What is the future of Armenia's geopolitical situation? | DW News

  • Armenia has been struggling to cope with the aftermath of the crisis. In just a matter of days, almost all of the enclave's population - ethnic Armenians numbering over 100,000 people - have fled to Armenia. There's anger there at the country's old ally Russia - for doing nothing to stop the Azerbaijani army from taking control of Nagorno-Karabakh. While some Armenians now hope to forge closer ties with Europe instead of Russia, their geopolitical situation leaves no easy answers.

Lesson for Armenia and others - DO NOT relay on Russia. Russia betrayed people of Nagorno-Karabakh , Russia betrayed its traditional ally Armenia. Russia preferred short term political / economical gain from selling own oil/gas to Europe under Azeri name and betrayed its century old ally Armenia.

It is too simple to give all the blame to Russia. We tend to forget that Azerbaijan was supported by Turkey, and Turkey is a Nato member. So I wouldn't blame Russia until we deal with our own shortcomings, Nato always tends to avoid its responsibility by pointing at others

As an Armenian, I believe that the idea of Armenia adopting a strategy similar to its neighbor, Georgia, which involves distancing itself from Russia and its alliances, has the potential to promote peace, stability, and economic development in the aftermath of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. However, I have concerns about whether our government possesses the necessary expertise and professionals to execute such a complex and long-term shift successfully. This endeavor would require meticulous planning, skillful diplomacy, and unwavering commitment to overcome the unique challenges and dynamics of our region.

With the Ukrainian war, Azerbaijani has become more importantly geopolitically because of its oil reserves and close relationship with Turkey, Both Russia, US and EU see relations with it as more important than Armenia, who now appear to have no close allies. The use of weapons systems from Turkey such as drones, were used to enable this victory in Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia didn't intervene because of the threat to the country itself given the changed geopolitical situation.

    • @TenTenJ

No they do not see their ties with Azerbaijan more importantly, they see Armenia AS importantly, if not more. If they considered Azerbaijan so important, they would not refuse Aliyev‘a request to include Erdogan in Granada. Azerbaijan is ruled by an petro-oligarch who is collaborating with Putin and Erdogan. Man can not have two masters, eventually one will force the other out. European leaders tolerate Aliyev and Erdogan because they are there but only for that reason. They do not trust them. But they back Armenia and their actions speak louder than your simple analysis.

But one thing is for sure, the Armenian people are ready for war. Azerbaijan's military is strong, but the Armenian peoples will is stronger. Most Armenians hate Russia and it’s influence, this current crisis happened because Armenia had a democratic coup and voted a pro-American leader, and Russians to punish Armenia gave the Turks a green light to do what they want. Just like they chose to punish Ukraine for turning pro-West a similar way, only difference it hasn’t worked in that case (yet) and that the West supports Ukraine while it barely even knows Armenia exists (outside of its leaders who sweet talk Armenia in peacetime but do noting when it needs help asides from political condemnation - not attacking you on this, it’s hard for the West to help but surely you could least sanction them).

      It’s a bit complex.
This a region Nagorno-Karabakh that is inside Azerbaijani territory, but it’s populated by ethnic Armenians for centuries. Actually given current events the correct term is “it _was_ populated by ethnic Armenians for centuries” as in effect an ethnic cleanse is happening whichever way you look at it.
In recent past, as in decades ago* , Nagorno-Karabakh yearned to be more independent to be a Republic. In previous ceasefires agreements Azerbaijan promised greater autonomy for the region but then U-turned.
*Nagorno-Karabakh yearned for independence and have own Republic back in USSR times, USSR couldn’t allow this and instead gave the territory to Azerbaijan.
Not all countries in UN recognize Nagorno-Karabakh as being part of Azerbaijan, some only accepted it as condition to stability of the region back when USSR gave this region to Azerbaijan.
But as we can see Azerbaijan is heavy handed (it is an authoritarian regime, very similar to Putin’s regime), the premise “stability of the region” is not warranted.

This is an interesting question, since it will depend on the will of Azerbaijan and Turkey to go far or not.
If Turkey and Azerbaijan decide that the war should better end there, it won't influence the others to take actions. Overall, Karabakh is internationally recognised as Azerbaijani, so it is just a matter of time if the region is about to be retaken by Baku.
However, if this means the kickstart of a new pan-Turkist imperialism, it'll be very different. With regard to this, it could lead to significant repercussions. With this regard, the West's unified response against an aggressive Russia should be a stark reminder for Turkey that no matter how powerful Turkey is, it has little sympathisers, and not even Israel will defend them. Meanwhile, both India and China are also watching, since they have their own resentments against both the Oghuz Turkic countries for backing Pakistan and Uyghurs, and will take opportunities to weaken Turkey as soon as possible. The Arab world, long scarred by the Ottoman rule, won't side with the Turks and Azerbaijanis, they remembered the execution of Arab intellectuals and independent fighters by the Ottomans.
But given pan-Turkist's history and recent publishing of Turkish nationalists about helping Azerbaijan to erase Armenia's existence, I think they will go at length. And Putin helped enabling that as an exchange to overcome sanctions.

The problems main reason was created by Stalin. He planted the problem. In the history, Karabakh have been Turkish land. After the 1828 Turk-Russo War, so many people was migrated mutually. Especially The Armenians were placed around of Erivan. Before this war Erivan was a Turkish city and it name was Revan. After this war, there was a lot of population movements. It should not be forgotten that according to the first Russian-held census of 1823, conducted by Russian officials Yermolov and Mogilevsky, Shusha had 1,111 (72.5%) Azerbaijani families and 421 (27.5%) Armenian families. The census of 1897 showed 25,656 inhabitants, 56.5% of them Armenian and 43.2% Azerbaijani. As you see, this region was Armenianized. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Armenia has been a Russian colony. Every politicians, especially come from Karabakh, got involved in corruption, didn't think about Armenians poorality and were Pro-Russian. This brought nothing but poverty to Armenia. Yes, Armenia could unfairly hold Karabakh that way. I think Pashinyan would like to change Armenians destiny. He wanted to get rid of the Russian yoke. Absoluetly Putin have left him but sooner or later the Turks would take back Karabakh. Maybe despite Putin. The Turks gained back Karabakh even though Russians(Putin). Empty words of Pro-Russian politicians like Kocharian or Sargsyan do not help Armenians. Open the Zangezur corridor, sign the peace agreement and then Turkey will open borders to Armenia. Neither Iran nor any other country can give you wealth. If the Rusophiles come to power again, Armenia's poverty and isolation will continue. There is blood between us. We have done very bad things to each other throughout history. But we can still live in PEACE.

Nagorno-Karabakh is Azeri land and only politicians seeking votes of large Armeni communities in the West could say otherwise. Armenia is one of the few situations where the country is poor, underdeveloped while Armenians outside of the country tend to be very wealthy and successful. But the thing is Azerbaijan even told Armenians to stay in the Nagorno-Karabakh Karabakh if they accept the Azerbaijani citizenship and could be integrated since Karabakh is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. Armenians however left but some stayed hopefully no more wars happens and Azerbaijan keeps it’s internationally recognized territories. I doubt that any Turkish state will push and start a war with Armenia itself since then it’s an actual war and not reclaiming the land back as Azerbaijan did and other countries might get involved.

The only hope that Armenia has of stopping the Turkic nations surrounding it from completing the genocide is to make themselves useful to the Americans while not offending Iran. This could be achieved by removing the Russians based in Armenia and replacing them with US military. By having US military based in Armenia the importance of the US bases in Turkey will be significantly reduced. Turkey has been demonstrating that it is not a good fit for NATO or the EU.

Requires just one decision to close the airspace around Armenia. US cannot afford to anger Türkiye more than it has now. Just supporting PKK in the south was enough. Armenia will cost too much for US or anybody else while offering so little. Having good relations with Azerbaijan is much more feasible and improves the relations with Türkiye while granting access to all Central Asia if US goes for Azerbaijan if it comes to that.
Armenians need to be smart, accept the reality and negotiate accordingly and become a part of what’s going on around them.

They chose to align with the Iran-Russia Axis against Turkey-Azerbaijan-Georgia, which are closer to Western countries. Turkey has a free trade agreement and visum-free travel with Georgia and excellent relations with Azerbaijan, but Armenia just chose to not have a piece from the pie. Everyone knows how the Armenians helped the Russians in their attack on Georgia. As for the democracy that Armenia aspires to.
