Guess it was because it's a reverse horizontal cut (for right-handers) so it's really difficult to get it right. They're probably all laughing because they know how difficult that last cut is and have all struggled with it.
Ok, Australian Government will see this video and ban butter knives. I do like a girl who smiles after inflicting a killer blow with a killer sword. Very impressive.

It seems he traded speed for precision (though still fast as hell of course) and I notice that when most of the cuts are fast but not precise enough the mat gets caught and flies off whereas with a clean cut it stays there for longer..
you dont need that much strenght if you have the skill . any moron could go full force and cut wet straw with a katana but the aim is to cut it perfectly with controled force
I took some iaido classes for a few years and this was pretty accurate. Last hour of class was usually bringing the damp tatami mats out and setting them up for cutting. It might look like a lot of their swings don't have a lot of power behind them, but they do. It's all coming from the lower body like the hips and back. Those smooth casual swings would cut your hands off. Though generally when not cutting Tatami, practice iaito are used.
I like how they show the failures as well as the successes. It takes a lot of practice to do this stuff flawlessly. It is not as easy as some make it look.

After playing Ghosts of Tsushima, I now can somewhat understand the frustration of not cutting through them all and the excitement in getting it. I just wish I had half the discipline these practitioners have.
This is something I really appreciate. Seeing a young learner becoming good is brilliant, but sometimes it is also amazing to remember why a master is called a master. It's MESMERIZING! I have a lot of respect for masters and mentors (and this applies to pretty much everything you can learn from a master).
Whenever I see demonstrations like this, I start to wonder what the actual capacity of a real-life samurai from history (when samurai were in their prime) was like.
From what I read, most of the things like the graceful movements and all were basically non-existent. Samurai fought closer to how a gangster in Brazil fights with a machete. Of course, most of the skills still were preserved, but there was a lot more expedience in their movements since speed is life. I also believe they didn't slash as much as they stabbed with the swords. There is no evidence to say either way, but I just can't imagine a cut being very useful considering most wore some form of armor especially if going to war. A stab would be far more effective. Just like IRL military, when they teach how to fight with a knife, they teach stabbing to end a fight as it is much more effective than cutting and waiting for the enemy to bleed out.
@@DaveSmith-cp5kj slashing was useful at that time bcs they were obviously a lot stronger, faster and more precise, through an armor plate of course stabbing will work, but imagine the damage when they land a clean slash on the joints of the armor, such as elbows, shoulders, knees and specially the neck, shit, a sword war must been just outrageous, vicious, brutal, demonic, we are just blessed to live in such peaceful time..
@@DaveSmith-cp5kj You’re right about that. Excellent job! I can tell that most of these men would be very professional in their younger years. The first mat they cut is usually perfect. The second one is where the mistakes happen. yea, especially the one at 13:28 where he misses the target, and the sword kinda flails outward for a second. Could be really dangerous as the grip is expecting a hit, so theres a slight risk of the sword flying / getting twisted out of the hand.
Wow impressive, the elders the young showed real skills, respect and the fortitude of a professional, i think that is just the way they are thought. I'm no expert but it seems that the aim here is to be able to cut the roll as many times as possible, as cleanly and quickly as possible. Because during a real battle/flurry attack you never know which strike may actually land due to the opponent defending, so all of the swings during a flurry must be accurate, powerful and fast enough to slice the roll... And maintaining endurance of that must be hard when wielding a katana those things are not light - I've seen the hands of people who train with them and they are all calloused up! Props to these guys doing this in their elderly ages too with so much skill
It's a display of technique and skill more than it is a display of power. Katana are not like axes, if you try to chop with them like you would an axe then it will not make a clean cut. You have to "slice" as well as "chop" in the same motion (kind of like a fishing rod, instead of an axe), and you have to make sure the slice is straight otherwise you will lose force and might not complete the cut.
