When the Mahanoy Tunnel was built, the Mahanoy Plane was no longer needed. What was the route the coal took after it went through the Mahanoy Tunnel, versus when the coal went up the Mahanoy Plane?

Thanks for the video! I walked through in 1996, without a flashlight. Would never do that again! First half, depending on the light from behind me to guide me, getting darker and darker. Second half, depending on the light in front of me, blinding me more & more as I moved forward.

Reading Company or Reading Railway. Philadelphia to Williamsport main line. Highest point on the Reading. Favorite ride of the Reading Rambles. Popular trains that couldn't produce the income to save the railroad. All these trains disappeared when mail was put on trucks. Trains and tracks are taxed and tax money was spent on roads and airports.

I live about 3 miles from the tunnel. I go out there quite often. Would love to show you the old bootleg mines in the Mahanoy City area that are buried deep in the woods.

Are the tunnels near Lofty Rd? My maternal great grandparents owned two houses (one was a good/gas stop years and years ago) at 293 Lofty Rd. My mother spent her summers there w/her grandparents. Hoping to find old photographs of what the area looked like back when the trains still ran through there.

Those train tunnels are so creepy for some reason! Looks like you needed a lot more light, though. I wonder if the flooding in that tunnel was a continual problem back when it was actively being used? Glad to see you went back and got more lighting for the second walk-through! Cool! I use two Fenix lights on my helmet and hand-carry another one. They are the Fenix PD 32 models, I believe. Super bright. Highly recommended! I also have a similar light made by the Thru-Nite company which is equally as good. I use it, too. Awesome video!

No it was not a problem when the railroad used it. It was well maintained. There were always ditches filled with water on both sides of the tracks( filled with tadpoles and frogs) but it drained out the other side of the tunnel and down the hill into the Lofty Dam. It was just after it was abandoned that the water became a problem. (Comment from a Lofty resident)

I went on a bike ride in Idaho on the Hiawatha trail. We wore headlamps thru a mine that has water contained to the outer edge of the trail. But some crash their bikes and end up in there. It's so dark I used 1 lamp in my hand & the other on my helmet.

Youre a brave woodsman. That's a long tunnel for a little tiny light! :)

Where is this located exactly? My my maternal great grandparents owned a little food (and maybe gas) stop. They lived in the house beside it and built onto it to make another house, at the intersection of Lofty Rd and Lofty Creek. My mother told me the old train tracks use to run along side their food stop. The tracks are no longer there and I’m confused as to whether or not they were the same tracks that ran through the tunnel. I’d really like to find old pictures of the area because it was such a small town and my great grandparents buildings are still there.

Have you ever used a Lidar map viewer to locate old railroad grades and tunnels??

Last time I was at that tunnel was in 1995 and than I drove through it with my Dodge truck. You should check out Shumans tunnel on this old rail line. This line was the Catawissa railroad. (Reading Company).

Seriously dark place. It's one of those places where the walls absorb the light.

You should definitely do a return visit now that you've got more lights and a newer camera. Still a great video nonetheless. Shocked I didn't watch it before now.

I enjoy watching your hikes. I have taken videos of a couple hikes and have not published them because they are too shaky. Do you use a gimbal? If you do, what one is it?
