I really enjoy the Chosen series but I have to agree with you. A person that knows the Bible can distinguish between what's entertainment vs the Word. But...I can see where certain aspects of it can be misleading to someone that is seeking Christ.
Don't let the Chosen be your Bible. ❤✝️✝️✝️

Weirdly, one of my biggest concerns with the chosen is the amount of people I've heard saying that the chosen brought them back to God, or made them "fall in love with Jesus again." I'm not concerned that they are coming back to God or faith or whatever, I'm concerned because the Jesus of the chosen is not the actual Jesus, but merely the creative team's interpretation of the actual Jesus. And I fear many people are drawn to/devoted to the creative team's interpretation of Christ, rather than Christ Himself.
If the Chosen is the catalyst that brings you back to God, that's fantastic. But the real Jesus isn't the one revealed in the show; the real Jesus is the one revealed in the Bible.

Exactly this. People are replacing biblical Jesus with the Chosen Jesus and many people are seeing Jonathan Roumie as the face and they’re content with that. Not a true representation of faith and could lead to false conversion. Acknowledgment of the need for a savior and true repentance is the only way to lead to true sanctification and a relationship with Christ. Yes, God can work things out for our good but I stay away from the Chosen. If one doesn’t have enough discernment, it’s best to not be a stumbling block for others

I watched seasons 1 and 2, which encouraged me to read the Bible for the first to myself. I never did because I have a hard time reading but I have almost finished reading the whole Bible. However, I still have concerns with the recent controversies around The Chosen and putting words into Jesus' mouth.
We all need to take a balanced view of this. I'm thankful and have donated a lot of money to The Chosen because of what they did to help my faith walk AND I'm concerned because I don't want others to be led astray. (Which is happening)

My take is that it is always better to make an original story with Christian themes (i.e. C.S. Lewis or J.R.R. Tolkien) than to make an adaptation of The Bible. Making The Bible itself into entertainment inherently waters it down and it is just better as a Christian artist to lead people to the glorious and inerrant Bible than to try and adapt it yourself as a flawed and fallen human who lacks the same exact Godly inspiration the Biblical writers had. Christian artists can and should honor God through their output, but The Bible itself is not entertainment and it is foolhardy to try and create your own version of it. God bless you and your ministry as always.

If scripture teaches it, it came out of Jesus's mouth. If you preach a doctrine, and you justify it by scripture - you are putting that doctrine in Jesus's mouth. Scripture doesn't teach the hermeneutic or philosophical approach Augustin, Maximus, Luether, Calvin, Wesley, or Anselm used to arrive at the doctrine that you say God says is true. There is no way to have doctrines with names without, in some sense, "putting words in Jesus's mouth." Translation is changing the quality of the sound that came out of Jesus's mouth (so it changes the aesthetic quality), and all translation involves interpretation, so all translation also puts words in Jesus's mouth. Nothing in Christianity is "safe" and it wasn't intended to be, it seems to me.

Dozens of times while watching the chosen, I'll question if something is biblical and discover something they pulled from in the bible that went over my head in the past. @@faeleia There's something deeply flawed with your and @Samfan4Films777's reasoning. Since Jesus is fully God and fully human, it's not right to ignore either His humanity or His divinity. Both are core parts of His identity. In fact, it's a heresy called Docetism that asserts Jesus wasn't really human. The fact is that the Gospels give us a summary of His teaching but not his personality. What we infer as Christ's personality are usually assumptions based on dogma not Scripture. For me The Chosen has revealed how I've taken for granted what I always assumed about Jesus that was not actually evident in the Bible. Jesus is perfect, but does perfection mean He never tripped and bruise His leg? Does it mean that He never accidentally spill a cup of water? Does it mean He was the best athlete, that He could run 10 km without breaking a sweat? Does it mean He never got sick, not even a cold? These are rhetorical questions to drive the point that we know precious little about Jesus, and even if The Chosen was never made, we still have all this baggage that we need to rethink.

    • @faeleia
      @faeleia Год назад +7

@@zachhecita I agree, Jesus is truly Man, truly God. How else could he be our high priest and redeemer without being embodied in the body of flesh like us? However, I don't think disagreeing with a humanised portrayal of Jesus equates to ascribing to doscetism, which is a serious accusation, for one denies the physical body of Jesus, following a false god. In this case I was more disagreeing with humanising Jesus by applying human moral flaws to the character when Jesus IS morally perfect, by nature of being God. The chosen which was known for adding attributes to characters (like Matthew being portrayed autistic in the Chosen but was not at all mentioned or hinted at in the gospels, so they have added to the character of Jesus. The scriptures do not give information on whether jesus stubbed his toes or spilled water by accident, so I'm happy to say i am not sure but will be glad to meet him and find out in future. I would imagine he was limited to the same constraints of an earthly body, prone to decay and illness (yes I think the earthly body is also subject to diseases, stresses (he sweated blood from stress) and illnesses.. after all, he was killed at the cross and pierced and spilled blood right). As for run 10km without breaking a sweat, Jesus DID walk on water, so at least we do have an example of him doing something that defies the laws of physics. As for personality, other than morally perfect (which is essential to fulfill the law to redeem us) I believe in the trinity, and we know the fruits of the Holy Spirit, patience, loving kindness, gentleness, self control, wise, love, joy etc and we know God is merciful, loves righteousness and hate sin. Now these would be what I think is biblical and fair to apply to the personality of Jesus without resorting to dogma. Plus, God's ways are not man's ways, his thoughts are higher than our thoughts, it's a fair assessment to say Hey, I don't know what Jesus was really like, but I am keen to know him more, so I will follow what's in the scriptures and politely decline to accept wholesale the portrayal in media.

I've been using discernment since the beginning, and I tell my children (teen and tween agers) that we can't believe this is exactly what happened back then. Even my atheist husband has been getting into it as well. He began looking up in the Bible what the show had said to find out if what they said in the show was real. We also told our children that Jesus did live in human form, but he's still God. I told my kids, Jesus had a mother, an earthly father, family, and friends, and he worked with his hands, and even though he did or had these, doesn't make him less of our Lord and Savior. Because God sent himself in human form as a living sacrifice, who's perfect and just, and is above all that has been and that will ever be, because he loves us so. This is definitely a show where we have to use a lot of discernment! My husband began to love me in a better way because of God's word from the Bible, but he also saw the connection between Simon and Eden, which started making him think about how he was treating me. But again, everyone should use tons of discernment. God said to use discernment in everything, regardless of what it is or who it is. God bless! ❤

I'm one of the people who enjoys the Chosen very much. From my perspective, it's helped me to stop seeing God as a person who's waiting for me to mess up to punish me; as an abusive father, basically. With my change in perspective, I now find it easier to go to the Lord in repentance. Not because my faith hinges on the Chosen, but because watching the Chosen made me want to go read the Bible more.
Of course, I also understand that people might get carried away and start treating the series like it's the Bible, when it's not. That's a danger that always comes with every movie/show/etc that centers around the gospels. I could take it a step further, and say that any piece of art that depicts anything surrounding the Lord carries that danger. Because even that can become an idol, and it has.
Edit: I also want to say that the show can't be blamed for the mistakes that other people make. Especially when there's a warning at the beginning basically telling people that the show's *NOT* the Bible. That aside, as long as the Chosen doesn't contradict the Gospel itself, then I don't see it as something to take issue with.
Edit: Regarding the "I am the Law of Moses" line. I understood it as, the Law being the standard of God's holiness. That in order to have eternal life in God's holy presence, one must meet these standards. These standards were given to man to show that we cannot measure up. That we need someone who *can* meet those standards, because those standards are sourced from God. Jesus IS God. Those standards are met in HIM. Perhaps it would've made more sense if the line was "The Law of Moses is me", or something to show that it's sourced from His holiness.

Just think about how Jesus was tempted in the wilderness by the devil and the devil tried to twist scripture to deceive Jesus. Jesus couldn't be tricked because he knew his word, but unfortunately, most Christians don't. I never comment on videos, but I completely agree with everything you said in this video and really appreciated your insight. However, one thing that I wanted to add when it comes to Angel Studios being mormon and the fictional elements that are not in the Bible is that, frankly, as you mentioned, the majority of films that are "Christian" are rather corny films. Angel Studios is a distributer of a lot of different films now, some that are not even necessarily "faith-based" but hold to conservative, family-friendly principles that we see disappearing from American culture (I.e. The Sound of Freedom). Unfortunately, to my knowledge, there are not many, if any, strictly Christian studios that could put out anything like The Chosen. While the animation studio is based in South Africa, Angel Studios will also be putting out the animated film "David" in the next year or so. Many Christians have a lot of issues with Disney, and "David" is a film that *should* have all of the good principles that parents want for their kids while having the musical and animation par of a Disney film. However, if you write it off because Mormons are best able to get it to the big screen, you're stuck with Disney. I'm not saying this is true of everyone by any means, but a lot of Christians complain about the state of culture but they don't actually do anything to change it. Additionally, The Chosen is about the chosen being the disciples, not distinctly about Jesus. The fictional elements are there to provide more of an idea of what it meant to be a follower of Jesus. That being said, I also agree that we have to be cautious and realize that this is a tool--not The Truth, not Scripture. Like any other devotional or Christian resource, you can find false theology in just about anything (especially Christian and worship music) because we're still flawed and will never have a complete understanding of Scripture until Heaven. So I believe it does come down to maturity and knowing why you believe what you believe. Someone can say that The Chosen is unbiblical but be living in sin and vice-versa. Anyways, long rant but just wanted to add to the conversation! :) I so appreciate what you do!

I think the problem is when people watch The Chosen and it stops there. As Christians we really need to be discerning with everything we watch, listen to, read, etc. The best example of this is the Bereans in Acts that we're looking through the scriptures to see if what Paul was saying was true. We have to really have this type of heart and discernment with the Chosen just as much as we should with our pastors. We cannot be lazy and not read Scripture and think the Chosen is enough. God calls us to love him with ALL of our heart, soul, and strength, and mind. So this includes using our discernment to really test whatever claims media is making against what Scripture says.

Also, the fact that Jesus rejected worship from Nicodemus when He was bowing down to Him during the John 3 scene is totally unbiblical and blasphemous. The idea that Jesus did not rehearse for His sermon is not found in the Bible. It's an assumption borne from dogma rather than Scripture.

He isn’t pretending to do signs or trying to convince people that he is the real Christ or asking them to treat him like that. He isn’t teaching some different gospel. Clearly you don’t understand what that verse really means. It’s a tv show based on a book and as such things like dialogue and scenes get added to be able to change it from one medium to another. Are you aware of John 21:25, where John makes the point that not everything Jesus did was recorded? Anything they have added is plausible and nothing they have done has contradicted the gospel message or the character of Christ. Now if you had been actually watching the series, you would know that they do the Bible scenes pretty accurately and even word for word. As far as moving things around, the gospels themselves don’t have everything in the same order. Each book was written to a different audience, the show is bringing that gospel to a different audience and people are reading the Bible and souls are being saved as a result. People around the world are actually being led to saving faith as a result of the Chosen. Do you have a problem with people being drawn to reading the Bible and being saved? Isn’t that something that we should be doing, actually commanded to do; encouraging people to seek the Lord? God is at the center of this, He has been from the start and He is clearly working through this show. Throwing out a random verse that actually has no relevance to the show, sure isn’t drawing anyone to know the Lord.

An authentic portrayal would explore Peter's marriage beyond the surface level. The reality of following Jesus is relationship-centric - our relationship with God often reflects our relationship with the people in our lives. For that reason, I don't think you can fault The Chosen for placing a heavy focus a on relationships. If the Apostles sacrifice their love lives to follow Jesus or integrate their love lives with their ministries, nothing biblical is loss. Either outcome captures important parts of Christianity.

Also, adding on to what somethinggood said Catholics believe during the holy communion that you can actually turn the bread and juice/wine into the actual body and blood of Christ. That is a false doctrine. That is never spoken of in the Bible. Also, Catholics believe they need to confess their sins to a priest when, in fact, you should go straight to Jesus and confess them. Also, Catholics call their priests father. When it clearly says in the Bible, you are not to call anyone father but God the Father. For it is written "And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven." Also, lastly, Catholics believe that you need to do good works to go to heaven. When it clearly says that "we are saved by grace through faith not of works lest any man boast." Catholics I've spoken to seem to never read their bibles. It seems they have no concept of what being "born again" is.

@@theragingviking On the sacrament of the eucharist: John 6 : 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
The followers of Christ grumbled and then finally left after Jesus explained this several times while lowering his verbiage, he RAISED it saying you must gnaw on his flesh, a literal chewing, then some disciples left him. And he turned to his apostles and he didn't say "now what I actually meant is..." no, he instead said "are you going to leave me to." Which shows he was being literal.
Matthew 26 : 26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
This is a literal and direct command from Jesus Christ in the Bible. It is not a false doctrine, and you are speaking against Christ.
On calling no man your father: Matthew 23, he also says to call no man Rabbi (teacher), I hope you therefore didn't call your teachers in school teacher, or EVEN your biological dad father.
On faith vs works : The Catholic Church has never taught such a doctrine and, in fact, has constantly condemned the notion that men can earn or merit salvation. Catholic soteriology (salvation theology) is rooted in apostolic Tradition and Scripture and says that it is only by God’s grace-completely unmerited by works-that one is saved.
The Church teaches that it’s God’s grace from beginning to end which justifies, sanctifies, and saves us.
Works only prove that you have true faith, because you are faithfully following Jesus Christ when he said to feed the hungry, help the poor and needy. If you have faith but don't bother to help those in need you don't have true faith because you are no obeying Christ.

Their intentions are not to be a replacement for the Bible so people idolizing characters is not their fault. Many Christians criticizing the Chosen will go and watch Netflix/secular shows and have no problem with it.

Just wanted to comment that just because it's "spiritual content" doesn't make it automatically better than anything secular. There are thought provoking secular shows that, witting or unwitting, carry Biblical truths, and there are "Bible" shows that are far more damaging than secular ones, partially BECAUSE they are seen as spiritual and have far more influence and ability to manipulate or deceive. Wolves in sheep's clothing, Satan as an "angel of light", whatever you call it, there are just as many warnings in Scripture about those who portray or teach "Christianity" but the teaching is off. In fact, I would say lies, deception, or even just misguidedness is far more dangerous when mixed with so much truth than is someone watching something with no such claims. Not that I condone the mindless or constant consuming of worldly content, either...

I have enough concerns with the Chosen that I wouldn’t watch it personally, but I’m not opposed to a mature Christian watching it with the mindset that it’s a historical fiction, not a scriptural retelling. My bigger concern is when the show is used to present Jesus to new believers or people who are being evangelized. It may be tempting to use the show to introduce someone to the gospel in a way that might seem more emotionally relatable, but I think it’s a mistake to not take people directly to scripture. Even if the chosen is 99% accurate to who Jesus really is, I’d rather present someone with the 100% accurate Jesus found in the Bible!

There is no Mary worship in the Catholic Church, just a lot of Protestant understandings and deceptions. Really if you want to understand what we actually believe the RUclips channel Catholic Truth really covers a lot and remember Protestants cut 7 books out of the Bible. They were in the Bible’s of all churches except for the kingdom cults(Mormonism, seventh day Adventists, Christian Science churches, and Jehovah’s witnesses) until 1885 AD. There were less than 5000 bibles for a population of 100 million people just in Europe back in 1750 AD and only about 60% of people could read. There’s a lot of clear obvious holes in thinking that the people who’ve studied it the least among all the churches has the best interpretation of it whilst the church that preserved it for 1500 years before people made their own translations(Lutherans) and that new translation they wanted to remove the book of revelations the book of James and several others but moved those books to the back. I feel like there’s really not the slightest idea of Bible history, church history, and even the history of what the original Bible study was. A catechism was present within the early church of almost every big denomination the Lutherans had one, baptists had one, calvinists, Anglicans, the episcopal churches, Church of England had one as well if it’s even a church anymore and not just an institution to keep nationalism strong. Adherence to doctrine is a clear error in practice in western churches which is why there’s build a churches where you can spend $199 for a church building kit and why getting ordained as a minister to marry your brother or sister is this casual purchase. When you divorce meaning from title the significance of time and spiritual reflection that once was important becomes more as an inconvenience and strict rule rather than a faithful pursuit for an ultimate sense of a greater relationship with God with a ton of responsibility attached and discerning whether it’s what God wants you specifically to do and pursuing it for 8+ years through study and sacrifice for God’s glory. Give us this day our daily bread and feed my flock is symbolic to Protestants and I really see a ton of people who are hedonistic and shallow. Hope you don’t fall for the trap forever

Job got a lot taken from him, and Solomon had so much that he found it all to be meaningless. As a "disabled person" who would be cool with being healed but also is fine with waiting to be healed in Heaven (life on earth is so short), I find Solomon and Job's lives to be inspiring to me. OR they could go into a short film about Habakkuk when Hab was telling God "God, there's so much injustice! where are you?" then God replied "I'm doing something so great, you wouldn't believe it even if you were told"

It was so great that it got a lot of people interested in history and captivated by a story and characters that seemed very stale otherwise. BUT Lin took a number of creative liberties, which he has every right to do, it’s just that if you don’t look into the true details you could be taking an incorrect view of events as fact. I’ve also had this problem with kids shows like VeggieTales (which I love, so no shade). They sometimes change things for the understandable sake of making it palatable to children, but then you look at the actual story and you’re like ok that’s actually not at all what really happened. I think the overall lesson here is that we should never take creative adaptations as fact. Just like we shouldn’t take whatever our pastor says on Sunday as end all be all fact. We should always be checking for ourselves against the scriptures and letting that be the final authority.

Dallas Jenkins has openly called the Mormons he has worked with his “brothers and sisters” as if they share the same faith in the same God. And in any case, Dallas gave a very thorough explanation of why he, his Evangelical writers, and his multi-denominational (non-LDS!) doctrinal advisory team felt that Jesus declaring Himself to be "the law" was not that large of a theological leap to take, especially in service of such a huge "mike-drop" moment.

@@Daniel_Godismyjudge--Isah33.22 First it's important for you to remember that without the Catholic Church tradition you wouldn't have the Bible in the first place.
Secondly what you've essentially done here is mention that the Catholic Church has things that go against YOUR interpretation of Scripture which many other protestants would disagree with.
Apostolic succession is in line with what the Bible teaches. Jesus gives his apostles the authority to forgive sins, to heal, to cast out demons. The mission Jesus entrusted to them to spread the gospel was to last forever until the second coming so the apostles before they died had to appoint bishops as successors to take their place. Christ tells his disciples whoever receives you receives me and likewise the apostles would pass on this message this message to their successors to continue the mission given to them by Christ to spread the gospel.
The rest of this list is honestly full of information that completely misrepresents the Catholic Church
Catholics don't worship Mary or the saints. Catholics ask the saints to intercede on our behalf which means we ask them to pray for us. This is because God is the God of the living not the dead and so we believe that those who have died are alive in Christ and therefore not dead we ask them to pray for us just like you would ask a friend on earth to pray for you.
Transubstantiation is real beyond belief it's baffling to hear protestants who write it off as symbolic when Christ says unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you have no life within you and instituted the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. On top of that there are Eucharistic Miracles backed up with scientific data that show that Jesus is present in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.
Jesus made Simon whom he named Peter the rock of his church and gave him the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever he binds on earth is bound in heaven and whatever he looses on Earth is loosed in heaven. Jesus proclaimed to Peter that the gates of hell would not prevail against his church and to protect his church he sent them the Holy Spirit. The Pope, who is the Bishop of Rome was Peter's successor and just like Peter is the head of the church and the other disciples unite under him.
I recommend reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church so you get a better understanding of what Catholics believe and why rather than repeating straw man claims that are easily refuted by those well read in Catholic theology.

We have to test every spirit and every wind of teaching by the scriptures 1 John 4:1. Eph 4:14.
The Chosen is not inspired scripture and it will contain errors. It's wrong even to take Charles Spurgeon as scripture. A good theologian can still make dangerous errors.
That being said if you can keep separate scripture and the speculative elements of this show, there are some powerful, good things going on.
    1. Growing up I never actually thought about the human nature of Christ. I always knew He was God, but I never considered Him experiencing humanity. Parts of the show where we see Jonathan brush his teeth, or accidentally cut his hand, get tired, have a sore back, play with little children, smile as he heals an illness or injury. Seeing these things depicted- some directly from scripture, others not, caused me to have more love for Jesus. Seeing him grieve, or be tempted to fear of Rome, or be tempted to anger toward "the Sons of Thunder" gave new meaning to the passage “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Heb. 4:15).
Jesus experienced so much suffering on our behalf, and watching this show helped me think of Him in a deeper way.
    2. There is good to be gained from a few of the hypothetical situations in the show.
Did Jesus refuse to heal a disciple of illness? Not recorded, but the message is in line with scripture. Job suffered terribly for the glory of God. Paul was given a thorn in the flesh and asked Christ to remove it. The answer: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Cor 12:9.
Yet the show did a good job depicting Jesus' healing of Simon's mother.
Did Jesus invite an enemy pharisee to pray? Not recorded, but we see Him speak compassionately with Nicodemus and the rich young ruler. The message this show gives to us is that no one is beyond evangelistic effort. We are to share the gospel with all people and as far as it depends on us to live at peace with everyone. Rom 12:18.
Did Mary Magdalene return to her sin and need to be brought back to Jesus after fleeing to Jericho? NO! This one is bad, and almost certainly not what happened. Yet God uses this episode to give people the courage to openly repent of sin that they have confessed before and backslid into. Her experience while fictional reminds repeat sinners that if they repent, Christ stands ready to forgive! Not just 7 times, but 77 times 7. Matthew 18:22. (I'm not telling anyone to test this). We died to sin, how can we live in it any longer. Rom 6:2
So, the show is not gospel, but it can lead people to Christ and serve as a catalyst to more careful study of scripture. I think it is worth our time to watch with caution and discernment.
Perhaps a watch party would be in order?

As a Catholic myself, I have a few points from your video
    1) Jonathan Roumie being Catholic has nothing to do with the show. He isn't going to spread false things about Jesus because the Catholic Church created the Doctrine of the Trinity that you use today. If anything, you should have warned people about your fellow Protestants like the oneness Pentecostals that reject the trinity; or the 5 point Calvinist that say that Jesus didn't die on the Cross for everyone.
    2) I think that what you meant to say is that the Catholic Church doesn't line up with your interpretation of the Bible.
    3) I would recommend you stop saying the "Roman Catholic Church" because the name is actually the "Catholic Church." Roman (or Latin) is just one of 23 Rites within the Catholic Church so although Jonathen is part of the Latin Rite, that isn't always going to be the case and you might find a different rite. It may sound like a small thing, but it isn't the correct name for the Church.

Peace be with you Friend ❤️
The Catholic church today isn't the same as back in the Day.
The Catholic Church teaches many doctrines that are in disagreement with what the Bible declares.
These include apostolic succession, worship of saints or Mary, prayer to saints or Mary, the pope/papacy, infant baptism, transubstantiation, plenary indulgences, the sacramental system, and purgatory.
While Catholics claim scriptural support for these concepts, none of these teachings have any solid foundation in Scripture. These concepts are based on Catholic tradition, not the Word of God.
