I love watching a High School kid try to squeeze saw dust out of the bat and then make a weak swing and wonder why they can't hit.

Absolutely agree! Teaching kids, I like to get them young before they develop some bad habits. Had to tell my own daughter to tell her softball coach to stop trying to change her hand placement into the knocking knuckles together grip. The rest of the girls started holding the bat like she did by halfway through the season😂. I am older and you are right, my generation was knocking knuckles top hand with punching knuckles bottom hand. Always. I remember Steve Garvey was the first good finger grip hitter I saw and there have been a few but the vast majority hold it bottom-punching top-knocking with the grip on the callouses.

Knob to the catcher and palm to the pitcher will put the hands in a great position with flexion in the wrist for power and barrel control.

I find that, even if you start out gripping the bat "wrong", instead of correcting the grip try correcting the arm placement instead. Like you showed, if the rear arm points straight down or too high, adjust that arm and the bat grip will correct itself with that adjustment.
Or another way: hold your bat out in front in contact position. If my hands are properly palm up/palm down at contact, for me that automatically means that my knuckles align about "half way" between big knuckles and knocking knuckles. So that's the way I try to grip the bat from the start, because I also want to make contact in that position. And I don't have different bats to try out right here, but I suspect this might not only depend on your individual hand size but also on the handle diameter of the bat and even if you grip it at the knob or choke up a bit because the handle isn't straight but tapers in and out.
But an additional grip question: what do you think about Prohitter? Because that changes where the bat lies in the top hand slightly.

most people put the bat in their fingertips because Sheffield and Bonds used to do it. i found it to be quite weak and i had no control of the bat though
