    liege i revisit time and again. i had the pleasure of meeting Richard back in 83 or 84 when he was in a band with David surkamp of Pavlov's dog. called " HI - FI ". when they played here in Calgary. good power pop. Cheers!

    Wonderful job with this one Mike. I did not know that Fairport was still out there doing shows. They were one of the bands that were on the bill at Knebworth Park in 1979 as a backup to Led Zeppelin. They were all big Fairport fans~

      Hi Rob! I once saw Robert Plant doing a couple of songs with Fairport at the Cropredy festival. He and John Bonham had been in the Band of Joy in the '60s with Fairport's Dave Pegg. A lot of history between those bands. Thanks for watching!

    Hi Michael, great video. Love Fairport Convention… just an amazingly inventive band. Sandy‘s voice is beautiful. Side 1 of Liege & Lief is perfect and side 2 isn’t half bad either. Thanks for the deep dive. Cheers, Jack

    Hi Michael! WOW what a great and informative vid. I remember seeing them opening for Mott The Hoople in -72. "Peggy" was the new boy (and I was just a kid...😊)
    All the best from Stockholm...✌️😃

      Very cool! I never got to see them in the '70s, but saw the later version of the band many times. Thanks for watching!

    Michael, one of your best just due to subject matter. Love this period of UK folk. I have even gone backwards and delved into A. L. Lloyd and Ewen MacColl, and some of their collections of Child ballads. Thanks, Chris

    I just listened to this LP last week, and found a used copy of 'Full House' right behind you there, as I had never heard it. Will now listen to both again, thanks as always, Michael.

      Both terrific albums. Full House does suffer from not having Sandy, but what an epic it has in "Sloth"! Thanks for watching!

      @@michaelpdawson You're welcome. I just gave 'Sloth' a couple of listens. It's the song the Grateful Dead always wanted to do, but never quite made it.

    Professor Dawson, what a wonderful video. I use to have this album but never got into it. You added such a great back story to the album. I love hearing g about how albums come together and then information about the songs. This was extremely informative and enjoyable. Lot of songs about nudity and sex lol.

      They didn't have Playboy in those days, so they put it in the songs.

    Thanks for posting this worthy analysis of a very fine LP, Michael. I have the original UK pressing. In fact, I saw one go at auction for a staggering £165 only yesterday. They were a great band in their heyday and I was lucky enough to see them when they reformed with Simon Nicol, Dave Swarbrick, Dave Pegg and Bruce Rowland. Sadly, their last drummer, Gerry Conway we lost a few months back.

      Ouch, I didn't know originals were so pricy! That late '70s lineup you mention was cool because they went back to the traditional material. Bonny Bunch of Roses I thought was a particularly great album. Yes, sad that Gerry Conway has passed. Thanks for watching!

      The house where Fairport worked on Liege and Lief was in a place called Farley Chamberlayne. So if you live near there, maybe you've seen it! Thanks much for watching.

    Michael, I only have two Fairport Confusion recordings, ''Unhalfbricking'' and '' Liege And Lief''. I dig them both, but ''Liege And Lief'' might be more engaging, I love the guitar on ''Tam Lin''. Richard and Linda Thompson's ''Shoot Out The Lights'' is my favorite album by them.

    • @michaelpdawson
      @michaelpdawson  Месяц назад +1

      The only fault with Unhalfbricking, I think, is possibly one too many Dylan songs. Shoot Out the Lights is a great one, but then you can't go wrong with Richard. The man is a songwriting genius and a guitar wizard. Thanks as always for watching!
