What Rich American Men Did For Fun In The Early 1900s

- Rocker Pop Star Thomas Dolby is a friend of mine. He is one of the most creative guys I have ever known. He certainly didn't need to be a novelist but he got bugged by this story and thought he would take a crack at writing a novel. He has done a great job.
His debut novel--a historical thriller called ‘Prevailing Wind.’ is set in 1913, and it is the story of two penniless Maine lobstermen who try out to become members of the crew of an America’s Cup racing yacht owned by millionaires - the richest American men - at the wealthy New York Yacht Club.
Thomas was fascinated by the historical background of that pre-WW1 era, and he explains in this interview with me, why he chose it for his new book. You can order it from Amazon. “Prevailing Wind”
Thank you Thomas.

Now
In the eightes he blinded me with science. Now, Dolby blinds me with guilded age history.
He did a lot of the first cell phone ringtones too. He brilliantly reinvents himself.
My mom's uncle left home at age twenty and went to New York seeking a job. He found one with Standard Oil and worked his way up to a vice president. Now it makes sense to see my teenage mom ( my not yet mother ) on her uncle's yacht! I have that photo of her.
It was illegal to charge income tax prior to 1913 except for times of declared war.
Always remember that.
Then the government could charge up to 90% income tax. Smh.
*Don't worry, its only for 2 weeks...*
The UK government brought in the income tax "as a temporary measure in order to defeat Napoleon". He remains undefeated.
To answer the question seriously though: Drinking, sex, work and drinking while having sex at work. It's no wonder grandfathers loved going to work while their grandchildren do not.
Having sex in the coals mines? Hauling lobster pots? WTF are you talking about?
@@frequentlycynical642 So your mind is particularly interested in the jobs where it is extremely difficult for the wife or fiancee to show up and "discuss urgent family matters in private" aye? The exception proves the rule, there must be a place for your kind to thrive. What your kind is I do not know, but you are covered as the fisherman who hates seeing his old hag or people in general, and you are covered in the mines where you are less "pick-y" who you spend time with alone in the closet. You know, where you don't work in the coal mines, the coal mines work you? Uhn tiss uhn tiss uhn tiss baby! 🏳🌈
Hehehe..😊
It's important to remember that, while it's probably impossible to be a billionaire and not be a complete piece of crap, plenty of regular people with no money do just fine at being equally awful. 😅
I'll take "Murder Young Orphan Boys" for a thousand, Alex.
LOL. Beat me to it. 😂
Perhaps the original meaning of MYOB? 🤔
This did used to actually happen. My great grandfather used to go what he called “negro hunting” they would target the younger colored kids.
Imagine if this was done on SNL. HAHAHAHA. Alex (Will Farrell) hosts a special episode with 1900's Billionaires.
An orphan is trotted out onstage, and Cornelius says, "What is..." and then shoots the kid. 😆
@AkumaAPN Bill Hader could reprise "I Drink Your Milkshake".
This looks just fascinating. Thank you for the wonderful historical content!
I just pre-ordered his book. He has a knack for story-telling. I look forward to reading it.
One of the more interesting commercials I've ever been dragged through.
Thomas Dolby is a fascinating gentleman who has inspired me to live in the moment, to be present...everyday!
Also, be your truest, best self...and especiallt....embrace your own curiosity and quirks!
I am a fan and admirer since 1981!
Thank you Mr. Dolby.
Thomas Dolby for reals!
What a profound influence on developments artistically, mentally, emotionally, psychologically and gosh knows what else as a 1-year old to present!
Thanks for posting, as well as all your other postings, sincerely what a treat, no foolin'!
As someone with roots in Atlantic Canada, the tales of the fishermen and their communities are very close to my heart. It is your book to write, but PLEASE come true on your promise to show the lives of these people with truthfulness and dignity. They were the salt of the earth and you should do them right.
Thanks to all for giving a like if you care about the working class.
"She blinded me with science" is an '80's classic. I had no idea who I was listening to until the end of the video.
imo life as a rich man now is much better than during those years
great video and great story, wow those sail boats are beautiful!
This interview is most fascinating I know very little about Thomas Dolby other then he is a musician friend of yours. 😊✌💛
Today I learned that Snoke was David Rockefeller.
That's both fascinating and sickening, but that's what the idle rich men were like. It's cool that Thomas has ventured into writing, and brought these kinds of tales to life. Thanks, David. ❤️
"Were"?
@@johnmusser8925 Correction: were/are ✌️
Interesting history Thank you David ❤️
Great story! I especially love learning about this particular timeframe in the US. And I'm certainly looking foward to seeing more from Thomas! (Also I recognized that brutal but common horse in the street photo from one of your past community post) TYVM David!✌
The very thought chills me too the bone.
I think I'll be buying this. I'm a huge history nerd and my favorite periods of time are just before the turn of the century and the very beginning of the 1900's. So I'm excited to see how well written and engaging this novel is!
I find it amusing that it's only the looks of the world that truly change, not the people. We just put on different skins, but we remain who we are at the core. This video documentary is the proof of that. Nothing much has change between super rich and super poor. It's just perceived differently, same problems in the world, just done in a different way.
Thank you for posting this video!
Agreed

Have you read Gerry Docherty 's Hidden History ? (Round Table group etc)
Love this video David! I can't tell you how bad I wanted the title of Thomas' book to be "She blinded me with a prevailing wind!" 🤣
His enthusiasm for the topic is infectious, thanks for uploading David.
She blinded me with Lobsters!! Cool subject. Interesting, the legacy of our Robber Barrons. Love us some TD!!
Fantastic, I love history! And Thomas Dolby’s music, count me in to read his book!
Thank you for this story, David. His book sounds very interesting.
Saw Thomas Live at the QMU at Glasgow University in early 80’s. One of my favorite songs of his was “One of our Submarines”. Better times.
Wow your channel has really exploded since I last saw the subscriber count. Usually I see your interesting community posts every now and then, first time I've seen a video that I can recall on the channel.
Congrats on the growth and best of luck with what you put out and share with us all next, David! :D
Thank you. Actually, my videos are much more popular than anything that I post on the community post.

Look into what the Vanderbilt's did in Newport after late nights at their Reading Room Club. Like riding naked down Belleview Ave on horseback..
I remember his song from the early '80s . It was something about " Science " . Good song !
I'm going to get that book. Fantastic idea and thanks!
You always have top quality content , thank you !
Why have I not found your content earlier than this? Fantastic stuff! Jarring shift from "She Blinded Me With Science!"
You've blinded me with science well done!
Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Carnegie, Astor, Ford and Morgan. The start of American history real interesting. had to do with banking, railroad, oil, steel, and automobiles. Thanks for sharing this video David. Much appreciated my friend. Do you have a wonderful day? And once again, like I said before, thank you for the phenomenal videos you show us.
Sounds like a good novel to read. As always, thank you David!
I had no idea about these yachts. What happened to the yachts? Those yachts were ginormous.
For some reason "One of Our Submarines" is playing in my head right now
Thank you.
Thank you for this history.
This is just my opinion I think this behavior continues but manifests in a different way
The Volvo Ocean Race still exists.
So Good to See You! Your music got me thru an interesting period of my life for sure.
Beautiful ships. I was thinking of this recent competition to have the biggest rocket and the biggest yacht. "She Blinded you with Science"? Maybe She has some ideas?
this was great. i am at the sparks Nevada library.. i am going to the reference desk now to see if they have the book. if not i will ask them to order it... THANK YOU !!!...rockettebob in reno
Sounds fascinating, the class divide is/was staggering. Look forward to reading it.
All the best 👍
I’m def getting this book thank YOU!!!! 🙏
Hello Thomas, great video! As a sailer and a (temporary) inhabitant of Newport, I found this video really interesting
I love history , this was a really good video
Great video, good on. ya, ill look for the book
He blinded me…with HISTORY!!!
Bravo Thomas san ! Arigato from Japan
I also remember reading about barons in their old age, such as John Jacob Astor and John D. Rockefeller, employed wet nurses for health reasons which wouldn’t go over very well in our time.
Will it be on audible?
I'm hoping to make a fully dramatized audiobook. Here's me reading an audio excerpt: ruclips.net/video/MIpbdA_sO0Y/видео.html
Thomas Dolby also aged well.
This video really peaked my interest
"I do not have yach its or polop ponies"
"Hey! Thats yachts and polo ponies!"
" Oh. Whaddaya want from me?"
I find this video to be interesting 👍
Not available on Audible. How can that be?
Way to make Father's Day shopping easier! :)
Good heavens, Miss Yakamoto, you're BEAUTIFUL! Great lecture, Prof Dolby!
I love Thomas Dolby, but I had no idea he was such a polymath and such a storyteller! He fits right in to that Stephen Fry/Emma Thompson crowd!
thanks!!
When will the hardcover version be available
Read "reminiscences of a stock operator". It was written under a pseudonym by Jesse Livermore, of of the best traders who ever lived, who was a member of the NY Yacht club, and had several large yachts, which he used to go fishing on with friends for huge swordfish.
Very cool!
Wow, hearing some familiar sounds. From *Gothic* (1986). Then realize it's the composer of that wonderful soundtrack!
Love Thomas Dolby!
It's funny to me that people complain about wealth inequality these days by presenting it as some sort of new concept. Great video.
stunning old photos, the idea of lobstermen/fishermen sailing in NY.... Hey, where are the ultra rich playing now?
Well that was very very interesting and I'm in.
good video. I hadn't thought about who the crew were....interesting that it was fishermen.
Larry Ellison is still spending billions on yacht racing
Thomas Dolby I never knew he was on here. I actually wouldn’t have recognized him.
How little it has changed.
Did sailing yachts get any bigger than they were back then? Do any of those boats still sail today?
Por dios I had no idea of this side of Thomas Dolby/Robertson. Those rich-people pastimes, like yachting, horse racing, all that kind of thing, is another universe to me. No idea what it consists of, nor why anyone would want to do it. Maybe that novel would provide some insight.
Watch old movies. B&W. It's all there.
@@kathleenferguson3296 I'm sure I have seen some, at some time or other. I don't know if they really convey the feeling of the experience. So far I just don't see the attraction.
Its just the rich mana version of a horse race, like western type shiz, just a little more regal. Boating on a scale worthy of putting a model of yours in a bottle. Trinkety and novel amusement with the money to do it on a grand scale
wow... looks interesting....
Classic Brit to say the US wasn’t the foremost country at the turn of the century. It had already surpassed the British Empire in GDP a decade earlier. To be fair, I suppose not everyone had caught on to that yet.
What’s the song 1:24

Pretty sure they would bet each other a dollar to see if they can take a thief/beggar/conman and make him a stock trader.

Taxes, come on everybody knows taxes are for the peasants. Duh!
Your a novelist or not David 😅 go for it
Life on Earth is so so short. Eternity is forever... It's like the vastness of the Universe... It's not that difficult to imagine... I wouldn't trade the wealth of the world for an eternity in Hell. Redemption isn't for the arrogant... It's for the innocent.
Those individuals are still running the country, and powerful government officials
Rhode Island was not the last state without an income tax. There are still some free states that have never taxed income.

During this era the average person gained more wealth than any other time. The reason people came to America was to work. No jobs in Europe.
No state tax.... WOW lol
actually there was not even any Federal income tax until 1913. Rhode Island was the last state to implement it because the power of its wealthy residents!
@@thomasdolbyya the way he described it is confusing. There are still a few states without a state income tax. He meant to say federal income tax.
