I think the closest you've gotten to beating sonic is almost killing him in adventure 2, if Sonic had been just a bit too slow or was unable to chaos control out of there with the fake emerald you'd have won!

I feel Eggman has gotten the closest to winning in the Adventure series, Unleashed and Forces.... honestly I would count Unleashed and Forces as a win for Eggman.. in both cases he accomplished his goal and only failed to maintain the win but he still technically won in those games
Well kind of. In Unleashed, his goal was to kill Sonic by electrocuting him and then throwing him down to Earth, but Chip saved him from the fall. So that plan failed. He also planned on gaining control over the world by using Dark Gaia to build his Empire, but he betrayed him.

That's a good point. It certainly was one of those times he came very close indeed. The plot felt very intense and you could really feel the urgency of the situation since you were so invested in the world. Definitely my favorite Sonic game.

Honestly, this convinces me on why Robotnik decided to bust out his Death Egg mech so early in Sonic Mania. He learned his lesson on saving his toughest creation till the ending from what happened in Sonic Generations.
I always thought Sonic Mania was some alternate universe that while it took place after S3&K. Would go on to create its own branch of events. Actually wasn’t it hinted or implied that the Classic Sonic we play as in Forces is the Sonic we play as in Mania?

You might want to read this before you comment: "Eggman never wins" and "beating Sonic" both mean (in my Interpretation at least), that Eggman either defeated Sonic for good or made sure that Sonic wont interfere with his Plans otherwise. So Sonic Riders and Chronicles don't count as a win, and he lost in Forces at the End because of Sonic, so he didn't beat Sonic. For My Opinion: it's basically a mystery on how they got out unless Sega wants the players to use their imagination on how they got out after Eggman's last lines before returning back to the title screen

Except for that last one, he's never won in the slightest That last one could've succeeded if Sonic hadn't known Choas Control. Thus, if Sonic didn't, well, that would be Eggman's victory once and for all. But no.
The time Sonic is blasted out of the ARK in a capsule is the closest Eggman has gotten to killing Sonic. It was also a really suspenseful moment the first time seeing it since Sonic hadn't tried to use Chaos Control at that point.
Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result. In this case it's trying to take over the world and beating Sonic for good, both never really work out too well... And yes, I know Eggman does succeed in Forces, but he still ends up losing it all again.
I think that there could be a more simple explanation:the phantom ruby created a distortion in limbo right before its arrival in sonic mania. It appears in the modern sonic universe after some games just because time traveling can make you go years and years in the future in just a second. But this is just a theory.
I think what happened is that the Phantom Ruby decided to bring the time back to when the end of Chronicles was there and Eggman brought everything he could to the future which is now destroyed and ruined

Funny how after Unleashed's Eggman, the E.G.G.M.A.N theme ended and switched to the sillier AoStH Robotnik theme since Colors was where they stopped taking him seriously. Unless, wait, was that even intentional?
I love how at 4:20, the music transitions from Eggman's epic albeit a little silly, theme from Sonic Adventure 2 to his far wackier theme from one of the old Sonic cartoons (I don't remember which one it was.). It's like the music to the video is saying, "Okay, now this is getting ridiculous."
The Cartoon was Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog [Robotniks Theme] and that's a great Way to describe it. I gave Colours the Theme because the Story itself was different from the Writing before so your Statement "Okay, now this is getting ridiculous." is on Point.

Robotnik and Eggman both realize that there is no door and only White Space. Knowing they have to spend the rest of eternity in this endless void, they just have to sit and think about what always and never was; while mandatory duplicates of themselves take the mantle.
Well, he did win practically speaking. Each time you died to him or his robots, he won in that "Universe", but since save-load mechanics are a thing, we go back and create a new one in wich we beat him. Reminds me of a game that puts that into our face yet is decades younger than the Sonic Trilogy (Yes, Undertale). :D
I'd like to consider the Bad Future Zones in Sonic CD a win by Eggman because technically he still won over the zones and mechanized them before Sonic came along. Not to mention most players just blitz through the game instead of finding the generators or time zones so I consider this a win for Eggman

You might want to read this before you comment:
"Eggman never wins" and "beating Sonic" both mean (in my Interpretation at least), that Eggman either defeated Sonic for good or made sure that Sonic wont interfere with his Plans otherwise.
So Sonic Riders and Chronicles don't count as a win, and he lost in Forces at the End because of Sonic, so he didn't beat Sonic.
There are many Comments/Topics so if you think there is something that isn't mentioned there (this Comment might show you what has been written A LOT) then looking through them might not be a bad Idea.

The time Sonic is blasted out of the ARK in a capsule is the closest Eggman has gotten to killing Sonic. It was also a really suspenseful moment the first time seeing it since Sonic hadn't tried to use Chaos Control at that point.
Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result. In this case it's trying to take over the world and beating Sonic for good, both never really work out too well...
And yes, I know Eggman does succeed in Forces, but he still ends up losing it all again.

I think that there could be a more simple explanation:the phantom ruby created a distortion in limbo right before its arrival in sonic mania. It appears in the modern sonic universe after some games just because time traveling can make you go years and years in the future in just a second. But this is just a theory.
I think what happened is that the Phantom Ruby decided to bring the time back to when the end of Chronicles was there and Eggman brought everything he could to the future which is now destroyed and ruined

I love how at 4:20, the music transitions from Eggman's epic albeit a little silly, theme from Sonic Adventure 2 to his far wackier theme from one of the old Sonic cartoons (I don't remember which one it was.). It's like the music to the video is saying, "Okay, now this is getting ridiculous."
The Cartoon was Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog [Robotniks Theme] and that's a great Way to describe it. I gave Colours the Theme because the Story itself was different from the Writing before so your Statement "Okay, now this is getting ridiculous." is on Point.

Well, he did win practically speaking.
Each time you died to him or his robots, he won in that "Universe", but since save-load mechanics are a thing, we go back and create a new one in wich we beat him.
