People all talk to their pets dogs cats horses birds etc and the animals all learn many of the words you say in whatever language you speak. Unfortunately they can't talk back. Animal people are often good at reading the animals body language so we can sort of converse.

Cats aren't truly untrainable but you MUST use food rewards as that's all they want. I do this, I get food. Not "I said food so she'll give me food" - ABSURD.

Billi has actually progressed to word combinations for much more abstract concepts, now. She has named her hu-mom's coffee 'Mom catnip water'...which isn't that inaccurate when you think about it! 🤣🤣🤣☕🌿
when she wanted to play with fantoy, Kendra said "mom ouch. Fantoy later", and Billi pressed "Catnip"... and later "Then"... "Fantoy". I think it means "take medecins, mom and come to play". Catnip make cats feel better (I asume).
@@mairios521 It does; it doesn't just get them high, it's good for stomach upsets (reducing pain and bloating), and a little buzz from it can help medicate their anxiety and depression.

@@dragonrage500 They are indeed three separate buttons. The cat came up with the idea of calling coffee "catnip water" by herself!
Go watch her more recent videos. Billi has improved massively and is having actual conversations (at least the best she can with her limited word options). It’s more than just her asking for food or pets or outside. In one video she was playing a little rough and accidentally bit mom. Mom told Billi she bit, and immediately Billi went over to the buttons and pushed “ouch where” and looked up at Mom questioningly
Yeah, some of her conversations blow my mind!
She also asks for specific people and it’s so interesting knowing she misses them when they’re not around.
Or when billy wanted to see her human dad (he was in ghana for the week), her mom said "Dad in ghana" and she answered "what". There are ao many moments that are so mind blowing.
My recent favorite is when she got worked up about something and Billi just walked over, pressed settle, and swaggered away. Had me rolling!

Or maybe the cat loves the sound of her laughter, thats why she keep pressing the MAD button.
My exact thought!
Holy s---- you just read my mind.
Ive seen a lot of the videos. She uses it to show when she doesnt like something.
Yeah I've seen more videos - she always seems to use the mad button after something that would definitely make a cat mad, like denying food or being picked up and taken off something or taking something off her 😂
Except the owner doesn't laugh every time. I think she associates it with generally wanting something or not being pleased. She knows it gets her attention easiest, so in that sense it's expression in its purest form - she's feeling some kind of way and wants that to be known. But she doesn't press it if she's happy or she wants something specific. She might say "mad" and then immediately after "food" which seems to be her way of conveying that not only would she like some food but she is not content without it. She definitely doesn't see the word "mad" as strong of an emotion that we would - to her, it kinda encapsulates every moment where she isn't getting everything she wants. In fact, I think sometimes she doesn't even know WHY she's mad, she's just being moody.
It must sometimes be infuriating to the owner to hear "mad, mad, mad", but I think it helps the cat, because usually cats don't have a clear, direct way of showing displeasure - they can spend a lot of time just being dicks and trying to get attention, and their emotions and needs can still easily be missed or misunderstood. Billi just has to press one button, so even if she doesn't get what she wants, she probably feels like she has been heard and seen.
Billie has a HUGE vocabulary of words she uses in a timely manner. She will hit a button multiple times for emphasis, and she has been learning more and more words. Billie is a genius among cats, but I think most cats could learn to use some buttons, if not as many as Billie.
I reckon pretty much all cats are capable, but whether they can be bothered to learn them is another matter entirely! I can't imagine the (honestly very smart) cat we had when I was growing up using something like that. He was _far_ too independent and stubborn! He definitely had the intelligence to do it, of that I'm sure!
I love that when she’s noisy doing dishes in the kitchen, Billie will incessantly press the “mad” button until she stops.
Or the "noise" buttons... maybe followed by an "All Done".
Omg, it's BilliSpeaks! So happy to see them getting covered by the Dodo!
Haha yep

I also thought that! :D
I was screaming when I saw the thumbnail, finally BilliSpeaks!!!!!!!
Does billispeaks have her own youtube channel? Cuz I wanna see more of this extraordinary cat.
Something I find interesting:
Billi rarely ever meows.
Cats meow when they're trying to communicate with humans.
Given another, more effective and direct method of communication, the cat has no reason to.
This is what i find interesting too and would like to try. My kitten barely meowed at all when I got her, and I rescued her from the street where she had little to no interactions with humans. After about 2-3 months she got fairly talkative and uses different meows and reactions to try and ''tell me'' what she wants.
I want to try doing the buttons to see if her behavior would change again and how she would use it, especially since she seems really set on trying to communicate with me.
I think Billi's owner mentioned in a instagram comment that Billi still meows, but far less frequently than she used to
I watched this video on cat communication which stated cats don't meow to each other, except when they are kittens. Adult cats meow only to humans. Yes, so this woman really has come up with something.
Hmm I love the sound of a meow so as a selfish human I don't think I would want buttons.
My cat is like this at the opposite end. He barely mews when he's with me because i find his body language pretty clear (like he would start running randomly because he wants you to follow him to open a door) He only mews at people that don't pay enough attention to him to get what he wants
Kendra, you’ve done amazing work with Billi.
Billi definitely knows what she's saying. She's even started using her buttons to form combos to refer to things outside of her limited vocabulary. My favorite is coffee. Coffee is mom catnip water and I think that's just perfectly hilarious.
"Mad" is food in Danish, so she is obviously bilingual... and trying to teach her slaves as much ;)

Billi definitely understands, at least somewhat. The way she looks up at her mom when pressing the buttons is the same way my cat looks up at me when he's trying to tell me something in cat.
Its been shown that smarter mammals such as dogs can understand very rudimentary language. I dont know if this experiment has been done with cats before, but cats are pretty smart as well, and I wouldnt be surprised at all if they could understand basic words and concepts as well.
At the very least, they can understand a correlation between pushing a specific button and certain actions, which is close enough to language as its still a communication of ideas with intent.
@@eragon78 Precisely. Cats are more than smart enough to make the connection between sets of sounds or certain buttons and a desired result.

@Raed 928 lol dude it's great to be skeptical but it is a cognitive bias as any other the cat seems to press it when it can't figured out what else to press in my experience cats do get frustrated they have emotions not as complex but sure but its simple the cat connects the button with the feeling of frustration or displeasure maybe even pain itself if it's not just using ouch as mad 2.0 and it hits the button because it was trained to when it feels the displeasure it hits food if its hungry and play is it feels like playing
@Raed 928 in the video, it's pretty much proven that the cat made a connection between the music and the "noise" button. Sure, pressing mad over and over would've just been the cat pressing her favorite button, but when asked why she was mad, the Billi specifically pressed the "noise", "ouch", and "mad" buttons. "Learning language" is probably a bit of a stretch, but she certainly understands that when humans hear specific noises, they behave in certain ways. The cat didn't like the music so she pressed the buttons most likely to have her turn it off.
It's so obvious when she presses mad her tail is swishing
If you go to her channel and watch a couple of videos you'll see that billie's tail swishes when she's thinking. It's a pattern a lot of us noticed lol.
THAT IS SO CUTE, and I believe it, I've seen a dog do that before and cat are sieneiificlly proven to be smarter!
More people needs this with their pets. Pets DO have voices and opinions, if we would understand them, of course they'd like us more.
My cat's favorite words are probably
Take me out
Don't take me in
My cat's favorite word's would be laser pointer lol.
Please see my RUclips🦆
my cat would also say the same but in reverse =))

I feel it's less that she's mad, and more like she's trying to figure out what the button does, since you don't have a direct reaction to it when she presses it. Food gives food. Pets gives pets... mad gives.... mad gives.... Mama? What does mad do?
At first maybe. But now, if you check out their channel, she uses it intentionally. She even has a button for happy and uses it intentionally in correct contexts (and don't get me started on how she's now communicating times of day)
She explained that the way she taught mad was by pressing it for her when the context was right. Like if she got up and had to move Billi off her lap, and she was giving the annoyed tail swishes, she'd press the button. She did the same to show her what ouch means, but mostly used it showing that she had hurt herself since she didn't want to hurt her cat. The one time she used it for her was when she accidentally stepped on her tail and took the sad opportunity of having hurt her cat to press the button to add to what it meant. And now she uses it usually to say a noise is hurting her ears or presses it when she notices her owner hurt themselves. It's pretty cool
I had a cat years ago who learned to say, Mama, Yes, and Hungry. She could pronounce those words very well. Hungry came out more as 'Ongrey'

I love the attentiveness in Billi’s eyes! 😻 She’s clearly communicating in an advanced way with the buttons! I’d like to know how she started associations with emotion though. “Food” and “pets” and “outside” could be easy learned connections, but “mad” is quite fascinating.
I think mad is actually understandable. You would just have to press it when something undesirable happens and eventually she'll make the connection i.e. when 'bad' happens, she gets 'mad'. I'm more interested in how she differentiates 'love you' from 'pets'...
@@aliciablack1254 Maybe it was when she initiated the affection herself?
all of these buttons result in one thing, your attention. Pets, food, laughter, love, snuggles, catnip, walks, outside...whatever it is its you showing attention. The cat doesn't touch the buttons when you are not home because cats aren't dumb. Fact is if you want food and you get pet meh I'll take it. The reality is Billie gets fed and pet and gets to go outside regardless of touching the button so it may be positive reinforcement but the cat is still going to get everything it wants regardless of touching the "correct" button. Sometimes my cat wants to snuggle but if I give her a bag of catnip or a saucer of milk she's cool which makes the reward to cats mostly interchangeable and solely about being bored and wanting attention in whatever form. Chances are you shower even more love and attention and treats when the cat presses "mad" because it amuses you which marks that button as the highest payout so it gets pressed more often.
@@jessicachernak8699 I mean, even assuming all that, answering questions in the correct context on accident can only happen so much.
We're talking 20 buttons with each having very different results. You can only go so far and call it lucky coincidence.
I'm not saying that Billi understands things the same way humans do, but assuming that its just positive reinforcements is easily disproven.
As for the mad button, it's a button that comes with displeasement or frustration.
@@Predated2 Well it only has to happen so much on the edited video. So who really knows how many times she presses the "wrong button" you only see the video clips she wants you to see. She isn't going to show the times Billie got it wrong :p. Also the food button is the one right next to the food so that one is easy. Also the one for outside is by the door.
For those who do not think they understand, a dog with a button set where planes fly over often invented a name for them "Big upstairs bird" another of hers is "Dad upstairs poop".
Is that Bunny? That sounds exactly what Bunny would say.
Billi has learned so much more
An update would be great
Her looks is always stuck in this innocent way that makes it like she oblivious to what’s happening and it’s so cute.
My husband uses these same buttons to communicate when I won't talk to him.
Do you just push the mad and outside buttons? Lol jk i would tho
@@comingsn2519 Lol, I will get my own buttons that say, " Mad, don't talk to me!
Its billie, i love this cat, she can speak a whole sentence now, she is so smart
Our tabby doesn’t need a button for that. Her glare says it all.
