    • @HarleyWood23
      @HarleyWood23  4 года назад +11

      It’s faster to deploy the blade. Give it a try. Demonstrates best with a folding flipper. Pull it out of your pocket tip up and flip the knife open. Then pull it out of your pocket tip down. In the latter scenario you’ll have to adjust the knife in your hand before flipping it open.

    The Olight may be brighter, but the Fenix does have more surrounding circle light (larger circle) and the tonality is cooler, which both things I do prefer.

    Thank you for taking the time to do that side by side comparison . A noticeable distinction between the two once the night comes... that clear defined edge of the spot on that O light is AWESOME and VERY CLEAR

    On the olight you can half press the tail switch to leave the low mode on, or full press the switch to enter turbo and leave it on. If you half press and hold you’ll be in “momentary low mode”. But if you switch to the tactical setting half press becomes turbo and full press becomes strobe. With the same momentary limits when held.

    I have both, I prefer the fenix as it has better run times. The olight bezel is too aggressive to carry as an everyday carry as it will tear up your pocket. Therefore I carry the fenix but the olight is in my truck if needed.

    I liked the Fenix pattern more, because it lit up a bigger area, but that would be for general use vs the olight for something like a weapon light. Where you want to light up something specific.

    My only issue with the Olight is the barrel button. The Olight can turn on while in you back jean pocket if the barrel button is unintentionally pressed by your bum or the pocket side. I like to carry my flashlight in my back pocket, but would worry I might burn my bum. I read a few reviews complaining of flashlights with on/off barrel buttons for that exact reason. I got the Fenix PR36R primarily for this reason. But I do like the Olight's light better and more aggressive bezel.

    I own several O lights and Fenix's. The 36R having the wider spill and good hot spot makes it the perfect tech light. I work HVACR and the 5 brightness modes, good throw and spill make it perfect for chasing wires and line sets across large areas on bright and close up work reading schematics with the low brightness. C cable fast charging in the truck if needed between jobs is great too. Same charging cable as my phone. O Lights are solid lights but the Fenix just makes more sense for my application. Had Sure Fire lights too and the tailcaps become ify pretty quickly and have fewer features. Fenix has never failed to fire in the two years of 20+ times per day use I've put it through so far.

      if you compare his shed/backyard shots the Olight has no flood at all its just a hot spot and very little spill. Other than smaller size, those TIR optics Olight uses are always a compromise on output. Simple physics says your always trying to match a real reflector that is considered 100% efficient at projecting the light. Good read here on that livid.lighting/optical-technology-optic-tir-vs-reflector/

    I have to be honest, I love this everything about the olight except I wish it had a little bit more spill. It lights up your target well but nothing between you and what you aim it at. The fenix wasn’t as impressive out far but I liked the spill up close. For the record, I own several other olights but no fenix.

    What to choose?...
    I want to upgrade my Fenix tk16 (which I love), and have a "wish list" of improvements:
    - More lumen (brighter is better right)
    - Rechargeable through the flashlight (I'm done with using external chargers.)
    - Quick access to Turbo and Moonlight
    - Ability to tail stand (but tail switch is a must!)
    - But I want that same perfect beam pattern from the tk16, bright hot-spot and lots of spill.
    Share your recommendations please.

    Fantastic review Harley, I own multiple Fenix lights and older Olights, including the PD36R and have never experienced an issues out of them. They are solid lights.
    I will say the customer service from Fenix is light years above Olight. Just my 2 cents.

    To be fair several manufacturers are using that type of battery with both positive and negative contacts on front of battery...this is for shock or impact integrity. When you bounce some lights via shooting or running or drops the spring separates and light goes off briefly...with this innovation contact is maintained at all times. Good review😎

    Nice video!
    Olight likes to use non-standard 18650 and 21700. Strictly speaking, this is stupid. This means that apart from Olight's battery, you cannot use other standard batteries. The sole purpose of Olight is to allow users to buy his batteries. If your flashlight uses standard batteries, it means you can use high-quality and cheap industrial packaging batteries. For example, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung. Faithful advice

    • @eatmelily

      High quality and cheap?? Right, I don't trust my lights to a cheap battery.... I actually don't find myself needing a bunch of batteries. It takes about a second at the end of the day, to pop the magnetic charger on, hence they are all always charged...I hate having to plug crap in......it's a PITA....

    Have both of these. Prefer the olight M2r pro , however I do carry my fenix PD36R at work , only because I work in a metal fan shop , so I always leave with metal in the olight . So I guess it would really depend, on the use . I can say I carry my s1r 2 and then to grab that when I need a light at work . Which is plenty sufficient there . Another Awesome video

    FENIX are the best lights! As soon as a new design or function comes out on FENIX lights, Olight copies them and tries to increase lumens so that the typical person thinks Olight must be better. Not true, Fenix can easily beef up lumens but then you are going to run into the problems Olight has, and that is crappy battery life and much more crappier Turbo Mode times. I have never had a Fenix light fail me and I have had plenty of them, as I collect all types of nice flashlights as a hobby.
    One important thing also, the Olight magnet charger although a nice idea, it’s not that great in real world situations. If your going into the woods camping or being deployed, those Olight magnet clips are not going to do you any good cause you won’t have anywhere to plug them into to recharge your light. Worse yet, you can’t use regular batteries in the Olight flashlights! Fenix allows you to do both. So if I’m going on a hunting trip I’d much rather have a Fenix and just throw a pack of extra batteries into my bag in the event I drain the battery.

    I EDC an M2R Warrior. I’m not a huge fan and am looking at switching to the PD36R. Here’s why: the magnetic, metal, charging tail cap sucks. It seems cool, but it actually sucks. It attracts tons of metal dust, which then gets down in the grooves and shorts the light sometimes. It’s damn near impossible to clean out because of the magnet. Also, it WILL shock you if you hold the light in your mouth. If your tongue touches that button, it’s like touching a 9V battery. Also, sometimes I clip my keys on my left front belt loop, near my pocket which holds my M2R. The magnetic tail switch attracts metal rings on my keys, which connect the two contacts and turn on the light. Again, in my pocket. The main issue I have with the M2R is the side switch. I wish I could lock it out or at least make it so that it only works once the light is on. I accidentally hit the button and turn on the light (in my pocket) often. The light has literally melted a hole in a pair of my pants, and it runs itself almost dead in my pocket like once every two weeks. I like that the Fenix side button is dead until you turn it on via the tail switch.
    I will say, though, other than the switch issues, I LOVE the M2R. But they are very significant issues in my opinion.

    • @AllAboutAdventures
      @AllAboutAdventures 4 года назад

      U should be able to lock it out. Try holding the side switch for like 5-10 seconds, that's how u do it on the s1r2 and s2r2

    • @alphazuluz
      @alphazuluz 4 года назад

      Redlock 82 thanks for the info. It does lock it out, but it locks out both switches. That means if I needed it quickly, I would be SOL. Honestly, I just wish Olight or Nitecore or someone would make a simple EDC light with a UI similar to my old Streamlight Protac 2L-X. It was momentary or click to full power. Double tap to strobe, click to keep strobe, triple tap to low, click to keep low. I would go back to Streamlight, but the others have so much more output. I just want something simple with a tail switch only, momentary/click on, and fast access to full power and strobe. I don’t care if I have to do a dance to get to other levels or moonlight or whatever. I just want quick access to turbo and strobe.

    • @nitrorc4life1
      @nitrorc4life1 4 года назад +1

      It does not suck, it just is not the light for you, by your description of the negatives, the pd36r should fit your needs better it seems.

    • @allemander

      Olight M1X Striker is the light you need, if you can find one.
      They’re discontinued but sometimes available on eBay or check the Flashlight Fanatics group on Facebook for a private seller.
      The side switch on the M1X is inactive until powered on by its tail switch.
      It can be set to strobe from memory for instant strobe activation in momentary-mode or fully click on for constant-on mode (instant strobe from memory is a very rare feature, even in tactical lights). It has a 1,000 lumen max output. Built-in, very aggressive strike bezel. Runs on a single 18650 or a pair of CR123 or rechargeable RCR123 cells. It has moonlight mode and L/M/H & Turbo. No magnets or built-in charging system of any kind on this light so you’ll need an external charger and those are very inexpensive. Additionally, the rubber boot tail-switch does more than just turn it off and on with a single press. It has a double tap and triple tap feature built in for the instant access to turbo and strobe.

    I carry the fenix as the run time is way better, as I use mine for extended periods. Most of these led edc lights seem to be for quick short use but not me I use for long run time that require bright light so fenix PD36R with its 5 hr run time on high is the clear winner imo. Also I have the m2r pro and it gets way too hot and steps down in brightness very quickly.

    • @dusaintel

      Exactly. The runtime of the fenix flashlights can not be beaten. Also, ive had other lights and they get extremely hot to the point that you can not touch the front half of the light. Also, i love how fenix lights dont step down. Theyre true max lumens output. Others including olight step down after 3 min wtf. Screw that bs

      The Fenix PD36R can run on high for that long? What's going on? I have the PD40R V2 but it can only do high (3000 lumens) for 1 minute, and then it steps down to 1000. Why the blatant lie on the box that it does 2hour and 40min on high?

    I own the olight warrior x pro but that charger is so impractical I always lose it now the light just collects dust, cuz I just reach for my nitecore, or Fenix lights the specs are pretty much the same but uses the same type c charger I already use for my phone, plus the ports have inner water proof so it doesn't even have to be covered to be waterproof. So same specs, why would olight beat out the others when it's got a huge flaw of being impractical...

    Fenix for me... Olight doesn’t do great lights for real tactical purposes. I jumped on the band wagon and got the Olight seeker pro 2 for duty carry, and its pretty inconvenient. I work night shift and It doesn’t allow me to be conservative in giving my location away. There’s no rear or momentary button. And I heard the m2r pro warrior has issues too. I’m sticking with fenix

    • @donaldstrader7241
      @donaldstrader7241 4 года назад

      M2Pro Warrior issues have been resolved. I mentioned somewhere else that I wish they would add a momentary option to the Olight Seeker 2 Pro, but unless one is willing to use only momentary option on occasion, it would get complicated. Standard 21700 to me is the only better feature on the Fenix. Otherwise I like the M2R Pro better, a warmer beam for better perception, and the availability of lower levels than the Fenix eco level of 30 lumens. If you want a simple (only two levels) tough thrower the Warrior X Pro with its neutral white beam is terrific. Anyway I'm sure your Fenix will do well by you.
      For no particular reason I actually have the FDE M2R Pro on my belt right now. I'm amazed how responsive its tail cap switch is. I like that I can get 2 levels that way and go to the side switch if I need more, or is that less ;-) such as 1 lumen for 50 days.

    1. I don’t understand the battery issue. If you do prefer taking the battery out to charge it, you’ll likely have another to pop in. How would that make the proprietary battery any different if you had a spare?
    2. The rubber charging flap on my PD ripped off. It was problematic from day 1. The tail switch rubber ripped also.
    3. Fenix just updated the 36R and only updated the emitter. Same rubber flap. Same tail switch.
    4. Moonlight and no hassle to get to turbo? That should be standard on everything.
    5. Magnetic tail is underrated. Many situations where it is incredibly handy.
    Maybe that’s why I wandered over to Olight. They listen to customer feedback. They make useful improvements.
    I owned several Fenix when I got into it, now I can’t imagine life without an Olight.

    Compatibility, easier to cycle through settings, battery life, non proprietary batteries and the cooler light is a win win win for the Fenix. OLight is quality no doubt but the Fenix simply has to many more pros and none of the glaring cons.

  • @whatarefriends4

    No to the Olight because of the charger so I want the Fenix but my mind is too completely blown by the fact that the design made it to manufacture and nobody noticed that the button sticks out too far to set the damn thing on it’s end! That didn’t occur to them? They don’t pay any attention to the features of their competitors?

      @@HarleyWood23 That was one reason to watch since I could just look at the one I already have and my OD Green one should be here Friday morning. Probably just the anticipation. I really like that color in the Warrior X Pro so I hope it is similar. These will also be the revised ones. I do have the FDE version and was just noticing how good the controls are. I think my Camo one probably has a contaminated switch. It had some finish fragments around the switch when I received it so it may still have some in there. It just does not feel as good and I have had to hit the tail switch multiple times to turn it off. It always works to turn it on and there is the side switch, but I need to report it and see what Olight says.
      I also appreciated you mentioning the difference in Kelvin temperature. I find a higher CRI or fuller spectrum is very important. When the beam is too cool everything is just too flat and colors do not pop. I have had trouble distinguishing between FDE and OD Green, as well as, brown and deep maroon. Use a neutral white or warm beam and it is suddenly easy. The beam on the Seeker 2 Pro is so wonderfully even, I just wish it was a bit warmer. I saw another video with beamshots comparing the Fenix PD36R and the Olight M2R Pro Warrior and someone else commented how much better the detail was distinguished by the Olight, so I am not alone. Now if we can just get Olight to realize the same thing with their task lights and headlamps and provide a choice of NW (Neutral White) instead of just CW (Crappy White) I'll be very happy. They HAD the far better neutral white H1R and H2R Nova headlamps, then they stopped offering them in NW. So my friends who saw mine and ordered them in NW were in luck, now not so much. Besides too much blue in the light is bad for sleep patterns. :-)

    I know olight uses their proprietary battery like you said for charging. Will the fenix battery still power up the olight all the way to turbo but not magnetic charging? I'm pretty sure I tried it with the battery for the s1r baton and it worked with the purple aftermarket rechargeable cr123 and just couldn't activate turbo. And yes of green is gone. I only decided I wanted this light after already spending more than I wanted on the seeker w pro. Because right after I bought the black one olight had a flash sale with a blue one. Bastards. This time they didnt. I know about the upcoming flash sale but only the m2r is o ly available in the july 4th red white and blue version. Pretty but too flashy. Pun not intended. I don't know what on earth I am doing, but I have horrible luck with Fenix lights. I had a little AA battery one that stopped working in short order and the Duracell battery swelled inside and killed it. Then I had a UC30 USB rechargeable that ALWAYS flashed red battery low no matter how long I charged it, and that was out of the box. Fenix replaced it under warranty with a newer UC30 and that one just refused to turn back on one day. I also have a TK20 (I think) Fenix that has been really good from day one. I just got an Olight M2R warrior for Christmas I really like. I don't know what on earth is killing my Fenix lights.
    I've never had to use Olight customer service. Fenix cust service was a woman from China who asked me my serial # and then suddenly dropped off communications and never responded after that. A local company swapped it out (UC30) for another one which died shortly thereafter. I am apprehensive to trust another Fenix USB rechargable UC series.
