@HoboShoestring , Wow Mark, this ride brings back memories and emotions for me. With your recent comments about surgery I just realized your last name is Nichols! Hello Brother from another Mother! :D The one and only time I rode a freight train was this run from Reno over the pass (1977-1978 'ish). I was in a grain car or one that carries plastic pellets something like that, that looks like a grain car. At least mine was quiet! Hah hah! I was very young, desperate, on my own due to dysfunctional family, and needed to find my way to the bay area. In Reno, it was hot, middle of summer. I had taken a dip in a canal with running fresh water to cool off. Glad I had dried off before getting up in the pass. No snow, but the temperature difference was still an issue. I was a burrito in a blanket, but the scenery is unforgettable. I lived most of my life on and off in California, up until 2005. Now I live in middle Tennessee. Love it here too. It's so cool to see this video and you other ones of Tennessee also. I'm 58 now, disable, and no way I could visit Alaska and do the things I once did in my youth. I have to live vicariously through your videos and others now. Thank you for this experience! All my brotherly love! Grace and Peace to you in our Lord! Jack Nichols
That's really awesome. I would have loved to have tried riding the rails at least once just for the sake of trying it. I certainly give u lots of credit for doing what your heart yearned for. Today we settle for what has to be done and expected, caught up in life in general til one day u realize its too late to take a chance.
25 years ago on my 40th birthday rode the train to Reno and was looking forward to the views up there, my luck, one of the worst spring snowstorms in history, solid white higher than the train, trapped for 5 hours in one spot and couldn't see a thing but white walls out the windows and by the time it got going it was dark outside and the way home on a friggin' bus😩
Donner Pass. Site of one of the saddest tragedies, ever. On the other hand, it is also one of the most beautful places in the world. Thanks for the amazing video!!! God bless you.
ChainsawN&W1218, riding in a gondola through the Sierra Nevadas,I know when the snow ❄ gets rough up there Union Pacific uses there rotary snow plow, that thing is cool, got a videos of it working that area through Truckee and Donner Pass.
I would love it too. The only way I will get to ride a train through there is inside an Amtrak though lol. Although I would still enjoy riding on an Amtrak any way. I think traveling by train is such a great way to travel.
Seeing Donners Pass and all that snow u come to understand some of the hardships those poor settlers had to endure when stranded during that winter. So very sad. However, Shoestring, I absolutely loved the scenery!!!! What awesome views. I could see myself living in a cabin perched on top of one of those mountains lol. What a great way to see the country side by train. I plan to ride a train too only mine will be inside an Amtrak lol!!! I would love to try your way, but, I'm not as brave as u.
Years ago on an Amtrak from Niagara Falls to NYC I rode most of the Hudson River between cars, hanging out of a window that opened. I couldn’t get enough of the amazing landscape. I was grateful that the conductor ignored me. Finally as we rolled into the city & it was getting dark, he said it was too dangerous. “People throw rocks at us.” He explained. That’s the closest I’ve ever. One to this raw open and free form of travel.
@@beeble2003 Yes Once you were away from the Managers the job was pretty sweet , given you had a decent conductor. Not everyone you worked with did a good job , That includes engineers as well as conductors . As far as wild life , well not so much . When your running up the hill with 12,000 horse power screaming it tends to run things off . Thats just the head end power not mid DP’s or rear helper . Inside of 10 year out of a 27 year career I only saw 5 mountain lions , and non on Donner pass . All the mountain lions were on the feather River run . I probably only saw 15 beers total on either run . Even seen a few Porcupines on Donner near the east approach to the bill hole ( long tunnel ) ... Now the neatest times to be running up there were in the middle of a nasty snow storm , granted your hoping you have no mechanical issues or a detector doesn’t get you for a non issue , but watching the winds whip through , and run through the occasional avalanche kept things interesting .
That train car you’re in I just unloaded it in Tacoma Washington took a bunch of metal out angles flat 40 footers 20 footers it was all sitting on 4 x 4 dunnage we had to clear all the dunnage out before we send it back they also use that box car for like ground up metal nice to see your brother🇺🇸
I have driven Hwy. 80 over the Donner Pass many times. I always look up to see the RR Tracks. Been a RR buff from my first memories. Had many family and friends work for the RR.
Beautiful ride! I rode the highway next to the track through Donner Pass on my Harley-Davidson, but it was in mid May. No snow, but the scenery was not as pretty as your video.
I'm a member of the National Speleological Society. What I've done in California mountains and in some states visited by Hobo Shoestring is to climb or walk underground. in 2021 I'd been invited to party with people who proved to the US Government that they had found more than 150 miles under one state. Where nobody had ever gone before. The longest hole I ever visited now has been tape-measured more than 40 miles in length. Sorry, no catch-out rides..
@@TheHoboShoestring Yessir, I did know that. My comment was from quite a while ago. Kinda cool to know you go back and read these things :) Spring is coming, Mark! Any big plans for the warmer weather? You've traveled so much this year... AK twice, all over the dang place... What's left! :)
I mean, OK, but that's not actually all that much snow. You'd see more than that pretty much anywhere in the northern half of the continental US, every winter.
"Shotgun" earphones might not get rid of the very loud squeal..........but the rest of the trip might be a lot more peaceful. And transparent ski goggles would guarantee that you could stick your face above the side of the car so that you can see what you're running past without needing to squint. The train yard videos are entertaining but it just seems like you don't film from the train as much any more . For some peoplethis is the only way they'll see America outside of their immediate area

Nice ride! I've been this route on Amtrak, but your way looks like more fun!
Me too Henry. I've been through there many many times - But I was on I-80 driving. And yeah this looks way more fun. :)

Slim chance but I may have been your Engineer on that ride . That was my run for 10 years before I retired .

Donner party of 7, your table is ready
Went thru Donner Pass in an auto in Jan of 1971. There was lotsa snow then.
I did this one once ... it was a party train from Sac town to Reno, danced and drank w/ the old lady and partied in Reno....
my wife and I were up there during our honeymoon years ago... gorgeous area
Great video, but, It looks cold...
Beautiful
Got to ride in the observation car this time. Nice.

SHO3STRING... I BEEN OVER THAT MOUNTAIN MANY MANY TIMES IN A SEMI TRUCK... THATS WHAT I DRIVE... BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY.. STAY SAFE..
A free ride through the snow now that's what's up
Keep expecting to see Big Foot jump behind a tree or bush. Lol
Big Foot's riding a car farther back down the train.
Also, still riding with Ron, or did you part ways after Alaska? Bless you Mark, stay safe and healthy.

Hey shoestring you ever ride over the Cajon pass in Southern CA?
👍🏼🤠
You’ve been to the donner pass? I live in Reno. R u ever gonna come back thru this area again? Plz do; it’s quite beautiful, especially in summer.
Seems like earplugs would be a necessity ...
4:52 I’ll never understand how that precipice doesn’t wash out from under the tracks. Really close and a long way down.
✌️👍
About candle under the wool blanket , out of the wind as much as possible, cold.
Was it Shoestring ?
Do you ever come to Sacramento or Rancho Cordova that's where I live
Got caught up there one year with a really bad car in a really bad blizzard and almost didn’t make it out.

Donner Pass you didn't eat nobody did you LOL😁🤑😜🐝
Shoestring do you ever get to see wild animals on these trips? Nice area..🦍
The zooming worked out nice....at 7 min...
Christ, all that brake screeching would drive me flippen insane.
Then stay off of trains, they are LOUD!
Rob that's flange squeal you're hearing. Tight curves cause that.

I can't imagine how Stobe the Hobo would get shitted and then have to wake up listening to that oh my God... I would definitely have ear plugs

Earplugs ?
That's the first time I've ever seen you ride a gondola. You're usually riding a boxcar or grainer, aren't you?
He was a lot younger when he shot this video 😏
Been over it a couple times on 18 wheeler one time and winter time never again diesel Dan
I hope you have some kind of ear protection? Those screeching wheels sound pretty loud around some of those curves.
I'm pretty sure he said something like he's deaf in one ear and has 40% hearing in the other. I think he's too far gone in terms of hearing to care.
Start going deaf that tells you how long shoestring has been riding trains.
Deaf in right ear and 40% in left but the right Inner ear had an aneurysm causing deafness in 1999
WAS EXTRA LONG VIDEO FOR SHOESTRING FOR A CHANGE
ever seen a bigfoot
Donner Pass on a Gondola? 😳 that's how people get eaten, I'd ride a DPU
How can you possibly sleep on that thing? LOL

I’ve seen planes flying lower 😂
Do hobos encounter any instances of cannibalism at Donner Pass?
