      Unfortunately all work has stopped on the restoration of 223. The State of Utah owns the locomotive and plans for the 223 are in a state of flux right now. Either the locomotive will be a static display in a museum or be restored to operational status. A final decision does not seem to be forthcoming in the near future.

      @@bluefoxy6478 Ogden City is negotiating with the State of Utah over ownership of the 223. All work has ceased since last year. There is no indication of how long this will continue. Our group is trying to convince the State to donate the 223 to the Cumbres and Toltec to complete its restoration to operational status and run the train on their narrow gauge railroad which was our goal. there's no narrow gauge in Utah so it would be pointless to restore it fully here. Are you going to be able to get a riveted boiler certified? I was involved with the restoration of a Portor Locomotive and we had to have a new welded boiler fabricated as the state inspectors wouldn't let us steam the riveted boiler over 1 bar after repair. From the video your shell looks to have more erosion than ours did.

    • @LeeWitten
      @LeeWitten  7 лет назад +4

      Right now its anyone's guess. We've been concentrating on getting the running gear dismantles and refurbished and putting off the boiler work until we find some source of funds. We have a grant writer working on that situation right now. Hope it bears some fruit.

    • @oldiron1223
      @oldiron1223 7 лет назад +3

      Take it for what it's worth but as for somebody who has been there check with your state boiler inspector before investing any money in that old boiler. If you need to have a new boiler built finding a shop who can replicate a fire tube boiler is a bit of a challenge. The shop that built ours has "retired". I know the Grand Canyon Scenic had a boiler similar to yours, probably a bit larger fabricated for one of their locomotives. Might want to contact them to see who did theirs.

    • @hallkbrdz
      @hallkbrdz 7 лет назад +1

      Is the 1912 Klondike #4 2-6-2 also a riveted boiler? It's hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks very similar to the one on this engine to me. If so, the Wasatch Railroad Contractors repair shop in Cheyenne, Wy I believe just overhauled that boiler for the Como operation.

    • @obfuscated3090
      @obfuscated3090 6 лет назад

      There was no arc or gas welding suitable to boilers at the time so the most likely answer is it was riveted (unless the boiler is a newer retrofit).

He and his wife Karyn just posted a new video on his "Toy Man Television" RUclips channel about Union Pacific's current restoration efforts on the biggest steam locomotive ever built: the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy.
    He has captured some outstanding footage of the restoration progress going on now inside UP's Cheyenne shops. I thought that you, as a fellow railroad history aficionado, also would appreciate seeing this restoration progess video, so here's the RUclips link for it: ruclips.net/video/DYps9lYmSlA/видео.html
