    Is Language Unique To Humans
    www.bbc.com/future/story/20121...
“However, language is more than a process through which meaning is attached to words or short sentences. Language might be described as the ability to take a finite set of elements (such as words), and using a set of rules (grammar and syntax) to create infinite combinations, each of which is comprehensible. Given this definition, it is perhaps not surprising then that cognitive psychologists sometimes speak of a "grammar of action".”
Yes, We Can Communicate with Animals
    blogs.scientificamerican.com/...
“But I assure you, no dog (or ape) will ever learn words, lexigrams or gestures for “bacteria,” “economy” or “atom.” They may be able to hear or see the differences among them, but the concepts they represent are beyond their conceptual capacity. You can’t learn words for things you can’t understand.”
Chirps, whistles, clicks: Do any animals have a true ‘language’?
    www.washingtonpost.com/news/s...
“To be considered a true language, there are a few elements that are usually considered to be essential, says Kershenbaum. For one, it must be learned rather than instinctive - both whales and birds have this piece covered. For instance, killer whale calves learn a repertoire of calls from their mothers, and the sounds gradually evolve from erratic screams to adult-like pulsed calls and whistles.”

Exactly. At a fundamental level we all need things and communicate in order to get them. If you just want an answer to a question, that is still obtaining a reward for uttering the question. I cannot think of a single thing people say that doesn't in some way result in a reward. Even this comment seeks the 'reward' of agreement, feeling like others agree with a shared perspective (which is why you posted your statement too). If you don't expect anything to come of posting a comment, why comment? Your reward might even be entirely internal. Commenting might make people feel smart, even if they don't bother to look at responses to their comment. That is another reward. Just look at the phenomenon of trolls. LOL

  • @anonymousloner4480

Not one mention of alex the parrot and the talks of gorillas apes and dolphins greatly undermined how far we've already progressed there are dolphin trainers that taught dolphins a trick "language" and used the signal for "together" with the signal for "create" and the dolphins swam down together and came back with an entirely new trick that they hadn't been taught. There's an ape that talked about a dream he had in signlanguage and a memory he had of his mother being killed by poachers, an ape that when shown a picture book about a kitten asked for one and he was gentle with it. Alex the parrot that could talk verbally and would understand corrections like what is this?... showeeer yes but what is in the shower?.. waater like he understood what he was actually saying. We have already progressed well beyond the im doing a movement similar to you but with no meaning stage.

Funny thing is that animals do _communicate_ back, humans are over absorbed in blunt abstract symbolism that they are too miopic to any other form of interaction.
One time with my dog I saw something weird, and immediately we both looked at each other like "wtf??".
I noticed too that if I'm refraining or emotionally not wanting people to approach me, and they do anyway, he'll start growling at them.
My cats too. I never done this before, but I was sitting in my couch and my cat was just looking at me, I cleared the mess beside me and double tapped in the sofa sort of saying "come", and right after he hops to lay on my side.
Even bees (lol). I stopped killing flies and bees, I see them on a window for example, and gently without panicking (I was afraid of bees before) I just lead their way towards an open window, and surpisingly they fly straight and peacefully.
The other day I had a big ass moth inside my home (after googling I found out it was an Acherontia Atropos) so I remained calm and opened the window, i lift my arms sort of leading her outside by showing "not in my direction", and the moth gently started flying towards the exit. Whereas before for example, seeing a moth made me panick and grab my flip flops while they flew erratically all over the place.
The communication I'm talking about here is having an intention, and looking at the animal conveying what u want, hard to explain it better but this is done tru action and not thinking.
I swear to god next time I see this big moth I'm going to lift my hand and she'll land on my fingers. Do google Acherontia Atropos, the moth is huuge and looks like a bee, and has a skull in its back, nothing to be scared of right ^_^"
If u have a dog and u're close to him u should notice how intelligent animals really are. I dont think they have imagination/thinking like us obviously, but a lot of communication isn't done via symbolism or signs, but rather through common body language of fear / chillness.

    • @Maximus-k1
      @Maximus-k1 5 лет назад +15

Animals use imagination to map possible scenarios and plan how they might respond. Complex animals like mammals, reptiles, fish, etc. would most certainly need to be able to respond to new things, so I'd say that they all have the need and ability for imagination, even if in a limited scope.

    • @leilanipunanimania6815
      @leilanipunanimania6815 5 лет назад +18

I agree. As humans we tend to dismiss anything we don't understand or fear and not understanding the language of animals is no exception.
For example my Pomeranian, Jacob, has preferences just like a human does. Though he is perfectly capable of eating a large slice of his refrigerated Fresh Pet food loaf with his small narrow mouth, he will keep setting it down on the floor and then look at me until I cut it into smaller pieces then feed him dainty bits one by one.😂 He also has a doggy carseat in my expedition so when he gets in my friends' cars that have boosterseats he gets into it automatically upon entering the car.
My giant tortoise comes when called and knows that his heater has a safety feature that if flipped over will turn off in his house so when he gets too warm he will just flip it over or stick half of his body outside in the cool air while staying comfortable (kind of the equivalent to when humans get hot at night and stick one leg out of the covers.) 😂 They are both on my channel.

If we stop eating those farm animals, they will simply not exist. There might be a few in zoos, but that's it. Those animals exist in the numbers they do solely because we eat them.
If you had the choice to live a finite life, one that would end someday, you know not when, how or why, would you not choose to exist? Your only other choice is to never exist. Of course you would choose to exist. Indeed it is a choice you make every day that you don't commit suicide. I have to assume animals would make the same choice.

Is Meowing a sign of communication? Every cat owner will tell you, that they can decipher their cats meows. My cat will make a howling meow when she can't find me. She will do the same kinda noise when she has a toy. She will meow when she is hungry, but do a loud meow when in trouble. She will do a small low meow with her mouth shut, this is concern for me, and also when she wants attention. Why is nobody looking into this?

THE SIXEYE cats don’t meow to other cats, they learned to meow to humans, because they saw human baby’s make a high sound and get a lot of attention when they do it, they decided to learn to mimic that sound to get the same amount of attention, in my opinion that’s a great example of a smart animal learning to speak to us with our language, I really hope more people start researching cats since they have already shown the capability to learn and speak human language

Lemonish Potato to be precise, cats only speak like they do with us with kittens, as kittens are not developed enough to hear and speak like adults so adults need to meow loud and clear. Cats basically see us as big babies XD which makes sense, we do the same with someone who doesnt seem to understand our language, we speak louder, slower and more clearly

    • @Sixeye_
      @Sixeye_ 5 лет назад +8

That's what i was thinking. A person knows what the meowing means, and the cat knows what it means. I think this could be a sign of communications. Incredible animals. They watch and learn, then mimic that behavior. Just like when they hiss, would be them mimicking a snake, learning that snakes use this as a warning, watching how animals flee when they hear that sound, so they did the same. Just like how they learn to open doors, just by watching us. This mimic behavior could be them eventually mimicking our social language sounds. I think if humans destroy themselves, these incredible creatures will be the dominant species, and maybe continuing some of our traits. I think the lack of research on cats is due to the cats being arrogant, it takes longer to teach a cat than a dog. I looked after kittens everyday, leaning how they watch and mimicked their mother behavior. This mimicking behavior could be used to mimic sounds, and then kittens mimicking the same sounds, eventually turning into early communication.

THE SIXEYE I have 3 cats and a dog.. We mostly comunicate trough looks, sounds and body language like all/most animals. Well I learned all of this because I actually wanted to understand them better. When you do that It really opens your eyes to what our world is really like and why. Everything already has a meaning, most people are just to stupid/ignorant/lazy to understand the world around them, so they try to control every single aspect and change it for their benefit. I can just look at my dog and say/think stop in my head and she will, we are so in sync that she could tell what i want from her without even seeing my face sometimes. I would say this is superior to any talking and I wouldn't want to waste my time talking, when I can say a whole lot with just a look or a gesture.

A lot of people seem to think they’ll be able to talk to their dogs or cows but that unfortunately wouldn’t be the case. There is a reason they have chosen dolphins with that reason being that they are one of the few animals with enough intelligence that it might be possible to communicate with them. No matter what new technologies we develop we will never be able to talk to a cow without somehow substantially increasing its intelligence.

Dogs are fairly intelligent and can learn to associate words with actions and objects. Dogs are also quite emotional and can be very verbal when expressing fear, frustration, gratitude, love etc..
They're hierarchical understanding of the pack is similar to our "social class" or at least what our communities emerged from. I think that's why our two species have been such good companions over the millennia. Dogs understand and easily conform to the basic political dynamics of human interaction. I think that's why some people dislike cats; because cats are highly independent creatures and lack the group mentality.
The social, mental and physical limits of an animal will dictate what it communicates and how it goes about communicating. I think breeding and ownership of domestic pets needs to be taken way more seriously, more ambitiously. Families should actively strive to mentally stimulate they're pets and allow them to breed in order to pass vital hereditary information. I don't know why this isn't actively being pursued..
Wolves have been proven to be more intelligent than dogs. The mental regression of our pets is a shame and a result of the useless lives we put them through. I view owning a large mammalian animal for amusement as abuse.
Why are we looking for extraterrestrial life to form a Galactic Presence with when we can potentially elevate our fellow earthlings? Obviously this theory would take time. Dogs today are already being trained to assist the disabled and work with the police force.
So technically some dogs have jobs and are low-key functioning members of society. We need to look at their strengths and build upon them. Needs to happen, the future would be teeming with new philosophy and domestic pets wouldn't be such a disgrace

You can acclimate with animals approaching slowly and showing you are no threat especially if you offer food. You can do this with many animals particularly birds but I have done it with Yellow Jackets to get a close look at their nest without getting stung and there are some people that search for wild honey bee hives by offering bees food and tracing back their path to their hive.
The key to this is trust if humans have hurt animals before they aren't going to be as trusting as birds remember and at least in crows can pass on their grudges to the next generation. Animals are a lot smarter than we give them credit and when we exploit or mistreat them they grow wary or even learn to fear us making the largest barrier to mutual understanding be human greed and exploitation.

An important thing to realize and understand is that you cannot expect an animal that has been taken away from its mother right after birth to develop its own complex language. You have to go to social animals which have been living for generations together to find that. Somehow humans expect more from a 1 year old animal than from a 1 year old human baby. You aren't born with language, you learn it, it is something that developed over generations through interaction.

I bet you could teach a chimp how to determine whether a counter top is clean or not. that would be amazing.

Interesting topic! I find that a form of communication occurs once one learns and pays attention to an animal's behavior. Also, while direct, meaningful conversations may be a long way off (if even possible), it's amazing how much information can be shared simply by being patient and observant. And while exacts words may not be understood by an animal, sometimes the intonation of sounds by a human can connect with another species. For example, while a cat may not understand what I am saying, by using soft, gentle tones the cat will know I am not a threat. Super video!

Another idiot that did not listen to anything. You will never be able to speak to your food. Cattle etc are just that...food. Dolphins, Elephants, Octopus..., maybe Apes and Whales....that's about the only intelligent animals with anything more than instincts.

I believe in the video he mentions dogs and dogs are eaten in some countries… So my comment still stands, idiot!

Yeah, he said " Good dog" and specified, the dog definitely did not talk back....., but at least relative to you, you may consider dogs intelligent.

hey, long time watcher, first time commenter -- your channel rocks! however I feel that this video was pretty vague on details, wish you guys would have gone more into the language studies we've done with dolphins as we're currently a ways along mapping out their 'language'.

I can talk with animals all the time, we have conversations almost daily. They're actually rather inquisitive and intellectual creatures, in fact they're the ones who always remind me to take my medicine for my schizophrenia.

I don’t talk to animals, but I do understand certain ones. I can understand my cat. Even though he only speaks in “meows” and “Ows” It’s his tone that allows me to understand what he means. I know his mouth when he’s hungry and basically all he’s saying over and over is “feed me.” “Come on” “I’m hungry” “seriously” “feed me!” But it’s all in different meows and if I talk back to him with a “hold on” he’ll meow again in a more inpatient tone and the pattern continues.

there's a documentary called " raccoon nation" . in it they state if one raccoon finds food and goes home. he can tell the other raccoon through his chattering where the food is. he does not have to lead him to it. somehow that info was passed along through the chattering.

Prophet Muhammad Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him said: "By the One in-Whose Hand is my soul! The Hour will not be established until wild animals speak to people, and until the tip of a man's whip and the straps on his sandal (shoelace) speak to him and his thigh informs him of what occurred with his family after him."

Why not create a language for dolphins by creating an ultrasound language, raise a series of dolphins and attempt to teach them the ultrasound language, which we'll have a translation for

Listening to bat conversations could be pretty hilarious. They're argumentative grumpy spoiled mammals. Because of their dense colonies, they're always competing for space.

I already talk to my dog, he knows what a few words mean, like treat, and drive, dinner, walk, swim, sit, down.
He talks back, paws me when it’s dinner time, sits in the bath when he’s thirsty, gets all excited when I come home.

I believe that when we truly figure out this Quantum computer situation and that phase in evolution so too speak comes upon human kind that, that is when we will be able too figure out how too speak and or interact better with other species. Great video and first time I've seen this topic personally! Thank you Seeker for always keeping our human minds stoked!
