This reminds me of the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series on PS2. Luke also nailed what those games were all about when he talked about aesthetics. In high school (decades ago now WTF) my small group of friends would trade these games and talk about them and developed our own little culture that embraced anything Japanese. That might be why I’m still such a filthy anime nerd to this day. Even mentioning the bugs and issues he had with the title.. Games were full of bugs back then and the industry didn’t really have a best practice for UI design or accessibility yet either but it didn’t matter because the vibes man, the vibes…

Combining the baffling level design with the fact that your speed = music volume and tempo, it just feels like shit to have to slam on the brakes and backtrack, because it's basically silent while you do that.

This cat is different from any other car game. It’s a love letter to 90s car culture and 2000s tuner video games that’s slowly paving its own way

I remember seeing Midnight club 3 for the first time, on my way to school, a friend was playing it on his PSP, I had to have it... And about a year later, I did. The fact that game looked as good, controlled as good and ran as good on the bloody PSP still baffles me to this day, same with resident evil revelations on 3ds during my college days...

This looks so good even I, a non racing game person, am kind of intrigued. The vibe is pretty immaculate.

fun fact: while a lot of people think of initial D for illegal night races in japan, wangan midnight is probably more accurate in this case, as it also takes place on highways (instead of initial D, which takes place on curvy mountain roads, known as touge). also wangan midnight got it's name/inspiration from a real section of japanese highway, the wangan, which was notorious for late night races, often organized by the midnight club, which were a bunch of wealthy people importing & modding fast foreign cars (like the porsche at 0:48).

This reminds me of the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series my friends and I would play when we were younger. So cool and had a really dedicated following, but never had commercial success so it’s pretty much dead. Really cool to see the same type of game live on through this project!

I don't even like racing games and I want to go play this one. I LOVE when a game nails it's theme/genre/mission instead of trying to appeal to the broadest audience.

Just in case the OXTRA team doesn’t know, that jacket flip is Martin Sheen’s signature jacket flip he used a lot in “The West Wing”.

I'm definitely going to check this out. They hit the aesthetic so hard I seriously thought it was a PS2 game at first. As someone who grew up on NFS Underground 2, that's a huge positive.

This game reminds me a lot of the NFS Underground games, which are still my favourites from that series

There may only be about 30 people in the comments section that know what you're talking about, but you ain't wrong sir.
Even though my friends were into the GT series at the time, there was something undeniably magical about that game. Felt the OST was ahead of its time too...
      Kudos
