BUILDING BLUE CRAB TRAPS

I can't say this to many times, always consult your state and local trap regulations. These traps are built to conform to Florida regs in the Bay and Gulf county areas. The wire mesh I use is 16 gauge, 1.5 by 1.5 inch. I normally go around the bottom with rebar, but was out of 1/4 inch. The 1/2 inch is plenty heavy. Any reason why not to use zipties instead of the metal Js?

The zip ties can become brittle and break. This mostly happens when they are stored out of the water.
