    their conversation about religion in the beginning was really interesting, specifically because it seems like each of them have chosen a very self serving reason for what they believe. the arguments they make aren't meant to convince anyone but themselves... they don't extend any farther than that. Thorkell is convinced to follow whatever ideology flatters his concept of personal glory. he's like 7 feet tall, and built like a tank... fighting is his specialty, so of course he'd go for a system that values what he's best at. the other soldiers are basing their opinions on how cool or admirable they find each deity, with some of them mocking Jesus for seeming weak, and admiring the Norse gods for having observable attributes of power. Ragnar and Canute seem to value authority and a chain of command... their religion places god as the highest power in the universe, and all else is subservient to him. but they also benefit from maintaining a hierarchical order where the royal family is at the top, and the rest of society falls in line and knows to give them deference like it's common sense. and of course, the priest is an alcoholic, so of course he's just in it for whoever made booze. a god for all of humanity would have to enmesh all of these perspectives somehow... if each of their perspectives is so heavily informed by their biases, how are any of them supposed to really believe in anything?
    and sure enough, Thorkell's gamble pays dividends here. he bets on the idea that anger is the path of least resistance, and is easily able to bait the anger of Ragnar's men, because the shame of cowardice is such a potent emotion. the frustration of being taunted is too hard to ignore... especially because they reported greater numbers than they had, which lends the taunts a grain of truth. there's something here that neither religion is quite addressing. the idea of fighting to enter Valhalla is just an appealing way to frame the act of easily giving in to violent urges because it flatters one's sense of pride... choosing violence eliminates any hope of reconciliation. but the christian standard of moral purity is also frustrating to maintain because it denies this emotion outright. and if you just leave people to simmer in that feeling without addressing the frustration, they will boil over eventually.

    Canute is historically described as a beautiful man

      @Bayard1503 Год назад +1

      Not really, more like handsome, there's a difference... he was seen like a perfect man. Tall, strong, these alone would qualify him from being seen as handsome. Anyway, it's a manga, they wanted to make him: pretty as a girl. Whatever.

    Thorkell is a horrible person, and the total antithesis to Vinland Saga's message, but ho-ly-shit he is so charming and charismatic it's nearly impossible to hate him.
    He is a murder addicted giant with the mind of a child, and the charm of one.

    • @Bayard1503

      Is he?? We only see him fighting other warriors... he doesn't go assassinating people or murdering entire villages full of non-combatants like Askeladd does.

      Askeladd is more horrible than Thorkell, if you check it closely.

      @@Bayard1503yes, he is. He creates war just for fun. The war could be over already but he decided he want to fight so let's continue the war. And what happens in wars? Innocent people are suffering and dying.

      @@rakhatthenut3815 The thing with conquerors like Sweyn is that they never stop, the war would just move on, to Wales, Ireland, France. Not to mention that the Saxons would most likely start insurrections which as we know usually lead to even more deaths than wars...

    I'm very late, but you might interested to know that according to historical records on the Jomsvikings, Canute actually may well be Thorfinn's cousin. This is murky because a lot of records about the Jomsvikings stray more into myth-like stories, but Sigvaldi, the leader of the Jomsvikings, was said to have married Astrid, the daughter of the king of Wendland. Sweyn Forkbeard's wife(there are two conflicting records but it could be a two wives situation) was Gunhild, also a daughter of the King of Wendland at the time(Poland). So Canute would be first cousins with Helga, which does seem believable given their appearance.

    It's a pet peeve of mine, but I'm always annoyed Asgård is written Asgard in English, when Asgord would be closer to the original pronounciation.

      @Celeborn93 Год назад +2

      Indeed a pet peeve.
      You don't hear them do proper pronunciations for characters' names, either, even though we have a rough estimate of how they'd sound in reality.
      Besides, every culture has unique pronunciations in English, that's just the nature of translation.
      Asgard sounds cooler anyway, imo.

      Why would it annoy you? English is not a phonetic language to begin with. What's written is not indicative of the pronunciation at all. This is especially true for vowels.
