now because she would sing "The Distance" at the most random times, or I would, and we would just chime in with each other. Good memory.
Absolutely love Cake and was lucky enough to see them here in Sydney in the late 90s. They're my go to band for karaoke ! Mr True Stories, any chance we could get an episode on Ben Folds Five ?
I've had One Angry Gnome on repeat in my head for the last month. Just one section, a it of the verse before it hits the chorus. I keep meaning to play the whole song on youtube so hopefully my brain will stop the ongoing repeat but then I forget so it continues. Might do it now, thx for the reminder! 😂😊
Cake has been one of my favorite bands since I was 14 and found a copy of "Prolonging the Magic" in a basket of random stuff from my moved-out older sister's room. I finally got to see them live in Cedar Rapids in May of this year.
@TimmyCherry the Beat and Tower Records, what a time to be living in Sacramento. I would go to the Beat, drop a couple hundred and then go to Hamburger Mary's across the street. God I miss that.
I think that they approach each of their covers in a unique way that's almost always well suited to that particular song. Their version of songs like I Will Survive and Perhaps,Perhaps,Perhaps are so different from the originals and therefore work so well. But with songs like Ruby,Don't Take Your Love Into Town and Guitar Man they make subtle little tweaks at the most. And somehow manage to make those covers sound way better than the originals anyway.
Comfort Eagle is one of the top 5 songs on my life's playlist. I have a video of my two kiddos, probably 4 and 9 years old, dancing around in my workshop to it, for the whole song, singing along here and there, just having a ball.
Love to hear your take on Metal Church. They were a band with huge potential and talent and were beset with bad luck and tragedies. Pretty crazy stuff.
It's probably the tightest live show I ever saw. They're a really amazing band to see live. Boston 90s at the half shell. I saw a lot of good bands there and they were free.
I went to Sacramento city junior college at the same time as Greg Brown and we had several mutual friends. He taught me how to play space oddity by Bowie one day when I stopped him while he was walking by at sac city. I knew he was a Bowie nut and I’d been wanting to learn that song. He was very cool and gladly stopped and showed me how to play it. I saw Cake play at Sacramento state college in mid 90s as well. I also saw Saturdays child once. They did an amazing cover of Hurdy Gurdy man.
Cake jams! So many good, feel good (and bad good) tunes. They seem like they'd still fit in the modern music circuit these days. But I was 14 or so when they hit the radio. They have lots of cool tunes.
Cake was one of those bands i discovered with some friends in middle school in the late 00s. Theyve always been one of the most unique bands ive heard. Sick video dude
People remember the 90s as the era of grunge, but it was dead by 1995. More diverse artists like Beck, Cake, Fun Lovin’ Criminals & Geggy Tah took over modern rock radio.
I got to hang with them backstage, at Universal Amphitheater, back in 2004. They were super cool. They actually talk to me and friends. I told them they were my favorite band. I used to workout to their music, because it had a way of getting me pumped, and then keeping me going. They were the second nicest band I've met, next to Tesla.
I've been one of the biggest fans of the band since before they got big. I used to see them in local Sacramento clubs, and was fortunate enough to be an early adopter and play them on radio stations in Northern California when they finally hit. But I'll tell you, some of us are just sick of getting an earful of preaching about politics. So I still listen to their music, but I just don't listen to their politics and I think a lot of people got sick of it. It would probably help if they release some new material as well.
I saw CAKE at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago in 2002 on The Unlimited Sunshine tour. The Flaming Lips were the opening act and half the audience cleared out when their set was over! I don't listen to CAKE that often anymore but when I do, I remember how much I love them and what a great band they were. They had great catchy tunes and really sardonic lyrics. No other band sounds like them. While The Flaming Lips went on to become afterthoughts to the ridiculous circus that their live shows became, I would gladly go to a CAKE show again in a heartbeat!
I love the song and accompanying video, "Love You Madly", where trumpeter Vince DiFiore and then drummer Pete McNeal have a cook-off to judges Jeff Smith, Phillis Diller, and Rick James (RIP to all three ): There's also a backstory to Pete that is very dark. I'm a little surprised there was absolutely no mention in this video. Perhaps it's just another sordid rock and roll tale people would rather forget...
I still have a Short skirt to go with my Looooong Jacket...Na na na nana. Love and miss Cake! Sad Drummer almost killed the band in 2009. Peter McNeal is where he belongs now.
I definitely think the anti grunge sentiment was a breath of fresh air at the time. lol, they were alternative alternative 😅. Contrasting the ubiquitous, self destructive depression music with something very different. I had a match, but she had a lighter…
They are interesting, me and my son-in-law both still listen to them. The lead singer has strong opinions about a lot of things and I think he has been ostracized a bit for that, which is too bad (our younger society is way too into a censorship sort of approach to ideas).
@@MrERLoner Never heard of any of those bands. I played in a band in the mid-90's from FAR NorCal (i.e. the true northern valley), and we played with a SacTown band called Simon Feck a few times. One of the guys in that band now runs the Torch Club in Sactown.
Core memory: John came into the restaurant I cooked at while we were blasting his music in the prep kitchen. He def think heard it. I was rocking out, looked up (open kitchen) and there he was. He came in often and was always cool.
Had the displeasure of seeing cake twice, at two different festivals. They are just awful. I mean, maybe the band itself is ok, but all I remember about them is just how shitty their frontman is. He has one hell of an ego for a guy that talk sings.
They headlined alongside Primus at All Good Festival in 2015, and both bands got kinda politically preachy during their sets, spreading a general sense of malaise throughout the audience… like… le sigh…

I love Cake. We used to play them while tripping to keep from going dark. Saved us from a lot of bad trips.
Gonna have to remember that next time I shroom
That would ruin my night fr
You need a better source of LSD
yeah, i would never listen to Cake tripping. not sure what you normally listen to.
Cool story bro
You know how the band you like never plays that one song you love in concert? Well, the second time I saw Cake, I waited too long to get a beer after the opener had left the stage. If I went to get a beer, I was in danger of missing Cake coming out. I decided to get a beer anyway as they would probably open with something off the radio or MTV. Standing there, third person in line, and I heard the crowd start cheering. Then I heard Stick Shifts and Safety Belts echoing out. That moment made me realize I loved Cake.
A lot of good cars are Japanese
But when I’m driving far I need my baby next to me
I love that song so damn much
Great song. A few years back, I did a cover of stick shifts as a sad song cuz that was the Cake thing to do goddammit.
Rip goofy fun rock 1995-2001
A faintly glimmering radio station...
They're back, baby!
They released Sinking Ship during the 45th POTUS administration.....they are still here 🗿👽🗿👽🗿
Rest in piss, goofy rockers.
Check out 'Cheekface' , thank me later
Not many bands can cover a Black Sabbath song and a Barry White song with style. A Legendary Band worthy of more props.
you forgot about the Gloria Gaynor song, I will survive which is a gay anthem I think, cake made it cool
@@rellis881And Miley Cyrus made it cringe... Oh wait, that song isn't a cover 😂🎉
@lowlink534 lol
@@rellis881that was talked about in the video or can't you hear or listen.
One of the best live bands in Sacramento
I always loved seeing Cake live
They sounded great too
10:03 to this day, since buying the album in ‘96, I listen to I Will Survive at least once a week. It’s an ode to a beautiful baseline. It’s pure magic
I used to listen to Fashion Nugget when I was a band nerd. The late nineteen hundreds were a different time.
My kiddo is in color guard… I’ve seen the Distance in two different halftime shows this year.
The last time we were free
The best times.
Loved this band. The lead singer actually repaired my iPhone at the Apple Genius Bar once.
Are you for real?!
Yeah they were awesome at music and at small device repair too.
🤣😂👍🏻✌🏼
Damn that's a pretty cool catch
that’s pretty cool. I met him at a bar once too, damn he makes a really good margarita. I had to leave him a good tip
Short skirt and long jacket described a lot of people we knew in the 90s.
I only heard that song because my older brother bootlegged it on Napster 😂
Also their best song 🎉
COMFORT EAGLE, too !!
You can meet at his location but you better come with cash
During the early 2000's, Cake did an impromptu tour where they played at highway rest stops. Really anywhere that they could plug up a couple of amps. It was DIY and awesome!
That's so rad.
I love Cake so much, I have been listening to a ton of the old albums this year
I saw them get booed off the stage at Edgefest in Barrie, Ontario in 2001. Cue the bottles from everyone in the crowd being thrown at them - Mccrea flipped the crowd said “F you” and the band left the stage…
Which was too bad because both my friend and I wanted to see them! I understand though - WOW - that was A LOT OF FLYING WATER BOTTLES!!!
Hilarious, I've never even heard of Sevendust...
Saw them live last month in San Diego. They are still great.
Stay tuned!!! Coming very soon! Thanks for the suggestion
Cake has been one of my favorite bands since I was 14 and found a copy of "Prolonging the Magic" in a basket of random stuff from my moved-out older sister's room. I finally got to see them live in Cedar Rapids in May of this year.
Nice one, I'm from Sacramento and remember seeing them at the now defunct cattle club
Thanks
Same. CD release party for.Motorcade.
The Cattle Club! Pretty much every band that got big in the early/mid '90s played that little place.
Love your videos and as a lifelong resident of Sacramento, thank you for mentioning the Beat record store. That brought a tear to my eye.
The Beat... so much time there. It was like the end of an era when it closed.
@TimmyCherry the Beat and Tower Records, what a time to be living in Sacramento. I would go to the Beat, drop a couple hundred and then go to Hamburger Mary's across the street. God I miss that.
Thanks for listening
They have one of the best cover songs, completely made it their own.
War pigs?
I Will Survive
@@crowchannel3891 well , their war pigs cover was awesome as well
My bad, I’ll have to check it out.
Guarantee these guys have always been the types you’d see next Tuesday
Comfort Eagle is more relatable then when it came out.
One of the most creative bands ever!
Comfort Eagle is one of the top 5 songs on my life's playlist. I have a video of my two kiddos, probably 4 and 9 years old, dancing around in my workshop to it, for the whole song, singing along here and there, just having a ball.
Diagnosed with exhaustion that's interesting. I would love to hear some Mcrea country music now that's he's gone through so much.
I think the label just pushed them to tour and tour to sell albums
I just saw them this weekend & it was literally the best sounding live music I’ve ever heard in person. I will love them forever
Love to hear your take on Metal Church. They were a band with huge potential and talent and were beset with bad luck and tragedies. Pretty crazy stuff.
A highly underrated band
Metal Church + Sir Mix-A-Lot 🔀 Iron Man 🎸 👷🔥
This is exactly why I watch your stuff. Fun, informative, and exciting video. I haven't been this hyped about Cake in years. Cheers! 🍻
He's going the distance !
He's going for speed!
Man, I love CAKE!!! I saw them in Seattle years ago, it was such a good show!!!
They just wanted dental insurance and a 401K.... they should have wrote a song about that lol
I have their CD. Still a good listen when your all alone in a time of need.
Some of the best bass lines back in the day
Fashion Nugget is one of the best albums of the 90's.
I liked it all....Expect when that damn butt rock came along. Limp Biskit, 3 doors down, papa roach all that shit.
Geggy Tah 😊
Don't forget Spin Doctors 😅
@@davehughesfarm7983 Ah yes, “nü metal”, it had neither the charisma of heavy metal nor the authenticity of grunge, yet lives on to this day…
@@markusantonio4866 all I want to do is to thank you 🙏
I got to hang with them backstage, at Universal Amphitheater, back in 2004. They were super cool. They actually talk to me and friends. I told them they were my favorite band. I used to workout to their music, because it had a way of getting me pumped, and then keeping me going. They were the second nicest band I've met, next to Tesla.
These guys are legends. Absolutely love them.
Still out here being one of the greats
saw cake last year and they put on an incredible performance. such an underrated band nowadays.
Cake used to do a bunch of shows at back yard BBQ's and parties in Sacramento. Super fun! That is the only way I ever saw them live.
I suppose he is a left wing nut job?
Let's hear this story...
Do tell…
Saw them this year in Jacksonville, OR. Amazing performance.
In Argentina the band had a BIG hit on radio & MTV with the Gloria Gaynor cover.
The Distance wasn't a hit here.
Saw them live twice! Great live band! So many jams
They actually went the distance…
They went for speed…

I loved Cake ever since I saw them on the Smothers Brothers Hour.
I still have a Short skirt to go with my Looooong Jacket...Na na na nana. Love and miss Cake! Sad Drummer almost killed the band in 2009. Peter McNeal is where he belongs now.
What happened?
I love these deep dives; they help me figure out what music I used to listen to I need to get rid of.
Cake is one of those bands you can play and album and never skip a song they're so good!
😂 For real.
I definitely think the anti grunge sentiment was a breath of fresh air at the time. lol, they were alternative alternative 😅. Contrasting the ubiquitous, self destructive depression music with something very different.
I had a match, but she had a lighter…
I remember when these guys hit with Fashion Nugget, and I was an instant fan. Still am. Great band, and a great video.
Coulda used a whole brass section, but made it work with just one trumpet.
A friend's band opened for them a couple times back in the late 90s and he said they were super cool guys.
They are interesting, me and my son-in-law both still listen to them. The lead singer has strong opinions about a lot of things and I think he has been ostracized a bit for that, which is too bad (our younger society is way too into a censorship sort of approach to ideas).
Cake is definitely among the top tier of the alt rock world. The total package.
The 90's Sactown scene brought us Far, the Deftones, and Cake...
And LGS and Pocket Change .and Cause amd Effect
@@MrERLoner Never heard of any of those bands. I played in a band in the mid-90's from FAR NorCal (i.e. the true northern valley), and we played with a SacTown band called Simon Feck a few times. One of the guys in that band now runs the Torch Club in Sactown.
So many great bands in Sac during that time and The Cattle Club was the spot.
I loved Jackpot and Oleander!
I saw them in 2005 at an outdoor event, it was such a fun show!
I can definitely smoke a fat blunt to this 👊
Very underated band. So many great tunes. Most people liked their tunes but never admitted they liked cake..but they did.
still love Cake, but around 2016 i noticed their Facebook page became more about stoking political division, than promoting the band, and their music.
Same. Politics broke a lot of brains.
Cry harder about it and see if that helps, weakling.

So you disagree with their politics, they made some good points, and you couldn’t handle it? Okay.
They headlined alongside Primus at All Good Festival in 2015, and both bands got kinda politically preachy during their sets, spreading a general sense of malaise throughout the audience… like… le sigh…
