A funny scene from the 1995 comedy sci-fi film "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" featuring Sam Rockwell, Zooey Deschanel, Mos Def, and Martin Freeman.
If I got it right, the idea with these flyswatters was that they explain why Vogons never think or do anything creative (unless their poetry counts, which it should not) is that these things kept slapping their ancestors until the survivors had evolved into unimaginative bureucrats. Also why their noses are so flat.
@@kubikkuratko188 1995 was the best year for USA in my opinion, 1) invented the Internet which the world is starting to adopt, and 2) just stopped a Genocide in Bosnia, the last time when US demonstrated its military for humanitarian good.
i might be wrong about this but if i remember correctly douglas adams wrote a rough draft for the movie and this scene was something that was in that early draft that they put into the movie
Sideshow Bob: "What? A planet without any agriculture? That means there are no hoes or any tools like that! Finally a place i can think *Slap* freely.....urrrrgh....."
Love this scene. But quick not to the person that uploaded this video, the description says 1995, but the movie was released in 2005 (not trying to offend anyone in any way, shape, or form whatsoever).
HHGTTG needed the Peter Jackson LOTR treatment. At least six movies would be required to turn the audio books into film. There is that much material to work with. To try and adapt all of that into a single movie is just wrong. There was so much in this movie that does not exist. The book needs to have the look of the 80’s TV series. The only thing they got right in this film was using the voice of Stephen Fry. The book always has to have a British voice.
I thought I was going nuts. I remember seeing this part in trailers and I watched the movie a few years ago but didn't see this scene. Is there an extended version or something?
I love the scene where Marvin the robot is talking to the ship. The short lines had me crying with laughter: Marvin: I've been talking to the ship's computer. It hates me. 😂🤣😂🤣
Quite literally slap stick. It gave a sort of reason to slow them down a bit and act as humor because without comedy the entire series would be dull. You wouldn't want to read or watch something if it never had a hint of pointless comedy to it. This stuff is what The Emperor's New Groove is practically built on. It's also really funny to see them get hit in the face every time they think about thinking.
Hey smartass, you do realize that the joke is literally making fun of slapstick humor, right? Every time anyone starts to think or use their brain, they get slapped in the face.
@@raphaeldagamer Yeah cause thats the joke, trying to think and actually come up with funny jokes will always be trumped by slapstick for general audiences.
I love that as soon as Arthur figures out what's happening, he uses Zaphod to test his theory.
RIGHT!
"Zaphod, what do YOU think?"
(Pointing up and making a "smart" gesture "I think (swat) AH! What was that?!"
I tell my students that I think this is what happens to them in high school.
Oh so thats why the vogons are fine.
They have no ideas
I think that's a good theory. *Get's slapped in the face twice for thinking about a theory*
Exactly.
Their environment completely reinforces mindless bureaucracy by slapping all independent thought out of them.
@Lucien Studio Vogons don't think about the bureaucracy, that happened long ago. they just keep it going, which requires no thought.
Lucien Studio no, their bureaucracy is already established. they are just moving the machine.
That's also why their noses are perched high on their foreheads, which is interesting because-
*slap*
I love how zaphod sets himself up for a speech and gets smacked two words in
Anyone notticed that the prop that swats zaphod, actually breaks against the helmet?
@@nixie2462 I noticed that too and it gets stunned for a second after it does.
people like to dump on this version, but the vogsphere and the point of view gun are genuinely brilliant additions
Zaphod's second head. Enough said.

This film came out in 2005 not 1995
ten years after that horrid bosnian war and bosnian genocide ended. but yes, 10 years indeed! been 14 years since this MAGNIFICENT film came out too!!

it took me years to understand that they attack because they are thinking / have ideas
You probable wouldnt bit hit Much then
@@sbravo3761 Mic drop.
My dad explained to me that at 1:32 they got hit because they all thought "I think it worked"
@@raphaeldagamer Okay, that's funny asf
Irony
And this is why the Vogons' noses are shoved so far up their faces, too.
Also, why they don't think very often.
Their home planet of Vogsphere punishes them for it.
Yes!

By far the “Flyswatter” is the best and most hilarious mine field in the whole galaxy 🌌. Where can I purchase these?
Please don't, this species are invasive, due the fact that they don't have any natural predator.
I have no idea.
"I think---" *THWACK* "Owwww!!"
Plant shovel seeds and water those in field then you would have field of flyswatter.
Can we install these in parliament?
0:53 best part of the movie for me
Totally agree.. Sam Rockwell is hilarious
"...I think-" *Gets smacked in the middle of face*
The one that hit Zaphod gave its life did you see it shatter?
RIP Random underground fly swatter who may or may not have been a loving father and husband
You may have died too young idk
????-????
lol. it really did. That one should hurt. I bet the actor was pretty annyoed that this happened but still rolled with it.
I think it shattered because the edges of the swatter hit zaphods helmet
Is zaphod Sam Rockwell?
@@darrilmiller8167 yes
That guy really knows where his towel is.
Hey you sass that hoopie ford prefect. There's a frood who really knows where his towel is.
Just look how Ford caught the flyswatter, he won't able to do that without the towel.
ah so this is why Hollywood doesn't take any chances on anything original anymore....because it's a whole darn field of these stupid flyswatters!!!!
Perhaps they are Vogon ancestors
I read your comment in Weiss' voice.
@@michaelmartin8337 My God, that is way too accurate
I thought they were called slap sticks.
No wonder the vogan’s became mindless Bureaucrats. They probably evolved that way to keep from getting slapped
hah! was my favorite part of the movie XD
Lol...1995.

The most Monty Python-esque sequence in a story created by a Monty Python writer/content creator....
Most funny scene from the entire movie. Tbh the movie is really funny, but this scene is brilliant :D
Brilliant scene
Very cleverly done
Marking ignored again and the little head sigh was bang on
I think the flyswatter needed a guide entry
I don't remember fly swatters in the books... am I losing it, or did they make that up for the movie?

They should have done the entire series in three movies instead of trying to compress them all into one movie
Or at least a short TV show with 6-10 episodes.
