The lack of a converter for Lamys is because they are directed toward the European school market where cartridges are primarily used. In countries that school children use fountain pens, bottled ink use is a lot (edit) less prevalent. Some companies will sell pens with a converter in the US but not in the EU or UK. I’ve seen Waterman changes depending on the price level.
I think you mean cartridges are a lot more prevalent in countries where school children use fountain pens. Cartridges are actually much more popular all over Europe than they are in America. I know many fountain pen users who have never used bottled ink at all. But at the price Lamy charges for these pens, the profit margin is huge, and they should come with a converter wherever they're sold.
@@jamesaritchie1 thank you. Some days I need a proofreader. I’d be interested to see what kind of profit margin they actually make. With the pens being made in German and not China, the materials and labor cost not to mention shipping cost of added weight per pen can add up. This did make me dive into numbers a bit. Per Wikipedia about 1/3 of employees are sleeper investors so they get a share of the profits. With 78 million in revenue, and 340 employees, you are looking around 200,000 per employee without costs removed. I’m not saying they still shouldn’t have a converter. Even if it’s just in places where bottled ink is widely used. I just think the reasoning and context is interesting. I almost looked up the weight per safari and the weight of a converter to see a ratio of shipping weight conversion but I decided that was a bit too far for a hypothetical lol.
