Even all these years later, I still say this is the best representation of a veteran having a flashback I've seen in cinema. Flashbacks aren't depression, even if they sometimes go hand in hand. What they are is something that comes out of nowhere even when you are otherwise happy.
I come back to this short around once a year when I need a good cry. I suppose I find it relatable for myself and others I know. The struggle of overcoming our programming and choosing happiness. The bird is the real MVP though. Even after witnessing Bastion breakdown into war mode, the bird just effortlessly forgives it and brings the first stick to rebuild. We need people like that in our lives, and we need to be that person for others.
The fascinating thing is that this isn't the first time that you've seen these Bastion robots. The Omnics. We saw them in the Honor and Glory video, fighting Reinhart and his people. The world of Overwatch is one that is struggling with fully sentient AI. The Honor and Glory cinematic took place during the first Omnic war, and in this one, we get that flashback to one of the major battles in that war. Bastion really is a lovely character, though. He's... effectively like an unexploded landmine. He was disabled, somehow, but then the bird reactivated him, and... if the bird hadn't come to him just then, he would have gone to that city and started a rampage for as long as he could have gotten away with, killing as many humans as he could. But he found... a new life for himself. Unlike an unexploded landmine, he was able to make the choice to be something other than what he was literally built and programmed to be, and that's really beautiful. Seriously, though, you need to see the Kiriko cinematic. That one is amazing.
Saw another breakdown a few years ago mentioning that for the most part he is walking from left to right inside the frame. Only to revert at the end and take the opposite direction.
Some things I always noticed that I think is well done is the subtlety of Bastion’s body language. Look at 4:48 you feel how sluggishly he’s walking bc he is sad. Or at 5:03 where he does that small head tilt. I think we all know that head movement as like a resignation. Like ugh well I guess I just gotta do this now. So subtle. I also love that the bird’s offering of the twig is basically the offering of an “olive branch.” A common choice in movies: vengeance or renewal.
Not only that, but his passive locomotion is different between Attack and Self-Awareness modes, his movements are sharper and more rigid when Bastion goes red, while when moving around normally he's more shifty, has a passive shakyness and his movements are notably smoother and more gentle, interpolating a lot of it to seem more natural and human.
Most of the Overwatch trailers introduce you to playable characters. You've seen similar robots in 'Honor & Glory'. I mostly know only the story of Overwatch from the trailers myself, but there was a conflict between AI robots and humanity. This was one of the AI robots. In the trailer this robot seems to have lost it's memory, so it learns, but it can also see that the war is over and the robots seemed to have lost as the city still stands. On top of that, their enemies were living beings, like the life it destroyed in the forest. Life like it's friend the bird.
Blizzards cinematics team is world class imo. They could absolutely make a full length film at the same quality as Pixar or Dreamworks. This is maybe the first time i ever cried for a robot. I legit teared up the first time i saw this, and there is 0 dialogue. Bastion has more character and personality than a lot of humanoid characters with actual dialogue and time to build up.
I haven't seen this short yet, it's beautiful. You're more than your programming, you don't have to do what is expected of you. Overcome it and follow what you know is right. It reminds me so much of the movie The Iron Giant which is still one of my favourite movies ever, if you enjoyed this short you'll love that movie too.
Also, no need to watch, but if you are interested in any (personal time) info, here is a short video on Metzen including his voice roles and yes Bastion. ruclips.net/video/lpd5tNuU7ro/видео.html

As a former Overwatch player/Bastion main, The Last Bastion always held a special place in my heart

I would say that this one and now the Kiriko video are great for when I need a good cry XD Still, this one really is just beautiful.
Me too

No dialogue but SO much is said in this short film. And you describe it all so well. Love this stuff you do!
and that's how we all came to love our little PTSD murderbot and want him to be happy in th eforest with their bird
It's cute until you remember what an absolute weapon of mass destruction bastion was in the early stages of OW.
fantastic choice. this is one of Blizzard's finest. it manages to be beautiful, and funny, and a poignant depiction of PTSD all at once.
No matter how many times I watch this, it always hits me right in the feels

The bird is like his relief animal. Bastion is basically a PTSD robot.
May you find happiness, Bastion and Ganymede 😊
The scene of him getting triggered and lighting up the forest will always hit so goddamn hard.
honestly this is some of the most beautiful non verbal storytelling I've ever seen... its up there with stuff like wall-e
Can't wait for your next Overwatch cinematic reaction, they are all amazing!

Happy to see you react to OW cinematics! You're in for a journey

Ohil talking about how wonderful and warm everything is....Me getting stressed knowing what's coming 😅
louder than a thousand words, indeed
soo good
Time to react to the Junker Queen cinematic!!
Goddamnit Blizzard is just SO GOOD at making cinematics!
Watch the rest of the series of the shorts it is worldbuilding one after another. Giving us so much more than the base facts.
Dragons is the most emotional cinematic in my opinion
It's the second most emotional for me, the first is "Honour and Glory"
I guess its very subjective. because this one hits me like a train compared to the rest.
Forged By Fire
How come he did not yet react to this???
Ah poor ptsd robot ):
You have to check out the Starcraft 2 cinematics
I hope you'll react to the The Witcher 3 ones too!
Also, no need to watch, but if you are interested in any (personal time) info, here is a short video on Metzen including his voice roles and yes Bastion. ruclips.net/video/lpd5tNuU7ro/видео.html
I wish all of Blizzard was as good as the art department
You need to watch "A new dawn" cinematic, leage of legends
