Fascinating stuff, Julian, as always. I do like the newish modern flats which you aren't so keen on; I'm not so keen on the prices!!! Brunswick House looks beautiful; shame about the backdrop. Very interesting about the stretcher/railings. I don't remember that bridge being so colourful. I once lived not so far from there on Wandsworth Rd, I think it was. Very interesting about the Pleasure Gardens. I now know where the MI6 building is. I loved London for there always being something interesting to look at; so much to see & do, made all the more interesting by your fascinating commentary. Thanks again.
The Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens once had concerts for those attending the place. These werecalled the Promenade Concerts and were later revived by Sir Henry Wood and his Proms are the successors to those earlier concerts.
Great stuff as usual! But you missed a trick, down in Vauxhall there was the old "Kennington Palace" built and occupied by the "Black Prince" , Edward prince of Wales (father of Richard II). I think there is a Black Prince pub around the corner from where the palace used to be and there are a few base remnants of it. There may even be a plaque of some sort ;)
I went by the US embassy at Grosvenor Square a few years ago. On the guard building there was a sign saying all that was forbidden such as smoking and photography. There was a pictogram showing one of those round bombs with a fuse on it; the picture had the red circle with a diagonal line through it. So the meaning is, if you have a bomb please do not bring it into the building. I looked at that and laughed my head off. The guards looked suspicious.
At 9:05 you will see the Vauxhall Tavern pub, In 1970 I and a few work colleagues lodged there when working in London. Yay!! I’m so happy. Vauxhall is my favourite place in London. Did you go to the other side of St George’s Wharf, near the Thames Clipper? Those buildings are meant to look like ships. Amazing! In fact, "Boksal" is one of the few words I dimly remember from my attempts to learn Russian. But I've never have made any connection to Vauxhall.
Hi Julian. The new embassy is atrocious. I had no idea that the old embassy had been sold, and I cannot believe that the American people were not told. Hi jools, are you going to go back to nine elms to what they have done now. Also Bridgestone have featured Vauxhall pressure gardens, as well as other bits. You will get loads of hits if you do a Bridgestone filming tour of london love your films....
Well Sir Julian, another excellent video, my parents move into a brand new tower block, just up the road in Tyers St, in 67, indoor bath, etc, yes, it had all the mod cons. Hahaha....I go back occasionally, to see family, but looks so different these days.
There is a similar video about the stretchers in RUclips with the title: Hidden history of London railings - BBC London News. However these railings which are made from stretchers are on Pytchley road at East Dulwich suburb of London. It is highly probable that many of these stretchers carried corpses of people who had horrific deaths. If only the railings could speak. I suspect that these kind of railings are ambiguous in the working class areas of London.
Oh, I haven't seen that film. Probably on purpose because I feel that they should employ me but never do. Yes, they're dying out but a few estates still have them. You can donate to them at the stretcher railing society.
A sad remnant of when Post-Modern architecture was fashionable, and it's even a really bad example. When I saw it the first time about ten years ago from the Pimlico (which does not have a Jools video) side I couldn't believe it. I also noticed the also Post-Modern MI5 building but I didn't know what it was until later.
I thought the pontifex maximus was the person who set the number of extra days a year to ensure the seasons were in order before the caesarian calendar
I'm actually planning a little walking tour later this year when I visit London again, starting from Victoria station down Vauxhall bridge road, across Vauxhall bridge, up the south bank then cross back over Westminster bridge to Buckingham palace, down Buckingham palace road back to Victoria station. Feasible?
Could you tell me where was the HMSO (Her Majesty Stationery Office) located at nine elms? I used to work there in the 90´s but I cant find the building anymore!
A common Category Error. Trump isn’t politics. He’s surrealist black comedy, like Kafka’s Metamorphosis. Only this time, Americans (like me) woke up the morning after the 2016 election to discover they’d elected a giant orange cockroach as their next President.
American here, and I agree 1000%! Those "modern boxes" are UGLY! Give me the older styles, Victorian, Gothic, etc. Those are Beautiful! One of these days those ugly buildings will fall down. I hope we replace them with something that will last a long time - York Minster, how long has that been standing? Love those old buildings!
Joseph Forest .. I'm a born Londoner. I heartily agree with you Joseph, don't know who passes the plans for all these ugly box looking structures going up all around London, but it really is starting to really piss me off ... I love the old architecture of Victorian, Gothic, Edwardian etc that gives London its beautiful history, not these glass and steel ugly monstrositys ..........
Nothing wrong with modern! Like all of you, I love the old buildings, but that doesn't mean modern cannot be beautiful. Something I love about London, is the juxtaposition between the old and the new. Often very dramatic!

Hi jools, are you going to go back to nine elms to what they have done now. Also Bridgestone have featured Vauxhall pressure gardens, as well as other bits. You will get loads of hits if you do a Bridgestone filming tour of london love your films....
Where would we be without Joolz ?
Lovely shot of the pony watering the petunias.
I'm a child really.
It's the Borg cube - resistance is futile !
I'm an American, I'm a Trekker, and I agree with that statement.
Was the power plant at 2:26 on the cover of a Pink Floyd album?
Johnny McG - Yes. It’s Battersea power station, as featured on their album ‘Animals’.
Well Sir Julian, another excellent video, my parents move into a brand new tower block, just up the road in Tyers St, in 67, indoor bath, etc, yes, it had all the mod cons. Hahaha....I go back occasionally, to see family, but looks so different these days.
There is a little B and B in Bennington sq a little gem
Another great video full of interesting information titbits....nice 1 Joolz 👍👍👏👏
Thanks..one of my favourites this one.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING US🔥🌎🔥
It’s been 5 years since you’ve showed us that future pool, has it ever been built?
I used tô work at the HMSO located at nine elms..I wonder if that place still exists...
i really like your guiding youtubes
Aww! I was so disappointed you didn't stop by a pub for a pint, specially at the end. what you're on the wagon?! 👌😉❤🇵🇷🇺🇸
So you owe these beautiful fences to the Blitz! Don't be so angry with the Huns! :-D
A skypool? In London??
You didn’t show the oval house right by the cricket grounds where Montgomery used to live
You're in my manor! I always thought ARP meant Air Raid Patrol.
I will steal the term "brave new matrix" for my own personal and business use thank you.
Fun London Guides - Julian McDonnell Films BBC is so arrogant. I hope the change their mind.
Open is the German brand both own or were by General Motors
Yet another great Vid Jools
Thank you Ben....I'm getting there! Been ill this week though....so a bit behind.
I like the look of St. Georges Wharf
Yes, a few other people have said that too. I guess it's a matter of taste. I bet it's costs a fortune though.
OK, that is indeed ugly. Sorry but it is ugly.
Feasible?
Yes, I think that would take a good afternoon... Maybe 3 or 4 hours if you stop in the odd cafe!
Could you tell me where was the HMSO (Her Majesty Stationery Office) located at nine elms? I used to work there in the 90´s but I cant find the building anymore!
Thought you wete drifting into politics there....but phew, - one corner of utube still safe
Ha ha!! Yes, a cunning ploy to lure in viewers. Everyone else does it after all! I don't know enough about it to voice strong opinions.
Terry Berry Make RUclips comments great again!
...I'll show myself out
Don’t know enough about it? Don’t let it stop you...no one else does either and yet they have strong opinions anyway...its the Internet, right...😂
A common Category Error. Trump isn’t politics. He’s surrealist black comedy, like Kafka’s Metamorphosis. Only this time, Americans (like me) woke up the morning after the 2016 election to discover they’d elected a giant orange cockroach as their next President.
As a tourist from Canada , I hate these modern structures. If I want to see modern structures , I shall stay home in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Hear hear! I know what you mean.
I am also in Toronto, that building that he says is ugly looks just like the Queens Quay
They are turning Toronto into a shithole city
Love the Sure Thing reference. Excellent film
9:03 Yeah, thats what I needed to see. 🙄
@Stephanie Logan Do you mean to say, on your way into church, you saw a horse relieving himself?
