    I was a young teenager on 11/26/69 when I watched my first NBA game. It immediately hooked me on basketball (and Walt Frazier in particular) was on . The Knicks were in Atlanta going for their 17th straight win which would tie the then NBA record. In the 3rd quarter the Knicks outscored the Hawks 38-12 with Clyde leading the way with at least half a dozen steals. I'm guessing because I haven't seen the game since. (If the tape still exists I'd love to watch it again. (MSG Vault material). The 1972-73 Knicks were amazing in that they knew how to win the big games. The Boston Celtics were 68-14 but the Knicks accounted for 4 of hose losses and beat Boston in the most thrilling playoff I've ever seen. The Knicks were the only team that knew how to beat those Milwaukee Bucks of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson, especially that game when the Knicks came back to win 87-86 by scoring the last 19 points in the final 5 minutes of the game. The smartest team I ever saw and I truly believe they'd still dominate today. Thank you, '72-73 Champion Knicks for all the excitement and showing everybody that using your smarts to win is the best way to win. The current team is playing the same way. Let's go Knicks!!

      Could they dominate today? Maybe. The problem is that it would be virtually impossible to assemble this team with the salary cap system today. No way can you have 5 hall of fame starters and a sixth one on your bench (not counting Phil Jackson because he's HOF as a coach) in today's league. Plus Dick Barnett who is not HOF but today would also probably have some kind of super max contract. Too expensive.
      There's probably a couple of other teams in history that would still dominate today but simply couldn't exist anymore with the salary cap system...

    I watched my first game during the 69-70 season. Once I saw Clyde do his magic, I was hooked, and have been hooked on him, especially, and the Knicks ever since. I was at the Garden on 2/25 specifically to see the '73 greats, the game against the Pelican was less important to me that night. It's a shame that so many walked out to buy beer when the last championship team that the Knicks have had was being honored. It's a shame at the lukewarm ovations that most of them got. The Garden should have run a short clip of each guy's dazzling contributions to the team before introducing him so that the young whippersnappers could have appreciated just how great they were and would have shown more respect. Ahmad Rashad shouldn't have been doing the introductions--that should have been Marv Albert's gig! Still was a great night for the Knicks all around, topped off by Derrick Rose's re-appearance on the court.

    I am so grateful that I got to see this team play. All the kids in my old neighborhood were Knick fans. And nobody cheered for teams belonging to other cities. The season before this one we lost the Lakers. But this year we were better prepared to beat them. Number 1 - Willis Reed was healthy. 2. We had Jerry Lucas a center who could knock down shots from downtown. 3. We had Earl The Pearl Monroe. The entire team was healthy and ready to go!!!!

    Wasn't Tom Riker #6 part of the team? He did play for the and had a 2.5 points per game average in 1972/73 in 14 games. Didn't play in the playoffs though. Did he not earn a ring? Can someone shed some light on this

    • @jdbaes
      @jdbaes Год назад +1

      Riker’s 14 games on the 72-73 Knicks were early in the season. Think he had a minor back issue, but regardless, he was demoted to the Knicks minor league affiliate for the rest of the season for either rehab or to get in playing shape or to work on his skills. He hadn’t been on the active roster for several months before the playoffs even began………..and the Knicks chose to make this tribute about the 12 players who were on the playoff roster. Not sure if he was voted a ring like they do in baseball for part timers but he had literally nothing to do with the Knicks’ success this season, and though he stuck around for two more years, he was a huge bust considering his hype coming out of South Carolina.
      RIP Willis Reed. 😔🏀🌈

    But why waste time on later era guys at all. And have Ahmad Rashad yack away.
    I would have had each of the 8 or so 73 players get the mic for a minute. 30 secs for the two sons. Let the participants speak, tell their stories, etc. Nice but bloated, overly controlled and somewhat disappointing. At least they'll have a good weekend together. But could have shared more of that with the fans.
