Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin, 1991

From September 1991, commercial rents in Karl-Marx-Allee in former East Berlin increase tenfold. Where the rent in GDR times was still 5 marks per square metre, now 50 marks are due. Many shops or restaurants have already left the 2.5 km long street that runs through the Mitte and Friedrichshain districts. Other shops, such as the Karl Marx bookshop, are considering whether the sales area needs to be reduced. The district offices accompany the price increases and explain differences in rent levels for retail and ancillary spaces.
