This continuing treatment of someone in their sixties as if they're someone in their 90s is annoying. Part time work is great, and a good way to keep in contact with society, and the fact that Mrs. Thompson is teaching computer skills two days a week tells me she does have a brain in there. Yet she is portrayed as a trembling little old woman who 'somehow' manages to think of what to do.
She teaches computer skills to seniors, for goodness sake!!! And she instinctively looked for clues in the package that Jack sent.

Please, PLEASE remember that people in their 60s are hardly fossils and treat them accordingly. Research current achievements in such as IT, the Sciences and Maths, and remember that there are hundreds of thousands of people out there living fulfilling lives.
P.S. I'm nearly 78, and the thought of this otherwise protagonist thinking and acting like she is saddens me.

No, reconciling with an abusive husband and father for a child’s sake is not good. The husband hurt the small boy and terrorised him and his mother, that man needs to be kept far away. The boy woukd be better associating with a good male teacher at sport or whatever.
You need to speak more quickly. This really drags, but is a good story. Please increase your dialog speed.
