- By 1989 Terry was suffering the cruelty of this horrendous disease whilst living in poverty. This harrowing footage highlights his awful plight. Broadcaster and writer Richard Hope-Hawkins organised a visit from an ITV news crew in the hope of making the public and the media aware of Terry's battle.
Cannot believe that was Terry Thomas. The actor who brightened my childhood with his hilarious performances. I wanted to speak like he did. I wanted to make everyone laugh like he did. Bless you sir. and thank you for the joy.
Even as a child he made me laugh when he was in the movie "Tom Thumb" the other villain was Peter Sellers, what giants of their craft
How tragic. But his willingness to make public his struggle helped raise awareness of this disease. Rest in peace. he left a wonderful legacy
EVERYONE WATCHING THIS DON'T WORRY! THERE WAS A HAPPY ENDING! THERE WAS A HUGE CONCERT FOR HIM WITH PEOPLE LIKE PHIL COLLINS AND MICHAEL CAINE AND THEY RAISED SO MUCH MONEY FOR TERRY AND PARKINSON'S DISEASE IN GENERAL. HE WAS ABLE TO MOVE INTO A NURSING HOME AND HE DIED THERE, BUT HE DIED IN WAYYYY BETER CONDITIONS THEN THE ONES HERE IN THIS VIDEO. This video made me terribly sad but I just read this so I hope this will save everyone's day.
thanks l devised the show
And God bless you for it ! I know that's true as I have " Bounder " the McCann biography, highly recommended to all TT fans. You did a wonderful job. I also have a short anecdote. A very young Richard Briers went to TT, they were related, and said he wanted to become an actor. TT said " Absolutely splendid idea old boy...........but you'll have to get some voice coaching, as you have one or two vocaaall maannerism's..............Thanks again RHH !
Richard Hope-Hawkins you basically saved his life! Thank you so much!
thank you for sharing he was a talented man it was hard seeing him or any one like this
Barney Os. Thank you sincerely for that very thoughtful gesture .appreciated
love that man, he was always part of my childhood. but when I miss him, I can always find him in film and feel safe and small again on any given cold wet Sunday afternoon. R.I.P Terry Thomas; thank you.
I still remember him in the movie "How To Murder Your Wife" with Jack Lemmon. He didn't play the usual high class cad, but a gentleman's gentleman. He was perfect in the part. We lost a gem of an actor when he passed.
There are two videos on youtube i regret watching. The first showed Tommy cooper passing away on stage and the second is this video. I didn't know this was how he was at the end. It's heart breaking :( The sad thing is this is happening all over the country today and little to nothing is being done about it :( R.I.P.
Very sad indeed
Adam Warren he did get his own concert and moved out of poverty and into a nursing home though... he sadly died shortly afterwards
I FULLY AGREE WITH YOU.
Thanks - I read your comment and stopped the video in time.
@Guy Sky yes just as there will always be the fortunate few with great health and hardly get ill , luck ,he earned his wealth and spent for good or bad but his to do as wish not up to us to tell him how to spend it just as high earners in society we don't tell them how to spend ,its all because he was high profile ,he was just unlucky to get this horrible disease it totally floored me seeing this years later how he went if I had known I would have given my last to help
Terry Thomas was superb. I have a close friend who is now dealing with Parkinson's.... it rips your heart out to see someone fade so quickly.
Absolutely awful. He will never be forgotten. RIP and God Bless.
This is heartbreaking to watch. I had just watched him in Make mine Mink when he was at his best. A sad end for a national treasure but he has left us a great legacy of his films to enjoy. RIP Terry Thomas you were brilliant!!
Harrowing. For anyone to berate Terry or any other individual from any walk of life, suffering in this way, is a damned disgrace. Shame on anyone with that attitude. You are not worthy of your status as a human being...
I don't understand it, My Mum has Parkinson and she is eligible for a really great nursing home with round the clock { excellent } care with great food and comfortable clean surroundings, it wasnt THAT long ago poor Terry had this awful disease?
Hear Hear.
Heartbreaking to see, I'm only 26 but have adored him in the films he was in. Brilliantly funny and extremely talented. It's just proof that no matter who you are what kind of success you achieve it can all be taken from you.
Out of order thing to say about a genuinely kind man who had fallen on hard times, where is your compassion for him as a human being
I loved this Gent, but if I'm not mistaken after seeing this on the news, old friends and especially Jack Douglas (from the Carry on films) organised a benefit gig for him and raised enough money for Terry to go into a nursing home and be looked after untill his death nearly a year later. Well done Jack and to you Terry......I SAAAAY! Thankyou x
It just about sums up this country , a true genius of the screen left to be humiliated like this , i know they had a big fund raising event for him but my point is , it should never have come this in the first place.
That's England for you.
@@rawbacon Yes, what a shit country. We can't get anything right can we. Pretty much every country on the planet does everything better than us.
A truly great British actor. Gut wrenching to watch this footage of his last months alive. A legend, always.
This is so sad, I remember this many years ago on TV. Poor Terry heartbreaking story. I did hear all his money was squeezed out of him over many years by so-called friends.
RIP Terry Thomas, you were to good for this world.
Not from what I've read in his biography. He grew desperate and spent his money on specialists, second, third and fourth opinions at the finest private practises, and even in the end quack remedies. Then when he was too ill to take care of his finances himself, it fell to his wife who wasn't particularly skilled in that department.
Just been watching "School For Scoundrels" I had forgotten how really funny Terry
Thomas was, playing the stereo-typical stiff upper lipped English gent. I have just
stumbled across this clip, and I am really saddened Mr Thomas ended up this way.
he died the following year (1990) r.i.p. Mr Thomas (You may be gone, but not
forgotten)
Gary Dunn Yes I saw that this morning as well.Great film and great acting.
kevin heming Yeah, such a shame that he died in such poverty, and in such a debilitating way. He and hiscontemporaries were from a different, more gentile generation. Sadly, the likes of which we will never seeagain. r.i.p. Mr Thomas ( You deserved a Knighthood for your contribution to British Cinema)
Gary Dunn I remember my Dad taking me to the pictures to see Tom Thumb in 1958 when I was five.Terry Thomas was in the film and I admired him from then on.
+Gary Dunn Yes, I just watched that film. I loved it when I was younger. This is so sad
Every film I saw him in he mastered, I love him in " I'm all right jack" and he only has a support part lol,
For me It was "It's a mad mad mad mad world {phew} when he and the American are fighting, Terry shouts and spits "SO IT's Fisticuffs your wanting is it!, of course they are both cowardly lol { I'm laughing typing it } Also Those Magnificent Men" when he is about to go and beat up the American and he pauses and says to his butler "are you SURE he's smaller than me" it is often said but rarely true, he was a classic
I had no idea that he ended his days like this, so very sad. RIP Terry
BLASTED! Terry-Thomas what a beloved great actor. Impeccable timing on every line.
I never knew poor terry ended up like that. How could such a great talent and once wealthy self made man end up in that horrible situation. The courage and devotion of his wife is awe inspiring R.I.P. terry you were truly a one off.
TT I love you man . Miss you very much. Your are the greatest ✨
god bless you Terry Thomas you one in a million!!!
My thoughts exactly.
One of the British greats in my mind. His movies certainly injected a great deal of humour into my childhood. Perhaps this is why I'm not as bitter as other posters.
Terry was a riot! His cadence, delivery and timing: Iconic.
such a good bloke, grew up watching and admiring this wonderful talented man.
God Bless Terry Thomas......he made me laugh.
Terry Thomas gave everyone such laughter a pure genius RIP💕
And let’s not forget Phil Collins who really helped Terry towards the end of his life 😢
Very sad to see a man who brought laughter to millions in such a state.
My father died of this disease. It is as bad as it gets. A real drip-drip-drip slow torture. He looked worse than this before he passed. Hard though it may be to imagine.
Thank you - That visit with Thorley Walters did indeed change my life
A wonderfully talented man and life been as it is it can be cruel to the point of excruciating. My parents died in horrible ways and just seeing yet another human suffering with indignity in such a way is heartbreaking. So pleased Caine , Collins and others helped him at his difficult time. GBY
So Sad, an incredible actor with impeccable comic timing (those magnificent men in their flying machines with eric sykes was just brilliant) also shows how awful a disease like parkinson's can ravage any human being. God bless him .
He was beloved actor it is hard to believe this situation of his health..so sad ...he will be remain in our memories...
Poor guy, that was his last Christmas as well :(
***** So sad.He brought so much fun and ended up like this.
kevin heming
its terrible :(
***** I thought there was a society that looked after ill or hard up actors.Obviously not.At least his wife seemed very caring.
kevin heming
Well I know the place where this was filmed, it is a home for retired actors/TV celebs and it's on Ducks Hill Lane between Northwood and Ruislip.
They do occasonally have charity drives/events to get some of the less well off stars a place there. But I think there's a misconception that if you're a celeb, you must obviously be a millionaire. so that puts people off donating.
kevin heming Isn't that the same place Richard O'Sullivan ended up. I love all these good old comedy actorsof yesteryear. They are far better than the so called talent we have today.
Like many people I was horrified when the story first broke, I'm so glad the fund was set up and at least he was far better off in the time he had left
but this should never have been aloud to happen. Terry gave us all such fun in his lifetime and now his devoted wife is an inspiration to ALL of us of how to truly love someone for better and for worse, in sickness and in health. Bless them both
Oh no, it just shows, how life can really slap you down :(
That flat wasn't fit for a dog.
God bless you, sir. Your comic genius brightened our lives; you will remain forever as we saw you in your movies.
That is so sad, and well done to Bob Mpnkhouse for his generosity.
It’s so sad getting old
I really think this footage should not have been televised. I mean, would Terry-Thomas want his fans and admirers to see him in such a state? I know I wouldn't. I see that the media is intrusive even in England. Just look at the guy! Frail, dying, can barely even move. He looks miserable. Why would his family let these news crews film him? Why would people want to see him like that? Just leave him and his family alone. We don't want to see such a wonderful, gifted, talented and hilarious man dying. At least back in 1956 when Oliver Hardy had a stroke that claimed his life a year later, there weren't news crews and cameras all over him and his wife. They left them alone. They should've done the same for Mr. and Mrs. Thomas.
thanks to this footage and other efforts money was raised to support him and his wife through the last part of his life. I don't think the aim was at allvto intrude but to raise awareness. his wife consented to the interview, and this raised the profile of those suffering from Parkinson's. it is very difficult to watch it I admit, it's terribly sad. there's some longer footage somewhere about his struggle with Parkinson's, it's worth seeing.
ExplorerDS6789 it's hard to watch, but his family obviously agreed to do it. Therefore not media intrusion in a legal sense
I believe Roger Moore searched for him and found him.
So very sad.. Echoing other who ahve commented before me, well done Bob Monkhouse for his generosity.Loved Terry-Thomas films... how come he wasn't Knighted?!
First time I saw this, even though I had known of it for man years. Horrible, frightening and very sad.
Poor babe, bless his heart.
God bless him. He was one of the best. And kudos to all of those who helped him recover his life and dignity.
What a great actor and so sad.
Eric Schoeters Benny hill
That was Heartbreaking,
Best scene ever was "school for scoundrels" when he's playing tennis I've watched that bit many many times and still lol
dcwtl “Hard cheese!” 😂
He looked quite young for his age, but its very sad seeing him ill in this way.God bless you Terry
What a damn shame. Goes to show you that no matter how far you go, you can fall. I'll never forget his memorable performance in It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. RIP Terry.
So sad, they don't make them like that anymore... R.i.p x
You Sir, will always be in my prayers for bringing so much joy and laughter in so many peoples lives, we miss you so much rest in peace and may the good Lord Bless you with Devine Showers.Amen OM Shanti, Shanti, Shanti.
I didn't watch this as soon as I saw him. I'll remember him as he was in the film's. A lovable bounder
It's so sad, that a man who we love so much on screen has ended up like this. Rip Terry
anxxx...nm
Absolutely heart-breaking - Terry-Thomas was a true legend, and this isn't meant as flattery. He was a true gentleman, loved by everyone who knew him, and always passed over the funniest lines to other people in his shows if he thought it would make the act and performer look better.
The good news is that a charity fund-raising event was set up by Richard Hope-Hawkins and Jack Douglas, and Terry lived the end of his life in a comfortable nursing home.
RIP Thomas Terry Hoar Stevens
What a sad sight to see this .A great actor ,loved him in school for scoundrels.
That is awful- how sad! I am wishing I had not seen this now. I don't know how he could end up like that
A great actor of my childhood so sad to see his demise ....RIP now you're free of this terrible disease.....
"...and i don't think that personal rancor is going to help the situation....if i may say so."
+anonov1 YESSS! that was one line that stuck with me...I believe it was a line from "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World..:) wonderful movie, with a lot of talent and laughs!!!!
Still love Terry Thomas . Good night good man.
Terry was the best. he was so funny and naturally so
I think they were proud people who lost touch with their showbiz friends, though when this story came out a gala show was quickly arranged in order to help the couple in what little time Terry had left. sad indeed..
what a cruel disease, terry will always be remembered RIP TERRY
Bro I can't watch this while I'm crying 😭😭😭😭
Terry Thomas gave so much to entertain us throughout the years & his Landlord threatened to evict him, some people are animals
Very very sad for a lovely man. God blesshim.
This is a good example of why you need to put money aside for a rainy day: you never know what the future holds.
Poor Terry, he was wonderful, his monolog in the movie Its a mad world about American women and bra's was a hoot. He was an original.
So sad...
Very sad.
Dear old Terry, I do enjoy his films.
he was just brilliant.
tragic to see the great man like this,
Poor Terry, he was amazing in Tom Thumb
broke my heart
TERRY THOMAS TT.
WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST..A REAL CLASS ACT.
TERRY WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
LONG LIVE TT...
Very sad, a funny guy. He always reminded me of Peter Ustinov in that he was a genuinely witty guy with lots of funny anecdotal stories to tell. RIP Terry
Pure Horror!
I love his films, he was a great actor who gave us laughter and hapiness.
He was a national treasure. You would think the queen would have stepped in to make sure he never got to this state.
amazing, all the poor unfortunate people in the world and this rich man who knew life's better side gets a bit of bad luck and we take up a huge collection for him. Simply amazing! What about those folks just as bad off who are not famous?
They die horribly, like my mother and her two sisters who had to rely on 'state care' and who suffrered the consequences.
shame on the news, for showing him like this.
Poor guy, I loved him in the movie "Vault of Horror"
Very funny archetypal and quintessential English comedy actor of that period- thanks for making me laugh TT!!
US is no better in treating their celebrites as well...Terry was at least not an alcoholic or drug user. He should've had tributes dedicated to him in Universities, etc so he can cash in on his failing fortune. So sad..RIP....
God Bless his wonderful wife, RHH and the others who came to his aid. Heroes all.
"What we do in life, echoes in eternity" so you will be looked after, good people.
Rest assured.
Parkinsons is a nasty strike for any one.
Terry Thomas, once a great cad then a great shame.
The poor ,poor man,, may he rest in peace.
how sad this awful disease. he was only 78
So sad.... RIP Terry
His accountants must have been an absolute shower!
Yeah, I bet they were.
heart-breaking rip Mr Thomes
He is recognizable. How did they not save for retirement? So very tragic. STUPENDOUS wife. He chose wisely.
How very, very sad to watch. The demise of such a great man to end his days like that. His wife and him were living a terrible existence, shame on the so called film community for not helping one of there's more. I was also astounded by the information that Bob Monkhouse had donated £1000 to a fund for Terry. I would have been too embarrassed to put my name to such a poor contribution if I was as wealthy.
I look at him and make me very sorry, this happend 24 years ago.
I think that the actorss need to have an insurance to prevent this unlike situations or any other.
Very sad. A real shame he ended his life like this.
Why do we let our famous people end up like this so sad to see,God rest his soul..He was a national treasure..Shame on the home that wanted to evict him..
I remember how harrowing this footage was when it first came to light back then, still very shocking & upsetting to see it again.
Terry Thomas was a true British legend, he was a total one off, so sad he ended up living his life like that.
This Country has a lot to answer for at times ...
No loyalty to the likes of TT who have given us so much over the years,
USA value their Stars & heritage, not like us Brits, we forget them & pull their houses down, even when they have a blue plaque, very sad
not deserve this , he was gem of a man
Holy Cr*p.... how could this have happened to such a great comic genius ??
This intereview should be shown parkinson's disease cruel and wretched but because of this interview thye world took notice money raised and Terry-Thomas was placed in a lovely nursing home. Some many artistes helped him when aware of his plight
What happened to his wife?
they dont get better. people with alzheimers adn parkinsons just get worse and take down their carers with them...carers need as much if not more caring too and some time away from the patient or help financially....because you can hope all you want they only get worse..there is no cure
