Awesome video. Last week I used all your instructions and painted my mother's desk. She has a small wood, solid desk that she wanted to keep but it was not in good condition. I made my chalk paint using your instructions and today she texted me saying she loves it more every day. Thank you so much! We spent less than $50 with new hardware for the drawers and everything. Now she has a beautiful desk with character and a story about how her daughter brought it back to life!
if you had a patreon, id donate a few bucks to it for this tutorial. this tutorial was perfect; no wasted time with a long intro, no excessive "umm", it provided options and reasons for choosing... i am so impressed and grateful. if only all tutorials were styled like this
When I am painting from a container I put a piece of aluminum foil over the top, punch a hole in the middle and peel it back almost to the edge. This keeps the paint off of the rim.
I’m a fluid artist. To get rid of little flakes and lumps, just pour your paint through a fine mesh colander into a fresh container before later use. I keep a small wire handled one with my supplies so it’s handy whenever I need it.
aha_oui make sure the jar is plastic if adding a marble for mixing, as the weight and velocity of a marble while shaking it to mix will break a glass jar. :)
How about a smoothie mixer cup? You know, the large plastic cups with a lid that has a metal spring -like gizmo in it for mixing smoothie or shakes on the go?
Great DIY tutorial but even greater were your tips for a protective finish. I never knew all the things you shared regarding the different protective coating products. THANK YOU!

This is an easy, step-by-step, tutorial. I like how you had the separate measuring cups of different sizes, good visual presentation. People will remember the recipe so easy. The finale was the icing on the cake...when you spoke about the small obstacles to watch out for when choosing a product to seal with and the ending when you explained a few complications you experienced while using the chalk paint that you mixed and why it happened and how to correct it from happening to those of us who will try these techniques ourselves. Wonderful Video!
Great recipe, thanks! You can also put a few marbles on the bottom of your paint vessel and it will make it easier to mix it up initially and through out your project paining.
Try adding the plaster of paris to water, not other way around. And use hot water. I use more water so I can shake the plaster of paris water mixture. Then you need to leave the container so the solids settle to the bottom of the water. Throw the excess water off and add your paint. Use a kitchen sieve and strain the final mixture through it...
Totally agree! I watched so many videos for a few weeks that left me with more questions than answers. Finally is clear. What to do and what to buy. @MrDiYDork what paint and brand is this love the color!! Thank you
thank you for simplifying DIY Chalk paint. This tutorial is simply wonderful, easy, well done. WOW! I loved the color you chose for this project. I love it.
l figured it was Plaster of Paris in Paint...and the Price l've seen Quarts of Milk Paint sell for is ridiculous... $30 or more! That looks so awesome! l will never understand why some people freak out at the thought of painting wood? Sometimes it truly increases the value of Piece and painting furniture is an Art unto itself!
Thank you for sharing that was very informative and I can't wait to try to make my own paint like that I really appreciate it and the table looks wonderful great job

Thank you for your very informative video. I bought plaster of Paris at Walmart for $3.50 and use a left over paint that I already had. I saved lots of money.
After watching so many videos on furniture painting and searching high and low for the right (color), expensive paint, I finally found your tutorial, wow, thank you, this is awesome!
II had the same problem with the diy chalk paint using plaster of paris...My solution was to put the water first, then then add the plaster of paris until it is the consistency of pudding. I also used a mini wisk to stir. Then add the paint. It worked like a charm and a lot less expensive. I also used the polycrylic
LOVED this video. Thank you, Mr. Dork, for such great info! Just an fyi for others who may love Annie Sloan's chalk paint colors but don't love the price, a blogger has gone to the trouble of matching AS's colors to Behr colors (from Home Depot). So, now that you know how to make your own chalk paint (thanks to Mr. Dork), and you want to use AS's authentic colors, you can find the color matches here: vienna.pink/?p=205
great job! I love how clearly you show, and tell what everything does, in a short consise order, without trying to be funny, or long winded! xcellent!!
Great video! Do you have any advice about painting wood floors, especially without stripping them? For that matter, do you have advice about painting linoleum?
Hey Kevin...on the subject of finishing, I saw some information that advised that, though it works well over latex paint, polycrylic may not work well over matte latex. The additives in matte paint keep the “easily dried” polycrylic from drying up. It remains runny leaving behind cracks when dried. I guess I'm wondering if by adding the plaster of paris to the paint (I used latex eggshell) do we change it to a matte latex? Did you have any issues with the finish not drying? P.S. Really appreciate your videos...they are very comprehensive...Thanks!
Also...and assuming that the polycrylic is the product that I use, how many coats would you apply. I am doing kitchen cabinets. I would like to protect the cabinetry against potentials food/drink splashes and nails. ;)
Do you know how long before it dries out and hardens in the jar? I’m thinking of making this ahead of time and use it a few months later. Will that work?
Can chalk paint go right on any surface or do you need to sand first? I have an oak curio cabinet but it's finished with a shinier coat or maybe veneer? I love the cabinet but not that natural oak colour. I'd like to make it a nice espresso colour if I could.
pinkyt67 Yes with chalk paint you can apply it to any surface. Then seal it, I like polycrylic. You can choose from matte to shiny and everything in between.
Is Menards a regional home improvement store? I bought a huge box of chalk dust online! It's come in handy several times other than making chalk paint. For example, it makes an excellent rubbing compound! I had someone back into me last week. My red SUV had white streaks all over my door. I buffed all over them out but 2 small places that took the paint off. First I used WD40 and a sponge, the chalk dust paste and a buffer attachment on my girly cordless drill. It was amazing! Then once I accidentally poured scentsy melted wax on my leather shoe. I stuck it into that chalk dust the second I peeled the wax off. It absorbed almost all the oil out of my shoe! I still have most of the box after making 2 quarts of paint and doing the projects above. Best $15 I've spent. I'd say I can make at least 8 more quarts!
Dear Mr. Dork, thank you for this great tutorial, I’m going to give it a try. Could I use this on a book shelf that I’ve already painted but is chipping in spots because I paint on the cheap veneer without sanding?
The cheapest immersion blender for this, is the «whisk» you get at hardware stores, meant for your drill. You get them in different sizes (and prices, but in general, they are cheap). You wash them and reuse.
Can this be used on plywood as a chalk wall? I’m putting together a little playhouse for my daughter and want to add a chalk wall but wanted something other than the black.
This is pretty cool. BUT, two alt ways. Use real CHAULK powder. I think you have to increase the amount a little over Plaster of Paris. The second method is use Baking Soda. Yes, Baking Soda. Its what I use and it works great. And its very sandable. But it will turn even a semi-gloss to more of a flat.
@@brawyn777 Baking Soda is all you need and a little bit of water. Add small amounts of the soda at a time until you get the consistency you desire. It will take a bit of stirring because you don't want clumps. If you add too much soda, add in a bit of water. This does not work with oil based paints. It is also better to use a flat, matte or egg shell. Semi and full gloss do not work as well.
Ok, thanks for the info but do you mean chalk powder or baking soda instead of plaster of paris, the rest of the recipe is the same? I didn't want to use acrylic latex (latex allergy). Can you share your recipes? Thanks so much!
@@PeaceOutWorld The "recipe" can vary depending on the look you are after. But I am talking about real chalk powder. You could use baking soda as well. If you have a pint of paint then usually 1/2 to 1 cup of chalk powder or baking soda will do the trick. You could cut down on the chalk if you use Milk Paint. Although with milk paint, you cannot store it for a long period of time.
When I distress, I use the wet method. I let the chalk paint dry for maybe 20 minutes, then take a clean lint free rag , soak in water and wring out as much as possible, then start off lightly rubbing where you want to distress, and put as much pressure as you need to get the look you want, works great.
Too bad I came across your video pretty late! We are in the process of painting our kitchen cabinets they've been strip down and sanded already! If I had seen your video before I would've just used chalk paint and saved me all that trouble!! Anyways this video was very helpful love the color you did an awesome job! But I will try this on my other pieces of furniture thanks so much!
That looks really nice!! I found this video by accident: I didn't know you could make chalk paint at home! ☺️ Good one! 👍 For the finish: would some spray-on clear acrylic do? That comes in matte.
