Just read his wiki page and be amazed. Dude went from a Nazi killing badass to one of the most iconic actors of all time, and did so much more in between. God bless this man. Rest in Peace to the great Sir Christopher Lee.
In my opinion, Christopher Lee and Ian Mckellen can exchange their own role of Saruman and Gandalf respectively, as they are both great actor with some powerful 'aura' and voice of the wise and evil. However, due to Christopher's age, it is difficult for him to involve in so many actions like Ian did (I know they have someone to perform the stunt), so they settle with their own role that we see in the movie. But the most important thing is that they play their role very well.
In the Hobbit films, he was so frail that he did his shooting from London, and was mostly seated. He had to act to a camera, since the rest of the cast was in NZ.
I thought he would talk about it here, but he took the role of Saruman once McKellon was interested in Gandalf because he said "He will be better than I"

Using The Stone of Orthanc didn’t make him evil, just took him under control of Sauron. Even after he believed they will rule Middle Earth together if they will win the war.
Sauron’s power over people was to make them despair. He projected a kind of overwhelming vision of the future to convince anyone that resistance is foolish. A deception to be sure, but a powerful one to the “wise” such as Saruman and Denethor, individuals who didn’t hold to their knowledge with humility, making them unable to see the arrogance at the heart of their despair.
Saruman was maia to aule, the valar who made the dwarves and was the god of craft and industry. I believe sauron was also. They both had great love of creating new things but i think Tolkien believed that industry was a sure road to evil, probably influenced by growing up in Birmingham in the industrial revolution. But saruman was already well on the way to evil before the palantir. I believe he attempted making his own rings of power and ultimately had no intention of even giving the ring to sauron had he ever found it. The way Lee just throws down both of the two Blue Wizards’ actual names off the top of his head is just mind boggling. The absolute Legend new his material.
Sir Christopher Lee is such a class act. A true personification of the hero, the gentleman and the wise man. From his days fighting in ww2 to his acting career... brilliance every step of the way. Today's society no longer produce people like him.
Eric Roberts is listed as an actor in 324 feature films. Never heard of him before either. He's 61 years old, so I guess he could add 100 more. Then there's Prem Nazir, actor in 528 Indian feature films.
Such an incredible man, soldier, and actor. He will forever be missed. I’d love for a documentary about his life, and I mean a full in-depth look at everything.
12 years later, I doubt anybody will read this comment, but the progression of Saruman's "evilness" is quite interesting. How Saruman slowly got corrupted and eventually lost the battle of wills against Sauron via tha Palantír: Jealousy of Gandalf: Saruman volunteered to go to Middle-Earth and was sort of the leader of the gang, but Gandalf was asked with a quote "not the third" implying Gandalf is at least equal to Saruman. Once they arrived in the havens (Middle-Earth), Cirdan the shipwright welcomed them normally, but when Gandalf arrived a bit later: Cirdan recognized that Gandalf was meant for greatness and even gave him his elven ring of power. When the Wise as group was established by Galadriel (Saruman, Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond, Cirdan, Celeborn), Galadriel wanted Gandalf to lead the group instead of Saruman. Saruman was proud, but proud and being humiliated are not opposites; everytime that the wise people recognized Gandalf over Saruman, it was a blow to him. So Saruman needed to be greater, in parts he even started to imitating Gandalf, first mockingly with the pipeweed. In the search of becoming greater, he studied Sauron's weapons. Envy got the best of him, he started to see Sauron not as an enemy but as an adversary he needed to be stronger than. He wanted to find the ring for himself (he is not evil yet). At some point after defeating Sauron in Dol Goldur, he faced the will of Sauron via the Palantír. He lost and became ensnared, yet he is not truely Sauron's servant. So to summarize: jealousy, leads to lust to become better, leads to lust for power, leads to mindbattle lost against Sauron.
Sir Chris was and still is a Legend. Emphasis on the Legend. He was one of the few that brought the cinema industry to life and any director and/or film company to have Sir Chris to have starred in their films should be honored to have had his wisdom, his knowledge and perfect talent. From Dracula to Count Dooku and of course one of the grratest villains in fantasy history Saruman, im sure others can agree, thank you Sir Christopher Lee, may you rest well.
I wasnt into that fantasy stuff. But when i went to see the first Movie. I was STUNNED!!! Was in line for everyone of them at opening. And i never have done that. GREATEST FRANCHISE EVER!!!
It is wonderful, that an actor like Mr. Lee, took the time to learn and know the history of his character and his role in this fictional setting. It rings of professionalism.
I periodically revisit these videos because I love listening to Christopher Lee speak. He wanders off from the question so much and I have absolutely nothing to complain about.

so what we learned...he didn't answer the question, instead went on randomly but with a far more interesting direction. I could listen to the guy talk all day. as him how he is doing, and 8 hours later being lectured about occult mysticism and ancient warlock practices...and I would be fully happy he forgot the initial question. RIP Christopher. your mind is amazing and a great loss to this planet.
I know that Christopher Lee was crowned as a knight, but everything about him is like he was born from Royalty, his voice, the way he expressed his words, his facial expressions. The man is like he's the king of the world. No, he should be King !
I would happily listen to old Christopher Lee interviews for hours on end, especially when he's delving into Tolkien material. Such a wise man with a wonderful voice.
Fun fact about Saruman is that when the 5 wizards came to Middle Earth in the Third Age, Cirdan welcomed them in the Grey Havens. And he saw beforehand that Gandalf the grey was far more noble and wiser than Saruman the white, who was the leader of the wizard order. This was one of the reasons why Saruman disliked Gandalf.
Cirdan, not Galadriel. Cirdan was the master of the Grey Havens, the points where those coming into Middle Earth would enter, or conversely, when those who chose to leave Middle Earth, left via the Grey Havens. Cirdan was gifted with far-sight, and also held possession of Narya, the Ring of fire, one of the 3 elven rings. when Gandalf entered Middle Earth, Cirdan saw that Gandalf was perhaps the greatest and wisest of the 5, even through Saruman came first and was initially, ranked higher than Gandalf. It was this foresight which also made Cirdan give his ring to Gandalf so that he could 'kindle the fire in the hearts of men'. Saruman's Elvish name was Curunir, Gandalfs was Mithrandir
just listening to him........it's like your grandfather retelling his war days. man, i could listen to this man talk about tolkien and the "ring saga" for hours......wow.
I'd love to be that old but I'd hate to have the memory that goes with it. The older you get, the worse your short term memory becomes while your long term memory is in vivid detail. This is why Chris needed the question repeated.
I love how everyone just falls completely silent when Sir Lee speaks. Doesn't even matter that he forgot half the question. He has the years and the age to show for, and so what if his memory fails him when he's in his 90s. Such an amazing human being. RIP Sir Lee. Your legacy will always remain.
The world won't end until Sir Christopher says so. New rules. He was my hero as a kid in a Catholic school back in the eighties. The way Lee just throws down both of the two Blue Wizards’ actual names off the top of his head is just mind boggling.
The absolute Legend new his material.
The only man apart of the two greatest series in existence. This man sweats excellence, and shits brilliance.
Weeeelll, you can say that (arguably) about John Rhys-davies, but who's splitting hairs these days
What a great man. Great actor, great soldier. Rest in peace and many thanks for a life's work.
Honestly going to miss this man! R.I.P Sir Christopher, truly was a great man!
You can only have respect for that man, Lee is a remarkable actor and will be remembered and missed when the times come
Whoever has the chance to sit down and have a chat with him is very,very,very lucky ;__;
I like ho in the thumbnail of the video. We see a restless and corrupted Saruman, but behind that is a kind and warm hearted man.
"You didn't answer my question, but I got to hear your voice for 3 minutes straight so I'm satisfied with your response"
Sir Christopher Lee is such a class act. A true personification of the hero, the gentleman and the wise man. From his days fighting in ww2 to his acting career... brilliance every step of the way. Today's society no longer produce people like him.
I love his voice... he is such a great actor.
God blessed Christopher Lee, rest in peace Sir!
I'm pretty sure he's been in more films than any actor
Yep, he has the record! (More than 350)
IMdb lists John Wayne as an actor in 169 feature films. Christopher Lee is listed as an actor in 200 feature films.
Eric Roberts is listed as an actor in 324 feature films. Never heard of him before either. He's 61 years old, so I guess he could add 100 more. Then there's Prem Nazir, actor in 528 Indian feature films.
I think, that honor goes to Mr. James (David Lo Pan)
Hong.
Such an incredible man, soldier, and actor. He will forever be missed.
I’d love for a documentary about his life, and I mean a full in-depth look at everything.
anyone know why this guy is such a boss?
because he's Christopher F*cking Lee!! :)
DarkSTBAngel you're damn right even though i refer to him ass Sauron!!!!!
omi won I think you mean Saruman?
StefanMoek oh crap! my mistake, thanks for correcting me haha
Its the deep and wise tone of his voice
What a joy it would've been to sit and talk with that man
I miss that guy. What a presence, even at the end.
I tell ya'll, Sir Christopher Lee was well within the most talented and gifted artists - if not men at all - ever to have lived!
I could listen to him talk about just about anything all day long. That voice is bewitching.
12 years later, I doubt anybody will read this comment, but the progression of Saruman's "evilness" is quite interesting.
How Saruman slowly got corrupted and eventually lost the battle of wills against Sauron via tha Palantír:
Jealousy of Gandalf: Saruman volunteered to go to Middle-Earth and was sort of the leader of the gang, but Gandalf was asked with a quote "not the third" implying Gandalf is at least equal to Saruman.
An absolute craftsman.
When it comes to incredibly awesome elderly men, Christopher Lee is my hero! :)))
I periodically revisit these videos because I love listening to Christopher Lee speak. He wanders off from the question so much and I have absolutely nothing to complain about.
His presence and voice is so powerfull, that people fell obligated to laugh at even his unfunniest comments. Just like Saruman would.
That man had such a great commanding voice no doubt one of the great actors of his time...always loved him in James Bond, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings..hell I loved him in the Hammer horror movies as well ..Rest in Peace Sir Christopher Lee..we your fans miss you but thank you for the work you left we can still enjoy..God bless you.
so what we learned...he didn't answer the question, instead went on randomly but with a far more interesting direction.
I could listen to the guy talk all day. as him how he is doing, and 8 hours later being lectured about occult mysticism and ancient warlock practices...and I would be fully happy he forgot the initial question.
RIP Christopher. your mind is amazing and a great loss to this planet.
one of my most favorite villains (Saruman and Dooku) of my childhood and youth. R.I.P. Legend.
MrNickm28 Thank you friend, looks like you are right :)
MrNickm28 Galadriel preferred Gandalf to Saruman for leadership of the White Council, no doubt another factor in Saruman's jealousy.
I could listen to this man for hours about anything he talks about the Middle-earth.. or anything else, such a great man.. R.I.P.
Is it just me that would like to hear Lee as the voice actor for a Lord of the Rings audiobook?
There is an audio book of The Children of Húrin read by him :) It is lovely, so if you can get your hands on a copy of it, get it!
He was the kind of guy where he speaks and everyone listens, not a peep.
Read "of the istaria" in the silmarilian it explains the origin of each wizard and how saruman was obsessed with the lore of the rings power
How can you not love this man , legend
He speaks like an old wise man who has a story to tell and a lesson to be told.
Replace “He speaks like” for “He is”
just listening to him........it's like your grandfather retelling his war days. man, i could listen to this man talk about tolkien and the "ring saga" for hours......wow.
Dat voice... The dark voice to give a documantary while Morgan Freeman is the light voice.
I'd love to be that old but I'd hate to have the memory that goes with it. The older you get, the worse your short term memory becomes while your long term memory is in vivid detail. This is why Chris needed the question repeated.
Amazing this is the only guy that knew and was friends with J R R Tolkein when he was alive.
Count Dooku dislikes this video .
Count Dookie. 😁😁😁😁😁
The world won't end until Sir Christopher says so. New rules.
He was my hero as a kid in a Catholic school back in the eighties. He was an excellent Bond villain too, and the one with both the coolest name and the coolest title!
Awesome deep voice, he can dredge up dark emotions from the pit of his solar plexus and shiver your genes with fear, if he wants to. All he'd have to do is slightly squint, and then show a little of his teeth...
What a dude. Hats off to you Sir Chris, you're a legend.
Imagine this: A skyrim movie where Sir Christopher plays the Greybeard master Wulfgar, his voice is so powerfull it fits a Master of Thu'um perfectly.
Miss seeing this man in films. Thankful he blessed us with all he did. What a legend
Actually, Tolkien did explain how Saruman got corrupted, it's in the very last chapter of the Silmarillion
So delighted he got the role that seems to mean so much to him. God bless Christopher.
"They went east" 2020 in the last era of men and still the only official information we have about the 2 blue Wizards...
Rest in peace my friend
He is an amazing actor and probably an amazing person!!!
I could never grow tired of hearing this man talk.
Love the way he talks
I could listen to this man for days ... learn everything from him. So knowledgeable!
Class act all the way. And a huge Tolkien fan.
The man's voice was a gift from Eru Illuvatar. What a commanding yet gentle presence.
I would pay to hear a conversation between Christopher Lee and Morgan Freeman.
Christopher Lee DESTROYS Morgan Freeman in a verbal conversation just like with any other american.
That truly has got to be the most ignorant statement I have ever heard from an individual.
bigmac51290 Truth hurts when a mans butt hurts.
Zgmflegend You must have the worst case of hemorrhoids ever known then eh?
Zgmflegend Also, if you're going to put something in all caps you may want to make sure it's spelled correctly before you post.
This man was gifted with a truly majestic voice. Rest in Peace Sir Christopher Lee.
Oh if only Stephen Colbert and Sir Christopher Lee sat down for an interview about anything Tolkien... The nerdgasm will be overwhelming ;)
Since Ian Holm died I've totally immersed myself in LOTR and I've loved every second. You forget how incredible the films are and all the magic that was captured in all the extras and interviews like this. Christopher Lee truly adored the books. We lost a true gentlemen with Lee, what an actor. Oh I wish I could have been a fly on the wall whilst filming the trilogy!
He also recorded an audiobook of The Children of Hurin.
I had no idea of that before I started listening and damn, it was a magical moment to suddenly have Saruman narrate the tragedy to you.
His voice is so amazing, that people get hipnotized and forget he did not answer the question.
Amazing mind trick.
