    Steering geometry is your problem! Your tie rods should be straight and flat when at ride height, and when the wheels are straight. Your tie rods are angled forward when it is straight. This causes the leverage of the tires to overcome the steering rack!

      this!!!!! if his tie rods are pointing upwards at full droop, its even worse at ride height...hes getting constant bumpsteer bat each side because the tie rod is angled and pulls on the wheel on bumps causing dramatic toe changes with suspension travel..the lower you are, the worse it gets...get the tie rods/lower control arms level/flat at ride height as it was at factory ride height, and it will be dramatically better. e30s have a kit called "roll center/bump steer correction" kits that fix this exact issue when lowered a good amount, and that same concept would 100% work here!!!

    Great video as always. However, I have a couple things to say.
    First, I'd like to mention that you should always have your wheels professionally balanced every time you put new tires on them. There are small differences in the thickness of the rubber of every tire that can cause what was a perfectly balanced wheel to become both statically and dynamically imbalanced. Things like tread type, sidewall thickness, belt type, and rubber compound can differ drastically between two tires of the same size and style which make the tires themselves have different balance.
    Secondly, I'd recommend a more permanent, less hack-y solution to the steering rack movement. Especially if you plan to drive it daily and use it to get better at drifting. The u-bolt solution may have worked a treat, but didn't entirely eliminate the issue. You said the mounting points would be difficult to replicate, so why not just cut them out of an old miata and weld them to the truck's crossmember? While you're there, you can reassess your work on the strut towers with a more skilled eye and notice flaws you wouldn't have caught when you first made them. Just a suggestion though. If it works good enough for you, then it's your choice.

    • @retrotellephone
      @retrotellephone 4 года назад +7

      Cant believe no one else is calling this a shitty fix. Its not quite as bad as the riv-nut seat mounts, but it's up there.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage 4 года назад +2

      The big issue is with how this fix was "engineered" as he is trying to stop lateral movement with vertical straps. Since the U-bolts don't have a ridge or anything to sit in and only have a small contact area at the nuts to resist angular flex, it's really not the proper solution for the rack moving laterally. He would be better off strengthening the existing straps and mounting points, plus switching to poly bushings. Or just creating new solid straps entirely and eliminating the bushings. Obviously that would make it very harsh for regular driving though.

    I really think it just needs a third point of contact and not those u-bolts that could wear out the casing on the rack by rubbing up on it even microscopically. There's probably a much tighter tolerance in the chassis of the factory-made Miata than any of us could hope to achieve in our garage. I think you just need to accommodate for that by welding in a third hard mount, preferably mounted longitudinally to contrast the lateral forces acting on the steering rack.

    for the wheel balance issue come and make sure your rooms are not bent because I took my wheels to Costco to get balanced and they balance them and didn't say anything. Later I took it to a local shop and he showed me that my wheels were actually bent.

    I know that supercharging the truck would be fun but i think you should keep it as a seat time car

    nooo throw some shanghai swirly boys on that 1uz! just put the earlier model rods on it, you're gonna bend those rods quick with boost.

    Is the shacking you feel when you brake or all the time? It could be worn bearing or brakes. Could also be a bad balance

    I think you should mix two things you know very well, a miata, and a 1uz.

    You should put some rubber in between the ubolts to see if it will help some more

    I would definitely atleast throw some tac welds on the u bolt part where it's on the rack

    You could have started by changing those sloppy old rack bushes for urethane based ones, but I don't think that's what was causing the wobble. IMO you've just put a band-aid on the real problem, you should have all the geometry checked out on an alignment rack.
