  • Mike Maslanka, head nutritionist at the Smithsonian's National Zoo, talks about what it takes to feed 2000 animals from 400 different species 365 days a year. Each one receives a diet specially designed by National Zoo nutritionists that not only meets their nutrient needs but also encourages them to employ their natural feeding behaviors.
The Zoo's commissary is one of the world's largest zoo commissaries and is about half an acre in size.
In all, 13 people make up the Zoos nutrition team. Two members of the team are certified nutritionists. Of all 220 zoo members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, only 11 have nutritionists, and the National Zoo has two! But thats not the only thing that sets the Zoo apart. The National Zoo is also the only zoo that makes all of its own hay, which is grown at CRC.

Having the animals forage for their food also keeps them from getting bored or depressed.

      Keith Parks
For thinking, feeling, people, you are right.
But in the not so distant past, zoo's didn't give a damn about the animals' quality of life. They were just money makers. And in a great number of smaller zoos, private zoos, and in many third world countries, they still do not give a damn.
Enrichment activities for zoo animals is a relatively new concept.
Here's an example. In 1994, a popular polar bear at the NYC Central Park Zoo began spending his days swimming non-stop laps in the pool in his enclosure. He would swim for twelve hours at a stretch, every day.
Visitors became concerned and complained to the Zoo that something was very wrong with their prize polar bear.
Zoologists deduced he might be suffering from an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and needed medication. He was given Prozac.
Under pressure from the public, they called in animal behavioralists, at a cost of $25,000, who examined and observed him.
The expert's "common sense" conclusion: He was bored.
The experts recommended enrichment activities like hiding his food, putting special treats inside objects that would offer him a challenge to retrieve, changing his diet, providing a larger more natural enclosure complete with a jacuzzi, adding new features and sometimes moving things around (sort of like rearranging the furniture).
Well, what do you know? The OCD non-stop swimming of laps lessened greatly. And the popular polar bear was happier. And the visitors were happier. And the zoo's brilliant success was heralded throughout the land, featured on popular TV shows, the national news, books, and in serious news magazines.
Enrichment activities for zoo animals finally came to the fore.
Under public scrutiny, major zoos that fell short in this area publicly vowed to adopt this revolutionary concept.
So what may seem like common sense hasn't always been so common after all and is still a problem.
So that's why I mentioned it. Hopefully, someone would read my little post, scratch his head, and have a "Eureka" moment. As in, "Maybe we should do something like this for our animals, too."

Oh Dear this is how it is. Wild animals are meant to be free. Certain people help animals who no longer survive in the wild. Of course there bored, not to mention miserable, and depressed. There HELD CAPTIVE. FREEDOM FIXES THAT

Wow, the responsibility of these professionals is high. These animals need feeding and rely on that provision of food from a third party, each day.

When i go to the zoo, the only excited animals I see are people. The wild life in the zoos is literally exhausted. I enjoyed my time at the zoo, but I didn't like how the animals were depressed. I think we need to look at new architecture to see if we can build more "open" and habitat like zoos rather than scraping 2 or 3 things together and calling it natural habitat.

    • @user-nh8lu8qh5f
      @user-nh8lu8qh5f 3 года назад

@The Magic Twister animals can get depression from lack of stimulation, and many zoo habitats are nothing more than glass cages that don't adequately meet their needs.

Did he really say commissary? Because The Thing about commissary is exact relation to being in jail. And that's the only time I've heard ever heard of commissary, so basically hes admitting that hes forcing them to eat what he makes them eat and. He calls a commissary that might as that every animal might as well be in jail.
