How about CasaOS install? Do you think it would be better for first timers, instead of Ubuntu server? I bought a mini PC with Intel N100, and I'm planning to do something similar. Pozdrav
suggestion?: use the old HDD as a nice backup driver (mirror), if it eventually crashes, it finally used its life, and no money was lost (apart from data) for those who find it difficult to setup a static IP address through ubuntu, if your home ISP modem has a DHCP Reservation option, you can setup a static IP of your choosing with the MAC address of the server. in the ubuntu server, type "ifconfig -a", find "ether" or "eth0" and you'll find the MAC Address (e.g12:ab:a1:b2:b1:a2). put those details in the modem and give server a reset, if it not working, shutdown the ubuntu server and reboot you home modem to clear the caching.
2:48 the G41 motherboards had the graphics integrated on the mobo not the CPU so the lack of CPU-GPU shouldn't have been a problem as no socket 775 CPUs had on-package GPUs...
i think i will run my home server which i will use as a NAS on windows because i would easily get lost in linux, i definitely know my way around a windows machine
Hey, thanks for the comment! I still haven't got the time to thinker with Proxmox yet but it's deifnitely on my TODO list. I'll make a video about is as soon as get it running
Haha, it's the "Xiaomi Mi Handheled Vacuum Cleaner"... It actually broke like 2 weeks after recording this video. The battery didn't last more than 1.5yrs and when I tried to replace the cells inside, the tamper protection triggered and basically killed the whole thing. I'm actually making a video about it at the moment and It's going to be a pretty interesting fix. I designed a small PCB to bypass the mainboard so I can still use the vacuum since everything else is working and it's really useful to have it portable like that
thank only had to worry about nomodeset to install ubuntu and the 0 in the addresse and gateway 4 needed to be a 50 but now we are off windows YEAR OF LINUX WHOOO
Hello I have also built my initial home server using my old pc to store steam games as well as storing my files. I am using windows 10 pro with intel i 3 3rd gen 3.30 ghz speed with 16 gb of ram However I have customized the windows 10 by deleting default apps and softwares and I am also using it remote PC to use outside my network. In the near future, I'm planning to upgrade the Cpu with xeon like yours. However I tried to use kali lunix and ubantu sever but was not able to feel comfortable. Can you suggested me how to install Open VPN server to access my important files outside the network
I'll be making a video on how to access your network remotely soon... It won't be Open VPN but something much much easier and simpler to setup. Make sure to stay tuned ;)
What software do you suggest for home cameras? The only free one I could find only works on windows and is kinda shit. I really wanna change to Linux for that server but IDK what software to use.
i tried to install ubuntu server on 12 year old pc Pc Sec is core 2 Duo Processor Gigabyte g31M motherboard with 4Gb ddr3 ram 128gb ssd as bootable drive 500gb as storage drive. but i cant able to install it shows an error
No, it doesn't matter... The desktop version may be easier to use while the server version is a lighter OS, meaning it takes fewer resources to run. I chose to go with the server version since I don't log into this PC often, and I set up most of the stuff I need in the beginning and dont touch it from there
My guess is an incorrect character in the yaml file you edited. I guess this because that is what I did - I read a "1" as an "l" in the network card name and it lost my computer completely until I figured it out.
Hi bro I am an app developer and I want to make my own server so that I can use it as an app server so I don't have to buy paid services like firebase or other services so can u help to build my own server please ?
2:50 "The xeon doesn't have an integrated GPU..." No. None of the socket 775 generation CPU's had integrated GPU's integrated Gfx was done on the motherboard. the G41 chipset has the "GPU". You probably needed to enable it in the BIOS as the previous owner probably disabled it because they had a discrete GPU card installed. Also if you tried to use it with the GPU card plugged in, that also probably disabled it, but I guarantee you, that PC has an integrated graphics (Specifically GMA X4500) There is a slight advantage to using the dedicated GPU and that's to prevent the GMA from taking a bit of system memory for itself
Realistically, you're not pulling as much as younthink as long as you're not pushing it to its full. I run 4 rackmount Xeon servers and 2 q6600 core 2 quad cpu towers. They all run 24/7 and I'm on prepaid electricity. I spend about 25 dollars on electricity per month.
I'm putting together a server can you tell me if the specs are okay it's a ryzen 9 6900 HX 8core 16 thread 3.3 GHz base clock 4.9 GHz boost clock 32 GB of ddr5 dual channel 5600mhz sodimm a 1 TB m.2 nvme SSD and a 500 GB M.2 nvme SSD it has high speed ethernet Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 Windows 11 and an RX 6700 XT 12 gigabyte graphics card I want to run a thousand slot do you think that's possible
Is this meant to be a humble brag? That's a decent spec gaming PC (and I'm sure you know it) You don't generally need such a powerful PC as a home server unless you're running a Plex server for all your internet friends and a hundred other server apps...
Why even have a text annotation if you show it just for a millisecond? So annoying if people do that. Interresting topic but I really hope that was a one off.

Yes, of course. You need to setup a VPN or something similar like Twingate so you can access it from outside of your network.
