What is development? Is a video series that aims to plug into contemporary debates and discourses, and to ask current, timely and important questions within international development. Our world faces unprecedented disruptions and shocks. They pose risks but also present opportunities to transform approaches in how we tackle global challenges. The questions the series seeks to address are guided by the IDS Strategy 2020-2025
    (opendocs.ids.ac.uk/opendocs/h...)
And the IDS commitments on: upholding climate and environmental justice; reducing extreme inequities; fostering healthy and fulfilling lives; and nurturing inclusive, democratic, and accountable societies. While the series aims to look at many of the global challenges that we are facing, it also points towards much of the research and learning that is being conducted at IDS in these areas and how they can, ultimately, impact upon the world.

When the Nobel prize winner Milton Friedman's philosophy of economics was embraced by Thatcher and Reagan, the world changed. The focus of society moved to put shareholder dividends, company profits and CEO's bonuses as the principal focus of society. This resulted in the poisoning of the planet for profit, and the deaths of an untold number of people.
All this was aided by politicians, especially ones who retired and became lobbyists who were then able to write the wording of the legislation, others who moved onto the boards of directors in huge companies, even though they had little experience in business affairs, but merely for the unlisted phone and email details of members or influential movers and shakers in the corridors of power.
If we don't stop this rampant, predatory capitalism the various mega-corporation will keep on merging and exercising more control.

Wasn't Grenfell a building owned by the government? Also hasn't poverty curtailed globally since the 80s? This is very one sided

      In the past 250 years
Global poverty has disappeared at a rate that seems impossible.
It’s even crazier if you make the graph 1020-2020AD.

Whats it for a normal human that struggles to live their life without bad anywhere near them... . What's the point if corporate rule or middle man eat and spit the farmers sweat. Or communism or privitaization has occured actually. Or if natural resources can give benefit to today's poverty eradication or corrupt make that politics or destroy nature itself. There is no right or wrong their is only authority with good motives and terribly corrupt that are not criminalised...

You can move to north korea...no neoliberalism there. Even china has adopted neoliberal policies and has openned its market. There is no perfect policy anywhere. Neoliberalism is not perfect...but it beats the others.
