As someone who really enjoys Burley blends, Haunted Bookshop is one of the best anytime blends out there. It has a chocolaty, nutty, almost hazelnut flavour to it. It is really more of a Burley/Virginia blend as the Virginia tobacco in it really does cut some of the harshness of the Burley that a lot of cheaper blends have. It also burns really nicely, to the point where I almost never need to relight my pipe when smoking it.
When I got into piping, I thought Virginias were gonna be my jam. I just taste hot air. Burley has a beautiful nuttiness. That and English blends are now my jam
I tried Haunted Bookshop and it's one of the few blends that I've ever tried that I completely don't understand. To me it tasted exactly like a pet store smells, old sawdust and musky damp.
So, there is a funny thing with HB. When you open a fresh tin it can have an off-putting aroma that can carry over to taste. But, if you slap it in a sealed jar for 4-6 weeks, it suddenly smells incredible and has all the flavor you always hear people rave about. Without getting scientific about it, I suspect it benefits from a bit of oxidation. I LOVE HB and I never smoke it fresh from the tin. YMMV
Well, here in Florida the closest thing we have to "fall" is maybe a couple of weeks in February. The heat/humidity makes smoking outside almost unbearable for much of the year but ironically today it was only a high of 69. That's the first cooler day we've had since probably April, but by the weekend it's going to be back in the 80s. I envy those of you who can sit outside on a nice cool fall/winter day and smoke a pipe without sweating.
I've had Haunted Bookshop several times and love it! I've tried getting my hands on Soloni and keep missing it. Sells out fast! A favorite of mine is Ravenwood's Bison Burley from the Briar Fellowship. Absolutely delicious!
All great blends. Big and burley from C&D is a good transition from burley to latakia in the winter. It's got big burley flavor but also has latakia in it. It's rough around the edges in a good way and had decent nicotine as well. But if you smoke Irish flake you will be fine
I agree on the premise of summer=Virginia Fall=burley My go to being Prince Albert, my favorite being C&D eight state burley. Never had a bad bowl of PA.
Those are three great blends although Haunted Bookshop I have to go back and try again. HH ODF in the pipe sitting around a huge fire pit is Autumn for me! Thanks for sharing Bradley
Solani Aged Burley flake has changed in 2022. I think the topping is now just licorice and no longer cocoa. Also, it only uses white burleys. Have not tried it yet. HH Old Dark Fired is another perfect cold weather smoke. Enjoyed this video.
It has changed, and sadly not for the better. While still an excellent tobacco, it’s now far more earthy from the liquorice than it is nutty and “chocolately”. To my mind, this makes it completely different. Still tasty though.
Bradley, not being a big fan of Virginias, I have always smoked White Burley in the warmer months, which in the Ohio River Valley usually extend through October. After the first frost, the Latakia takes over. The only one of these three blends I've had is the Aged Burley Flake. Magnificent! But not as good as the original Edgeworth Slices, which were produced by Larus& Brother in Richmond, VA. Wessex claims that their Burley Slices is the original Richmond formula. Not by a long shot. Solani is the only thing out there that's even faintly reminiscent. Great video!
Lol, love the thumbnail and intro on this 🤣! Thanks for the fall suggestions, always been hesitant to try burley blends but that Solani sounds too interesting to pass on.
Heck yeah! Virginias in the summer, burley in the fall, heavy English blends in the winter. Now my bacci appreciation schedule is properly _seasonified_ ( o.o)
I put off burley blends for a while and once I tried them, I was hooked. Burley is my favorite tobacco now... Just got a tin of John Cotton's double pressed burley that I'm going to try this evening with some coffee.
A simple bowl of Carter Hall is my most common burley smoke. Simple, but very tasty. ODF, on the other hand, is possibly the most delicious burley blend, but it's a bit too strong for this Baggins. I enjoy it so much that turning green has on more than one occasion been my indicator to put the pipe down.
Nice intro! I know more about a hobby I don't participate in . . . burley blends in the Fall. . . . I think you could do a special X-mas season blend, too. Something with cloves in, perhaps.
Nice, sir. I’m a burley luvuh, and these blends are also in my top three. Haunted Bookshop is an all day blend. I especially like to add a bit more perique though.
Love the picks! Solani Aged Burley Flake is still my favorite all time burley blend. But I long to recapture the feeling I got from that first tin years ago. I could say the same thing about C&D's Briar Fox. HH Burley Flake is decent too.
😂 I loved the video intro Bradley. I knew you’d pick solani and Irish flake. I need to revisit haunted bookshop, I agree with some other comments, something hit me wrong that I didn’t like and I jarred it and stored in the cellar somewhere. Some C&D blends have something I don’t agree with and I haven’t been able to decipher exactly what that is. Nice shoutout to old Matches860 I liked his videos and insight, he really loved those burleys, he is definitely missed by the YTPC folks.
I would add in there one of my favorites briar fox, it would be in between solani and hbs on the burley boldness spectrum. For me, briar fox has just enough burley flavor to get all the good soft notes of burley while leaving out the rough flavors.
Went hiking out at Fragrance Lake last week in October... wearing shorts and sandals. It felt so so wrong. Well, at least we can be Fall "themed" if we can't be in fall for real! ;)
Great video as always! Are there any Burley based blends that either have a topping/casing that you like or perhaps a Burley blend that has Cavendish and or Virginia?
I actually think the Solani is more quintessential Burley, at least in the classic American Burley pipe tobacco sense. It really is close to Edgeworth and is kind of a dressed up Prince Albert. I see that they have dropped all pretense on the tin description and finally admitted it’s White Burley with a licorice topping. Which was and still is the classic casing added to Burley in every tobacco form. It’s funny that people always say they taste molasses when it’s really licorice
To anybody who would like to explore Burley blends I'd definitely suggest looking into Amphora Burley blend (very similar to Mc Barens HH Burley flake)and their Original Brown, high quality and fairly affordable priced too,
Great video, as always The Solani blend is a must for anyone wanting a good burley. Peterson too. I have yet to try Haunted Bookshop. HH Burley Flake from Mac Baren is a great one too. I also enjoyed Burley London Blend from MB. I'm not sure if its for everyone, since it has an obvious chocolate topping on it, but its not gloopy like a Cavendish blend, and the topping accents the burley flavor instead of masking it, imo.
I picked up some Haunted Bookshop Cake since fall is right around the corner. The krumble kake seems to round out the rough edges and it's a little sweeter than I remember. Still has that dry chalky cigar like aftertaste as the bowl progresses but is definitely pleasant when smoked with a lighter cadence.
I loved cigars before I loved pipes and both Aged Burley Flake and Haunted Bookshop are two of my personal favorites. ABF is what I recommend to cigar smokers who want to try a pipe. It has the nuttiness we enjoy but it is distinctly pipe tobacco, not just a cigar rolled into a pipe. Would like to try Irish Flake once I am able to get some.
A decent replacement when you can't find Solani ABF is Cobblestone Hiking. Not quite the same flavor since it doesn't have the "age", but the quality is really good, it's readily available and it's cheaper.
The Burleys I smoke the most of are Old Joe Krantz Blue, Haunted Bookshop and Morley’s Best - The first 2 I smoke all year round. I’ve yet to try Haunted Bookshop Cake - Have you tried this version of Haunted Bookshop?
Great videos! I was wondering, since I also live in Seattle, where do you buy your pipe tobaccos if we in Washington State can not order tobacco through the mail.
Is there a difference for english native speakers between fall and autumn? In spanish there's but one word for the season: "Otoño" (I get the falling leaves reference of Fall, I mean other than that).
Burley is not for everyone. If you are a Virginia lover and don't have much experience with Burleys you may want to go slow. High nic hit and different flavor profile. YMMV.
C&D Pegasus, and HH Burley Flake are my tops right now👏🏻
As someone who really enjoys Burley blends, Haunted Bookshop is one of the best anytime blends out there. It has a chocolaty, nutty, almost hazelnut flavour to it. It also burns really nicely, to the point where I almost never need to relight my pipe when smoking it.
It also has a lot of perique. I like it that way, though 👍
I want to like it so much more than I do, I just can't get into burley blends.
Try l j peretti amazing burley
When I got into piping, I thought Virginias were gonna be my jam. I just taste hot air. Burley has a beautiful nuttiness. That and English blends are now my jam
Absolutely nailed that intro!
I tried Haunted Bookshop and it's one of the few blends that I've ever tried that I completely don't understand. To me it tasted exactly like a pet store smells, old sawdust and musky damp.
Same. HB....meh.
I quite like it - but then again, I tend to like any blend that is full on in the flavour department.
So, there is a funny thing with HB. When you open a fresh tin it can have an off-putting aroma that can carry over to taste. But, if you slap it in a sealed jar for 4-6 weeks, it suddenly smells incredible and has all the flavor you always hear people rave about. @@andrewnicholson3448 Good to know. If I ever decide to give it another try I'll do just what you suggest. Thanks for the tip.

Solani ABF with a cup of coffee... gorgeous. Great baking spice flavor. Haunted Bookshop absolutely murdered me with nicotine though.
HH burley flake and Vauen Virginia flake no 14 for me. Love Solani’s aged Burley also.
All great blends. Big and burley from C&D is a good transition from burley to latakia in the winter. It's got big burley flavor but also has latakia in it. It's rough around the edges in a good way and had decent nicotine as well. But if you smoke Irish flake you will be fine
Great list. I go for Wessex burley slice Mac barren burley flake and c&d old joe krantz.
Love and smoke all three! These blends are the core of the Burley Kings! Great video ! Take no prisoners!
I agree on the premise of summer=Virginia
Fall=burley
My go to being Prince Albert, my favorite being C&D eight state burley.
Never had a bad bowl of PA.

Great Choices. The latest version of Eight State Burley is also a good one if you haven’t tried it. Don’t get the 2021 version. Get the 2022 version.
Thanks for the tip!

In ireland we have condor plug, it's as black as ebony ans sweet and beautiful, very like ready rub but burns cooler and a little sweeter taste
The intro took me back to reel-to-reel films in second grade.

My go to fall blend is GL Pease jackknife plug. The dark fired is a perfect match for the chill in the air.
Good choice!
If we can ever find solani!
You knocked it out of the park Bradley!! Excellent blends! I would also recommend Wessex Burley Flake. 👍😎👊
Great suggestion!

Agreed, great weather for burleys! MacBaren HH Burley Flake is a good one, similar to Solani ABF.
Agreed!

FIVE BROTHERS Burely At Its Best
I love the jumping spider
Great video! ABF is great. My favorite Burley is Mac Baren’s HH Burley Flake. The Amphora Kentucky is a very nice, milder Kentucky.
Love the picks! Solani Aged Burley Flake is still my favorite all time burley blend. But I long to recapture the feeling I got from that first tin years ago. I could say the same thing about C&D's Briar Fox. HH Burley Flake is decent too.

Burley Slice, Aged Burley, Vincent Manil
Went hiking out at Fragrance Lake last week in October... wearing shorts and sandals. It felt so so wrong. Well, at least we can be Fall "themed" if we can't be in fall for real! ;)

Well, Aged Burley Flake has a topping, but it's mild (at least the version I had back then).

It's still great, but not QUITE as great as it was.
Agreed 👍

Just smoked the last dregs of my last tin of Haunted Bookshop two days ago and I miss it already. Boo hoo! Going to try the cake version next.
Thoughts on Rattray's Stirling Flake vs Peterson's Irish Flake?
Haven't tried Stirling yet!
You’re the best Bradley.
Thanks for watching!

Not yet!
Hey Bradley, the package I sent you has arrived to your PO Box! Some Esoterica in there you havent reviewed yet and some other goodies!
Thanks! I'll try to head to the post office this weekend!
Burley blends do not improve with age, correct?
Not as much as Virginia blends in my experience.
Great videos! I was wondering, since I also live in Seattle, where do you buy your pipe tobaccos if we in Washington State can not order tobacco through the mail.
Helpful friends and family who live elsewhere.
Best burley L j peretti by far

They're interchangeable. "Fall" is probably more common in the USA.
hi brad, im just new to smoking and just want to ask whats that thing on the end of the pipe called?
The stem?
@@stuffandthingsyoutube no, the black thing on the end of the stem.
@@stuffandthingsyoutube rubber pipe bits, just watched it on your restoration video, thanks man (^_^)
i think you mean the bit. they sell rubber bits you can attach to make clenching easier, apparently.
