I am 95% sure I know the DM and his wife. My roommate sent me this video today because he actually played in a game run by a husband and wife DM and he told me this exact same story about the Chosen of Mystra/Gold dragon DMPC bullshit months ago when it happened. Either these are extroadinarily similar stories or I have had the displeasure of knowing them both personally. I don't care to air out additional dirty laundry, but I can express that their table was a very uncomfortable one to sit at and removing them from our other game got rid of a hell of a lot of stress.

thats the thing though, Ilmatar is a diety of mercy and suffering or something close to, he preaches that you shouldnt kill but is also one to free the tortured and brutally destroy the torturers if he decides to intervene. • @Nionivek
      @Nionivek 4 года назад +15

Few gods, if any, outright forbid killing. Ilmatar does have specific Clerics who are forbidden to kill but they not only wear specific clothing BUT they are meant to provide healing to anyone who needs it friend or foe (and honestly if THAT specific cleric under Ilmatar killed someone... I'd probably fall them).
But outside of that, Ilmatar isn't against self-defense and has done so himself. Yet honestly if the DM thought the god worked like that, why the WORLD did he build the Paladin in such a way as to be antagonistic towards that goal?

I feel like the biggest issue in DMPC horror stories is that the DMs in them seem to always use homebrew race/class and make the DMPC ridiculously powerful. In this story it was the Chosen of Mystra. Protip: If you're gonna make an escort mission, MAYBE don't make the NPC (or DMPC) the DnD equivalent of a laser guided ballistic missile. Your players will quickly lose interest when it becomes clear that the person they are escorting could easily just go to their destination their own damn selves. Since apparently a DRAGON is no match for them in a 1v1.

Im working on a homebrew-campaign but i never want the campaign to break out as a "revolutionary new Lord of the rings like masterpiece " -story. Just a cool setting and cool adventures that the player can play and interact how they want.

@@craigtucker1290 Oh I had a good one. Had a DM try an "unlimited" campaign. Lvl 8 start point for PCs. Our only instruction was "Run wild with creation". I homebrewed a PC who was a sentient medium sized Adamantine Golem. Bear in mind I followed the custom race rules for P1e. So the only traits from an actual Adamantine Golem that she kept were the Indestructible and Fast Healing traits plus standard construct immunities.
DM found out why you don't give players free reign like that REAL quick. My PC wasn't even the worst. My buddy who is a complete rules abuser made a half vampire Dragonborn that had 48AC at level 8 and had a Vorpal reach weapon that crit on 15-20 (that the DM GAVE HIM). The DM gave up after first session. Just about nothing could hit my buddies Dragonborn creation and my PC couldn't die unless brought below 0 by very specific weapons/spells. So he either had to TPK us or else we came into the next fight at 100% health WITHOUT using magic or healing potions.
High point was the final boss before DM gave up. It was an adult dragon. Took my golem PC to -50HP in one hit so I was out of the game until fast healing brought me back up. Buddies Dragonborn vampire PC walks up, rolls a 17 to hit, a 20 to confirm, and beheads the dragon turn one.

If their destiny is confirmed then i highly doubt most paladins would say no to helping them.. whats so bad about slaying a dragon exactly? Most gods know that there are some people or creatures of things that run opposed to their ideals. Paladins to these gods usually have a divine pardon to use lethal force when necessary so long as a peaceful solution is attempted to the best of their ability at first.
This was information I discovered when one of my players wished to be a paladin for a god of peace and music/festivals and was worried it would mean they couldn't help in combat. At the time I didn't know and gave him a net and reminded him of the help action but I spent the post game pouring over research until I learned the info above.
This DM is doing a lot of things wrong but the biggest offense to me is not doing the research between games to make sure all the players are enjoying themselves.

Greetings from lovely Restenford(i need to send my servants to the market tomorrow, so hopefully it'll stop raining...)!
As much as i'd like to say otherwise, i myself was guilty of having a Trusted Lieutenant (re:DMPC ) go with my adventurers (though it was completely unintentional on my part). It can be hard as an Upper Noble to not have favorites amongst your court, as we are all mortal and sometimes can't help it. This in no way makes up for the Nobleman's actions within the Assignment(OP and her husband did the wise thing and left before it obviously got worse), it just explains why it'll sometimes happen. In the end, it's up to the Upper Noble(as well as the Adventurer's they've hired) to try to curtail the actions of their lieutenant so that the Adventurer's can do the job they were hired for....

I fortunately had a good time with a DMPC. I began playing DND 3.5 at about 13/14 in 2006, with my next door neighbor T, his brother R and M, who lived across the street. T and R's dad was our DM, a Gygaxian Era pro DM who had made a custom megadungeon in a homebrew world. In the megadungeon there was a web of interconnected "black portals" that would take the player from one point in the dungeon to another. Each portal was a flat black void set into the end of a hallway. Each portal was only one-way, once entered it could not be exited, if you re-entered the portal you just exited it would take you somewhere else entirely. At the time I was playing a human rogue, T was a Dwarf cleric, R was a halfling warlock, and M was a gnome barbarian. In our early adventures at level 1 we first encountered a black portal. Generally at that time, we were overcautious about everything. We spent at least an hour experimenting with the portal, throwing in torches, ropes, marbles, and anything else to test what the properties of the magic were. By that time R, the warlock was sufficiently board. He charged head first through the portal while the whole party screamed in panic! He immediately turned around and went back again sending him 4 levels deeper in the dungeon than the rest of the party, to the DM's cackling amusement. Reluctantly the party followed the warlock in an attempt to save his tiny black-hearted life. We then spent at least two sessions wandering blindly in a dungeon, deep underground, pursued by blood-thirsty knolls. Finally we barricaded ourselves in a dead end room and were under siege. We slowly ate all of our food, drank all of the water, and slowly ran out of lamp oil. The DM knowing this was turning into a TPK sent a DMPC to our aid. Geoffrey, a 8th level fighter was sent in by the wizard to tasked us to explore the dungeon. He finally found us and helped us hack our way through about two-dozen knolls to our freedom, where he promptly called us rash idiots and hoped he would not be needed again. Geoffrey eventually became a reoccurring NPC in town who we could ask for advice.

Then when we had to get past a big group of guys, he DMPC transformed into the Monk's father (using some kind of spell) and scared the whole group with no combat. As a DM that regularly uses DMPC's (Typically because we run party's of 3-4 not including myself) I always make mine as focal characters storywise(They need to have a reason to be there, not just cause your Dming) but support's in combat. I generally play then as ranged back-line characters who primarily dole out useful party buffs so that my players don't have to worry about using their own concentration on it. (Unless that's their thing of course) I also make it a rule not just at my table but across my personal gaming server that ANY DMPC needs to be built like a PLAYER not an npc. Now I'm not adverse to making npcs super strong, but they are never to be used as a permanent party member. Unless my players want to keep em around of course. It's happened a few times that they've really liked one of my npcs and didn't want to get rid of them, but that is always their choice. I also have a rule that if a NPC has access to something ALL my players should have access to said something as well. So if I use homebrew for one of them, my players get to use homebrew as well.

But the main thing is that the players get the final blow to the important enemies and when the party is big enough he just leave or ward ppl that they need to escort.
In fact, in the main game, the Paladin has a complex history that if the players are willing to continue with it, it will lead them to a small emotional adventure that depending on how they finish the game, could influence years later, but it is not something indispensable, it principal role is so I can play with their emotions so they get attached to other NPC's

I remember my first actual game of D&D where the DM showed off his DMPC while introducing the game to two completely new players.
The DM was a friend in college who was a self proclaimed jerk. He was the type of guy that stood up for what he thought was right with or without apology, and was surprisingly a pretty great guy most of the time.
I told him that I had wanted to play D&D, and how the closest I had gotten to beforehand was sitting down, hearing the setting and roleplaying my character looking at equipment or something.
Anyway, he offered to DM a game with me and another friend of his that was also wanting to try D&D out for the first time.
The issues of the game were immediate. I knew what I wanted to play as from the start. I had an original character that was a race that wasn't available in any game at the time and wasn't represented in a way I liked if it was in a video game. So I asked if I could play as an anthropomorphic wolf and he told me that he only wanted me to play as one of the core races. I also asked if I could play with the stats of a human or something while looking like what I wanted my character to look like. He said no, so I decided to go with an option I had heard about that sounded cool.
I went as a human fighter that was going to be focusing on their dexterity. I never learned the classes of the others, but the other player in the group went with and elf and the DM's character was a "400" pound dwarf. We were starting at level one with only basic gear while he would be at level 3 with an ax of fire and ice and other magical items I can't recall.
We started in a tavern and I was, basically pretending to be myself and have never liked the idea of alcohol so when asked for an order I just asked for milk and was made fun of until I had my character take a drink. Then I had to roll for consuming alcohol, rolled badly and was immediately drunk and given penalties.
Admittedly we didn't start the game on a good note either. I can't remember why, but the other player's character started everything off by throwing a mug at the DM's character promoting a fight, which immediately went south for the player.
The player lost most of their health after single hit and decided to book it out of the tavern. The DM decided to have his character pursue him, and I thought that he had already learned his lesson so I decided to stick out my foot to trip the DM's character while planning to help him up afterwards. Though, he told me to make a roll for it and I rolled poorly. I thought "no big deal, I'll probably get my foot stepped on and take some damage or something at worst."
I was so wrong! I was thrown to the ground and immediately knocked unconscious.
Later the others got together for a bounty mission and left without me when my character woke up with a hangover, all before I had really gotten to properly meet the others in character. Due to some luck I got over the hangover with a roll and, ignoring the fact that we hadn't met, I headed out after the others.
However, it was night time in the game and I was playing a human character with no visibility in the dark. The DM decided to have his character sneak up on mine to scare him. As I was still pretending to be myself I knew what my reaction would be, but when he got a bit of a better roll than I did and he decided that my character would scream and crap their pants...
Since almost no one pays any attention to needing to go to the bathroom in roleplays, and games in general, I assumed that I just took care of my business and we carried on.
Anyway we carried on to the Goblin's cave that we were after and caught them all asleep. There were two goblins and a single hobgoblin there. I and the other player went after the goblins and struggled to take them down while the DM took on the hobgoblin. He one shot the thing and then laughed when he realized he had done more damage than he originally thought.
After that we discovered another chamber full of more sleeping goblins. I knew there was no chance of surviving that, after nearly dying to two goblins that had also started out asleep. So I was ready to leave and happily enough so was everyone else. Thing is, the DM decided to show off some more.
Since his character was a dwarf he decided that his character could easily find and hit the weak points in the walls of the cave as we ran out, collapsing the tunnel.
After that, the mission was over and we were going to head back to town.
But of course, the DM had to let me know that my character hadn't taken care of the crap in his pants and that he stunk.
Despite all that, I had a fire burning in me and I wanted to show the DM what I could do. I hoped that I could possibly show him up at his own game. But the other player wasn't interested in playing anymore and the DM didn't want to either with only one player.
So my first official game of D&D only had one horrible session to it, thankfully enough.

I’m always consulting a group on FB of more experienced players for advice on balancing such characters out. Probably the strongest that isn’t a villain but just someone to provide aid is a Dhampir Grave Cleric, and that’s because of a lamp she carries (a relic of her god, which draws souls in, then can deal Radiant or Necrotic damage to any nearby enemies(namely Undead) when she releases the souls to the after life. Which then resets the lantern’s strength to 0, other than the casual blessed light. And this Character? I like her, but I’m planning to have her die. I just hope the players actually get attached to her a bit before it happens. Otherwise, I’ll shift things a bit.

That should have sent up a red flag. DMs should never be playing PCs! It is near impossible for a DM's PC to not be made into a Mary Sue character due to the DM's inside knowledge. DMs are basically the God and when a DM runs a PC, that PC becomes a Messiah and gets favorited by the DM. I would have just quit the group and created my own and tried to fumble through D&D myself. I'm sorry to the narrator that the Mary Sue character ruined fantasy RPGs for her. It shows how terrible some people are at DMing and just want to write a fanfic and not actually interact with the game.
EDIT: I heard about how that character was dumped off... and then the DM created a new character who was just as terrible and had no morals. She was the Shadow Queen in human form. Obvious the DM was just a wanker who wanted to play the game solo with his uber character who was immune to any consquences. As the charismatic but dumb tiefling paladin (that thought he was a human with a birth defect) hoping to go oath of redemption (redeeming monsters) I created good connections with the two PCs but they didn't interact much with each other (we were all relatively new players).
The rogue tollerated my stupidity as I tried to show him the path of light and redeem him from his life of crime and he tried to show me the effectiveness of a less naive approach. I thought the kenku druid (that was 8 years older than me) was a human child with a curse and they were trying to convice me they were an adult and I was trying to get them to interact better with the npcs (often by just picking them up and putting them right in front of the npcs) whilst they tried to convince me that animals and trees have souls (after I killed a chicken).
I didn't really interact much with the DMPCs because one was a cloaked figure that paid us to hunt a criminal and the other was a big silent dragonborn so other than talking to the dragonborn about our 'skin connditions' and horns I didn't have much to talk to them about and they would only reply in short answers. The other players basically ignored the DMPCs.
We didn't get past session one, looking back I think it's because the DMPCs weren't the centre of attention.

Christian Groff I try my best, I’m relatively new to being a DM, so I’ve still got a lot to learn balance wise. I just want my players to have fun, as I’m sure all good DM’s do. I don’t understand why so many ruin their players game just to inflate their own ego. I mean if you want to play in interesting character of your own creation make it a really engaging big bad, not a Mary sue who can stomp the party or any monsters on whim.

A DM NPC is supposed to be for flavor, plot hooks, or utility to help the party. I admit to playing such an NPC, a former teifling turned pumpkin creature as part of his story thus far. He's built for battlefield manipulation and out of combat utility. He can't heal and can do very little damage. But the character doesn't want to deal damage or be the brightest shining star. He's happy just having the party as extra muscle, so he tries to be as useful as he can with his spells in order to have them keep him around and safe from his back story that will come looking for him later in the campaign.

Since it's one-shot, we do mostly canon stuff. Homebrew is okay if you check in with DM first. Some weeks, a dude and his girlfriend showed up with a bunch of homebrew stuff without talking the DM first (they are not in our Facebook group because they don't trust social media) and had to spend a lot of time mid game explaining why they were extremely OP (our group is all at L4) and had certain weapons (turned out guy's character is a starfinder-homebrew artificer)... They made the game not fun.

The GM plays dozens of characters over a single adventure why do some people need to have a PC as well?
If the players decide to get the help of a NPC that's fine, if they do an escort mission, then that's fine too, but don't force your players to take a NPC with them and no matter what don't let them take the spotlight, unless it's a one time thing and a major hook for the adventure.
In my sky pirate game my players have their own crew, 5 1/2 NPC + some faceless ones. THEY decide if someone joins them on expeditions. The NPC are people sure and will act depending on their character, but in the end they are playing the second fiddle and my players are in control.

When I had joined my school Dnd club, I had to join a game around the 3rd or 4th session (late in the game) and I joined as a human male rogue stealth character because I really like playing stealth and being a petty opponent against enemies (switching their quiver with a pile of sticks or sabotaging their horse saddles, and my personal favorite of tying one guys shoe laces together mid battle). The other players who were in the game longer unsurprisingly were more powerful than me a warlock with amazing magic skills and another warlock who perfected to play as animals like an eagle or bear to attack animals; the problem I had was how the DM also had a character who was massively over powered. I don’t have anything against DMs playing a role playing part in their own campaign, but when you grant your character over powering weapons such a a sword with a wishing ability that one’s character can literally wish any opponent away before the two new guys could so much a poke at him was my problem. Despite my inability for my character to play a part in combat, I tried using my characters high intelligence to read the history or perception to read the area around us. Though when the DM claimed we found a chest full of valuable items and began giving everyone powerful elemental weapons, I had to ask him what I got to remind him of my existence but all he said was I got a basic short sword... yeah. I tried to remain calm and just play as much of a part as I could, but my frustration grew to the breaking point when we fought a stone Goliath or Titan and as everyone was throwing lighting bolts and growing plant roots to restrain the legs of the behemoth, all I could do at the max was chip at its concrete legs even with a higher role then it’s DT. Unsurprisingly, the weakness was revealed when the DMs character rolled a perception check even though my perception check found nothing! He claimed that he sued magic to hits its weak point, but due to a low roll it went to the next player. Finally when it got to my roll I had used my second story experience perk to climb the leg of the creature and attempt to stab its weakness but then I failed. Then the Dm got to roll, much to my horror and everyone else’s, he wished it away with his magical sword because he didn’t want to ‘miss’ again; resulting in me, and the two warlocks to fall several stories to the rocky ground. Most of us injured with the exception of the animal warlock who was a bird at the time we decided to rest at the remains of a ruined city which was supposed to be the capital of the realm. While everyone had began to role play a conversation about the campaign story, I had to beg the DM to allow me to roll a perception and investigation roll to loot the ruins of the city. Despite being in the ruins of a wealthy and amazing city all and getting high rolls, all I found was concrete powder, rocks and wood chips. I love dnd but I hate it when the DM steals all the thunder all the time and never allows a new player to learn a bit outside the basics of rolling a dice and chooses to make the new player suffer even though all they want to do is have fun... sorry for ranting but that’s my experience with my first REAL dnd match, my other matches were all games led by first time DMs who had probably read the rule books and watched a few videos before trying a small game like a small band of misfits fighting a ogre that was terrorizing a small town or a band of caravaners protecting a wagon of gold.

I once played at a table where the DM had a character, I was hesitant, until it turned out a good story, but only because she follow the rules as any other PC would if they didnt knew the same things as the omnicient DM, she always told me " well just imagine what would you do if you where oblivious and roll the dice even if you get a natural 1" I am still hesitant when this sort of things happen but at least one person make it work, if you need to know she played a human cleric, mostly because the party lacked one. She always made her character have its turns but no so speciall or Mary Sue type. She did saved one player, but it wasnt a legendaty save by any means. But still I rather not let this happen specially if the character sounds overpowered and what not.

First of all, it seems a lot of player characters trying to DM for the first few times get hung up on showcasing their favorite characters. I too was guilty of such a thing, but the difference is, I made these showcase characters 'employers' available to my players. Naturally, I have hundreds of characters by now, and I still enjoy a light showcasing, but again, they are relegated to a taskmaster position for the purposes of keeping their campaign and their characters the stars of the show. I can be there for an occasional battle with my choice characters, and then relegate difficult quests with them in the same day. It's quite enjoyable!
But the narrator of this channel is right. There are much better DM's out there, and I feel that's what you and your husband need. A structured, player-focused, role-play heavy campaign is usually just the trick to get lots of people hopelessly addicted to such a simple, inexpensive game!!
Good luck finding a better DM, they are out there!

This kick does somewhere between 6 and 12 damage and has a fortitude save to not be nauseated- stunned based on damage dealt. He almost always gets 1 shot by the PCs after that (except the one game where the party just let him beat the shit out of the bard) as he only has 5 health as a commoner farmer level 0

I’ve got a story, and it’s not too long, but it’s still a story.
So I have had little luck in finding a good D&D game, most thing have been homebrew messes that Went about as quick as they came, and the one time I actually played, the DM gave us one action out of combat per room, going by order of rooms in the book (we were playing the starter pack.) and we were not allowed to go back. (I feel it was because he was a last minute recruit of a dm for our game, but still.) In fact there’s is a section early on in the first dungeon you face where if you come in with torches, then they send a wave to wash you out. When that happened to our group, we just packed up and left to go to the town. Yup you heard me. We left. And for those who don’t know the starter set, we needed to save our employer (or since he was dead his right hand man.) from the cave to get paid for our escort mission, and clear the cave to get up to level three. And we skipped that. So of course the next logical thing is to railroad us into the next encounter in the book. It was this part that I snuck a look and read the GM’s book, and started protesting that he was doing it wrong, when we skipped a room with some skeletons that were supposed to leap out and attack us when we passed through. It was during school so when they consistently rolled twenties about three times a 45 minute session, combined with hormones, I left. The other attempt at dnd I had was a homebrew mess that lasted for two session before I got kicked out of this and the rest of his games, forever. I’ll keep it short, he homebrewed a lot and his stuff was devestating if it worked, but it usually didn’t, so we had a annoying fight to get to a boss that wasn’t even half as hard as his mooks, and died to two ice shard spells (after witch ice shard got nerfed. To a d4 and d6 respectively) and the second session, a goblin tanked a divine smite hit dealing slightly more than twice the standards hp for a goblin, and the go up shrugged it off, while a 3 from a rouges dagger killed an uninjured one. It’s because he rolled a d20 after a hit (to every goblin) and decided whether or not it survived, with no set DC. After that things got worse, and me being the socially ackward person I am, who was having a stressful day, decided to blow up a bunch of sparkpowder, magic D&D gunpowder, (that I didn’t have) to TPK and end the session. It was more of a method to stop the playing, because I have issues boxing my opinion, especially in the middle of a RPG game, and I told the DM as much afterwards, and while he understood, he was still mad at me and kicked me out of this and all future games run by him, which I get and deserved. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the story, and have a great day.
Edit: this is just meant to be a blurb as a funny story, not trying to push it as a submission, but if you somehow enjoyed my terrible writing and boring story, then you have my consent. I just doubt that event would come to pass, just wanted to cover bases.

I made a comment on a different video about my first time, but I just want to add more details.
When I joined with my halfling bard, they immediately didn't like me. You piss off the DM there was a good chance of a random demon laser hitting you for 100+ damage. I entered chained to a sacrificial table, and they didn't help me for multiple rounds. When I did get free, one player chained me to the table again and she used it as a weapon. When I finally got free, and because I knew nothing about DnD, all I could do was take some shots with my crossbow. The next session, I was incinerated by a red dragon. I quit showing up for a while, but I decided to come back as a Minotaur Paladin. I had chainmail armor with a greatword in one hand and a shield in the other. One of the other players had Darksteel plate armor and what is essentially a demon killing lightsaber. In three hours, all I did in one session was get off a boat, kill some zombies, get enraged (Minotaur), calm down, get attacked by another player that was possessed by the spirit of a mace, threw them on the ground, and got back on the boat. After that I left.

The completely unself aware DM kept saying "she is there to help you guys. I figured you'd like having the extra help to get out of tough situations." Which also this and other stories of DMPCs, why do so many seem to be guys making hot girl DMPCs?
As for two characters walking up after getting drunk and having no say in the matter. He's done stuff like that telling players what their characters do. And forcing the party to go places they don't want or wouldn't reasonable go on their own by closing all other paths. He even thought it would be "cool and fun" to have a TPK encounter only to reveal it was just a dream afterwards. Yeah cause getting jerked around on an emotional roller coaster is fun... NOT. I have a more positive experience to share with anyone who might happen to read this:
I’ve been DMing the Lost Mines of Phandelver for a while now, and when I started I made a character to help out the party because there were only two players. Meet Jimbo the Barbarian Ape/basically Donkey Kong (when he rages I call it going “ape-shit”; he’s a homebrew Totem Warrior Barbarian with a Gorilla as his spirit animal).
I first introduced Jimbo in a short pre-campaign session with one of the players as an abused animal in a circus that the player rescued him from. Most of the time he just helps the party in combat and the others do the role playing (you know, since he’s a monkey and all). We have four players now, but I still kept Jimbo.
There have been fun moments, including killing a goblin by throwing a dead horse at it, shoving a Bugbear off a ledge into a 20ft pit (bugbear kept failing athletics checks to climb back out), beating a goblin to death with another goblin’s corpse (think Hulk vs Loki) followed by killing another goblin by throwing the same corpse at it, and getting punched by a zombie so hard he was sent flying into a party member (he initiated a grapple check against the zombie and got a nat 1, despite advantage).
Last session the party was fighting bugbears in a cave, they were 20ft up on a ledge and Jimbo had climbed down and was punching the enemies in the face (typical barbarian stuff) when one of the characters jumped off the ledge and called out for Jimbo to catch him (which he did), then a couple rounds later another player (who had jumped off the ledge and landed on a prone Bugbear) told Jimbo to throw him on the opposite ledge to chase after a baddy who was running away (he landed on the ledge, but fell prone when he failed an acrobatics check).
So, Jimbo is fun, makes for a convenient way to get the party out of or into trouble, and I’d say the group seems to like the character overall.

Yesh the DM PCs I have arent op to the point they overshadow my players (having times when they're beaten within an inch of their lives, split from the party, in the direction that doesn't have a big plotline in, or taken out of the fight so my players can shine), but they arent completely useless in a fight.

I have one DM PC that by nature of his rolls, not his stats, is greater than the party. The pC in question is a kobold barbarian using the swolbold attribute stats from the Tome of Beasts by Kobold Press. All his rolls are done in the open and his character sheet is visable to the other players. While stupidly strong his wisdom and intelligence is incredibly poor. That being said he's nearly died and struggled to win with the rest of them and in some cases his absurd damage is a breath of fresh air and levity the party often jokes about.
He didn't start strong, in fact he was even dumber when they first collected him but by games end he was their most reliable blade when shit hit the fan. (He was also technically an NPC but they wanted me to be in character so often I just promoted him to PC status.)

@@Blitzwaffen one of the dmpcs I had follow my players was a female folk hero champion fighter, now an Oath of Heroism Paladin. I swear, it's only been two times I've had this DMPC had rolled a nat 20 in intimidation, and I wasnt even aiming for that. And shes not even proficient on it.

As a DM... I cringed hard at this. I feel for the players who had to suffer through this. It reminds me of moments when you were a kid and playing with that one friend who has to have the spotlight when playing legos, toy soldiers, etc. Those kids suck to play with cause it was all about them. Much like the DM and his DMPCs in OP’s story.
