That is unbelievable! I work at a Nordic course and those skis actually look like the ones old-timers donate to us, can't imagine slaloming like this on skis like that!
Danke euch beiden.
The little jump before each gate is hilarious to watch - what a weird style compared to today... 😂The ski technology has moved forward to say the least.
The gates weren't hinged at the bottom in those days, so the skier could not just push it out of the way. They had to get their whole body around it. That fact, along with the skis and bindings of the time, required that technique.
It’s an artifact of the way old skier worked. The skiers were stiff and didn’t have the modern metal reinforcement. The modern metal enables a greater amount of flex and the execution of a carved turn where the edge makes “smooth”contact with the snow (ice lol). This equates to much more control and power from the athlete contributing to the stability of the turn. Then the metal rebounds and returns the energy back to the racer which accelerates them to a much greater extent. The old skis did not have this level of energy or control and the skier was most more “falling” or “dancing” down the hill. The energy of the racer didn’t go into edge stability but instead was used for propelling the skies to the new location. Arguably the older style is more aerobically demanding but the racer is wasting a huge amount of energy (with regards to its contribution to the down hill acceleration). Modern skiing is more powerful and a lot more of the energy can be used to load the ski and accelerate (hence why racing made the switch… it’s just faster to ski this way haha)
Hansi is a true ski legend together with Ingemar, Thöni and Gros...!! Skiing on Blizzard Sport (1965/195cm) or Atomic orange (1973/200cm) with Nevada Look binding was not difficult. I remember Blizzard Thermo Ski (1982/200cm) as the best skis I ever had. I still do it fine at +70
Hard to believe we used to race using those techniques of rotation, stepping, knee angulation and never hitting the gates or you could break a leg or knee
lol I have world a few GS races where the mountain is demanding a closed hill… this is for 14 year olds I can’t imagine a WC race with people that close haha
This is fantastic to see. At a guess the modern skis would do that perhaps 10 full seconds faster? But the skills to do this is incredible. Love that no one is wearing helmets too. Fine for parks and the high speed events but overkill on the mountains for most of us I'd say.
No carving since skis had no curves. Closer to jumping to transfer weight faster between turns. And the last few competitors kind of navigate through spaced moguls and use a similar technique as hotdog. Shorter and larger skis could have helped use a more modern technique but were not available either.
Now you know why snowboarding grew so big. This just screams Misery on full display for all to see. Sights like this motivated me to get into snowboarding in early 90s.
So many comments about helmets... Did you not understand what you were watching? Why would you need a helmet? Armor on shins, pole grips and forearms same thing. Slalom, today is a drastically different discipline from what it was fifty years ago.
Very cool. Back when skiers were real athletes with real talent. No hinged gates, enormous gloves to protect their dainty hands, with skis that are longer than todays GS skis. More difficult to ski on than todays stubby skis that ski all by themselves? You bet! But this is pure class and talent. I stopped skiing a while after "shaped" skis came out. I tried them, more than once, and hated them. Like so many sports now, made things too easy, takes away all the challenge and fun. Ok, flame away....whatever.
The difference in ski technology from now to modern day is astounding
Mostly radiused skis. The rest isn't that different. Modern skis turn themselves, old ski had to be turned.
@@testboga5991 The difference in side walls and camber, invented by snowboarders and now applied to skis, is massive.
Also the ability o skiers!
The still go down the hill and zigzagging between the poles. Much bigger difference between cross-country skiing from 1974 and today.
If now is now, when is modern day?
Looks like he is out of control and in control at the same time.
Naaah, to me it looks like he is in full control.
@@JeffZuccMusk he’s on the edge… races are won by flirting with… but not actually being to much
Dont forget the ski i the 80s is different and not carving. I learned to ski beginning g 70s and believe me it was very technic…

When skis were long and skiers knew how to ski them.
what are those yellow things that he had almost on the front end of the ski?
@@turnpike It's to prevent the skis from crossing over each other. Not sure how well it worked to be honest.

Wow....ohne Ritterrüstung, ohne Helm, ohne Carving Ski
Held meiner Jugend....so cool 😎
La qualité vidéo est super bonne pour 1974 !

That's how most athletes did it back then......
Poles are sooo close together, skiis are huge and I am happy he made ut till the end.
That’s impressive skiing on those skis!
Moja mami ga obožuje!❤❤❤ Greetings from Slovenia!
Nice to see fans so close!
Years ago, he was a coach at a ski camp I attended. Good guy and a great skier!
Wahnsinn.
Hansi er helt fenomenal...⛷💞🎶🌹💋🇧🇻
Proper skis these days☺️
Slalom on 205s with gates that don’t give was a wild time. I was always pretty bad at it.
Good video quality..wow

Too young to recall the broadcast, but not the times. No headgear, ⛑️ stood out. Not wanting to mess up our hair probably played a part.

Longer skis, perhaps?
i know it's pretty randomly asking but do anybody know of a good site to stream newly released movies online?
Longer and straighter. Typically, 200-205cm.

Professional ski racing without helmet feels so wrong nowadays.
Back when we use to ski on real skis, 205cm.for slalom and 223cm. for downhill.
Hansi Hinterseer?
Wait, where do I know this name from?
Alpine skis have had metal edges since the 1930s.
By the late 1960s most were laminated sandwich construction with aluminum, composite or both.
Like in James Bond movie; no googles, no ski helmet, wind in the long hair😀😀😀😀
Now days gate sticks shouldbe steel
No helmet is crazy. These guys must have mega concussions and missing teeth along with the standard broken fingers!
